Medium length curl. Chemistry for medium hair with reviews and photos

A lady is a very variable nature. Now she dreams of long, straight, flowing strands, and tomorrow she instantly wants to curl her locks and enjoy her chic curls.

Long-haired beauties are thrilled with the thought of quickly getting rid of the weight of their hair, while short-haired ones, on the contrary, dream of letting their braids go down to their waist. One thing is funny - the modern beauty industry can make any desire come true in a few hours.

You will have lovely curls for a long time after perm

And if you dream of playful and bouncy curls, then light chemical treatment for medium hair will be one of the most effective methods of making your dream come true.

Features of perm

The procedure for transforming strands of hair was invented back in 1906, when hairdresser Karl Nessler tested a new method on his wife’s hairstyle.

This kind of procedure is quite harmful, but with all this, the result is simply cool. That is why so many ladies and women want to do chemical treatment for medium hair, and for any other length.

After the invention of perms, ladies increasingly began to experiment with their own hairstyles.

To this day, perm is constantly being improved. In Russian times, almost all ladies were identical with curly lambs - it looked, frankly, unnatural. But this is not so terrible compared to the stress the hair had to endure.

The photo, naturally, is exaggerated, but the perm in Russian times looked something like this

In modern beauty salons, everything is done using a more gentle method. Therefore, girls who cannot wear their voluminous hairstyle can safely resort to this method, because in addition to the desired volume, you will make your image soft and feminine. In addition, you will hide imperfections in your face shape and radically change your own style.

The cost of a function in beauty salons can be different, everything depends on its prestige, the length of the strands, and the skill of the hairdresser.

The result of the procedure is now more gentle and high quality

Positive and negative features of the procedure

Feedback from women after chemotherapy is varied. Many people say that after such a procedure it is very difficult to get your hair back - the strands lose their shine, elasticity and overall health. There is some truth in this, but the same consequences can appear after the obvious frequent use of a hairdryer.

Curls on medium-length strands look great

The condition of the strands almost entirely depends on the environment and habits. If the hairstyle is done correctly on a technical level, and care for the curls is systematic and competent, then everything will be fine. But still, let’s try to understand the pros and cons of this procedure.

Advantages of curling:

  • Durability of the effect.
  • Hairstyle is always in fashion.
  • Assigns the missing volume and splendor.
  • Do-it-yourself installation does not require time and effort.

Disadvantages of curling:

Be prepared for the fact that your hair may noticeably deteriorate after the procedure.

  • The structure of the hair can deteriorate; damage is especially noticeable if the curls are not properly cared for.
  • Chemicals look best on medium-length hair and on long strands. On small ones, the effectiveness disappears.
  • If the strands are very long and languid, the effect quickly disappears.
  • Has contraindications. The function cannot be performed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Perm process

To make chemistry, you will need the following tools:

Bobbins for winding strands

  • 50-80 bobbins or curlers (depending on hair length).
  • Protective fabric or film for skin and clothing.
  • A special product for curling.
  • Sponge for applying the composition.
  • Latch.
  • The comb does not have metal teeth.
  • Container for the composition (not made of metal).

Implementation summary:

  1. Wash your hair without using masks or balms. Dry a little with a towel.
  2. Divide all your hair into sections according to the vertical parting.
  3. Select one strand, comb it well and wrap it around a bobbin or curler. Try to curl the curl tightly so that the curl does not fall apart.
  4. Work this way through your entire hairstyle.
  5. Measure out the required amount of the chemical composition and use your lip to blot each bobbin with it.

Curling hair with bobbins is the longest and most painful step of perm

Fundamentally! Start applying the composition from the back of the head and end with the parietal part.

  1. Wrap your head in protective film and wrap everything with a towel.
  2. Keep the composition on your head depending on the desired result. 10 minutes will be enough to get natural curls, half an hour will be useful to get elastic curls.
  3. Rinse the product off the bobbins without removing them. Blot excess water with a towel.
  4. Apply fixative.

In the process of washing off the chemical composition

  1. Maintain the fixative for 10 minutes. Rinse with plenty of water and rinse with diluted vinegar.

Aspects of the procedure

Perm, regardless of its type (vertical, root, spiral, wet, etc.) has a number of subtleties:

  1. Carefully select the composition of the product - it depends on them in what condition the hairstyle will be in the future. It is very important to test the product on a narrow strand before the procedure. If after application it breaks and becomes very weak, then dilute the liquid with water and test again.

The result of the curling procedure

  1. Be sure to test for an allergic reaction. To do this, apply a small amount of product behind the ear and leave it on for approximately as long as the procedure itself lasts. If redness, itching, or irritation appear, perming should not be done under any circumstances.
  2. Do not blow-dry your hair immediately after the procedure.
  3. In this case, if you want to make the curls larger at their base, then apply the product more carefully and more specifically in the root area and distribute it moderately.
  4. Be sure to apply cream or oil along the hair growth line to avoid traces of the product on the skin.
  5. Beware of strong products and overexposing them to the strands - this can damage them and the curls will not hold their shape.

How to get your hair back after curling

Any chemical influence is stressful for the strands, so it is important to follow the usual rules for their speedy recovery:

  • Do not wash your hair more than 3 times a week - this will wash away the layer of oil protection. After a perm, it is already weakened, and more frequent washing will lead to dryness, brittleness and dandruff. Try to choose a mild shampoo, you can use a baby shampoo. Wash your hair with warm water, doing a light massage of the skin - it provokes the growth of new hair.
  • It's better to cut the ends right away- this way the strands will begin to grow faster and become less tangled.
  • Apply various moisturizing and restorative masks and balms, which will soften the strands, restoring them health and strength.
  • Start taking vitamin complexes internally.

Masks with eggs perfectly restore curls

Also, you shouldn’t use folk methods that will help your hairstyle regain its former strength. So, rubbing pepper tincture into the skin will stimulate hair growth and also nourish the skin. A natural mask with yolk, onion juice and burdock oil will strengthen your hair - just apply the mixture to the strands, and rinse off after half an hour.

An effective restorative mask is considered to be an egg mask. Mix three eggs and three tablespoons of burdock oil. Apply the mixture to the strands, insulate with film, and after half an hour, rinse everything off.

Results

Charming curls add a special charm to your appearance

A perm on medium strands looks amazing, even without styling you will look perfect. But there is also a second side to the coin - you can noticeably spoil your hairstyle.

So whether you should resort to such a procedure is up to you to decide. The video in this article will portray this topic in a pleasant way.

Since childhood, for every holiday, mothers have curled girls’ locks, decorating their look. Therefore, women associate curls with fun and a festive mood. When you want to add variety to your life, change your image or improve your appearance, hair perm comes to the rescue. The variety of types of procedures expands the boundaries of choice, which we will look at today.

Hair perm - what is it?

For the purpose of transformation, women resort to various types of procedures, one of the most popular and also affordable is hair perm. The procedure fundamentally changes the structure of straight strands, transforming them into playful curls.

Wanting to please every client, cosmetic companies have created types of curls, which determine the thickness of the curls, the degree of curl and the duration of the effect. On average, the hairstyle retains its appearance for up to 6 months; during this period, the hair does not require the use of curling irons, curlers or other devices.

“Chemistry” came into fashion in the 20th century, when hairdressers used products that were merciless for the health of curls, but at the same time provided lasting results. Women went for the procedure, sacrificing the beauty of their hair. Today the situation has changed; curling mixtures do not damage the hair structure. Some manufacturers have created substances that, on the contrary, guarantee an improvement in the appearance of hair.

Ammonia and alkaline compounds are excluded from the composition of chemical agents. The effectiveness of the procedure is ensured by acids and other safe components, which are selected by the hairdresser based on the condition of the curls and wishes regarding the type of curls.

The active component, penetrating deep into the hair shaft, helps to weaken intercellular connections and destroy protein compounds. After this, the strand is ready to form curls. For this purpose, various devices are used that fix the hair in the desired condition. Once the form is removed, the curls acquire a long-lasting curly appearance.

Only a professional hairdresser who has experience working with chemical compositions for curling can ensure the effectiveness of the technique without damage. The specialist will help you assess the condition and type of hair, because not every woman is suitable for this procedure. An error in selecting the composition or algorithm for a curling session can result in a loss of attractive appearance and damage to the strands.

An experienced hairdresser will perform the procedure in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. He will adjust the duration of action of the preparations so as not to overexpose and burn the hair, but at the same time to ensure tight curls that will retain their shape for a long time. Immediately after dyeing or lightening, it is prohibited to perform the procedure, this is due to the presence of a chemical reaction that negatively affects the health and color of the curls.

To understand what is right for you, you need to familiarize yourself with the types of procedures that are offered on the cosmetic services market. And after that, consult with a professional and make a final decision.

Cosmetic companies do not stop there and annually release new technologies to design hairstyles, as well as meet the demands of women.

The technique is also used on medium-length hair. After treatment, curls look voluminous and attractive. To highlight the strands and make the look relaxed, women with vertical curls use products to create the effect of wet hair. It looks very aesthetically pleasing.

When using this type of procedure, the master holds the bobbins vertically, and the curl is wound onto the device in a spiral motion. For convenience, hairdressers prefer cone-shaped bobbins, inside of which there is a hole for distributing the strands. After inserting the curl into the bobbin, the hair takes on the required shape and is fixed. The devices are made of wood or plastic to choose from.

The composition for spiral chemistry is selected individually, based on the condition of the hair, the duration of the effect, and the wishes of the client. Curls that are permed by a professional using the right product are playful and dynamic.

Japanese hair curl

How many times have you heard that chemicals ruin hair, and that it cannot be used on depleted strands, today this is a thing of the past. According to Japanese hair curling technology, it is possible to change the structure of damaged curls, and sometimes it is even beneficial.

The composition, saturated with lipids and proteins, penetrates inside and heals the hair shaft. Neutral acidity level, keratin and betaine help eliminate dryness, brittleness, provide moisture and softness.

The Japanese technique guarantees the preservation of elastic, voluminous curls for up to six months. Suitable for hair of any length, density and thickness.

American perm

Women, watching Hollywood film stars, admire luxurious curls with voluminous curls that look lively and relaxed. A similar hairstyle is obtained using curlers from Olivia Garden. These devices do not leave creases.

American perm is performed using an available or suitable composition; a prerequisite is special curlers. After the procedure, large, natural curls with curls in different directions are formed on the head.

Carving curl

Thick hair of medium or short length can also be curled. For this purpose, hairdressers use the technique. It is performed using gentle compounds that do not harm the hair shaft, but only superficially change the structure. This allows you to increase the volume at the roots and refresh the appearance.

To carry out the procedure, the hairdresser selects curlers based on the type of appearance, face shape, and hair condition. Large bobbins will help add mystery and elegance, small bobbins will add playfulness, and spirals will add sophistication.

Gentle perm

Today, the “Gentle Perm” service appears in the price lists of beauty salons, which is carried out using products that do not harm the health of the hair. Safe chemistry gently affects the structure of curls, guaranteeing effectiveness and naturalness.

There are:

  • Amino acid. A therapeutic procedure containing amino acids and proteins, it nourishes the hair cuticle, restores damage, creating curls. Not suitable for long or thick hair. A soft action does not give a lasting result; the curls unwind under the weight of the hair.
  • Neutral. Gentle chemicals without harmful components in the composition, it is considered universal, suitable for any hair type. Helps create long-lasting curls for coarse or thick hair. The result lasts up to 6 months.
  • Acidic. The procedure using a composition where the active ingredient is thioglycolic acid guarantees 100% results for a period of 1 month. Curling is considered gentle, but is not suitable for thin, weakened strands.

Chemistry for long hair

Long hair is valued and considered a woman's adornment. Therefore, every girl strives to let her hair grow. Curls created by nature or a skilled hairdresser and a chemical composition help add luxury to your hairstyle.

The procedure will require skill, a kit for the session and an active mixture. Professionals who conduct sessions daily recommend first trying to wind bobbins or curlers without a mixture a couple of times for training purposes. This will help you not get confused and carry out the procedure clearly and smoothly. It is difficult to process hair from the back of the head on your own, so get the support of a friend, sister or mother.

Hair perm kit

Every woman who has been interested in the topic in one way or another knows about perm products. But only a few people know about additional little things at hand that will make things easier. The session kit includes:

  • curlers or bobbins selected according to the type of curl, made of wood;
  • the studs are large;
  • plastic clips to hold the strands on the hairpin;
  • plastic comb-comb with sparse teeth and a sharp tip;
  • plastic cap;
  • latex gloves;
  • protective cape;
  • glass container;
  • two foam sponges;
  • terry towel;
  • cotton strands.

Bobbins for chemistry

The composition of the active ingredient and the curlers or bobbins directly affect the outcome of the curl. Bobbins for chemistry are the basis of future curls, so the choice of this device is taken seriously.

When buying bobbins, do not skimp, choose durable wooden ones. Low-grade material often reacts with chemical mixtures and spoils the result.

Size also plays an important role, pay attention to medium or, if necessary, small curlers. However, check their effect so as not to get an “explosion” effect on your head. Spiral chemistry with classic large curls for long hair will require up to 40 pieces of bobbins, for medium curls up to 35 pieces, and for short curls 20-30 pieces will be enough. The calculation is based on the average density, but if your mop is voluminous, then increase the number of curlers.

Perm composition

Hair is selected even more carefully than curlers, because they play a major role in the initial state of the curls. Manufacturers give the following recommendations:

  • Damaged, dry, brittle strands are treated with neutral compounds. Bottles of safe mixtures are marked “BIO”; they do not contain harmful components. Helps curls stay on hair for up to 3 months.
  • For coarse, straight hair that is difficult to form curls, chemicals based on an acidic environment are used. It helps to achieve lasting results.
  • If you have a problem with sensitive scalp or thin hair, use alkaline chemicals. Remember that this is a gentle composition that does not give a long-lasting effect; curls last up to 3 months.
  • Allantoin chemistry has a neutral environment and is used on all hair types.
  • Amino acid agents for chemically changing the structure of strands serve as a restorative cocktail for damaged hair. Suitable for dry, lifeless curls. Does not work on dense, coarse hair.
  • Japanese solutions with proteins and lipids in their composition also guarantee health improvement due to the vitamin complex. Used on thin, porous curls. Harmless.

If you are lost among the variety of products for creating curls, then use the list of popular brands that produce curling solutions:

  • Estel Professional (Russia);
  • Lebel (Japan);
  • Olivia Garden (America);
  • GOLDWELL (Germany);
  • Schwarzkopf (Germany);
  • Matrix Opti Wave (America) and others.

Perm at home

Manufacturers, to ensure safety and obtain 100% results, recommend adhering to the following algorithm of actions when performing a perm at home:

  1. A day before the procedure, do a test for an allergic reaction. To do this, try the composition on strands in the occipital region, as well as on a section of the head in the same area. If there is no reaction within 24 hours, proceed to action.
  2. To ensure the safety of your curls and improve performance, treat your hair with a special protective solution. It will ensure uniform distribution of the active composition throughout the hair.
  3. From the back of the head, apply the selected product to the strands and fix it with curlers. The procedure is carried out without any hitches, at an accelerated pace.
  4. We protect the head with a cap on top and insulate it. Leave the solution on your hair for up to 40 minutes. The time is selected individually based on the condition of the hair. If you are performing the procedure for the first time, shorten the session by 5-10 minutes so as not to damage the structure of the curls.
  5. Without removing the curlers, the strands are treated with a neutralizer, which stops the effect of the chemicals. Let stand for another 30-40 minutes.
  6. After the time has passed, untwist one curl and check the result. If the curl meets the requirements, then the composition is ready to be washed off. Removal of the product is carried out under running water, directly through curlers for 5-10 minutes.
  7. After water procedures, a fixing composition is applied to the curled strands, wait up to 10 minutes. After this, remove the curlers and record the final result again.
  8. Finally, rinse your hair with an aqueous solution of vinegar (1 tablespoon of vinegar per 1 liter of boiled water), and nourish with a restorative mask.

After the curl-drying procedure, professionals recommend resorting to natural drying without combing, this will help reduce the negative impact of the procedure.

Hair restoration after perm

Manipulations with changes in the structure of the strands, no matter how safe they may seem, affect the condition of the hair. A natural question arises to maintain the beauty and health of curls.

  • use purchased nutritional and restorative products;
  • use natural, oil-based homemade masks;
  • comb your hair less often;
  • replace the massage comb with a wide-toothed comb;
  • wash your hair with mild, sulfate-free shampoos;
  • do not wrap your hair in a towel, just use it to remove excess moisture;
  • Trim the ends periodically to get a neat cut.

Video on how to apply chemicals to hair

Perm significantly changes the structure of curls, so this step is approached thoroughly. To understand what this procedure is, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the information from the video tutorial.

No matter how sophisticated a girl is, fragility in her hair structure is persona non grata for her. And all because a mop of curls not only looks noble, innocent and romantic, but also broadcasts to the world about the health and beauty of its owner. As for the length, a haircut that ends at the shoulders is an excellent option for strands that are not spoiled by special attention from their owner. Perm with large curls on medium hair will help to add femininity, the photo of which states: artificial small curls “a la lamb” have sunk into oblivion! Now the noble bends of the strands are difficult to identify as unnatural.
Those who have decided to have curls should understand that this cannot be done without preparation and additional hair care. Any interference with natural features has consequences. What is it about?

Even a professionally performed perm with large curls on medium hair, as the photo clearly demonstrates, requires daily care. After all, the shine and smoothness of curls is a consequence of care, and not a concomitant effect of their formation.

Large curls are not a ready-made hairstyle, but an excellent base for creating everyday looks. To be prepared for transformation, and subsequently to maintain the effect obtained in the salon, you should know the following:

1. It is important to decide on the length of the strands even before perming: large curls will remove about 2-6 cm.
2. Oversized curls do not tolerate sparse hair: the shape will hold, but the treacherously translucent bald spot will not allow you to enjoy the resulting effect.
3. You shouldn’t expect mega volume after a major perm: this is the prerogative of small curls.
4. You won’t be able to be bright and catch the eyes of passersby on you due to the rich color of your curls and curls formed in the salon: it’s either one or the other! The chemical composition significantly affects the artificially created tone.
5. It also affects how long you can flaunt your new look: the less traumatic the product is for your hair, the shorter the effect will be.
6. The result can also be affected by the internal state: psycho-emotional, hormonal factors will also play a role here.
7. You won’t be able to get a perm and forget about your hair for a long time: as it grows, correction will be needed. On average, you will have to visit a hairdresser once every six months.
8. If your hair type is not oily, then perming can result in dry, dull and brittle curls. This will require additional care in the form of moisturizers and treatments.
9. Perm with large curls on medium hair looks very natural, but you still have to work hard on this effect: special styling products for curls will help to avoid the resemblance to a dandelion and will give large curls smoothness and shine.

Before and after photos will help you evaluate how well-groomed a perm looks on medium hair.

The effect achieved in the salon can be extended at home: pepper tincture will stimulate the nutrition of the head, and the egg-burdock mixture will restore the strands themselves. Salon treatments, store-bought masks, balms, mild shampoos - this is what will prevent your hair from turning into something like a washcloth.

How to curl large curls on medium hair

Masters create a cute hairstyle strewn with large curls by going through the following stages.

Stage 1. Prepare your hair by washing it with a special deep cleansing shampoo.
Stage 2. Divide your head into zones and curl the still damp strands into large curlers.
Stage 3. Apply the composition to the fixed strands, which completely saturates them. The product destroys the connections between hair cells at the molecular level, causing its scales to open. In this state, you can form the strands in any way you like. How elastic the curl will be depends on the time of exposure to the chemicals, but no more than 24 minutes.
Stage 4. Rinse fixed hair thoroughly.
Stage 5. Apply the fixative separately to each twisted strand. Wait 5 minutes. Do the same on already loose hair. At this stage, the scales return to their original place, closing tightly. Correct implementation of the fixation procedure is the key to a lasting curl effect.
Stage 6. Rinse your hair well to completely remove the product.
Stage 7. When drying, use a diffuser attachment. No mousse, foam or anything else is used at this stage.

Upon completion of the procedure, the effect of the perm continues for another 36 hours. This is why hairdressers advise not to wash your hair during this period.
How different it is to curl large curls on medium hair, the photo will help you imagine the end result. Moreover, the effect depends both on the chosen chemical composition and on the method of twisting the strands.

Methods for creating medium-length hair curls in the format of large curls

Curls that slightly cover the shoulders leave enough room for experimentation. This length is enough to create volume using chemicals at the roots, and the usual method using a larger bobbin diameter, and vertically. Using different diameter curlers will give your look a more natural look. A shorter perm exposure time will allow you to create a light wave. And the average length will enable the resulting curls to maintain their given shape for a long time.

Carving

However, the duration is significantly influenced by the chosen perm product. The long-term styling effect is created by carving. Wrapped on special carver curlers - and to create large curls on their model with a large diameter - they will add volume to the strands at the roots or send a light wave along the entire length.

Oversized curls can also be created using boomerangs of the appropriate size. It is stated that the effect of such curling on the strands themselves and the scalp causes minimal harm. The resulting light wave will enhance its effect with specialized styling products or will fade away when exposed to a straightening iron.

Natural waves will not allow you to doubt their nature only if the strands are provided with proper care. Hairstyles with bangs with carving styling require special attention. It is important to choose the diameter of the carvers to match the straight front strands or to subject them to proper processing.

Biochemical perm for medium hair

Perm for medium hair, depending on the composition, is divided into acidic, alkaline and neutral. The names are arranged according to the effect on the hair structure. Accordingly, the stiffest curl is obtained using the first method and further reducing aggressiveness towards natural structures. What different perms for medium hair look like, photos will help you compare the results and decide which one is right for you.

Among the options listed above for creating large curls using chemistry, amino acid composition is included separately). Due to its ingredients, which exclude thioglycolic acid and ammonia, it is believed that it does not harm the health of the hair and can be used on any hair, including medium hair. Among the advantages of its use is the absence of a sharp contrast between regrown hair and curled hair. The illusion of thick hair will last up to six months. However, reviews from fans of curls indicate that dryness also accompanies this option of chemistry.

When cared for with carefully selected products, a large perm on medium hair, as the photo shows, will look brilliant. As an additional bonus, the use of an amino acid composition subsequently reduces styling time and the frequency of shampooing.

This perm for medium-length hair also has many composition options: silk proteins will give the strands smoothness, specially selected ingredients in the Japanese product are aimed at preserving moisture in the structure itself, which should prevent their fragility and dullness, and Niagara, in addition to amino acids, is supplemented with D-panthenol, which promotes restoration and growth of curls.

Thus, a large perm on medium hair will shape it into noble and natural curls, requiring in return proper care in the form of moisturizing and restorative masks, reducing physical impact and revising the line of styling products used. After all, as you know, you have to pay for everything. Isn't the price of a lush mop too high? It's up to you to decide.

There are at least a dozen types of perms, and choosing the most optimal one is not so easy. Modern types of hair perm are more gentle than those used in the last century and do not cause as much harm.

There are not many perm methods, so choosing the most optimal one for yourself is not so difficult. It all depends on what kind of curls you want to get - soft waves, vertical spirals, or simply increase the volume of your hairstyle by applying “chemistry” only to the hair roots.

What types of perm and hair curling methods there are, you will learn on this page and you will be able to choose the most appropriate one. You will also see photos of what types of perms there are, and get acquainted with their description.

Acid type of hair perm

Acid perm is by far the most popular and long-lasting hair perm technology. It stays on the hair for up to 6 months. The active component of the preparation for acid perm is glyceryl monothioglycolate. The pH level of this composition is lower than that of alkaline and ranges from 6.9 to 7.2 pH.

Although acid hair curling cannot be called absolutely harmless and safe, it has a significant advantage over other technologies. The curling preparation penetrates deep into the hair through the outer layer of scales, but does not open the scales themselves. In physics, this process is called osmosis. Acid perm is accompanied by exposure to high temperature, due to which strong curls are created.

Preparations for chemical acid perms, unlike alkaline ones, do not cause strong swelling of the hair, so the strands can be wrapped and secured with a certain tension. Without tension, the curls will turn out to be of different shapes and will be weak. As a result, the curl turns out to be quite rigid and lasts for several months.

Unfortunately, this method of hair perm is not suitable for everyone. Thin and soft hair, under the influence of drugs, stretches at the roots and does not hold its shape well. In addition, acid makes hair more brittle. If, of all the types of hair perms, you decide to give preference to acidic, remember that this method is not safe for those with sensitive scalps and brittle, dry hair.

Alkaline hair perm

The pH level of alkaline curling products ranges from 8 to 9.5. Alkaline perm is less durable than acid perm. It lasts for about 3 months. Alkaline perm is used mainly for styling unruly hair. It is also done if the client’s perm was previously weak. This perm method allows you to achieve a tighter curl. After alkaline curling, the curls are elastic and natural.

The active component of the alkaline curling composition is ammonium thioglycolate. This is a chemical compound that is formed by the reaction of glycolic acid with ammonia. Preparations for alkaline curling penetrate into the hair, opening the cuticle scales. This type of perm is faster than acid perm. In addition, it is safer for hair, since high temperatures are not required. Of course, under no circumstances should the drug be left on the hair for longer than the time specified in the instructions.

When analyzing what types of perms there are and choosing the most suitable one for yourself, know that alkaline perms have a gentler effect on the hair. But it is not suitable for all hair. For example, on straight, coarse and heavy hair, an alkaline curl lasts less well and comes off after 1.5 months.

The concentration of alkali in the curling preparation is high. Therefore, the master needs skill in working with such drugs in order to avoid damage to the hair structure and chemical burns to the client’s scalp.

Tinted dyes do not cover gray hair, so if you want to know how a new shade will look when purchasing them, keep in mind: your appearance will not be exactly the same as when dyed with permanent dye.

This type of hair perm requires twisting or wrapping. Under the influence of alkali, hair noticeably increases in volume. If they are wrapped with too much tension, the product will be distributed unevenly and the hair will be damaged.

As you can see in the photo, when performing this type of perm, the hair must be wound onto bobbins without strong tension, but so that they fit tightly to the surface of the curlers.

Type of perm with thioglycolic acid

This type of perm is considered gentle. During chemical treatment, hair does not swell as sharply as with acid or alkaline perm. It can even be done on colored hair. However, the effect will be short-lived. A perm with thioglycolic acid begins to fade within a month.

Neutral type of perm (with photo)

The pH level of the preparation for neutral curling is 7.4. Compositions for such perms are made taking into account water-repellent (hydrophobic) zones and zones that more easily absorb excess liquid. A neutral perm balances these differences. With this type of perm, the hair does not swell too much and is freed from additional stress. The curl obtained as a result of neutral perm is quite durable, but in appearance it differs from alkaline perm.

Pay attention to the photo: this type of hair perm provides strong, bouncy curls that look natural:

Neutral hair curling is suitable for any curls, even very soft ones.

What perm to do: amino acid perm

The preparation for amino acid curling is based on amino acids and proteins. If you have not yet decided which perm to get, you can choose this method, as it provides a gentle procedure that minimizes the damage that chemicals cause to your hair.

In addition, amino acids and proteins nourish and heal hair. The curls are soft and natural. However, amino acid hair curling cannot be considered permanent. Therefore, it is not recommended to do it on coarse, long and heavy hair: under the influence of its own weight, such hair develops even faster than others.

A modern type of hair perm with silk proteins

This modern type of hair perm with silk proteins is also called silk perm, or silk wave. The preparations for this type of curling include silk proteins. They improve the condition of the hair. This chemistry is useful even for bleached hair.

Look at the photo of this type of hair perm: the curls are soft and last for about 2 months:

To make curling with silk proteins more durable, it is recommended to do it on short or medium-length hair. Then they will not straighten under their own weight.

Bioperm is a type of chemical hair perm.

Biohair perm is a relatively new and already very fashionable type of perm. Today, this type of hair perm is considered one of the safest. The main feature of preparations for biowaves is that they do not contain ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and thioglycolic acid. Instead, a drug similar to hair molecules is used. The curls are long-lasting and natural, and the hair looks healthy and well-groomed.

Biochemical hair perm lasts on the hair for 3 to 6 months. On curly hair, the curl can last up to 9 months.

This type of hair perm is carried out in three stages. First, the hair is rolled into curlers and treated with a special curling compound. At this stage, the hair is saturated with protein. Then the master applies the following composition, which causes thickening of the protein that soaked the hair in the first stage. Finally, the hair is treated with a third composition to restore normal acid-base balance and fix curls.

For bio-curling, curlers of different diameters are used, which allows you to adjust the size of the curls. To make your hair look more natural, you can use curlers of several diameters at the same time.

Bio-curling works best on normal or oily hair. It is not recommended to perform this type of perm on dry, damaged, brittle, bleached hair or with baldness. The final result of a biowave largely depends on the professionalism of the hairdresser, as well as on the quality of the preparations used to treat the hair.

What types of perms are there: hair carving (with photo)

If you are interested in other ways to get perms, we suggest you familiarize yourself with the new method. Hair carving is a technology for treating hair with a special chemical composition to subsequently give it the required shape. Although chemicals are used for it, this type of perm cannot be classified as chemical.

As you can see in the photo, hair carving lifts the curls at the roots, making the hairstyle look fuller:

Carving hair curling allows you to get small curls, imitate vertical chemistry, slightly curl the ends of your hair or curl your entire hair into curls. If desired, you can create a feeling of negligence - the so-called “artistic disorder”. It is no coincidence that this type of perm is called “long-term styling.”

Compared to conventional perm technologies, carving is as safe as possible for hair. A hairstyle created using carving lasts for 1-2 months. After this period, the hair gradually straightens. High-quality carving does not damage the hair, and when the curls go away, there will be no traces of curling left.

How to do carving hair perm

How carving is done and how long this procedure takes are questions that concern many. On average, this method of curling will take you about 1.5 hours. The master applies a chemical composition to your hair and curls the strands with curlers, forming a hairstyle. After the required time, the curlers are removed, the hair is washed, styled and dried.

Like any other curling technology, carving has its limitations. It is not advisable to perform it on long, thick, coarse and heavy hair, as it will quickly straighten under its own weight.

Carving is useful for those with oily hair. Thanks to it, your hair will dry out and look tidier.

No matter how safe the carving technology is, it is still associated with the treatment of hair with chemicals. Therefore, the procedure is not recommended for weak, thin, highlighted or bleached hair.

It is better to carve hair that is not too long, strong and healthy enough to withstand the treatment normally. The hair should also be soft enough to be curled.

American way of hair curling

The final result of a perm depends on the chosen hair curling method. The hairdresser determines the optimal method, focusing on the client's hairstyle, the structure and condition of his hair, face shape, and figure. There are several methods of hair curling.

The American hair curling method is usually performed on long and medium-length hair. The hair is curled with special curlers or knitting needles. The curls are large, stiff and look natural.

This curl is very suitable for people with large facial features, as the curls frame the face well. The advantage of this method of curling is that as the hair grows, the border between the curled and non-curled part remains almost invisible. However, “American chemistry” is not cheap.

Type of antichemistry hair wrap and its photo

Hair anti-chemistry is straightening curls. This type of hair curling is performed on naturally curly hair. It also allows you to correct the shortcomings of a regular perm when the curls are too steep. To perform anti-chemical treatment, a perm solution is applied to the hair, and then the hair is constantly combed with a comb during the period of action of the drug.

As you can see in the photo of this type of wrap, the hair does not become completely smooth, but is significantly straightened:

Perm wellaformer

Wellaformer is not the name of the perm method, but the device with which it is performed. Vellaformer consists of latex bags into which strands of hair are placed. The bags shrink, causing the hair to curl. This curl is suitable for hair of medium length or slightly longer.

Vertical hair perm and its photo

Vertical perm is suitable for long hair. To create it, long spiral curlers are used.

Pay attention to the photo: When perming vertically, the bobbin is placed vertically in relation to the surface of the head and a strand is wound onto it from roots to ends. Then the curlers are secured.

Vertical hair perm looks very beautiful, but it has a serious drawback. As hair grows, the border between curled and uncurled areas becomes more and more noticeable. Therefore, hair with vertical growth requires complex care.

Horizontal hair perm (with photo)

Horizontal perm is the most common method when perming bobbins of any size. The bobbins are placed horizontally in relation to the base of the strand. This placement is observed in all areas of the head.

As you can see in the photo, with horizontal perm, the strands are wound from the ends to the base:

Double curling during perm

Double twisting during perm is performed on long hair. To make the curls more intense, the root part of the strand needs to be wound onto bobbins of a smaller diameter.

The bobbins should be wound towards each other, then the strands will be evenly curled along their entire length. Each strand is separated with a zigzag parting, carefully combed and twisted.

Perm method for hair ends

The method of perming the ends of the hair is excellent for thin and sparse hair cut in a cascade. This type of curling makes your hair look voluminous and makes it easier to style your hair further. Curled hair ends also help to visually widen the bottom of a triangular face.

Perm on curlers (with photo)

Papillots are soft bobbins. The result of a perm with curlers differs from a perm with ordinary hard bobbins. With the help of curlers you can get soft natural curls without creases at the ends of the strands.

With this method of winding, the strand is separated with a zigzag parting, combed and wound onto a curling iron, trying to get as close to the scalp as possible. The ends of the papillots are bent into a ring to secure the twisted strand.

As you can see in the photo, curling on curlers begins with strands combed from the edge hairline:

The first three curls are placed on the forehead and temples. The hair of the occipital zone is twisted from the neck to the crown along the contour so that subsequent rows of curlers can be easily placed inside this contour. As a result, the curls are arranged around the head in tiers, moving from the neck to the crown.

Spiral curling curls are performed on medium-length hair. Hair begins to curl from the back of the head. Using vertical partings, the hair is divided into thin strands, which are wound into bobbins in a spiral, moving from bottom to top. Difficulties may arise due to different hair lengths. To avoid them, use pieces of paper. The papillots are fixed with an L-shaped bend.

Perm method at hair roots

Perm at the hair roots is performed on short haircuts that need to be given volume. This curling method is also used to correct hairstyles if previously curled hair has already grown back and the curls have not yet gone away. In the latter case, the hair is wrapped in curlers and coated with a weaker compound. Only the root part of the hair is subjected to chemical treatment.

Perm at the roots can also be done on straight hair to give it extra volume or dry out problem areas.

Unfortunately, the effect of such a perm is short-lived. The hair grows, and the curled part moves down from the root zone.

Trapezoidal curling for perm

Trapezoidal curling during perm allows you to give the hair additional volume near the face, but at the same time practically does not increase the volume of hair on the crown and in the root zone.

The hair is curled starting from the lower occipital area. The first strand is separated from the marginal hairline and wound around the bobbin to the very base. A frame is attached to this bobbin. It is needed in order to hold the remaining bobbins in the shape of a trapezoid.

Subsequent strands are not wound along the entire length, but depending on the future hairstyle. Previous strands should overlap the subsequent ones.

French bubble perm method

The French bubble perm method was first proposed by the famous French company L’Oreal. The peculiarity of this method is that before applying to the hair, the perm composition is whipped into foam.

Hence the name of the method - “bubble”. Thanks to the foam, the required temperature regime for curling is ensured, and the hair is saturated with oxygen, which is formed when the product is whipped. The curls are very natural, so this curling method is recommended even for men.

As the famous joke goes, women’s wishes regarding hairstyles are simple: straight hair should be curled, curly hair should be straightened, long hair should be cut, and short hair should be extended. It is the eternal desire for new horizons of beauty that allows girls to look unique. And hair chemicals, as perm is popularly called, is one of the methods of transformation.

What types of hair chemicals are there?

Depending on the composition that hairdressers use to curl curls, chemistry is divided into several types, which affect the hair differently and give different effects. So, what are the types of hair chemicals?

Acid perm. This is exactly what fashionistas did in the 1970s-1990s of the last century. Today, the industry has risen to a new level, and now this type of perm no longer burns the hair, but acts much more gently, but the same reagent is used - glyceryl monothioglycolate (pH 6.9 - 7.2). Modern acid chemistry allows you to create curls of any shape that do not fall apart and hold curl well. The reagent penetrates deep into the hair and fixes its shape there, partially destroying the core of the hair, but leaving it smooth and shiny on the outside. This type of perm should not be done by those with weak, thin hair, but girls with a rigid structure can safely experiment!

Alkaline perm. This type of long-term styling is carried out in different versions: pure to create elastic curls, diluted to simulate light waves and with the addition of plant extracts to compensate for the damage from chemical exposure. In all cases, the active substance is ammonium thioglycolate (pH from 8 to 9.5). Alkaline chemistry is less aggressive and does not damage the hair as much because it does not require temperature exposure to fix the effect. However, you should make sure that your stylist has already dealt with this type of styling before, because not following the instructions correctly can result in scalp burns and damaged hair. The price of this curl is an order of magnitude lower than other options, but it is not suitable for everyone: it holds up well on thin hair, but will not work on coarse hair.

Neutral curl. This method is for those who want a long-term effect, but do not dare to do full-fledged chemistry, which lasts until you cut your hair. A composition with a neutral pH will help you curl your hair into curls or waves for several months without damaging, and even restoring the hair structure due to the keratin contained in it. Gradually the effect will decrease until after about 4-6 months the hair straightens completely. This is exactly how a root curl for volume is done, which does not curl the curls, but only lifts the hair at the roots from the head, creating stunning volume. It is important to understand that after a neutral perm you should use only special hair products with a neutral pH, otherwise the effect will not be enough for several weeks.

Bio-perm. This prefix not only makes you think about the usefulness of the procedure, but literally determines the composition. There are no usual alkalis and acids here, there is no ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. The active ingredient is cysteine, a protein related to natural hair proteins, which, when thickened, fixes the curls in the desired shape for 6-9 months. The hair after this procedure is vibrant and shiny. The main disadvantage is that manufacturers have not found a way to get rid of the unpleasant odor, which eats into the hair and does not leave the owner of a new hairstyle for a couple of days. Almost all manufacturers recommend not washing or combing your hair for three days after a bio-perm, because after washing off the composition it still continues to be gentle on the hair and achieves the final result only on the third day.

Amino acid perm. Manufacturers claim that regular use of the composition will not only not harm, but will restore thin, dull and brittle hair due to the amino acids and proteins contained in the composition. Such chemistry will not work on heavy and coarse hair, because it is designed exclusively for weakened, thin curls, and even here it is used only on medium or short hair. Large long curls will unwind within a few days under their own weight, while short and light ones will keep their shape for up to two months.

Carving- a new word in curling. This is a modern long-term styling that does not damage the hair and lasts up to two months. Moreover, the composition is designed so that under its influence the hair gains strength and additional shine. The main disadvantage of such chemicals is the amount that will have to be left in the salon. On the other hand, you have to pay well for everything good, so the price is natural.

In addition to differences in curling based on the principle of the main active ingredient, there are other signs.

Major chemical treatment for medium hair photo

A large perm is the dream of many girls. It is these curls that look as natural as possible, as if the hair is naturally curly. Usually, large curlers or three large bobbins at a time are used for it, because the standard ones produce too small curls.

At the same time, the hair “bounces”, creating a large volume and significantly decreasing in length (see photo).

Light chemicals for medium hair

A light perm that does not create curls, but only imitates a light natural wave, looks even more natural and natural. It is not done on long hair, because such an unobtrusive hairstyle will simply fall apart under the weight of the hair, but on medium-length curls, a vertical wave looks elegant.

Wet chemicals for medium hair: before and after photos

Wet perm requires styling using products that create the effect of wet hair. Having become fashionable at the end of the last century, such women's hairstyles are still popular today. The curls after such treatment are still wet, treated with mousse or gel, applying the composition to the ends and distributing to the middle of the length. The roots dry out, creating volume, and the ends of the hair look as if their owner was caught in summer rain.

Spiral perm

In contrast to all the aspirations for naturalness that pursue previous types of curls, the spiral one puts the emphasis on artificiality. Elastic, doll-like curls in nature can only be found among certain African peoples. The impeccable geometric spiral is very popular, as reviews say.

If you don’t trust salon professionals, you can take the risk of getting a perm at home using the instructions in the video.
