Days of military glory and memorable dates of Russia in 2016
The list is given in accordance with Federal Law No. 32-FZ of March 13, 1995, with subsequent amendments. Dates of battles that took place before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar are obtained in the Law by adding 13 days to the "old calendar" date. However, the difference between the old and the new style of 13 days accumulated only by the 20th century. And, for example, in the XVII century the difference was 10 days. Therefore, other dates are accepted in historical science than in this law.
The following days of Russian military glory are established in the Russian Federation:
- January 27, 2016- Day of the complete liberation by the Soviet troops of the city of Leningrad from the blockade of its Nazi troops (1944);
- February 2, 2016- Day of the defeat of the Nazi troops by the Soviet troops in the Battle of Stalingrad (1943);
- February 23, 2016- Defender of the Fatherland Day;
- April 18, 2016 - Victory Day of the Russian soldiers of Prince Alexander Nevsky over the German knights on Lake Peipus (Battle on the Ice, 1242, actually happened on April 12 according to the new style or April 5 according to the old one);
- May 9, 2016- 71st anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 (1945);
- July 7, 2016- Day of the victory of the Russian fleet over the Turkish fleet in the Battle of Chesma (1770);
- July 10, 2016- Victory Day of the Russian army under the command of Peter the Great over the Swedes in the Battle of Poltava (1709, actually happened on July 8 according to the new style or June 27 according to the old style);
- August 9, 2016- The day of the first naval victory in Russian history of the Russian fleet under the command of Peter the Great over the Swedes at Cape Gangut (1714, actually happened on August 7);
- August 23, 2016 - Day of the defeat of the Nazi troops by the Soviet troops in the Battle of Kursk (1943);

UNESCO announced:
2016 World Book Capital status awarded to the city of Wroclaw in Poland. The city was awarded this honorary title for successful projects to promote the culture of reading, support libraries and develop publishing activities.
Wroclaw became the 16th World Book Capital. Its predecessors are Madrid (Spain, 2001), Alexandria (Egypt, 2002), New Delhi (India, 2003), Antwerp (Belgium, 2004), Montreal (Canada, 2005), Turin (Italy, 2006), Bogotá (Colombia, 2007), Amsterdam (Netherlands, 2008), Beirut (Lebanon, 2009), Ljubljana (Slovenia, 2010), Buenos Aires (Argentina) , 2011), Yerevan (Armenia, 2012), Bangkok (Thailand 2013), Port Harcourt (Nigeria, 2014) and Incheon (Korea, 2015).
2016 in Russia:
Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation Sergey Donskoy proposed to declare 2016 - Year of Specially Protected Natural Territories. Recall that in 1916, the first in Russia Barguzinsky Reserve (Republic of Buryatia) was created on Baikal.
2016 officially announced cross year of Greece and Russia. The order was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Greek-Russian year was originally supposed to take place in 2014, but at the request of the Greek side, due to the economic crisis and the Greek presidency of the EU in the first half of 2014, it was postponed to 2016.
The cross-year program includes joint events in the fields of education, language, science, cultural heritage, art, sports and youth exchanges.
2016 announced Cross Year of Language and Literature of Russia and Great Britain. It will open on February 25 in London with a screening of the film "Anna Karenina" starring Greta Garbo. Its main theme will be the work of William Shakespeare. Program information here.

July 11 - World Chocolate Day. It was first invented by the French in 1995. The world's first monument to chocolate was opened on July 1, 2009 in the city of Pokrov, Vladimir Region.

July 1 - 115 years since the birth Vladimir Alexandrovich LUGOVSKY(1901-1957), Russian poet. The first verses were mainly about civil war. Lugovsky's poetry from the very beginning is characterized by an internal duality, which over timebecame more and more dramatic and even tragic. In the poet and his heroes, the reflexive intellectual and the strong-willed soldier of the revolution, feeling and duty, personal attachments and the harsh demands of the era are constantly fighting. September 3 - Day of Solidarity in the fight against terrorism. The date was established by the federal law "On the Days of Military Glory of Russia" dated July 6, 2005. It is connected with the tragic events in Beslan (North Ossetia, September 1-3, 2004), when militants seized one of the city's schools.
