Cuffs on trousers. Lengthen the trousers with cuffs. Trousers with elasticated cuffs

Hello, dear readers!

The use of cuffs in the processing of the bottom of trousers has made it possible to significantly expand the range of modern trousers. This means that for you and me, dear sewing lovers, the horizons for creativity have expanded even more, new “tools” have been added for self-expression through clothing.

So, as I already said in the previous article, the cuffs can be one-piece (together with the trouser legs) and stitched.

With the help of stitched cuffs, you can significantly influence the silhouette of the trouser model, determine whether they belong to one type or another, or lengthen them. And such an elongation can be significant, d-o-o-o... in general according to the model. With the help of stitched cuffs, trousers can also be “reanimated” (the frayed bottom of the trousers can be cut off and “decorated” again with cuffs).

Finishing the bottom of the trousers with stitched cuffs.

Cuffs for trousers are not as varied in shape as for sleeves. We will talk more thoroughly about cuffs when we move on to familiarizing ourselves with cuffs on the sleeves. In the meantime, a little general information.

On finished trousers, one half of the cuff is always on the front side of the product, and the other, the same, on the back.

Therefore, paper cuff patterns are laid out on a piece of fabric in such a way that when cutting it, you are guaranteed to get one piece (cuff) with a fold.

From two or more parts, the cuff is “assembled” into one whole for only one reason - due to a shortage of tissue.

Whether the trousers are tapered to the bottom, whether they are wide or straight, whether the cuff on the trousers is gathered at the bottom or not, the blank for the cuff for them is always a rectangle with allowances (0.7 -1.5 cm, according to the model) around the entire perimeter.

The cuff should give the bottom edge of the finished trousers stability and completeness. Therefore, for rigidity, the side of the cuff that will be on the finished trousers from the face is reinforced with adhesive cushioning materials (non-woven fabric). In addition, when laying out the cuff pattern on the fabric, it is positioned so that the grain thread on the finished cuff runs parallel to the bottom line of the trousers.

Stitched cuffs come in two types. Let’s call them conventionally: “closed ring” and “broken ring” stitched cuffs.

Closed ring stitched cuff.

So, a “closed ring” stitched cuff is most often one piece with a fold. It can be cut from the main fabric and from additional (finishing) fabric.

The cuff width L is determined by the model.

And the length is linked to the length of the trouser leg it processes along the bottom edge (according to the model). On some models of trousers, the cuffs gather the bottom edge of the trousers, on others they are simply stitched on as parts that “complete” the hem of the trousers.

But in any case, the width of the cuff + the length of the main part of the trouser leg (along the side seam) make up the single length of the finished trousers.

Now let’s proceed to the actual production of “closed ring” cuffs on the trousers. The short, transverse sides of the part - the blanks for the cuff - are folded facing each other and connected with a machine stitch. The seam allowances are ironed out and the piece is folded in half.

This is done with woven and knitted two-layer blanks for cuffs. Knitted single-layer cuffs are extremely rare on trousers.

Well, the cuff is ready! Now the bottom of the trousers...

  1. There are trouser models with closed-ring stitched cuffs that follow the width of the trouser leg along the bottom edge and do not change it in any way.
  2. In other models, the cuffs are slightly narrower than the bottom of the trouser leg and only fit it closer.
  3. And for some, the bottom of the trouser leg is gathered and even folded with soft folds (according to the model) before connecting to the cuff.

If necessary, we do all the “manipulations” with the bottom of the trousers and proceed to directly making cuffs on the trousers.

All closed ring stitched cuffs are attached to the main part of the trouser leg in 2 ways.

1st method.

Connecting stitch seam on the edge with processing of seam allowance cuts to prevent fraying. The cut along the bottom of the trouser leg is combined with open cuts of the long longitudinal side of the cuff, swept away

and are connected to each other using machine stitching.

(Ideal for attaching knit cuffs to trouser legs).

2nd method.

First, the cut on the outer part of the cuff is connected with a stitch seam to the lower cut on the trouser leg.

Then the cuff is folded in half and the inner part, folded over the folded allowance,

1) sewn with hidden stitches to the stitch line of the seam.

2) or the fold of the cuff allowance folded from the inside of the trousers can be secured by placing a finishing stitch on the front side of the cuff, or a stitch to the edge, along the seam of the outer side of the cuff.

All closed ring stitched cuffs are attached to the trouser legs so that the seam on the cuff is like a continuation of the crotch seam.

The cuffs, already ready, can also be gathered using elastic bands (elastic bands of the required width). Moreover, there may be 1, 2, 3 or more “tunnels” delayed on the elastic cuffs (according to the model).

This is the information I have for you today, dear sewing lovers. I hope you find it useful.

On the trousers you can also make “broken ring” stitched cuffs. You can read about this in the next article.

That's all for today! All the best to everyone! Sincerely, Milla Sidelnikova!

The article presents photos that show step by step the process of lengthening trousers.

  1. It is necessary to rip the bottom of the pants, as in the picture below.
  2. Prepare two strips of any material that needs to be sewn to the trousers, taking into account the extra length for the seams.
  3. Sew the cuffs into rolls and iron the seam.
  4. Pin the cuffs to the pants, aligning the seams on the cuffs in the center so they touch.
  5. Straighten the cuffs well and iron the seam area with the trousers.
  6. Turn the cuff inside out and check again that the length is the same on both legs.
  7. Fold up the free edge of the cuff and iron. Depending on the type of material chosen, the cuffs may need to be pinned to make ironing easier.
  8. Attach the cuff to the trousers along the line marked with a red arrow in the figure. This is the line along which we ripped the trouser leg in the first step.
  9. Sew the cuffs to the trousers, as close to the edge as possible.

This is a view of the sewn cuff from the inside:

How to lengthen jeans: women's, children's, men's

Sometimes jeans are perfect, but they are not long enough. It’s especially depressing if you love jeans and simply fit perfectly into your wardrobe. This problem is common in children and adolescents. In adults, clothes often become shorter after washing. Let's look at how to lengthen jeans beautifully without ruining the product.

Necessary materials

Before starting the process, you should prepare materials. To change the length you will need:

  • scissors;
  • a stationery knife, seam ripper or nail scissors;
  • threads with a similar shade of material or finishing stitch;
  • sewing machine or games for hand sewing; for knitwear and elastic products, it is preferable to choose an overlocker;
  • centimeter and ruler;
  • soap or chalk;
  • fabric scraps, trouser braid for men's products (if it is not included in the model), decorative braid or lace for girls;
  • iron, piece of gauze;
  • knitted fabric for sports pants; elastic material can be used as cuffs.

How to add length to jeans

Before starting the process, measurements should be taken. First, take a measurement called “pants length along the side seam.” You need to measure the length of the item from the waist down. If long pants will be worn with high-heeled shoes, you should wear them during measurements. The jeans can be any length after alteration. The maximum is the following:

  • Classic men's trousers require a pleat in the front. It is necessary so that your socks are not noticeable while walking. At the back, the bottom of the pants should be located between the center of the heel and the top edge of the sole;
  • For modern European trousers for men, you should choose a length shorter than the classic options by no more than 2 cm;
  • Classic women's products should be the length of the center of the heel;
  • The length of children's clothes depends on the specific case and preferences. Clothing for a child should be comfortable. It is considered optimal when the trousers cover the ankle.

You should measure the length of the item along the side seam and compare it with the measurement taken. The main calculated characteristic below will be the difference between them. It is also worth measuring the width of the trouser legs, taking into account seam allowances. Along the bottom edge they will be 3 cm, along the side seam and stitching line - 1.5 cm. For lace and braid, allowances along the bottom edge are not needed.

This method is suitable for old favorite items that you don’t want to say goodbye to. At the bottom, the jeans have lost their former appeal, but that's no reason to throw them away.

How to sew a cuff to jeans

Let's look at some interesting ideas on how to lengthen children's jeans by 5 cm or more:

  1. Open the hem seam at the bottom of the trouser leg, fold the cut to the minimum allowable length, add lace for women's or children's products, or sew a cuff from another fabric of a suitable color;
  2. Release the seam from the bottom of the trouser leg and hem it with tape. It is important to lay a finishing stitch on top, choosing threads with the appropriate shade;
  3. Cut off part of the trouser leg and make an insert from a different material.

Sometimes the item shrinks after washing. Then you need to follow this algorithm:

  1. Flog the finishing line from the bottom of the pants, remove the protruding threads;
  2. Process the cut. For this purpose, use an overlock stitch on a machine.

Important: When lengthening skinny jeans, you should place the lace on the overlock seam and sew a fixing stitch in a circle.

The design technique with lace is used for women's products. When choosing high-quality decorative tape, the item will look stylish. You can use the method for products for little girls who have outgrown jeans but don't want to part with them.

Interesting ideas for decorating jeans that will add a few centimeters in length

For the third method, you will need a snipper, a utility knife or nail scissors.

  1. Carefully unpick the finishing stitch at the bottom of the trouser leg;
  2. Unfold the edge, process the folds with a steam iron;
  3. Measure the required length and draw a line with soap. The markings will show the new edge of the trouser leg;
  4. Decide on the method of processing the bottom. When using trouser tape, you do not need to use an overlocker for cuts. On the cut at the top of the fabric, attach the braid with an edging to the trouser leg. It is important that the gap from the tape to the edge of the trouser leg is approximately 0.5 cm. Then sew a line;
  5. Fold the braid to the wrong side and make a finishing stitch along the bottom of the trouser leg.

When lengthening your child’s jeans, do not overdo it with decor - use no more than three elements

To lengthen the low waist of old but favorite flared jeans, you need to do it yourself:

  1. Choose fabric for the belt;
  2. Undo the belt loops and carefully remove the button;
  3. Sew the new belt to the middle of the old one so that the loop is above the sewing line;
  4. Fold the belt so that the inner cut is under the top line of the old belt;
  5. Mark the inflection line;
  6. Process the sections of the new belt, sew up the darts, lay a strip of denim material along the fold line to increase the density;
  7. Sew on the old harnesses, process the loops and button. Thus, the low rise was transformed into a fashionable high rise.

How to lengthen men's jeans

Such products can be extended with a cuff. It is made from fabric similar to jeans, or in contrast to them. To lengthen children's jeans for boys, choose a bright contrasting material, a floral theme, children's drawings, or a checkered pattern.

Men's jeans are often lengthened, reducing the cuff, but you can experiment: make a cuff from plaid fabric or sew on a wide elastic band

To lengthen men's jeans at the bottom, you need to follow the following algorithm:

  • Measure the circumference of the leg at the bottom, add 2 cm to the side seams;
  • Determine the width of the cuff, cut a similar part from non-woven fabric;
  • Sew the cuff to the inside of the trouser leg;
  • Sew an edging stitch along the cuff;
  • Iron the second cut of the cuff by 1 centimeter so that on the front area the edge of the cuff looks neat and even;
  • Place the cuff on the front area of the trouser leg, sew a line;
  • Carry out heat treatment.

You can sew on an elastic cuff made of denim or knitwear. This will be a fashionable and practical option.

Ideas for women's trousers

The use of lace is an excellent method for women's products and the answer to the question of how to lengthen jeans for a child or girl. It is suitable for summer and spring options.

Feel free to get creative with women's jeans

Important: When choosing lace, you need to look at the symmetry of the edges and the density of the jeans fabric. You should not buy knitted lace. Its width should be identical to its extension. Any area of insertion: below the trouser leg, below the knee or above it.

Let's look at how to lengthen women's jeans:

Make a cut in the part where the lace will be located. Cut the side seam of the trouser leg (it is better to give preference to the inner one) slightly by 3-4 cm. Machine the edges of the trouser leg and the cut piece with a large zigzag.

You can sew lace using two methods:

  1. Fold the edges of the trouser leg to the wrong side by 5 mm, iron or baste by hand. Sew the lace on top, but do not stretch the material so that it does not form folds. It turns out neatly, but you should understand that the seam will be thick;
  2. This method does not involve tucking the edge, so the seam is thin and even neater than in the previous version. Move 0.5 cm from the edge, which is zigzag-edged, and stitch the lace with a zigzag. You should take this feature into account when purchasing tape.

Sew the bottom lace area using any method. Do not stretch the material. Re-stitch the side seams of the legs. Treat side shock zigzags to ensure greater reliability.

Lengthening jeans is possible using a soap solution and water. This method will not add inches, but will restore the original length if the jeans have shrunk after washing. To ensure a gentle effect, it is better to use baby shampoo.

To lengthen short jeans without sewing, you need:

  1. Fill a bathtub or large basin with warm water, pour in one cap of baby shampoo;
  2. Immerse the product in water, wait 30 minutes;
  3. Remove from the bath and wait for the liquid to drain. You should not wring out the item;
  4. Remove excess moisture by rolling the product in a terry towel. Roll the jeans with a tight roller along the length of the legs, pressing so that the liquid is absorbed into the terry. Do several repetitions, periodically changing the towel;
  5. Lay the wet jeans on a dry towel and begin to carefully pull out the trouser legs. The process occurs gradually, along the entire length from the waistline to the bottom;
  6. After maximum stretching, dry the item in a vertical position. After this, the jeans will lengthen a little.

  • Before starting extension work, you need to wash the products;
  • You need to choose materials for inserts carefully and sew them on with the utmost care. The new material should not tighten the base;
  • It is better to choose light fabric; sewing heavy fabric to the product is much more difficult;
  • Stretch by hand should be wetted items without any torn areas. The existing holes will lose their attractiveness during the process and will look sloppy;
  • The stretching procedure should be especially careful near rhinestones, embroidery, and appliqués.

Lengthening jeans is a creative process. There are many options and everyone will choose the right one, based on the model, material, personal experience and imagination.

How to lengthen jeans - women's, men's, children's. Methods and ideas for lengthening

Lengthening jeans at home

A situation often arises: jeans are good for everyone, just add some length! This happens to children and teenagers all the time, and some men's or women's trousers become shorter after washing. You should not immediately put the item aside as unusable. Jeans can be lengthened. We'll tell you how to do this at home.

Preliminary stage

You need to prepare for work by checking that you have everything you need. In addition to a sewing machine (and an overlocker if possible), when lengthening jeans you will need:

  • Needles of different sizes and pins for basting and joining materials.
  • Matching thread color and quality.
  • Scissors.
  • The material for marking fabric is chalk, a small piece of soap.
  • Measuring tools: measuring tape, ruler, square.
  • Material for lengthening (denim, lace, cotton, etc.) and for processing (trouser tape).

Choosing a way to do the job

You need to think about the option of lengthening your jeans in advance. You can add the necessary centimeters to your pants using another material: in the form of inserts into the main fabric or cuffs. The trousers will become a little longer if you reduce the size of the hem at the bottom of the legs. Each method has its own characteristics.

Basic ways to lengthen jeans

Changing a Hem Seam

The easiest way is to keep the hem to a minimum.

Operating procedure:

  • It is necessary to open the seam that secures the hem. The work is done from the wrong side, carefully cutting the threads without damaging the material.
  • Threads are removed from the front and back sides of the trousers.
  • The lapel is straightened, the fabric is carefully ironed, using steam if necessary, trying to ensure that the mark from the lapel ceases to remain noticeable.
  • The new length of the jeans is applied to the fabric with chalk or soap.
  • The cut of the material is processed. To do this, you can make a special seam or sew on a trouser braid.
  • The processed bottom of the trouser leg is folded to the intended length, and the resized hem is sewn on.

Advice! The threads should be cut using small scissors with sharp ends. Nail scissors are best suited for this.

Important! The braid is not sewn directly to the cut of the trouser leg. It is secured with the same fabric so that about 5 mm remains from the cut of the trousers to the braid.

Insert from another material

The panels lengthen the pants, adding more centimeters than the cuff. This work is more painstaking and requires suitable material. You can use lace or even multi-colored cotton fabric as inserts.

Operating procedure:

  • The side seam of the trouser leg is ripped out.
  • A line of inserts is outlined on the jeans.

Advice! It is more advisable to make inserts in the lower part of the trouser leg (below the knee), which stretches less in width during use.

  • The pant leg is carefully cut to add the insert.
  • An insert of the required size is cut from the additional material. The width should match the width of the opened trouser leg.
  • The insert is sewn to each part of the leg, below and above the slit. The edges of the seams are processed.
  • After ironing the trouser leg, a side seam is sewn.
  • The same work is done on the second leg.

Using an insert at the bottom of the trousers, you can not only lengthen them, but also add an additional finishing element to the trousers - a cuff. This will give your usual pants a new look.

The work can be done in several ways.

Method 1 - lace cuff

This option requires minimal action and does not require ripping out existing seams.

Operating procedure:

  • The width of the bottom edge of the trouser leg is carefully measured.
  • A suitable piece is cut from lace of a suitable height. It must exceed the measured width taking into account the seam allowance (1 - 1.3 cm).
  • A side seam is made on the lace fabric.
  • The lace is sewn to the bottom of the trouser leg. This work can be done manually. If the length allows, the hem is not ripped off in this case. If necessary, the hem is torn off, the lace is sewn to the denim with a machine seam, and the fabric cut is processed.
  • Carefully iron the trouser legs so as not to damage the lace.
Method 2 - fabric cuff

You can also make a cuff from a fabric of suitable color and quality.

Operating procedure:

  • The bottom edge of the trouser leg is measured.
  • A rectangle is cut out of the selected fabric - the future cuff.

Advice! The cuff pattern should be 2.5 cm wider than the trouser leg (for stitching). The recommended cuff height is 6.5 – 7 cm.

  • The hem of the jeans is peeled off, the threads are removed, and the fabric is ironed.
  • A side seam is made on the cuff, and the fabric cut is processed.
  • The top edge of the cuff is connected to the bottom edge of the pant leg. The work is done first with pins, then a basting seam is made, after fitting - machine stitching and fabric processing.
  • At the bottom of the cuff, the fabric is reinforced with interlining or a special edging and a hem is made.
  • The trouser leg is ironed, similar actions are performed on the second trouser leg.

Features of lengthening jeans for men

The most suitable way to lengthen men's jeans is to sew on a cuff made of a different material.

Not many representatives of the stronger sex consider it appropriate to use lace or bright fabric with a floral print, which is acceptable when working with children's trousers. Also, teenagers and young people who want to look unusually stylish at the same time do not refuse such cuffs.

For more reserved men, a companion fabric that matches the quality and texture of the fabric would be more appropriate. The cuff can also be contrasting in color; a cuff made of checkered or striped fabric looks original.

Features of lengthening jeans for women

Representatives of the fairer sex most often choose to work with lace, which transforms their usual jeans. Openwork fabric will suit almost any thing; it is only inappropriate on insulated winter trousers.

Features of lengthening jeans for children

Lengthening jeans for children is a good way to extend the use of items that have not yet worn out, remain durable and comfortable. When working with children's things, you can give complete freedom to creativity and imagination. You can transform pants for babies using all available methods: inserts, cuffs, reducing hems. Any bright fabric, floral or polka dot prints are allowed.

Advice! When choosing a material, avoid using knitwear, which does not stretch the same as denim. Be sure to ensure that the cotton fabric you choose is fade-resistant.

The main peculiarity of working with children's jeans is the correct choice of place for the inserts. It should not coincide with the pockets, so it is easiest to work along the bottom line of the pants.

Another way to lengthen children's jeans is to change the waistband. It needs to be torn off, straightened and smoothed out. To make the belt larger, the entire denim fabric is made with the right side, and for the back, another part of the same size is cut out. The wrong part is applied from the front side, sewn on the sides and top, and turned inside out. Now the back of the belt has a different look. The new belt is sewn to the trousers, and the cuts are processed.

Jeans are lengthened not only by alterations. You can stretch your trousers to length using water and a soap solution. This method will not add additional centimeters to the pants, but will return them to their original length if the pants “shrink” after washing.

To stretch the fabric we will use a soap solution.

Advice! To achieve results and a gentle effect on denim, it is best to use shampoo for children.

Operating procedure

  • A large container (baby bath, bathtub, large, etc.) is filled with warm water and baby shampoo (1 cap) is added.
  • Jeans are completely immersed in water and left in it for at least 0.5 hours.
  • After this, the pants are taken out of the container and wait a while for the water to drain. There is no need to squeeze!
  • Remaining moisture is removed by rolling the jeans in a large terry towel. The pants are rolled up with a tight roller along the length of the legs, pressing on them so that the water is absorbed into the towel. The procedure is repeated several times, replacing the wet towel with a dry one.
  • The remaining wet jeans are laid out freely on dry terry cloth - a sheet or towel. Methodically, carefully, but they stretch the legs. The work is done gradually, along the entire length, starting from the waistline, moving down.
  • Having stretched the material as much as possible, proceed to drying. Jeans are dried by hanging vertically.
  • Carry out work on lengthening jeans on a clean product, after pre-washing.
  • Carefully select materials for inserts, sew them carefully and carefully. Make sure that the new fabric does not tighten the base.
  • Experienced craftswomen prefer light fabrics: sewing heavy material to jeans is more difficult.
  • It is better to stretch wet jeans that do not have torn parts. Existing tension holes can look untidy and unattractive.
  • Be careful when stretching the fabric near appliques, embroidery or rhinestones.

Take your time, be patient and careful - and the result of the work will please you and your loved ones!

some interesting ideas for inspiration

Author: Faina

While preparing for the last publication about mending and lengthening sleeves, I found several interesting photos on the topic of how you can change the length of other parts of clothing. I present to you a selection of ideas that I found interesting.

Nowadays, of course, repairing and extending old things is not so relevant: in the era of the heyday of mass markets, it is easier to buy new clothes than to remake old ones. However, sometimes it’s a pity to throw away your favorite thing; you want to update or refresh it. Most often, shortening is not difficult, but lengthening beautifully is a little more difficult.

As practice shows, even on new things, length adjustments are now often imitated. Let's start with skirts and dresses. For example, transparent fabric inserts in the hems of women's clothing.

Of course, the most popular way is to add strips of fabric or lace and braid along the bottom of the product.

I really liked the options with figured and contrasting inserts.

You can lengthen your trousers in the same way: cuffs made of contrasting fabric, lace or fancy inserts along the bottom of the trousers look at least not boring.

A more radical transformation of trousers may consist in placing openwork (and other) inserts not at the bottom of the trouser leg, but in the middle, as well as in combining the decoration of pockets and waistband with similar lace. The option with knitted cuffs and a change in the shape of the trousers may appeal to sporty girls.

There are plenty of options for blouses and knitted jumpers! The most popular is lace inserts at the bottom of the product. I didn’t give many examples, because this option for decoration and extension is the most common. The main thing is that the inserts look harmonious.

You can extend it not only along the bottom, but also by inserting strips in the middle of the product, if the model allows. Lace and sewing can be successfully replaced with contrasting fabric.

And finally, an idea found on the Internet for lovers of layers and frills: it is not at all necessary to sew the insert to the product! You can make a kind of “skirt” and wear it under any favorite jumper, depending on your look and mood. And if you make it from several different colors and textures, then the number of sets will tend to infinity.

I hope that I didn’t bore you with my selection.

Be beautiful, creative and irresistible!

Cuffs on trousers. How to sew cuffs to trousers? Types of cuffs. Photo

Friends, hello everyone!

As I announced in the last article, today we will be making “broken ring” stitched cuffs.

Let me remind you, dear sewing enthusiasts, that cuffs for finishing the bottom of trousers can be one-piece and stitched.

Stitched cuffs, in turn, are divided into two types. To avoid confusion, I gave them conventional names, and I call them “closed ring” and “broken ring” stitched cuffs. We got acquainted with “closed ring” cuffs in a previous publication.

Broken ring cuffs, in turn, are also divided into two types. Stitched cuffs “broken circle”, which on the finished product are joined end-to-end or overlapped.

Stitched cuff “broken ring” with the ends of the cuffs meeting end to end.

“Broken ring” cuffs with ends converging end-to-end are made only after all the requirements for the model have been completed along the bottom of the trousers (on both halves, front and back):

  • seating the bottom of trousers or individual areas on them;
  • gathering the bottom of trousers or individual areas on them;
  • tucks;
  • darts;
  • folds, etc.

And in the seam, this is always a side seam, there is a cut or a fastener.

Unlike closed ring cuffs, both types of open ring cuffs are attached to the leg starting at the side seam. 1 is a side seam, 2 is an instep seam.

The cutting detail, a blank for a “broken ring” cuff with the ends of the cuffs meeting end-to-end, is a rectangle with seam allowances along the entire perimeter.

The width of the blank for the cuff according to the model (consider that this is 1 part with a fold) plus 0.7 - 1.5 cm allowances along the long longitudinal sides.

The length is the length of the bottom of the trousers in the prepared form (see above in the article) plus seam allowances of 0.7 - 1.5 cm, along the short transverse sides.

We reinforce with adhesive interlining material (non-woven fabric) the side of the cuff that will be on the front side of the finished trousers.

Place the cuffs and trouser legs with right sides facing each other. Leaving seam allowances “overboard” along the short transverse sides of the cuff,

we combine the cuts along the bottom of the trousers and the cuff (from the side of the reinforced part of the part),

and sew the cuff to the bottom of the trousers.

Then we sew the cuff onto the trouser leg using a machine stitch.

The ends of the stitching (at the side seam) are secured with bartacks.

Iron the seam allowances on the cuff.

After this, we sweep the allowance along the other longitudinal side of the cuff onto the wrong side of the cuff.

And iron the resulting fold.

We sew seams on the short transverse sides of the cuff.

We lay the lines at right angles to the long sides of the cuff and at some distance from the side seam line. For thin materials, 2 - 3 mm will be sufficient, for thick ones - 3 - 4. Such a deviation will allow the allowances to “fit comfortably and correctly” inside the finished cuff. At the ends of the stitching, we perform bartacks.

We trim the seam allowances (on both sides) to 0.5 cm, and cut out a triangle in the corner.

sew the edge of the stitched cuff

and iron the fold along the bottom of the cuff.

On the wrong side, the folded edge of the cuff can be sewn by hand using a blind stitch.

All “folds” of the cuff can also be secured with a stitch along the edge along the cuff stitching line.

The cuff can also be stitched along the entire contour:

  • stitch to the edge;
  • stitching to the edge and finishing at some distance from the stitching to the edge (according to the model).

Well, the cuff is ready, what to do with its ends?

On the finished product, the ends of the cuffs can be held end to end with air loop fasteners.

Using stitched straps and metal half rings (rings).

Using all kinds of knitted and woven, metal and plastic: buckles, straps, buttons, decorations, etc. specially designed for butt fasteners.

Stitched cuff “broken ring” with the ends of the cuffs overlapping each other.

The technology for making such cuffs is almost identical to the previous one described above in the article.

“Broken ring” cuffs with ends overlapping each other are also made at the bottom of the trousers only after all sewing manipulations with the width of the trouser leg have been completed there (or not, according to the model) (see above in the article).

The blank for making a “broken ring” cuff with ends overlapping each other is also a rectangle with seam allowances around the entire perimeter.

The length of this part is the same as the length of the prepared bottom of the trouser leg. But unlike a cuff with butt ends, this cuff requires an allowance for the clasp. Their length is determined by the model (depending on the type of fastener). For example, if the fastener on the cuff is in the form of interconnected ends, then the allowances for the fastener on the cuff can be measured not even in centimeters, but in tens of centimeters.

The standard width of the allowance for a cuff fastener, the ends of which will overlap each other (always from the front to the back) is 2 cm.

We reinforce the outer side of the cuff (the one that will be on the face of the finished trousers) with an adhesive pad.

But unlike the technology described above, we leave a protrusion at the cut (side seam line), on the side of the front part, and make a short transverse seam at a distance of 2 cm plus (2 - 4 mm) from the side seam line. On the side of the back piece, only the seam allowance protrudes beyond the side seam line (as when making “broken ring” cuffs with ends meeting end to end).

If the end of the cuff, which will be on top of the other on the finished trousers, should have some other shape other than that described in this article, then it is at this stage that it is given the necessary shape (according to the model) using stitching lines.

Just like the cuff described above with the ends end-to-end, we sweep this one out and straighten it

and set it aside.

Hemming the edge of the cuff from the inside is not suitable for this cuff. After all, we need to “secure” the “protrusion” onto the clasp with stitches. Therefore, we sew the cuff along the contour with a stitch to the edge or two, to the edge and finishing.

And the stitching at the edge will securely fasten the sides of the cuff together

and its folded edge on the wrong side.

At the bottom of the trousers, the ends of the cuffs, a “broken ring” overlapping each other, are held in place with the help of various fasteners: buttons,

buttons,

pieces of Velcro contact tape (Velcro)

etc. and so on.

That's basically all for today! See you in the next article! Sincerely, Milla Sidelnikova!

If jeans or trousers are a little short at the waist and hips, although they fit perfectly, there are several ways to lengthen them - both for children's models and for adults.

It is not necessary to have the same fabric on hand - remnants of decorative braid, lace, and scraps of colored fabric will do. For plain dress pants, you will need trouser tape, which can be purchased at fabric stores. You can lengthen your sweatpants using knitted cuffs.

    Required measurements

    First, you will need to take a measurement called the “side seam length of the trousers.” It is removed as follows: from the waist down, the length of the product is measured. If you plan to wear trousers with high-heeled shoes, measurements are taken with shoes on. The length of the trousers after alteration depends on the wishes of the master or client. The maximum is considered to be:

    1. 1. For classic men's trousers, the length should be such that one fold forms in the front. It is needed so that the sock is not visible when walking. At the back, the bottom of the trousers should be between the top edge of the heel or sole and the middle of the heel.
    2. 2. For men's trousers of European models, which have been popular in recent years, the length should be no more than 1-2 cm shorter than the classic one.
    3. 3. For women's models, the maximum length of the classic options is up to the middle of the heel.
    4. 4. In children's products, the length is determined by the purpose and model. It is important that the child is comfortable. The optimal length for trousers is one that covers the ankle.

    There is an important rule in women's fashion: the wider the trousers, the longer they should be. Accordingly, narrow models should be shorter. This is how the female figure is visually perceived more harmoniously.

    It is necessary to measure the length of the product along the side seam and compare the value with the previously taken measurement. The difference will serve as the main calculation characteristic in the future. You will also need to measure the width of your pant legs. Be sure to take seam allowances into account. They will be:

    • along the bottom edge - 3 cm;
    • along the stitching line and side seam - 1.5 cm each.

    Exceptions are braid and lace: they do not need allowances along the bottom edge (for the hem).

    Required tools and materials

    Before you start, you need to prepare everything you need. In order to change the length of your trousers at home, you will need:

    • scissors, seam ripper or nail scissors (you can replace them with a stationery knife);
    • threads matching the color or matching the finishing stitch;
    • a sewing machine or a set of needles for hand sewing; for knitted and elastic trousers, it is advisable to use an overlock machine;
    • ruler and measuring tape;
    • chalk or soap;
    • scraps of fabric, trouser braid for men's trousers (if it is not in the model), lace or decorative braid for jeans (in models for girls and young women);
    • iron and ironing iron (a piece of gauze for ironing);
    • knitted fabric for sports trousers. Elastic fabric can be used as cuffs.

    Jeans are dyed - how to fix the dye at home?

    Classic pants

    Classic models - men's, women's or children's - are lengthened using similar techniques.

    The simplest method is when the depth of the hem allows you to add length without the use of other materials. If you need to lengthen the trousers by 1-2 cm, you can open the seam along the bottom edge, iron it, and mark a new hem line.

    In men's models, a lapel is often found. This also simplifies the task. Before lengthening, you must carefully - using a seam ripper, a knife or nail scissors - rip the bottom seam and the stitching seams of the trouser tape (if any). It protects the bottom of the product from abrasion. If there is no trouser tape, it is advisable to sew it on.

    The thickened edge of the braid should be at the bottom. For grinding you need:

    • mark a line on the wrong side of the fabric;
    • measure the width of the braid and place it above the hem line;
    • Sew a seam along the top edge to secure the trouser tape;
    • iron the lower parts of the trouser legs so that only the thickened roll is visible from under the hem;
    • Hem the trousers using a machine or with a blind seam by hand.

    CThe color of the trouser braid must exactly match the shade of the fabric.

    Algorithm for lengthening trousers:

    1. 1. Carefully open the hem seam. Remove the tape.
    2. 2. Using a sewing needle, remove any remaining thread.
    3. 3. Iron open seam lines.
    4. 4. Measure the width of the trouser legs (it will be different in the front and back).
    5. 5. Use scraps of fabric to create a pattern for the hem pieces. Mark the width (separately for the back and front halves) and length (for the inner hem 2.5-3 cm). Take seam allowances into account.
    6. 6. Cut out the details.
    7. 7. Stitch the side parts of the parts. Press the seams.
    8. 8. Sew the parts to the product using a basting stitch.
    9. 9. Machine stitch the intended seam. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can use a hand-stitched backstitch.
    10. 10. Iron the seam through an ironing iron (gauze).
    11. 11. Mark a line for sewing the trouser tape and stitch it.
    12. 12. Hem the trousers using a basting stitch or tailor's pins.
    13. 13. Iron the hem.
    14. 14. Along the top hem line, sew a machine stitch in increments of at least 2.5 mm or a hand-blind stitch.
    15. 15. Iron the hem.

    Important: on flared models, the hem is cut exactly according to the design of the trousers.

    If you have scraps of the same fabric from which the product is made, you can make an addition in the form of a lapel. It can be simple or double. To cut out a part, the height of the lapel is added to the hem size (from 3 to 5 cm in finished form on classic models).

    To lengthen using a lapel you need:

    • on both sides of the trouser legs, open the side seam by 1-2 cm;
    • Sew cuff details to the bottom edges of the trousers;
    • iron the seams;
    • fold the free edge of the parts inward and stitch to the trouser legs;
    • iron the cuffs and sew the side seams;
    • It is advisable to strengthen the details of the cuffs on the wrong side with an adhesive pad.

    Each operation must be accompanied by ironing, only in this case the result will be impeccable. All details are cut out along the grain thread! Exceptions are models cut on the bias.

    Jeans

    The basis is the same algorithm as in the classic version. But in jeans you will need to remove the finishing stitch along the bottom, and at the end of the work, carefully lay the same one or do it with thread to match the fabric. There is no need to sew on the trouser tape on the jeans.

    Women's models with decor in the form of embroidery and appliqué can be lengthened using cotton fabrics that match the color. You can also use lace or decorative braid to lengthen it. To do this, you do not need to rip the hem seam - the braid is adjusted so that its upper edge is hidden on the wrong side. But this can only be done in cases where the fabric is thin enough. The lace is stitched using a zig-zag stitch. If the denim is rough, the simplest option will not work - the jeans will look ugly when used.

    Children's denim trousers for girls can be lengthened using the same methods. In models for boys, this can be done using cuffs. It is not necessary to select fabrics by color. On children's trousers, you can make cuffs at the bottom of the trousers from a different fabric. It is recommended to cut out and sew a pocket or decorative patches on the knees from it. No more than three additions from finishing fabric are used, otherwise the model will be overloaded with decor.

    You can lengthen jeans for small children by sewing along the edge of the cuff from an old dad's shirt made of denim or thick cotton. Such parts are easy to adjust by tucking them. In models for girls, you can sew lace over the edge of the legs, after opening the hem. Openwork braid will hide traces of abrasions along the fold lines.

    Another way that you can use to lengthen children's trousers is to make inserts of finishing fabric in the form of horizontal stripes above the hemline, below the knee. 2-3 such details will look good. No additional decor is required. In models of summer jeans for girls, lace can be used as an insert. In this case, both sides of the braid are adjusted from the front side.

    The option of lengthening jeans using cuffs or cuffs is not suitable for short women. To change the length of men's jeans in this way, the reverse side of the additional parts must be reinforced with an adhesive pad. Cuffs with a checkered pattern can be used as finishing elements.

    Women's and children's denim trousers are lengthened with contrasting cuffs. You will need scraps of denim and brightly colored material (polka dots, flowers, geometric designs). Sequence of work:

    1. 1. Cut out 2 pieces each with a width equal to the length of the extension with the addition of the lapel height (seam allowances) - from denim and finishing fabric.
    2. 2. Open the hem seam and iron.
    3. 3. Place the denim pieces right sides together and stitch them together.
    4. 4. Place contrasting pieces face to face and sew seams.
    5. 5. Fold the cuffs to the desired height, sew on the edges of the contrasting parts and sew them on the wrong side.

    Sweatpants

    Sports products are made from knitted and elastic materials. The best option for lengthening such models would be to sew a knitted cuff into an elastic band. To cut out these parts, you will need to measure the volume of the ankle joint to make putting on such pants easy. It is necessary to calculate the tensile coefficient of the fabric used for elongation. For this:

    1. 1. Mark on it the beginning and end of a segment 10 cm long.
    2. 2. Stretch the fabric and measure the distance between the marks. Example: it turned out to be 13.
    3. 3. Divide this number by 10 (the original value). 13:10 = 1.3. This is the elongation coefficient.

    It is needed so that the cut parts ensure a good fit in the finished product. Cuffs must be cut taking into account the coefficient. If the volume of the ankle joint is 30 cm, then the width of the cuff will be calculated as follows:

    1. 1.30: 1.3 = 23 (cm).
    2. 2. 23 cm + 1 cm (seam allowance) = 24 cm.

    The height of the part is equal to the height of the cuff multiplied by 2, plus a seam allowance of 1.6 cm. You need to cut out two of these parts.

    Sequence of work:

    1. 1. Sew the side seam of the cuff, retreating 0.5 from the edges.
    2. 2. Fold the cuff in half with the seam facing inward.
    3. 3. Attach the cut of the cuff to the prepared bottom edge of the trouser leg, aligning their inner seams.
    4. 4. Sew the piece to the trouser leg using a basting stitch, stretching it as you work.
    5. 5. Check the uniformity of the resulting assembly and sew the part using an overlocker, retreating 0.8 cm from the edge. The overlock seam is quite elastic. If you don’t have an overcasting machine, you can sew the cuffs with a zig-zag stitch, first loosening the tension of the upper thread.

    This option is suitable if you need to lengthen your sweatpants by 5-6 cm. It should be taken into account that with this method, the gathered parts will slightly raise the edge of the legs. When calculating the height of the cuffs, add 1 cm.

    You can lengthen your sweatpants with contrasting panels below the knee or at the bottom). At the same time, it is important that the finishing fabric is combined with the main one not only in color, but also in quality. To lengthen elastic trousers, you will need a material with the same stretchability, and the seams should be made using an overlocker.

    Conclusion

    Lengthening trousers at home is a creative activity. Modern fashion offers many options, and any of them can be safely adopted. Which method is suitable in each specific case will be determined by the material and model of the product, as well as the experience and imagination of the craftsman.

    Homemade alterations for children's clothing are especially relevant: your favorite trousers will “grow” a little with your child.

Has your child grown a little and his trousers are becoming too short for him? Or did you wash your pants and they shrunk? Don’t rush to throw away your trousers, try lengthening them, and we’ll tell you how to do it.

Lengthen using allowances

First of all, you need to look at how short the legs are. To do this, wash the item and iron it. Now put it on and look at the bottom. If you notice that the hem line contains a decent amount of fabric, you're in luck. Simply open the stitching and select all the threads. Smooth the fold with an iron. Fold the fabric 5 mm and stitch.

If the trousers are sewn economically and there is no extra fabric in the fold, you will need to lengthen the legs with an additional piece of fabric. It could be a braid or a frill. Jeans lengthened with exactly the same fabric will look ideal. Cut a strip of fabric to the required length. Don't forget about allowances. An additional 1 cm of canvas is enough. Sew the two edges together and stitch the resulting strip to the bottom of the legs. Carefully press the seam line.

Extend with lace

If you need to lengthen the legs of women's summer trousers, this can be done with lace. Nowadays it is very fashionable to decorate summer clothes with thin and translucent fabrics. There are two methods for lengthening trousers. You can simply sew a strip of lace at the bottom of the trouser leg. But this option is pretty boring. In addition, the lace is thin, so the bottom of the pants quickly frays. It is best to make horizontal translucent inserts at the same distance. It is not necessary to do this symmetrically on both legs. You can make inserts diagonally.

Sew on the cuffs

It is very easy to rehabilitate children's jeans using the cuff from an old shirt. It is best to take a shirt made of thick fabric. You just need to cut the cuff and reduce it so that the length and width matches the trousers. Sew the cuff to the bottom of the product and iron it. Now cut out a shape from the shirt and sew it on the top of the jeans. So, the applique and the cuff will match.

If you need to lengthen trousers for a girl, you can make flounces. To do this, select a suitable fabric and cut a semicircle from it. Sew the piece to the trouser leg and roll it up. You will end up with a very interesting region. You can do it differently. Cut a strip of fabric 2-3 times wider than the pant leg. Use a needle to gather the strip into a frill. Make even folds and sew the resulting frill to the legs. Gather the bottom with a thin ribbon and sew on a bow. This will give you a straight cuff with pleats.

What to do if the fabric is different from the trousers

If you don't have a suitable piece of fabric that looks like pants, don't fret. Take any fabric that matches the density of your pants. Sew the cuffs to the legs. To make the insert match the trousers, you need to make an applique from the same fabric. You can simply sew on a patch pocket.

Extension with a belt

You need to rip off the existing waistband and sew on a new, wider strip of fabric. By increasing the waistband, you can lengthen your trousers. If this does not save the situation, you can use the fabric cut from the waistband to sew to the bottom of the legs.

If you are not comfortable with a sewing machine, contact a workshop. The workshop workers will be able to choose the necessary fabric to lengthen the trousers and make the item unique.

It often happens that when buying jeans, they fit perfectly in the hips and waist, but are not suitable in length. Or the child has grown up rapidly and his jeans have become too short. The situation can be easily corrected with your own hands. In this article, you will receive detailed instructions on how to lengthen jeans at home.

Universal ways to lengthen jeans

Regardless of which method of lengthening your jeans you choose, you will need:

  • a set of hand needles and a sewing machine;
  • threads depending on the color of the jeans;
  • snipper (tool for cutting threads);
  • scissors;
  • soap or chalk;
  • ruler;
  • braid to hem the bottom of jeans;
  • lace as decoration (optional).

Stock up on everything you need right away, so it will be faster and more convenient for you to work.

Let's move on to the process.

This option is suitable for old jeans that you love with all your heart and don’t want to part with them. The bottom of the trousers has already lost its former attractiveness, but this is not a reason to throw them in the trash.

  1. Open the hem seam at the bottom of the leg, fold the cut to the minimum allowable length, add a lace motif for children's or women's models, or sew a cuff from any other material that will match jeans or trousers;
  2. Release the seam at the bottom of the trouser leg and hem it onto the trouser braid, in this case it is necessary to lay a finishing stitch on top, match the threads to match;
  3. Cut off part of the trouser leg and make a lace insert; this option is more suitable for women and children.

It happens that jeans shrink during washing. Then you can use the following method:

  1. To begin, cut out the finishing stitch at the bottom of the jeans and remove any threads that will stick out.
  2. It is advisable to process the cut. Use an overlock stitch on a sewing machine for this.

If you are lengthening tapered jeans, then apply lace to the overlock seam and sew a fixing stitch in a circle. Of course, this option is suitable for altering female models. If you can find a beautiful ribbon made from a high-quality base, then the altered jeans will look very stylish. In the same way, you can remake things for little girls who have outgrown their favorite trousers.

  1. Arm yourself with nail scissors, a snipper or a stationery knife. Using either of these tools, you will need to carefully cut out the finishing stitching along the bottom of the pant leg.
  2. Next, we unfold the bend and iron the folds with a steam iron.
  3. Then you should measure how much you want to increase the length of the product and draw an even line with chalk. This marking will indicate where the new edge of the extended leg will be.
  4. Next, you need to decide how you will process the bottom. For example, when using trouser tape there is no need to process the cuts with an overlocker. At the cut on top of the fabric, attach the selected braid with the piping to the pant leg. The gap from the edge of the trouser leg to the tape should be about half a centimeter; sew a line.
  5. The final stage of the work will be to turn the tape inside out and perform a finishing stitch along the bottom of the trouser leg.

How to lengthen men's jeans

For alterations of men's jeans and boys' trousers, lengthening with cuffs is suitable. The cuff can be prepared from a material similar to the jeans being altered or, conversely, in contrast to the jeans. It can be a bright contrasting fabric, a floral motif, a child's drawing or a checkered pattern - do not limit your imagination.

  1. We measure the circumference of the trouser leg at the bottom and add 2 centimeters to the resulting length on the side seams;
  2. Next, decide on the width of the cuff. Cut out the same piece from non-woven fabric.
  3. Attach the cuff to the wrong side of the trouser leg.
  4. Next along the cuff you need to sew an edging stitch.
  5. The second cut of the cuff needs to be ironed by 0.5 mm or 1 cm so that the edge of the cuff on the front side is smooth and neat.
  6. Then you should place the cuff on the front side of the trouser leg and sew a stitch.
  7. Finally, heat treatment is necessary, and your favorite jeans are ready to delight you again.

How to lengthen women's jeans

The use of lace is suitable for lengthening jeans for a girl or woman. It can be used for models worn in spring and summer.

When choosing lace, pay attention to the symmetry of the edges and the density of the material of your trousers.

Don't buy knitted lace. The width of the lace should be equal to the elongation. You choose the place where the lace is inserted; it can be at the bottom of the trouser leg, on the knee or under the knee.

We cut the pant leg in the place where we plan to sew on the lace. We slightly undercut one of the side seams of the trouser leg (preferably the inner one) by 3-4 centimeters. We process the edges of the trouser leg and the cut piece with a large zigzag on a sewing machine.

  • Method 1: Fold the edge of the trouser leg 5 mm inside out, iron it or baste it by hand, whichever is more convenient for you. We add lace on top, but the fabric cannot be stretched, otherwise the lace will fall into folds. The result is very neat, but be prepared for the seam to be thick;
  • Method 2: In this option, the edge does not need to be tucked, so the seam will be thin and more neat. Step back half a centimeter from the zigzag edge and stitch the lace with a zigzag. Keep in mind that depending on the lace you choose, the zigzag seam may show through the lace. Consider this nuance when choosing a lace ribbon.

Depending on the method you choose, sew the bottom of the lace. Don't stretch the denim. Re-seam the side seams of the trousers. For added security, zigzag the side seam.

These are not all the ways to lengthen pants legs. By using your imagination, you can restore your favorite item that has fallen into disrepair or buy new pants that you love if they are too short for you. Young mothers should also master the simple operations described. Children grow so quickly that sometimes recently purchased items become too small.

If your child's pants fit at the waist and hips and are short in length, do not rush to buy a new item. Old pants can serve you well if you use these tips. In addition, in order to lengthen children's jeans, you do not need to have any special skills. Having a sewing machine at home and the desire to save a little, you can create a unique item for your child.

And in conclusion, one more piece of advice: if you are not entirely sure of the correctness of your actions, go through the entire process mentally, without resorting to drastic actions. When you are sure that you have thought through everything down to the smallest detail, start remodeling!

How to lengthen clothes: some interesting ideas for inspiration

How to lengthen pants

It may be that there is no material left for a new hem. This means that you will have to sew on a braid or look for a suitable fabric and cut strips from it equal to the length of the hem plus seam allowances. Take these strips (it is better to cut them crosswise) and stitch them to the bottom of the legs. They should be on the wrong side of the trousers. Hem and press.

If it turns out that the place of the previous hem is very frayed and its line is very noticeable, try applying thin ribbons to this line and carefully stitching them along the edges. You will end up with something like a decorative decoration along the bottom of your trousers.

In the case when there is nothing to hem, you can get creative by adding other elements to the bottom of the trousers.

Sew a flounce at the bottom. To do this, you should cut out a flounce whose inner circle is equal to the circumference of the trouser leg.

Sew a gather to the bottom. Measure the circumference of the pant leg, multiply the resulting length by two (or more) and cut out such a strip of fabric. The length of the strip depends on how thick the gather or counter pleats are.

Add cuffs to your trousers. It can be made from fur or knitted elastic.

Sew a ruffle from lace or other, possibly contrasting, fabric. Gather a strip of lace onto a thread, pull it to the width you need and stitch it. It would be nice if you could also make a belt or decorative pockets from this fabric.

Try making two inserts: place one, for example, below the knees, and the other at the bottom of the trousers. The fabric for the inserts can be anything, even lace, but in this case you will have to place a denser material underneath it so that it does not deform.

Make the edge of the trousers fringed by pulling out several rows of threads from the fabric. To prevent your homemade fringe from continuing to unravel, secure it with a straight stitch. When securing the edge, you can sew a thin strip of lace to it instead of a regular stitch.

Insert a strip of another fabric along the bottom of the trousers using a detachable zipper. Instead of a zipper, you can also sew on Velcro.

Try tearing off the old belt and sewing a new one wider, inserting two or three rows of elastic bands; You can also lengthen the top of the trousers with some interesting insert. But to do this, you will most likely have to completely rip the trousers and redo their pattern a little.

Sometimes it happens that good pants become short for fast-growing teenagers or shrink after washing. In this case, you should not rush to throw them away and buy new ones, since they can be lengthened a little.

In order to lengthen them, you should acquire patience and the necessary materials. Also, it is quite important to have at least basic skills and understanding of the work so that the final product looks beautiful and neat.

The standard lengthening measurement is from the waist down the leg to the hem of the trousers. It is also important to consider that the correct length must be selected for the shoes with which the trousers will be worn in the future.

Important! You should consider standard trouser length standards before starting work.

Pants length standards:

  • European men's trouser models should be 1–2 centimeters shorter than classic ones.
  • The optimal length of women's trousers is to the middle of the heel of the shoe.
  • Classic ones should be worn so that when standing straight, there is one fold on the toe. Then the toe of the shoe will not be visible when moving.
  • Children's products should be comfortable for the child. However, the optimal length is ankle length.

In general, lengthening the length now will not be particularly difficult, since many manufacturers leave a sufficient amount of material during the processing of seams.

Lengthening trousers at home

In order to lengthen your pants at home, it is not necessary to have the same material . Others will work well too fabrics, For example: colored patches, lace or tape for trousers, and knitted cuffs for sweatpants.

Other materials you may need:

  • sewing machine;
  • threads;
  • needle;
  • scissors;
  • piece of fabric.

Reference! In order to increase the length of your trousers, it is best to iron them before starting work. This reduces the possibility of wrinkles and, accordingly, facilitates correct measurements.

Another important point in preparing for work is measuring the width of the trouser leg and calculating the material for hemming with allowance for seams and overlock. You need to leave at least 1.5 centimeters on the sides, and at least 3 centimeters on the bottom.

How to lengthen classic trousers (men's, women's) when there is no stock

Sometimes it happens that excellent dress pants fit perfectly on the hips and waist, but they have become short and there is no reserve of fabric that can be used at the bottom of the leg. In this case, you can use trouser braid or a piece of the same fabric. Below we will look in more detail at exactly how to use these 2 features.

Women's and men's dress pants are lengthened using similar techniques. Therefore, these methods are suitable for both options.

With braid

The braid should be selected in such a way that it matches the color. To begin work, be sure to open the seams of the fabric hem and remove the threads. Then be sure to steam and smooth the fold seams well.

Important! It should be remembered that the width of the trouser leg in the front and back will be different.

In order to cut out the fabric on the part, you need to separately measure the width of both parts of the leg and the required length of the material. Be sure to take into account that there should be at least 3 centimeters left on the inside hem, and also add seam allowances. Then sew the cut pieces together and carefully press the seams. After this, baste the extensions to the trouser leg and try it on to make sure it is of sufficient length.
