Semi-sun skirt: an original style for any figure. How to sew pleated sun and semi-sun skirts and what to wear them with

SKIRT ON THE OBLIQUE. TAILOR'S ADVICE

A skirt cut along an oblique or its other name is a half-sun skirt, a sun skirt, probably one of the most popular models of skirts for girls and even many women. The oblique skirt is also popular because it is very easy to build a pattern for it. Even a schoolgirl can cut the fabric and sew such a flared skirt with her own hands.

The oblique skirt can be long, as in this photo "to the floor" or short. The skirt pattern can be built as a "double sun", "half sun" or "quarter sun".

The belt can be made the same as that of a regular strict skirt or with an elastic band. To further decorate the oblique skirt, you can use such a finishing element as a yoke.

How much fabric is needed to cut the skirt on the bias? It depends primarily on the length of the skirt. But, usually, 90 cm of fabric is enough for a short half-sun skirt.
Sewing such a skirt is not difficult, but it also has its own "secrets".

1. How to build a skirt pattern sun, half sun

A half-sun oblique skirt is a simple and interesting skirt solution for many women. The oblique cut of the skirt, especially the long half-sun skirt, provides for beautiful soft folds and makes the figure slimmer and more attractive.

The semi-sun skirt is cut at an angle of 45 °, in relation to the equity line of the fabric. This somewhat complicates its tailoring, since the details of the skirt, cut at such an angle, lengthen. The sections of the skirt are especially stretched in the central part of the front and back halves of light and silky fabrics. Therefore, the length of the skirt (bottom) made of light fabrics has to be aligned already in finished form. Given this feature, when cutting, it is necessary to give allowances in width slightly larger than usual, up to 5 cm.

The top photo clearly shows how the skirt differs. half sun and sun skirt. The sun skirt is rarely sewn, and mainly for festive events. But the half-sun skirt pattern is very popular, so we will pay more attention to it.

This is a somewhat simplified drawing, but this diagram clearly shows how to cut a half-sun skirt from a piece of fabric measuring 1.5 by 1.5 meters. True, the skirt will be from such a cut only to the middle of the calf. To cut the skirt longer, you need to separately calculate the fabric consumption, taking into account the length of the skirt B and the radius A.

The white line that runs from corner to corner orients the direction of the cut of the skirt along the oblique. Just along this line, the fabric is folded in half, forming an oblique angle of 45 degrees.

Part of the circle, 1/4 of your waist with radius A, should be marked if the fabric is folded in half along the fold. If you cut the fabric in expanded form, then set aside 1/2 of the waist on each side.
If the skirt has folds along the waist, then radius A should be larger and the skirt pattern will move accordingly, which will increase the consumption of fabric.

It’s quite difficult to explain all the “little things” in one article, but if you need a skirt with pleats at the waist, then first do the calculations, and you can even try to cut out the skirt on paper, “try it on” and only after that transfer the pattern to the fabric.

The drawing in this figure does not provide for folds in the belt, only a flared skirt is provided. The drawing is made in expanded form, but it is more convenient to cut the fabric when it is folded in half along an oblique line, from corner to corner, like a scarf. As a result, you will get two parts that make up the half-sun skirt.

Cut out the piece according to the pattern with 1.5 cm straight seam allowances. Turn the pattern over to cut the second half.
If there is no large cutting table, you can sit directly on the floor. It is important that the fabric does not move during marking, this often happens when cutting plastic fabrics such as chiffon.

It is quite simple to cut out a slanting skirt even from plaid fabric, but in order to sew it correctly, you need to know some features of the sewing technology of a slanted skirt.
First of all, it must be taken into account that the direction of the warp and weft threads affects the "fit" when sewing seams. In addition, oblique cutting of thin and plastic fabrics is quite complicated, and a number of nuances must be taken into account.

The oblique half-sun skirt is cut and sewn easily and simply at first glance. In fact, you need to be able to correctly combine the edges cut along the oblique so that the top edges do not stretch relative to the bottom.

The fact is that the center of the assembled skirt will be located along an oblique line, at an angle of 45 degrees, and the side seams will be in different directions. That is, one edge of the skirt will have a shared direction, and the other will be transverse. And when sewing, one of the sides, especially for an inexperienced seamstress, will "sit down" in relation to the other and will certainly be longer when assembled.

There is another defect that occurs when sewing a semi-sun or sun skirt. It lies in the fact that the central line of the front and back halves "sag", especially if the skirt is made of thin plastic fabrics. This will be especially noticeable when you put on an already sewn skirt.

Be sure to baste the side seams well before sewing them on the machine, trying not to evenly distribute the fabric. And the hanging edges in the center of the skirt will need to be cut off, but only after the skirt "sags".
Fabrics with a satin weave are especially difficult to align "on the bottom" in the finished product, so skirts made from such fabrics should "sag" for at least a day on a hanger or hooks.

After that, put on the skirt, and with the bottom of the skirt not hemmed, ask another person to mark the new line of the bottom of the skirt from the floor, taking into account the sagging of the back and front of the skirt. This is done with a long line.
The ruler is placed on the floor with one edge, and you must constantly turn around. Another person at this time makes marks with chalk on the skirt. Just be sure to put on the skirt correctly so that it is exactly at the waist, and turn around slowly. Now you can cut off the excess fabric and hem the edges.

Skirts sun, half sun can be performed on a yoke, with a stitched belt or without a belt, with flounces. To make the skirt look even more elegant, you can use bows and many other decorative elements.
If the fabric is lightweight, then an elastic band can be inserted into the belt. The belt for such a skirt is cut out in one piece (doubly) with the direction along the shared thread. Width of the belt is up to you, just don't forget to add allowances for the seams.

Bias-cut skirts with an elastic waistband are very easy to make and comfortable to wear. This is especially important for obese women. The elastic does not have to be put on the entire width of the belt, you can insert only two pieces, along the side seams. But, such a stretchable belt does not create inconvenience if you have to sit at the table for a long time.

Another piece of advice - do not try to sew a semi-sun skirt from striped fabrics, the result will not be important, and most likely you will not wear it. Even plaid fabrics are hard to cut for such a skirt. It takes a very long time to combine the cage, which only an experienced seamstress can do and sometimes greatly increases the consumption of fabric.

Many people like to sew half-sun skirts from satin fabrics, especially black. Unfortunately, the atlas has one feature - it is the different shades of the sides. And it is on black that it manifests itself most of all.
When you bring the side seams together, this effect will be very noticeable, as the satin will shine differently on the front and back of the skirt. It is the half-sun skirt that has this feature, the pattern of which is made obliquely. In straight models of skirts, the fabric is cut along a shared thread and this effect does not occur.

Lay the fabric on your hand before cutting. If the fabric stretches strongly down and narrows in width, then after cutting and sewing, the finished skirt will also “drain” down and become long and narrow. Therefore, for a very plastic fabric, it is necessary to give allowances up to 5 cm wide when cutting, but at the bottom, the allowance can not be done at all. Be prepared for the fact that such a fabric will “flow around” your body like a second skin and emphasize all the bumps in the body. It is necessary to sew such a skirt or dress with a lining.

Draw the directions of the threads on the pattern at an angle of 45 ° relative to the main equity line. Lay the pattern on the fabric in one layer so that the new lines lie along the equity threads. If you do not want to make such markings, you can simply fold the fabric in a corner, like a scarf, so you can easily determine the main line without marking.

Today, many romantic natures choose unusual clothing models that will not only declare their originality, but also emphasize their figure favorably. One of such popular elements in women's wardrobe is a half-sun skirt. In fact, it is a long or short version of a peculiarly tailored skirt, the parts of which form a semicircle (based on this, the model got its name). What to wear with a half-sun skirt, to whom it suits and how to find the right color for this element - today's article will answer.

The style of the semi-sun skirt is simultaneously included in the category of classic and elegant clothes and is distinguished by a slight eccentricity in cut. Since two pieces of material are used to make a model, designers very often experiment both with the length of the finished product and with different fabrics, composing them and getting, at times, simply stunningly beautiful results. For example, in winter, designer collections are replenished with woolen skirts, and in summer, fashionistas are presented with various options from knitwear and silk. In addition, trends are constantly changing, allowing girls to show off either in a plaid skirt or in a plain one.

Since many designers today present this style in their collections, there are several variations of it:

  • Skirt to the knees. This model looks best on long-legged beauties. Tall and slender girls can choose a bright half-sun skirt with a yoke, complementing it with less flashy accessories and high-heeled shoes. To look truly stylish, it is recommended to choose a classic blouse and a fitted jacket for a skirt. It is worth noting that a knee-length skirt can also go for plump ladies, if you correctly focus on the length and do not highlight the waistline.

  • Floor skirt. The so-called midi version is considered the most popular (photos of models in such designer products can be seen in many glossy magazines), since it not only looks good on almost all figures, but also allows you to wear a more “loose top”. For example, a semi-sun skirt looks attractive in combination with a white top and properly selected accessories. If you want to remove some flaws, you can also choose a thin strap for this image, which can emphasize the waist and hide figure flaws that make you nervous.

  • Skirt-semi-sun with a flare. This model vaguely resembles a long gypsy skirt, however, it is a great and stylish option, also suitable for any type of figure. A feature of this model is the complete absence of seams, which distinguishes it from ordinary skirts. It is best to wear a flared product in autumn, especially if it is made of silk or knitwear. To create an elegant look that emphasizes your romance, you can match the skirt with a satin shirt and bright, eye-catching accessories - be sure that those around you will definitely notice you!

Features and nuances of style

Now let's move on to a more detailed description and consider what to wear with. plaid midi skirt. It is believed that among all the others, this particular option is the classic (basic), which makes it the most popular and in demand. However, the fair sex should always remember that not everyone is wearing a cage, which greatly complicates the choice of both a skirt and a style in general. Organically and stylishly, this model looks on slender girls who do not complex about their figure. They can safely wear a checkered half-sun skirt with knitted blouses or translucent blouses, complementing the look with retro glasses and a small bag. However, overweight women are not recommended to choose such a skirt model, otherwise it will only emphasize your fullness and figure flaws. If, nevertheless, the product has already been bought (for example, out of ignorance), then wedge shoes (or with a small separate heel) and a fitted shirt of a classic cut will help save the situation. In this case, the length of the skirt should not be below the knees.

Her flowing silhouette can hide too wide hips or, on the contrary, compensate for their absence, can emphasize the waistline and even visually enlarge the chest. Therefore, if your wardrobe still does not have such a thing, we strongly recommend that you purchase it. Moreover, a half-sun skirt or a dress with a half-sun skirt can be sewn from almost any fabric - from silk to denim.

The history of the half-sun skirt

Not a single fashion historian will tell you today with reliable accuracy who invented the style of such a skirt. One thing is clear - the history of the half-sun skirt is inextricably linked with the sun-flared skirt. These two models are very similar to each other, but their main difference is that the flared skirt is sewn from a circle, without any connecting seams, but the half-sun skirt is created from a semicircle and has at least one hitch. Moreover, it may not necessarily be a seam, there are also half-sun skirts with a smell.

Most likely, the half-sun skirt was created as an amateurish imitation of the hourglass silhouettes of women's clothing that were fashionable in the 50s and 60s of the last century. However, this copy turned out to be so successful that today almost no collection of prominent designers can do without such a skirt in its various variations.

Variety of models

Despite the fact that all half-sun skirts are based on the same cutting principle, they differ markedly from each other. First of all, models of half-sun skirts differ in their length - from ultramini to long ones with a train. In addition, there are different fabrics to create these skirts. A half sun can be sewn from silk, satin, jeans, cotton, velveteen, velvet and even wool - it all depends on what time of the year this thing will be worn and on what occasion.

Also interesting is the variety of defining the waistline in such styles. For example, there is a half-sun skirt on a yoke, which, as a rule, fastens with a zipper and a button and focuses a lot of attention on the waist. Such skirts are most suitable for slender girls who want to draw the attention of others to their thin silhouette. There is a half-sun skirt with an elastic band - a more simplified, everyday option that is suitable for all types of figures. There are also skirts with belts (both thin and wide), wrap skirts, skirts with side fastenings, etc.
