Light industry experts have calculated that the average “life” of a coat is about 5 years. Throughout this time, clothes need care. Many people believe: " No problem. Let's wash" But the same experts claim that each wash shortens the service life of a coat by 1 year. Therefore, it is important to imagine how to clean a coat at home.

Sometimes it is enough to remove individual stains to return it to its original appearance. Particular attention should be paid to quickly contaminated areas: collar, sleeves, pockets.

Modern coats are varied in style, color, and most importantly, in the material from which they are made.

Despite this, there are general instructions for care, cleaning and washing:

  • Items require daily care. A regular clothes brush will help remove dust and dirt before it becomes a problem;
  • You can wash a coat if its fabric is less than 70% wool. Hand or machine washable on delicate cycle;
  • Decorative fur elements will not be damaged when washed, but they must dry on their own. Direct sunlight and heating devices are contraindicated;
  • Any new cleaning product should be tested on a small area of clothing. At the same time, the fabric should not lose its color and texture;
  • Stains should be removed to the middle from the edges so that the dirt does not spread further;
  • Before cleaning, place a cloth that absorbs moisture under the contaminated area;
  • Iron the product through gauze or a thin rag, starting from the sleeves. Then the hangers, the back, the front; collar and lapels are at the end.

A special pad will help smooth your shoulders. Fleecy fabric is ironed in the direction of the pile.

Removing stains

There are numerous recipes for removing stains of various origins.

For example, the following remedies will help remove fat:

  • Talc. Apply baby powder or talcum powder to the stain. The fat is allowed to absorb and brushed off after 11-12 hours;
  • Petrol. But not a car one - it can leave stains, but an aviation one or a cleaned one, the so-called “Galosh”. Cover the stain with a cotton cloth and wipe in a circle with a swab soaked in gasoline;
  • Iron. A fresh stain is ironed through paper napkins, which are changed as they become dirty.

You can fight coffee and tea stains with the following mixtures:

  • a combination of ammonia and glycerin. 1 spoon of alcohol per 2 spoons of glycerin;
  • a mixture of vinegar and alcohol in equal parts.

Wine stains don't like salt. Sprinkle the contaminated area with plenty of salt and wash off with cold water. This recipe is not suitable for bright or woolen fabrics.

You can get rid of beer stains by mixing alcohol and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio.

Cleaning the collar

How to clean a coat collar at home?

One of the most frequently contaminated areas of a coat is the collar. It will help to eliminate greasy places:

  • A solution of salt and ammonia (1:4). Use a cotton swab dipped in it to wipe the stains;

  • Iron. Place a cotton cloth soaked in a soap solution on the dirty collar and iron it. Dirt sticks to the fabric;

The fur collar can be cleaned with an adsorbent, which you can probably find in the kitchen. These are potato starch, talc, semolina - substances that have a porous structure. They effectively remove dirt and dust. The product must be spread out and sprinkled with adsorbent. Then gently rub with your hands and brush off with a clothes brush or vacuum.

Product made from natural fabric

How to clean a wool coat?

The value of wool products is their naturalness. A feature that influences the choice of cleaning method is the possible loss of color. It is necessary to test the cleaning agent in an inconspicuous place, preferably from the inside out.

  • To remove stuck lint, hairs, and hairs, it is advisable to use a roller equipped with adhesive tape;
  • For cleaning, a wool detergent mixed with 2 teaspoons of ammonia and a small amount of water is suitable;
  • The solution is applied to the stains with a cotton swab, then the residue is removed with a clean damp cloth. A swab dipped in tea leaves will help to refresh a dark-colored product;
  • Dry the coat by hanging it on hangers and wrapping it in cotton cloth.

Drape care

How to clean a drape coat?

Drape is a dense woolen fabric consisting of 2 layers. Clothing made from this material is steadily popular among buyers because it is warm:

Before cleaning a drape coat, you should carefully study the manufacturer's recommendations on the product label.

It says:

  • Is it washable?
  • method and temperature;
  • is chemical cleaning acceptable?
  • Ironing is possible or not.

If there are no special restrictions, you should use standard tips on how to clean a coat:

  • Cleaning is carried out 2 times a year - at the end of the season and before it. If possible, you should do without washing. If there are no stains, just hang the product on a hanger and brush it with a dry brush in the direction of the fibers. Then repeat this procedure with a damp brush. The cleaned coat is ventilated and dried;
  • Dust can be removed with black bread. Lay the item on the floor and crumble the bread crumb. Then roll the crumbs over the surface until bread balls appear. The latter are removed with a brush. The dust was gone;
  • Any stains that appear on the surface are washed with soapy water, using liquid detergents recommended for woolen fabrics. Moisten contaminated areas with this liquid, leave for a while, then wipe with a damp cloth and allow to dry;
  • Washing is permissible by hand or delicate machine in warm water - not exceeding 35-40 degrees - so that the product does not shrink;
  • Dry vertically on hangers with good air circulation.

It is possible to use an iron heated to no higher than 200 degrees with a steamer.

Dear cashmere

How to clean and wash a cashmere coat at home

Cashmere is a warm and pleasant to the touch material, originally made from the down of mountain goats. Today this is the name given to thin and soft woolen fabrics of special weave.

Start by inspecting the product. Determine the scope of work: you just need to brush off the dust and lint, or there is a big wash ahead. Study, find out what material the coat is made of. If the composition is mixed, rely on the presence of natural fibers. Synthetic additives improve the fabric and make it easier to care for, while materials of plant and animal origin are more demanding to clean.

Pay attention to the manufacturer's advice: what temperature should the water be, is it possible to use a washing machine, how to iron and dry the product. Don't neglect this information. Proper care will extend the life of your coat and maintain its original appearance.

When is the best time to go to the dry cleaner?

  • When the label directly states such a need.
  • If you are the happy owner of a snow-white coat: any manipulations can only stain the product or make the color dull.
  • If there are machine oil or fuel oil stains on your coat, they are difficult to remove and there is a high risk of ruining your clothes.
  • If there are greasy stains on a leather coat: solvents will damage the integrity and color of the leather, and degreasers will damage its protective film.
  • If the stains cannot be removed on your own.
  • If you are not confident in your abilities or it is very expensive for you.

How to clean a coat made from natural fabric

Drape coat

vidy-tkanej.ru

Drape is a heavy, dense woolen fabric that does not fade, wrinkle, or fade. Since products made from natural wool are sensitive to hot water (they may shrink in size), we will clean the drape coat using the dryest methods possible.

  • To remove dust, use a coarse brush in the direction of the pile.
  • Rye bread will also help cope with dust: spread your coat on the floor and crumble the crumb on top. Then roll the crumbs over the surface of the fabric until balls form. Brush off any remaining crumbs (don't brush them off if you want to become a favorite of the local pigeons).
  • Try to remove stains on your outerwear without washing. Dissolve a little mild detergent in water and dampen the stains on the drape with this liquid. Wait 5-10 minutes and wipe the coat with a damp sponge to remove soap particles.
  • As a last resort, you can try washing the coat, but preferably by hand and in lukewarm water (no more than 30 °C).
  • After all bath procedures, be sure to dry the drape properly. Hang it on a hanger in a well-ventilated area. Give the coat time to dry completely so that it does not lose its shape.

Tweed coat

vidy-tkanej.ru

Tweed is an elastic wool fabric with a small pile. It gets dirty a little, practically does not wrinkle and lasts a long time.

  • To remove dust, vacuum the coat.
  • If the tweed is stained, dry the stain and then brush off the dirt. This may be enough.
  • If dirt has become embedded in the fabric, do the same as with a drape: moisten the dirt with soapy water, and then comb it with a damp brush.
  • It is highly undesirable to wash a tweed coat. If this is necessary, do not use a washing machine and do not leave the fabric in water for a long time. Wash and rinse tweed by hand in warm (no more than 30 °C) water.
  • Dry your coat properly: on a horizontal surface between two towels to avoid deformation.
  • You need to iron tweed from the wrong side, placing a damp cloth between the fabric and the iron.

Cashmere coat

vidy-tkanej.ru

Cashmere is an airy undercoat combed from the barrels of fluffy mountain goats. This is a very soft and delicate material, sensitive to external influences. Therefore, we will treat him extremely courteously.

  • To remove dust from your coat, wipe it with a damp cloth.
  • Soak greasy stains with a small amount of purified gasoline, and sprinkle talcum powder on top. Once dry, brush off any remaining residue. If necessary, repeat the procedure again.
  • To remove sweat stains, prepare cotton wool, soap and ammonia. First, wipe the stain with a swab soaked in soapy water, then with ammonia, and then with a damp cloth.
  • To remove a stain whose origin you cannot identify, mix glycerin and ammonia in equal proportions and rub the stained area with the mixture several times. Then remove any remaining liquid with a damp cloth.
  • Read the label carefully: some types of cashmere cannot be machine washed.
  • If your coat can be washed (when it is really necessary), choose a delicate cycle without spinning, a water temperature no higher than 30 ° C and liquid detergents. Remember: cashmere should not be rubbed or twisted, otherwise it will lose its shape.
  • To properly dry cashmere, lightly wring it out with your hands after washing and place it on a towel spread on a horizontal surface away from heaters and direct sunlight. Do not dry your coat on hangers to prevent it from stretching.
  • If you want to iron cashmere, do it only with steam, without touching the surface of the fabric.

Coats made from other types of wool

If you understand that your coat is made from the down of some animals, but do not understand which ones, follow the general recommendations for caring for woolen products. Before using any cleaning method, test it on a small, inconspicuous area of clothing.

  • Remove dust and small lint with a soft, dry brush or roller with adhesive tape.
  • To add shine to a dark-colored item, wipe it with a cotton swab dipped in strong black tea.
  • Worn areas on the collar or sleeves can be treated with a mixture of ammonia and salt in a ratio of 1:4. Problem areas are rubbed with it, and the remains are cleaned with a brush.
  • Clean any stains from the edges to the center: this will prevent streaks from appearing on the fur.
  • Remove greasy stains from the inside of the product using a cotton swab moistened with purified gasoline. Place a piece of clean cloth on the outside of the stain. When the dirt disappears, wipe everything with a damp cloth.
  • Alcohol stains can be removed with vinegar and alcohol. Mix the liquids in equal proportions, moisten a cotton swab with the solution and wipe the stain.
  • Other stains can be removed using a soapy solution with ammonia. To 100 ml of warm water, add a tablespoon of liquid soap and ammonia. Soak a cotton swab in the solution and treat the stains with it. Then remove any remaining soap with a damp cloth. For prevention, carry out this procedure regularly.
  • If the coat can be washed (there is an inscription about this on the label), do it by hand in water not hotter than 30 ° C so that the product does not shrink. Preferably with a special detergent for wool. Do not twist or rub the coat to avoid creases.
  • Dry all items horizontally, lined with towels to absorb moisture. If you hang a natural coat on hangers, it can stretch out due to its own weight, so it’s better not to take risks.

A coat made from real wool is a stylish and warm wardrobe item that will never go out of style. And in order for such clothes to serve you as long as possible and not lose their visual appeal, it is important to properly care for them. Of course, the easiest way is to take a woolen product to the dry cleaner, because professionals know exactly how to handle it. But you can also tidy up your coat at home. Next we will tell you in detail how to do this.

Preparation

Of course, before you start cleaning a wool or wool blend coat, you should carefully study the information on the product label. There are clearly stated recommendations for caring for these particular clothes. For example, can the material be washed or dried? Some types of wool can only be dry cleaned to remove dirt and Under no circumstances should it be wet. Other models can be washed or wet processed without consequences. One way or another, it all depends on the specific coat.

Now let's take a closer look at the stages of cleaning a woolen product.

Thorough inspection of the product

After you have studied the information on the coat label, you should carefully examine the entire length of the product. Look not only at the outside, but also at the lining. Also special attention should be paid the space under the collar, near the pockets, and also on the cuffs. After all, it is in these areas that the most pollution occurs. Once you find the most problematic areas and spots, you will know exactly what to focus on first.

Removing surface contaminants

Before you begin cleaning and removing stains, you need to clean the wool product from pellets, excess lint, dust and threads. This is very easy to do at home using a special sticky roller. It is sold at any hardware store and is inexpensive. In this case, such a device significantly improves the appearance of the coat without washing. By regularly processing the fabric in this way, you will be able to keep your clothes in excellent condition for as long as possible.

Be sure to take note of this simple and effective method. Small stains that cannot be removed with a roller can be removed using a dry or slightly damp brush with soft bristles.

The main thing is not to use aggressive detergents or large amounts of water.

Removing difficult stains

Difficult stains are those that could not be removed with a brush, cloth or soap solution. You can try applying a small amount of solution to the problem area, wait ten or fifteen minutes, and then work with a clean, soft brush. Just be careful not to press too hard on the material to avoid damaging it.

For more serious contamination, other methods are required. So, if there is a greasy stain on your coat, you can remove it using a small amount of starch or regular talcum powder. Pour the powder onto the stain, cover with a paper towel or thin cloth and wait several hours (about six or even ten). After this time, simply remove the remaining powder with a brush.

Greasy areas on a wool coat, such as sleeve cuffs and pocket areas, can be easily cleaned with vinegar and rubbing alcohol. To do this, you need to mix these two components in equal parts and apply the resulting solution to the problem area using cotton wool. Leave for fifteen minutes and then treat the area with a soft, clean cloth or brush. In the same way, you can quickly remove contaminants from food or drinks.

Contamination from machine oil is usually eliminated using conventional gasoline. You just need to soak a cotton pad in fuel and treat the woolen product from the inside. And traces of tea or coffee drinks can be easily removed by applying glycerin to the solution.

When you need to refresh and remove dirt from a white or light-colored product, it is best to use a solution based on ammonia and table salt. It is better to treat dark-colored clothes with warm black tea. Also a very effective tool in the fight for the purity and freshness of products made from natural wool is the well-known powder Vanish. Use it according to the instructions and you will get excellent results in a fairly short time and without effort.

In addition, on the shelves of modern stores it is easy to find ready-made powders and solutions that are designed specifically for caring for natural wool. The main thing is to carefully choose the composition of the product and ensure that it does not contain alkali or chlorine. Otherwise, you can simply ruin a beautiful coat.

Washing rules

If you decide to choose wet rather than dry cleaning of a wool product, you should be very careful. It is necessary to use only gentle detergents and shampoos designed specifically for wool. The water temperature should not exceed thirty degrees. Otherwise, the product will become deformed and will look simply terrible. Do not twist or wring out the coat under any circumstances. This can seriously damage the fabric and ruin the appearance of the garment.

Today, many are interested in how to properly wash a drape, wool or cashmere coat. In this article, we will try to formulate the clearest answer possible, and also provide some tips on how to properly clean your coat at home.

There are quite a lot of methods for cleaning a coat, depending on the material from which it is made. Therefore, in the material below, we will try to provide the most common of them and suggest the most acceptable, and most importantly gentle and highly effective options for cleaning your coat.

Is it possible to wash a coat in a washing machine?

This question is more relevant than ever, because in modern life a washing machine is the first assistant of any housewife, and the cost of dry cleaning a coat remains quite high for many. Therefore, the answer will be a positive confirmation of this - you can wash your coat in the washing machine. But, in this case, you should definitely pay special attention:

  • on the properties of the detergent, since its chemical composition can irreversibly damage the product;
  • on the material from which the coat is made;
  • for the presence of lining or filling inside the product.

If the coat consists of 70-80% wool, you can safely wash it in a washing machine. Although, at the same time, you should not set the spin program at high speeds. The gentle mode will be most suitable.

Well, if the coat has inserts or is made of material that shrinks during washing, then, naturally, you cannot wash it. It is worth noting another equally important circumstance: there is no need to wash the entire product if the contamination is localized only in one place. It will be enough to produce just this place.

How to wash a drape coat in the washing machine

Before washing a drape coat, you need to make sure that there are no attached (glued) parts, because they may fall off during the washing process. After that, you should pay attention to the washing conditions specified by the manufacturer, shown on the label. In principle, washing a drape coat is carried out similarly to cashmere. However, it is worth considering one nuance: since most drape coats have glued-on inserts, they should be washed on a “delicate wash” in a soapy solution.

This solution is not at all difficult to prepare, since it contains water and detergent, which is intended for washing delicate items made of natural wool. It should be borne in mind that the soap solution should not be overly concentrated. Otherwise, it is impossible to avoid stains on the surface of the fabric. After washing, rinse the coat in clean cold water. And after all that, hang it up to dry in the open air.

But, even in the case when drape items do not have pasted inserts, washing in an automatic machine is strictly not recommended.

How to clean a wool coat at home

Dispel all doubts, cleaning a woolen coat at home is a very real and doable undertaking. The main thing is that you must follow all the rules and adhere to the conditions specified on the manufacturer’s label.

And so, firstly, during the cleaning process you should not try a newfangled product on the entire product. First, you should test it in an “invisible” place (from the inside). And, if as a result of the experiment the product has not changed its natural appearance, it is quite possible to begin cleaning the entire coat.

Secondly, any contamination should be removed, starting from the edges, gradually moving towards the center.

And, of course, given the interest in this topic, I would like to give some useful tips on how to clean a wool coat from the most common contaminants.

For example, to clean coat from grease stains , you need to sprinkle the local area with talcum powder and clean it with a soft sponge. If the result is not satisfactory, the procedure should be repeated. Also, greasy places can be cleaned well with a mixture of ammonia and salt, in a ratio of 4:1, or (do not be surprised) with gasoline. To do this, you need to moisten the contaminated area with it, then sprinkle it with salt and wipe with a rubber sponge. After that, clean with a stiff brush.

Gets rid of wine stains , you can use salt, which must be applied to the contaminated area and then washed off with water. But, as for colored coats, such a procedure is strictly prohibited!

Stains left after tea, can be easily cleaned with a solution of glycerin and alcohol in a ratio of 1:0.5, respectively.

Beer stains can be cleaned with vinegar and alcohol (1:1 ratio).

In general, in order not to worsen the condition of your outerwear, you need to take care of it every day, especially if we are talking about a coat made of wool. To do this, you can use a sticky roller or a soft brush.

When a coat becomes dirty, the item is usually dry cleaned. But you can get rid of almost any dirt on outerwear at home. It is enough to wash some types of products, but it is better to clean your coat without resorting to washing. There are several ways and means to do home dry cleaning with your own hands. You just need to adhere to certain rules and act taking into account the characteristics of the fabric of the product.

    How to prepare a product for cleaning

    Any coat that hangs on a hanger for a long time becomes covered in dust. In this case, you need to use a clothes brush, which should be soft. Hard bristles damage the fabric and spoil the appearance of the product. But even if the brush is of high quality, it must be used with caution so as not to damage the structure of the fabric.

    If necessary, hang the coat outside to air it out and get rid of the unpleasant odor. After studying the label, you should decide on the method of further processing.

    Types of cleaning

    At home, coats are cleaned in the following ways:

    1. 1. Dry cleaning. In this case, the product is treated with a soft bristle brush and various means are used in the form of aerosols or powders designed to remove contaminants without the use of water.
    2. 2. Wet cleaning. In this case, water and cleaning products are used, and the coat is wiped with a damp brush or sponge. This type of cleaning also includes treating the product with steam using a steam generator or iron.
    3. 3. Washing. Can be done in a washing machine or manually using gel products.

    The choice of cleaning method for the product depends on the type of material and degree of contamination.

    Drape coat

    Drape is a heavy, dense fabric. It does not fade, does not fade and does not wrinkle. Products made from such fabric cannot be washed in hot water, as this will cause them to shrink in size. It is advisable to clean a drape coat using dry methods.

    To get rid of dust, you need to brush in the direction of the pile. Copes well with dust and rye bread. To do this, you need to spread the product on the floor and crumble the crumb on top. The crumbs should be rolled over the surface of the fabric until balls form. Brush off any remaining crumbs with a brush.

    If the coat is light in color, then you can use dry “Vanish”, which should be sprinkled on the item, and after a while, remove the remaining powder with a brush.

    You should try to get rid of stains on your coat without washing. Dissolve a small amount of wool detergent in water and moisten the dirt on the drape with this liquid. After 5-10 minutes, wipe the coat with a damp sponge to remove soap particles.

    A greasy collar can be cleaned with black bread. To do this, you need to rub it with a crumb, then the unnecessary shine will quickly disappear. For severe contamination, use a solution of ammonia and salt in a ratio of 4:1. Treat the collar with a sponge soaked in the resulting liquid. After all procedures, the drape must be dried. To do this, hang it on a trempel in a well-ventilated area. To prevent the coat from losing its shape, it must dry completely.

    Woolen

    Wool requires careful handling. First, the woolen coat is cleaned of dust, and small debris and lint are removed with a special roller with Velcro.

    Dirty and shiny areas can be quickly and effectively cleaned using a mixture of ammonia and salt, which is applied to a cloth and removed with a brush after 10-15 minutes. Another option is to wipe the stains with a sponge, which is moistened in a solution of vinegar and alcohol mixed in equal proportions. If the wool coat is dark in color, then individual stains can be removed by brewing green tea. Soak a sponge in the liquid and wipe the dirty areas. Amwey spray removes stains well.

    If the coat is very dirty, you can use the following method: dissolve wool detergent in warm water, moisten a sponge or brush in the liquid and carefully treat the product.

    Tweed coat

    Tweed is an elastic wool fabric with a small pile. It practically does not get dirty, does not wrinkle and lasts a long time. To remove dust on a coat made of this material, use a vacuum cleaner. If the tweed is slightly dirty, dry the stain, after which the dirt is brushed off. When the dirt has already become embedded in the fabric, the dirt is soaked in soapy water and removed with a damp brush. It is highly undesirable to wash a tweed coat. If such a need arises, the product should be washed and rinsed manually in slightly warm water.

    To avoid deformation of the item, dry your tweed coat by laying it horizontally between two towels. It is necessary to iron the product from the wrong side, placing wet gauze folded in several layers between the iron and the fabric.

    Cashmere product

    Cashmere is an airy undercoat that is brushed from the sides of fluffy mountain goats. This is a very delicate and soft material, extremely sensitive to external influences. Due to strong friction, it deteriorates irrevocably.

    To remove greasy stains on a black or dark product, use:

    • petrol;
    • paper napkin or cotton pad.

    On one side of the product, apply a napkin to the stained area, and on the other, wipe the dirt with a cotton pad soaked in gasoline in a circular motion. This should be done until the fat is completely removed.

    Talc helps to deal with greasy stains on white or light cashmere. The stain is sprinkled with this product and gently “hammered” into the fabric. The product is left for 10–12 hours, after which the remaining powder is removed with a soft brush.

    Contaminants of any type are well cleaned by glycerin and ammonia, taken in a 2:1 ratio. These components are mixed and the stain is treated, after which the stain is cleaned with a soap solution.

    If a cashmere coat can be washed, then you should choose a delicate cycle without spinning, liquid detergent and a water temperature of no higher than 30 degrees. Cashmere should not be rubbed or twisted, otherwise it will lose its shape.

    In order to properly dry a product made from such fabric, after washing it needs to be lightly wrung out with your fingers and laid out horizontally on a spread towel away from direct sunlight and heating devices. You cannot dry a cashmere coat on a dryer, otherwise it will stretch. If it is necessary to iron such a product, then steam is used for this, and the iron should not touch the surface of the fabric.

    Suede coat

    Suede is a velvety and soft tanned fabric that is pleasant to the touch. To clean it from dust at home, moisten a cotton swab in ammonia and wipe the item in the direction of the pile.

    To get rid of greasy places and greasy stains, dilute a teaspoon of soda in 100 ml of milk. The solution is applied for a few minutes, after which the contaminated area is treated with a brush designed specifically for suede. Starch helps remove greasy stains by sprinkling it on problem areas and brushing it off after 2 hours.

    Stains on suede are removed with an eraser or a crust of bread. To get rid of creases, the coat is held over steam, after which it is straightened on a table or hung on a trempel.

    When cleaning a suede coat, the following are prohibited:

    • soak;
