Do-it-yourself sun skirt: a step-by-step guide to making a flared skirt with a wide belt for a girl. Sun skirt for girl

Hello, dear readers of the site We sew beautifully!

Every girl or woman needs a wardrobe. A beautiful flared sun skirt will complement your fashion wardrobe with a stylish item. And such a skirt can be made quite independently. On its basis, a lot of fashionable models of skirts, dresses, sundresses are sewn for everyday life and for dancing. Consider how to sew a sun skirt with your own hands quickly, simply and beautifully.

Who suits the sun flare

This skirt model is suitable for girls and women who have a thin waist. If your waist is not like that, then this is simply not your style. You need to choose a style that is more suitable for your body type.

If you have large hips, then such a skirt can hide the fullness and, depending on the fabric, it is advisable for you to choose any styles obliquely from the sun from thin fabric to a quarter of the sun or a year on denser fabrics that fall well with an oblique cut and create small tails.

You can make a pattern directly on the fabric. But if you do not yet have practical sewing skills, then first, for reliability, use a paper pattern. If you take a good fabric right away, then I advise you to do a trial version first simply on an unnecessary fabric on which you will practice.

measurements

It only takes two steps:

 • Waist;
 • product length (from the waistline to the bottom edge of the future skirt).

Pattern skirt sun flared and cutting on the fabric

We cut on the fabric immediately without a pattern. The calculation of the pattern is like this.

Radius = FROM / (2 * 3.14 (Pi number)).

For example. FROM = 70cm, therefore Radius = 70 / (2 * 3.14) = 11.14 cm.

We set aside the resulting number from the corner with an arc using a cm tape or a compass = this will be the waistline.

From the resulting line, set aside the length of the skirt + allowances for the seams.

In order to increase the depth of the tails in the future product, it is necessary to deepen the waist line on the pattern by 0.5-1 cm along the shared thread.

We lay out the sun flare pattern on the fabric

Let's consider two options.

First layout option. The fabric is located without a fold. Cutting takes place in a mirror image. Check the length of the product if you are making a long skirt. This version will have two seams.

Important: please note that if you have a satin fabric, shiny or with a pile, it is not recommended to cut it this way due to the fact that the overflow of the fabric or the direction of the pile will look different.

Second layout option. Here the fabric has a fold. And the skirt will be without seams at all. The length will not be too long due to the width of the fabric.

The third option for layout and cutting. The fabric is folded into four. In the drawing, conditional measurements, your measurements will naturally be different.

Sun skirt pattern. Do-it-yourself sun skirt - 4.4 out of 5 based on 26 votes

In this master class, you will find all the necessary information for making a skirt pattern with your own hands and learn:
what you need to have to build a skirt pattern;
what measurements will be needed for the "sun" skirt;
how to make a skirt pattern;
how to better and more rationally cut fabric using a sun skirt pattern.
A pattern for a skirt is made using:
centimeter tape;
paper sheet;
ruler and a simple pencil.
For cutting the material, you will need scissors, chalk and tailor's pins.

Taking measurements is very easy.

Before you start building a skirt pattern, you need to take measurements. For this model, you need only two parameters: waist circumference and product length. If the skirt is on an elastic band (without a belt), then add a few more centimeters to the waist circumference. During the measurement, it is necessary to stand straight, without drawing in the stomach, and without protruding it.
So, the pattern of the "sun" skirt is made according to the measurements:
From - waist circumference;
Du - the length of the skirt.

How to make a skirt pattern with your own hands?

Making a skirt pattern is elementary. First build a right angle. From the top of this corner on one of the sides, you need to set aside the radius of the circle, calculating it by the formula: R = From: (2 x Pi), where the number Pi = 3.14.
Draw a part of a circle of a given radius using a compass. If you don’t have such a tool at hand, then use a centimeter tape. Align the division on it, equal to the value of the radius calculated by the formula, with the top of the right angle and press it with your finger. Then move the end of the measuring tape from one side of the right angle to the other, making marks. Connect them together. The resulting rounded line will be the thallus line on the pattern for the skirt.
Next, you need to measure the length of the skirt from the waist line and draw the bottom line of the product according to the same principle as when constructing the waist line. The pattern for the "sun" skirt is ready. Now you can start cutting the fabric.

How to cut fabric?

Fold the material for sewing the skirt four times (as a handkerchief is folded). Lay the pattern on top, aligning its straight sides with the folds of the material. Secure the template with tailor's pins or secure it by simply placing a weight on it.
Chalk around the waist and bottom lines. Add 1 cm at the top of the seam and at the bottom of the hem, draw rounded lines and cut the skirt along them. The cut of the skirt is ready, now it remains to cut out the belt. Draw a rectangle whose length is From + 2 cm for the seams, and the other is twice the width of the belt plus 2 cm for the seams. Belt width is optional. Usually, a narrow belt is made in the “sun” skirt, only 2 cm. However, there are models with a very wide belt or without it at all - with elastic or with oblique trim.
If the width of the fabric does not allow for a one-piece version of the skirt, then you can cut it with seams on the sides. To do this, the fabric must be folded in half and cut out each of the halves separately.

A beautiful coquette certainly needs to wear a luxurious skirt in which it would be difficult not to notice her. Girls wear sun skirts because these products will never go out of style. In addition, they can be sewn with your own hands, and from different materials. In this article we will talk about how to sew a sun skirt.

A beautiful coquette must certainly wear a luxurious skirt in which it would be difficult not to notice her

What is this product? This skirt is very fluffy, and if you smooth it out, it will become round. Flared sun can be sewn from satin or chiffon. You can make it short or below the knee. In any case, for beginners, sewing such a product will be an excellent occasion to master the skill of hand-made clothing creation.

An approximate calculation of the time to work with a sun-flared skirt is 1.5 hours.

The work consists of the following stages:

 1. A pattern for such a product is not needed, therefore, at the first stage, materials should be prepared. Among them: pins, thread, fabric, scissors and a sewing machine.
 2. The fabric from which the skirt will be sewn must be folded 4 times. If the fabric is with a pattern, then it should look at the person, that is, it should be turned outward.
 3. After that, you need to cut the fabric to the waist. For sewing a belt, a few strips will be enough. The width of the segment is a few centimeters, this will be enough. The strips are then set aside.
 4. To sew a belt, the fabric will need to be tailored. As a pattern, you can use any skirt that fits well on a woman.
 5. The skirt is folded 4 times and applied by the waist to the folded side of the fabric. Then you need to take scissors and cut a semicircle with a width equal to the width of the folded product. It is recommended to sew the belt a little less, as the fabric stretches well.
 6. Then the bottom of the skirt is cut off. The product must be cut. The unfolded part of the product is opened. If everything was done correctly, then the hem should have the same length on all sides. If a perfect semicircle is not obtained, then the excess fabric must be cut off.
 7. The edge of the hem is rolled up. You need to sew a straight line on a sewing machine. Since the edges of the product are round, it will be quite difficult to hem the hem, but do not despair if difficulties arise!
 8. The bottom of the product must be ironed. Thanks to this, all irregularities will disappear.

At the last stage, the remaining threads should be cut.

This is done in order to draw an even circle along the fabric surface. The fold point should be in the center of the rounded line.
 4. To draw a circle, you can use a homemade compass made from twine, a pen and a pin.
 5. The fabric is cut along the circumference.
 6. You need to use a sewing machine to sew even and neat seams.

These are not all ways of sewing clothes of this style. There are a lot of ideas, and even more taste preferences. Therefore, if you master the skill of sewing, you can make clothes for yourself, thereby saving money.

Even from the school course of labor lessons, cutting and sewing, many women remember how to cut the First creation, sewn with their own hands. A skirt-sun or a half-sun skirt is just one of those. For many, this skirt was the first one they sewed themselves. And this is due primarily to the simplicity of the product. The pattern and sewing of such a skirt will not take much time and will please the eye for a long time. And even a beginner in sewing can quickly figure out how to cut a sun-skirt.

Versatility and variety

Sun skirts are a special niche among skirts in general. These are not only models for little girls or schoolgirls. Sun skirts can be appropriate for different ages and occasions. On the pages of modern glossy magazines, models are depicted in sun skirts and tight tops. For evening outings, a floor-length skirt made of satin or chiffon will look profitable and interesting. Lightweight and relevant in the warm season and in resorts, and a knee-length skirt made of dense fabric will look good on an office lady. And, of course, the cut of the sun skirt for wedding dresses with several layers of flying light fabrics has already become a classic. Appearance depends on how to cut and sew a sun skirt.

There are also derivative options. The finished product will differ in the number of seams, folds and, accordingly, the amount of material used. Half-sun, double and quarter-sun skirts are cut in the same way.

Each owner of a skirt with the opening of the sun feels light, fresh and feminine in it. And everyone who has ever sewed it himself knows how to cut a sun-skirt quickly and easily. You will need a tape measure or centimeter, scissors (ideally tailor's) and chalk, soap or a fabric pencil.

Choosing fabric for the "sun"

Before you cut a sun skirt for a girl, you need to choose the appropriate fabric. For the warm season, light "breathable" fabrics will be more appropriate and more convenient. The ideal option would be chiffon, satin, linen, chintz, batiste or jeans. Cotton fabrics will be pleasant for a daytime walk, and in a silk sun skirt you will be the queen of a summer evening.

For winter, warm, dense fabrics are traditional, such as wool, velvet, knitwear, boucle, jacquard and tapestry.

For costume parties, children's matinees or carnivals, you can decorate the sun skirt with flounces, sequins, lace or embroidery. It can be made from several layers of chiffon or dense heavy silk. The main thing is to think over the design of the future product in detail before cutting out the sun-skirt.

Nuances when choosing a fabric

The sun skirt has several nuances that you need to know before cutting and sewing the sun skirt.

Do not give preference to plastic fabrics that are easily pulled out, even if they are placed on the palm of your hand. The finished product will also quickly lose its shape by stretching down. If you still decide to stay on such a fabric, then it is better to make a skirt with a lining. Without a lining, such a skirt will “stick” and emphasize flaws.

For easily stretchy fabrics, it is necessary to make an allowance in width of about 5 centimeters.

If you decide to opt for a dark saturated satin fabric, you need to take into account the change in shade along the entire length of the roll segment. This will be most noticeable in black satin. When connecting the side seams, the satin will shine differently from different sides. To avoid this effect, it is recommended to make a pattern not along the equity, but along the longitudinal direction of the thread. This advice is relevant only for skirts-sun and semi-sun. Direct models exclude such an effect. Our finished product has several nuances that you need to know before cutting and sewing a sun skirt.

Striped "sun"

Do not opt for striped or plaid fabrics if you are new to sewing. Only experienced seamstresses and tailors can sew a striped sun skirt so that it would not be embarrassing to wear it in light later.

On one side of the seam, the pattern will turn out horizontally, and the other - vertically. To fix this, you can flip the seams. Remove the side ones, and make the main ones in front and behind. You can also cut the fabric not from the corner, but in the shared direction. Then it would be appropriate to make connecting seams in front and behind. The stripes will converge, visually forming a pattern with a pattern angle of 90 degrees.

If you want to sew a plaid sun skirt, be prepared for the fact that you will need a lot more material to match the pattern. Additional consumption will be easy to calculate, knowing the height of the rapport pattern. The larger the cell or its pattern, the greater the consumption. Add the height of the cage to each side of the pattern. Before cutting out a girl's sun skirt, try attaching square or striped designs to each other. Evaluate how best to combine them.

Necessary calculations

Correctly made measurements will help to cut the sun skirt correctly. If you do not have a centimeter, you can take measurements with thread. Do not use a hard tape measure. The measurements will not be accurate and the product will be damaged.

First you need to determine two sizes. This is the size of the hip circumference of the one for whom the skirt will be sewn, and the length of the product. After taking measurements, we write down the girth of the hips as O b and the length as D yu. For example, About b = 90 cm, and D u = 95. After that, you need to determine the radius of the waist circumference R1. It is calculated by the formula:

 • (O b + 5) / 2p, where n is a constant equal to 3.14

Waist radius for example = (90+5)/6.24=15.22 cm

After that, we determine the radius of the lower part R2 of the skirt by the formula:

 • R1 + D and

Hem radius for example = 15.22+95=110.22 cm

You can use paper to create a pattern, but experienced seamstresses can do without it. If this is one of your first creations or you are not confident in your abilities, make a pattern on paper, cut out all the details, sew together and try on. Instead of paper, you can use oilcloth.

Getting to the pattern

So, how to cut the sun-skirt:

 • We fold the material in half and begin to draw radii on it. Having folded the fabric in half, mark a point on the fold line in the middle of the length. From it we draw the radius of the waist. To draw a radius, measure from the starting point segments of length R1 and put points at their end. Then just connect them together. The resulting semicircle will be the radius R1.

 • Similarly, draw the radius of the bottom of R2. Check the correctness of the measurements by measuring the distance from the first radius to the second. It should be equal to the intended length of your skirt. Leave a seam allowance of 0.5-1 cm above the upper radius, and 0.5 cm under the lower radius. The smaller the bottom allowance, the neater and more effective the hem will turn out.

 • For a more even distribution of waves (fold), change the radius of the waist, bringing its center closer to the starting point by 1.5-2 cm (this step can be skipped). You can cut your pattern.
 • After cutting out the sun-skirt, you need to transfer the patterns to the fabric. If there is no large table, you can sit right on the floor. It is important that when transferring the pattern to the fabric, it is motionless.
 • If you want your future skirt to have only one seam, fold the fabric for cutting twice more. You will get four layers, which you will subsequently connect with one seam. The only disadvantage of such a product is a large consumption of fabric.
 • For a more even distribution of waves (fold), change the radius of the waist, bringing its center closer to the starting point by 1.5-2 cm (this step can be skipped).

Half skirt

The process of how to cut a sun and semi-sun skirt differs in the number of patterns and fabric consumption. For a half-sun skirt, more parts are needed, respectively, the number of seams will be more.

The algorithm of actions is exactly the same, with the exception of the first paragraph. The fabric is not folded in half, but cut in one piece.

To save material, some novice seamstresses make a small but annoying mistake. Two patterns must be placed on the fabric in such a way that the left and right seams of both are located on the longitudinal and lobar sections, respectively. If you arrange the patterns in such a way that the left seam of one will be with a longitudinal cut, and the other with a shared one, then in the future this will have a bad effect on the product. Such joints will look messy, seams will be noticeable, bumps will appear.

How to cut a sun skirt with an elastic band

The top of the sun and semi-sun skirts can be varied. Someone uses a stitched belt, someone does not. You can tie a beautiful ribbon or belt over it. Elastic bands are inserted into light fabrics. A skirt with an elasticated waist will accentuate the figure of its owner.

The elasticated belt is cut entirely, preferably the direction along the elastic band can be inserted not for the entire length of the skirt, but in several places. In such a skirt it will be comfortable to sit for a long time. Such styles are relevant for overweight women.

Make a pattern for the future belt. Determine the width according to the chosen style, it may be different. Don't forget to leave allowances around the edges.

After processing the edges of the skirt, you need to fix the belt on it. Pin it on the skirt so that the front side of the belt is 1 centimeter below the top edge of the skirt. Sew in a way convenient for you.

There is nothing easier than cutting it. It will look stylish and relevant, and it will take a little time, effort and money.

How best to sew a sun skirt with an elastic band:

 • If you want a very fluffy skirt with a lot of pleats at the waist, draw a larger radius when cutting. Be sure to line up any folds before stitching. For dense and heavy fabrics, wide folds look more advantageous.
 • Before sewing natural fabrics, in order to avoid deformation of the product, it is recommended to wash and iron.
 • Choose the right patterns on the fabric that will not increase the figure. Elasticated sun skirt visually adds volume to the hips.
 • If the bottom of the skirt ends up uneven, ask someone to help you. Put on a skirt and start slowly turning in a circle in it, the second person can hold any flat part and draw a new edge on it, with chalk, for example.

Today we have discussed in detail how to properly cut a sun skirt and avoid common mistakes. Good luck! Sew with pleasure!

For any girl, having skirts in her wardrobe means being elegant and attracting attention with a beautiful walk. But what to do if not every young lady is satisfied with those outfits that have various fashion boutiques in their assortment? Of course, in this case, you should turn to the immortal classics and sew your own outfit.

What could be easier than using fabric, thread and scissors to build your own clothes to your liking? For example, almost every woman knows how to cut the "sun", a skirt. This is one of the simplest models and at the same time the most popular, which came from the 60s of the last century. The trend still does not lose its relevance.

Why does every girl need a sun skirt?

First of all, because a skirt of this style suits absolutely everyone, even girls with a non-standard figure and those who do not like to wear such an outfit at all. It is a free maximum flared skirt, sitting on the waist or hips. Even the most distant person from tailoring knows how to cut the “sun” (skirt), although it may seem that this is not so.

Everyone remembers how, as a child, you were taught to cut snowflakes out of paper? It is necessary to fold the leaf in four, carefully cut out the middle and trim the edges to end up with a circle. To sew a "sun" skirt with your own hands, you will need to do exactly the same manipulations, only with fabric.

Selection of material and taking measurements

First of all, you should decide for what season you need a similar skirt. And, based on this, choose a fabric. For the summer, a variant of brightly colored chiffon fabric is suitable; for the autumn or winter season, you can stop at a fabric made from natural wool, thick cotton or trouser fabric. The main condition when choosing a material: it should not stretch in any direction. Otherwise, the weight will then have to equalize the edges so that the skirt does not look crooked.

The next criterion that you need to decide on is how much fabric is needed to make a skirt of the desired length. For example, from a square piece with a side of 1.5 meters, you get a short, 45 cm long skirt "sun" for a girl. A paper pattern is not required, which makes the whole process very simple. The only drawback of the "sun" is a very high consumption of fabric. That is, to sew a skirt 1 meter long, you will need at least 2.5 m of material. Do not forget that when cutting the fabric folds four times!

Before you cut the "sun" skirt, you should take measurements. Although it is advisable to know your dimensions before purchasing the fabric in order to buy a large enough piece. You need to measure your waist, hips and length. A long skirt "sun" will be an excellent option for the summer period, a shorter one is good for the office. From the average model, you can get a school skirt "sun" for a girl. The pattern, which is usually cut out of paper with preliminary calculations, we repeat, is not required - no blanks cut out of wallpaper or oilcloth, everything is extremely simple!

Work inventory

Sewing will take more time only if there is no sewing machine at home and you need to sweep everything manually. First you need to prepare all the necessary materials:

 • the cloth;
 • scissors;
 • centimeter tape;
 • pins / needles;
 • threads;
 • crayon or bar of soap;
 • elastic band for the belt.

Before you cut a skirt "sun" with one seam at home, it is better to free up more space in advance on some flat surface. For a short model, a folding table is quite suitable. A long skirt will probably take up the entire floor of the room.

Skirt fit

The process consists of the following steps:

 1. We fold the fabric in four. In order for the skirt to turn out even in the end, you need to stab the fabric with needles along the edges.
 2. Next, you need to make a notch - cut a small circle in the middle, which will be equal to the circumference of the hips. This is done in the following way. We divide the volume of the hips by 6. We measure the resulting length with a centimeter from the corner (the one that is the middle of the entire fabric folded four times) in several places to get a quarter of the circle. First, several dots are marked on the fabric with chalk, and then they are connected into a single line.
 3. From the resulting notch, measure the length of the skirt, leaving 2 centimeters in reserve for further processing of the bottom. In the same way, first we measure several points at a small distance from each other. Then we connect everything in one line with a crayon.
 4. On the resulting lines, cut out a pattern from the fabric. In the end, you get a circle with a hole in the middle, a kind of "doughnut".
 5. From the remaining fabric, we cut out a belt 10-12 centimeters wide (depending on the width of the elastic band) and a length equal to the waist + 10 cm in reserve. Or we buy a stretchy ribbon, on which we later put a skirt without a belt.

It is easiest to sew a sun skirt with your own hands in this way, since it is seamless. In this case, special care is not required here. To save fabric, you can sew a two-piece sun skirt. But we lose much more time. Indeed, in this case, the calculation of the "sun" skirt will last quite a long time.

We sew a skirt

 1. Sweep the top down to the waist for a slight ruffle.
 2. If the skirt is made with a belt, then it must first be folded along and stitched.
 3. The resulting belt is sewn to the "sun".
 4. In the resulting belt, use a pin to thread an elastic band, a length equal to the volume of the waist.
 5. We connect the edges of the elastic band. We do the same with the edges of the belt.
 6. You can put the skirt on a simple wide elastic band. To do this, we perform step 1, after which we immediately sew an elastic band to the outfit, bypassing steps 2-5.
 7. You can process the hem of the skirt in different ways. For example, with the help of an overlock. If it is not there, you can use the machine and process the edges with a small or large zigzag, depending on the type of fabric.
 8. From the inside, cut off excess fabric. So that it does not cause discomfort, the junction of the belt and skirt can be processed with a small zigzag or using an overlock.

After completing all these simple manipulations, we will get a finished outfit. As you can see, it’s very easy to sew a “sun” skirt with your own hands without any design problems.

Bottom processing options

Not all fabrics will fit just a processed bottom of the skirt. For example, on white material it looks rather rough. Therefore, the bottom can be folded and smoothed with a thin adhesive tape, 2 centimeters wide. You can buy it at any sewing accessories store. Another option is to fold the bottom three times and process the hem. It will take longer. But in the end, the skirt will look neat.

What to wear with a skirt "sun"?

It all depends on what fabric the outfit is made of. A long skirt "sun" looks great with tight T-shirts and tops in the summer. A knee-length plaid wool outfit is perfect for tight-fitting turtlenecks, and this beautiful look is complemented by a wide belt that hides the elastic. More "formal" gray denim flared skirts look perfect with shirts of the most daring colors. And, of course, what a true lady does not wear such an outfit with heels. Now you know how to cut the "sun". The skirt is very easy to sew on your own. Dare!
