Tankman's Day in Ukraine: the history of the holiday

The history of the Tankman's Day holiday dates back to 1946. Then, in commemoration of the great merits of the armored and mechanized troops during the Second World War, as well as for the merits of tank builders in equipping the country's weapons, Tankers' Day was celebrated on September 11th.

Later, since 1980, it has been celebrated on the second Sunday of September.

In Ukraine, this tradition was not violated, and according to the decree of President L. Kuchma of August 29, 1997, the holiday of all tankers, tank-building industry workers and veterans of tank troops was also established on the second Sunday of September.

A tank is a versatile and powerful armored fighting vehicle with cannon armament in a turret and good maneuverability due to its tracked undercarriage. Mechanized and tank Ukrainian troops form the basis of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Day of the Tankman was established in support of the initiative of veterans of the tank troops and tank builders of Ukraine, taking into account the military merits of tankmen during the Second World War, and with the aim of educating tankmen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the best traditions of previous generations.

The profession of a tanker in Russia among military specialties is especially revered by the people, and the songs “Three Tankmen” and “Tanks Rumbled on the Field” are very popular in our peacetime. The tanker is a courageous, brave and strong warrior, a defender, so it was impossible to do without a special day here.

From the history of the Russian tank

The British were the first to invent tanks, but already during the First World War, Russian designers tried to come up with something similar for our army. They made the Tsar Tank and another one, the Porokhovshchikov tank, but they did not participate in the battles.

The very first Russian battle tank was assembled at the famous Sormovo plant in Nizhny Novgorod on August 31, 1920. And even though it looked very much like French, the assembly and all the details were domestic.

In 1929, tank troops were called motorized units; in 1936 - they were renamed armored vehicles, later they were renamed several times, until in 1960 the troops became armored, as they are today.

The most famous Russian tank is the T-34, legendary, which brilliantly showed itself in the heavy battles of the Great Patriotic War and on the Kursk Bulge, and in Stalingrad and beyond, during the liberation of Russia and Europe.

Today in the Russian army tanks T-72, T-80, T-90. But this is far from the last option, designers are developing new machines.

From the history of the tankmen's holiday

In 1946, the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, by its Decree, established the Day of the Tanker in honor of tank victories on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War and for the excellent quality of vehicles made by our designers. Shortly before the publication of the Decree, on September 8, 1946, a parade of the equipment of the Kantemirovskaya division, which to this day is considered the main one in the tank troops, was held in Moscow on Red Square.

For many years, the holiday of tankers was celebrated on September 11 - the day when in 1944 the difficult Military Carpathian operation was completed and the enemy was expelled from the territory of Moldova and Western Ukraine.

In 1980, when Tankman's Day became an official holiday, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, it began to be celebrated on the second Sunday of September.

In 2006, the Decree of the President of Russia "On the Establishment of Professional Holidays ... in the Armed Forces" was issued, and the Tanker's Day was finally legalized, although it was celebrated without official documents.

How the Day of the tanker is celebrated in Russia

Immediately after the war, when the front-line victories of the tankers were still well remembered, and the roads had not yet been repaired, tank parades were held in many cities of the Soviet Union that day, and fireworks from all guns were arranged in the evening. Later, such a demonstration of military power was abandoned, keeping parades only in large cities and on the main holidays of the country. But the role of tankers in our army did not become less honorable from this.

On the Day of the tanker, celebrations are held in the tank troops, and demobilized tankmen look for their old but beloved helmets and celebrate the date with family and friends.

When tank troops drove the enemy across the entire territory of a large country, not a single tanker thought that he was born on the territory of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus or Ukraine. All were a single tank crew. Remembering those heroic days, in Belarus and Ukraine Tanker Day is also celebrated on the second Sunday of September.

Tankman's Day is a professional holiday for tank troops. The celebrations are attended by employees of tank units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation under contract and conscription, officers, cadets, teachers of specialized educational institutions. The holiday is celebrated by everyone who has ever been in the ranks of this type of troops, designers, engineers, workers of factories and research institutes that develop armored vehicles. Their relatives, friends, acquaintances and close people join the events.

In Russia, Tankman Day is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of September. In 2020, the holiday falls on September 13th.

On this day, festive events and concerts are held, at which employees accept congratulations. They are awarded insignia: medals, certificates, awards, they make gratitude titles in personal affairs. Promotions in positions and ranks coincide with the holiday.

On the second Sunday of the first autumn month, our country celebrates one of the professional military holidays - Tanker's Day. Moreover, it is celebrated on the anniversary - the 70th time. The decree that this holiday appeared in the calendar of military dates was published in the post-war 1946. On July 1, 1946, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR establishes the Day of Tankers to commemorate the great merits of the armored and mechanized troops in the defeat of the Nazi invaders in the Great Patriotic War.

Tankman's Day is one of those military holidays that are widely celebrated in the Russian Federation. It is especially widely celebrated in those settlements where tank production is located, or which are directly related to the largest tank battles of the Great Patriotic War.

The first official celebration of Tanker's Day is considered to be a remarkable event in every sense - the march of the Guards Tank Kantemirovskaya Division on Red Square.

Muscovites saw the passage of armored vehicles and other divisional weapons through the main square of the country. Eyewitnesses of this truly monumental spectacle still remember that parade as one of the outstanding events that they had to witness during their lives.

A few days before the 70th Tanker Day celebration in our country, the main Russian defense department published a short animated film for children - “What is a tank?” Liberal whiners have already managed to distinguish themselves in the comments to the animation, stating that a children's cartoon cannot contain scenes where "a tank runs over a person." The fact that in this case the authors of the comments call a Nazi warrior who came to conquer the Soviet (Russian) land, who killed, robbed, raped – perhaps everything you need to know about “our” liberals.

The cartoon itself from the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation:

Today, military tankers receive a real professional gift. We are talking about the fact that the first serial tanks of the new generation T-14 "Armata" went to the troops. More than a hundred experimental combat tanks are sent for "running" in various operational conditions. Ural specialists are simultaneously developing robotic tanks on the Armata platform. The Ministry of Defense plans to equip the troops with about 2.5 thousand T-14 Armata tanks in the next ten years.

Despite the change in the economic situation in the country, there is no talk of revising the plans yet, and I would like to hope that all these plans will be brought to a real implementation.

"Military Review" congratulates all those involved (not only directly tankers, but also the creators of tank equipment) on the holiday!

In Russia, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of September in accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation of May 31, 2006 "On the establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation." The holiday was established in order to revive and develop domestic military traditions, increase the prestige of military service and in recognition of the merits of military specialists in solving the problems of ensuring the defense and security of the state.

The holiday was established by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated July 11, 1946, to commemorate the great merits of the armored and mechanized troops in defeating the enemy during the Great Patriotic War, as well as for the merits of tank builders in equipping the Armed Forces of the country with armored vehicles, and was called the Day of tankers.

In the Russian Federation, since 2006, the holiday has become known as Tanker's Day. The date of the celebration remained the same - the second Sunday of September.

Tank troops are the branch of service and the main striking force of the Russian Ground Forces. They are used primarily in conjunction with motorized rifle troops in the main directions and perform the following main tasks: in defense - in direct support of motorized rifle troops when repelling an enemy offensive and delivering counterattacks and counterattacks; on the offensive - inflicting powerful cutting blows to a great depth, exploiting success, defeating the enemy in head-on engagements and battles. Tanks of various types form the basis of armament of tank troops.

Tank troops have gone through a heroic path of formation and development - from light tanks with small arms to modern ones equipped with rocket and cannon weapons, from individual armored detachments of the Red Army to tank armies of the Second World War and tank formations of modern formations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

The origin of domestic tank building dates back to 1915. The first domestic model of a new type of weapon, later called a tank, was a four-ton armored wheeled-tracked combat vehicle "Vezdekhod".

In 1918, on the basis of the old Russian army, the armored forces of the Red Army were created.

By order of the Main Armored Directorate of the Red Army, the first domestic tank was created at the Sormovsky plant in Nizhny Novgorod and on August 31, 1920 went to sea trials. Since 1927, serial production of armored vehicles has been established.

In the 1930s, tank building continued to develop and increase production capacity. The design bureaus under the leadership of Mikhail Koshkin and Joseph Kotin created the new generation T-34 and KV tanks, which, in terms of their combat capabilities, significantly exceeded similar foreign models, and the legendary T-34 was subsequently recognized as the best tank of World War II.

By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), a large tank fleet (about 16 thousand vehicles) was created, which was based on light tanks T-26 and BT, medium T-34 (1229) and heavy KV-1 (636).

The war became a severe test of the courage and skill of tank soldiers, tank builders, the strength of the armor of domestic tanks, and the effectiveness of their combat use. On the battlefields and battles, armored troops acted as the main shock and crushing force in offensive operations, and were the basis for the stability of rifle units in defense. Their role was especially great in the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, in operations to liberate the Right-Bank Ukraine, in the Byelorussian, Iasi-Kishinev, Vistula-Oder, Berlin and Manchurian operations. For military merit, almost all tank and mechanized corps were awarded honorary titles and orders.

For courage and selflessness shown in the fight against the Nazi invaders, 1142 tank soldiers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and 16 people were awarded this title twice. The heroic and selfless work of tank builders was also appreciated by the Motherland. More than 9 thousand of them have been awarded high state awards.

In the post-war period, armored and mechanized troops continued to develop, and tank soldiers more than once had to participate in local wars and conflicts, where they honorably completed their tasks.

At different times, tank troops were called differently: in the 1920s - armored forces, since 1930 - motorized troops, since 1934 - armored troops, since December 1942 - armored and mechanized troops, since 1954 - armored troops, since 1960 - tank troops.

Today, tank brigades and tank battalions of motorized rifle brigades, which are highly resistant to the damaging factors of nuclear weapons, firepower, high mobility and maneuverability, form the basis of tank troops. They are capable of making fullest use of the results of fire (nuclear) engagement of the enemy and achieving the ultimate goals of combat and operations in a short time.

The combat capabilities of tank formations and subunits allow them to conduct active combat operations day and night, at a considerable distance from other troops, to smash the enemy in head-on battles and battles, to overcome vast zones of radioactive contamination on the move, to force water barriers, and also to quickly create a solid defense and successfully resist the advance of superior enemy forces.

Further development and enhancement of the combat capabilities of tank troops is carried out mainly by equipping them with more advanced types of tanks, which optimally combine such important combat properties as high firepower, maneuverability and reliable protection.

At present, the tank units and formations of the Russian Armed Forces are armed with T-72, T-80, T-90 tanks and their modernized models. The T-14 tank on the Armata platform will go into service with the tank troops.
