Knitting with hollow elastic. Warm knitted hat for the winter with double elastic on circular knitting needles

Hollow double elastic band - a technique for knitting an elastic band that every self-respecting needlewoman, even a beginner, should have. Therefore, today we will talk about such a common technique as knitting a double hollow elastic band with knitting needles.

The peculiarity of this technique is that to complete it you need to cast on the number of loops, doubled, since the work will be done from two layers of fabrics knitted using the stockinette stitch technique. Only these canvases are connected to each other by a typesetting edge. The knit stitches are on the outside and the purl stitches are on the inside. The canvases are adjacent to each other as if back to back.

Also, a feature of this technique is that the knitting needles need to be chosen with a number less than for knitting a plain stockinette stitch.

A characteristic advantage of this technique is that you can save a lot of time. And why? This is because when describing many models where a double elastic band is used, it is described differently, as a plain front fabric folded in half. If you knit a double fabric, it will take more time and effort. That’s why our “double hollow elastic” technique solves this problem instantly.

Pattern characteristics:

  • Despite the fact that the technique is made of two canvases, it does not look too voluminous or cumbersome.
  • A cast-on edge made using this technique has good elasticity.
  • Products knitted with double elastic have good elasticity and at the same time do not deform.
  • Due to the fact that the double hollow elastic band is knitted from two fabrics, it looks moderately voluminous and fluffy.
  • The disadvantage of this technique is that the product will require a larger amount of yarn than, for example, a regular elastic band.

What to knit with this technique:

  • This type of elastic should be applied to the edges of skirts, panties, necklines, stockings, socks, and so on. All edges can be made with double hollow elastic.
  • Often, double hollow elastic is used to knit double warm hats. Double hats start with double hollow ribbed knits and then move to double ply blanket knits on multiple knitting needles.

Conclusion: this double hollow elastic technique can be used to make edges in any knitted items. It is most advantageous to use it for knitting elastic for panties and skirts, since you can insert a regular elastic band into it for elasticity.

Double elastic knitting pattern with description

Method one:

For the sample, on knitting needles number two and a half, cast on forty stitches in a simple way.

First row: We knit using the usual and long-familiar method of a regular simple elastic band one to one - one simple front and one regular purl loop. Do not forget that we remove the first edge loop in the sample, and we knit the last loop in the row with a purl simple loop.

Second row: We remove the first loop, knit the next loop with a regular knit stitch, then move the loop from the left knitting needle to the right one and skip the working thread before work. We knit a simple knit stitch again and again move the loop from the left loop to the right loop, pulling the working thread in front of the loop. We knit this way until the end of the row, and knit the last loop with a knit stitch.

We knit the third and subsequent rows similarly to the second.

The second method of knitting a double hollow elastic band:

For a ten-centimeter long sample, use number two and a half needles to cast on forty stitches using the Italian method.

Considering that the Italian method of casting is similar to a one-to-one elastic band, we begin the first row by knitting directly a double hollow elastic band without lyrical digressions.

First row: remove the first loop without knitting. We knit the second loop with a knitted simple loop, we move the next loop from the left knitting needle to the right one and again leave the working thread before work. Then we repeat everything until the end of the row and perform the last edge loop with a knit stitch.

It's all so simple and easy!

And women's. Among all the DIY knitting projects, you can find many different types of ribbed pattern in the collection.

Self-knitted elastic bands can differ not only in appearance, but also in the way they are knitted. If you want the product to have a neat appearance, then you should use knitting needles that are either 1.5 larger in diameter than the thread, or have exactly the same diameter. Among the most popular, we can list the following:

  1. simple 1x1, 2x2 and so on elastic band;
  2. double;
  3. English;
  4. French;
  5. Polish.

How to knit a simple elastic band

How to knit a simple elastic band with knitting needles

A simple elastic band includes different combinations of basic ones - front and back. The fabric stretches well and is elastic, thanks to this elastic band, knitted by hand. This type of elastic is usually used when you want the fabric to fit tightly. For example, a turtleneck, or its individual parts: collar, hem, cuff or neckline.

Simple elastic bands are usually designated as 1x2 or 2x2, here the first number means the number of knit stitches, and the second number means purl stitches in the report. Therefore, you can make an elastic band with knitting needles from any combination of cast-on stitches. But do not forget to maintain the proportions, thanks to which the canvas remains elastic. Here are several options for this pattern:

  1. elastic band 1x1. In the front rows there is the following sequence of stitches: front and back. All knit stitches must be knitted over the purl stitches, and the purl stitches over the knit stitches.
  2. elastic band 2x2. The loops and their number should be a multiple of two and plus 2 edge loops. Two knits and two purls are knitted in all odd rows, but in even rows, in order to follow the pattern, you need to purl over the knit ones, as with a 1x1 rib.
  3. elastic band 2x1. Divide the number of this elastic band by three and add 2 loops to the edge loops:
  • 1r. Knit two knit stitches to the end of the row, then purl one.
  • 2p is knitted throughout the entire row: purl 1, knit two.
  • 3 rub. here the knitting is repeated from the first row.

Before you start knitting a fabric with a simple elastic band yourself according to the pattern, you need to pay attention to the size of the fabric itself. For example, if the product is large, then a 4x4 elastic band is suitable for it. also pay attention to the diagram of the main drawing, because there must be harmony in the canvas and everything must be combined.

How to knit an English rib

How to knit an elastic band with knitting needles

Representatives of the English pattern consider it the most popular. In another way, this pattern is also called pearl. This DIY English elastic band, thanks to its soft texture and embossed appearance, can be used in hats, jumpers, scarves and other voluminous items. It is not recommended to use English elastic to knit cuffs and edges of the product. Because this pattern makes the fabric soft and elastic. Using yarn over loops and main loops you can make an English elastic band. English elastic band 1x1 is made in this way:

  • cast on an odd number of stitches and knit the first row according to the report like this: one yarn over, one loop that was removed unknitted, then throw the working thread behind the fabric and knit one knit stitch
  • 2 rub. Yarn over, remove one loop unknitted, knit 2 loops with one knit stitch.
  • 3 rub. Knit 2 loops with one knit stitch, yarn over, throw over one loop without knitting.

Unlike a simple fabric, you need to close the loops of an English elastic band differently. If you want to see a smooth and beautiful edge, you must first make a preparatory row. To do this you need to do:

  • knit the product according to the same pattern, where a loop unknitted is thrown onto the right knitting needle. The double crochet stitch from the previous row must be knitted with one knit stitch. All this must be done before the end of the row.
  • then close the loops on the product as you usually do.

The sequence of stitches in a 1x1 English rib, which will be knitted in the round:

  • 1r. knit, yarn over, loop not knitted
  • 2p. Yarn over, loop not knitted, purl
  • 3 rub. 2 loops together, not knitted loop

English 2x2 elastic will also look great. Only for this elastic band you need to knit a number of loops that are divisible by 4, and add 2 edge loops to them:

How to knit an elastic band with knitting needles diagram

  • 1r. goes as for a regular elastic band with the sequence - 2 knits and 2 purls. The last 2 stitches in the row must be knitted.
  • 2 rub. repeat: yarn over, slip the next two stitches onto the right needle without knitting, knit 2. Yarn over at the end of the row and slip the last 2 stitches unknitted.
  • 3 rub. From the previous row, knit a yarn over and a loop together, then one knit yarn over and leave 2 loops unknitted. Knit the penultimate stitch at the end of the row with a knit yarn over, and the last stitch goes with a knit yarn over.
  • 4r. here everything goes according to the report: yarn over, two untied loops, the next one is knitted with a knit stitch, then a knit stitch. Finish the row with one yarn over and two undone yarn overs.
  • then the principle is repeated from the third row, and the knitting goes to the desired size.

How to knit double rib with knitting needles

Double elastic is usually used to make the fabric more dense. For example, for (tops), cuffs, scarves, etc., thanks to this elastic band, the product keeps its shape longer. Beginners in this business can cope just as well with this knitting on their own as experienced knitters.

  • The stitches you cast on for the rib should be even and divisible by 4, plus 2 more edge stitches.
  • The first row is made according to the following pattern: the front one, knitted behind the front wall, re-slip one loop without knitting, move the working thread in front of the fabric and knit until the end of the row.
  • 2 rub. purl one, remove one loop without knitting, throw the working thread over the product.
  • in the third and remaining rows you need to repeat knitting from the first row.

Using the video below, you can see a more clear example and see the diagrams:

Hollow or double elastic for scarves or belts is best done in circular knitting, using special knitting needles. But then all the rows must be done according to the same pattern: knit stitch, one not knitted, retaken.

How to knit a Polish rib with knitting needles

Polish gum pattern

If you want to make a scarf-collar or snood, or children's things, then a Polish elastic band will come to your aid. It has a more airy and loose structure. There are two ways to knit a Polish rib:

  1. The number of loops you knit for the elastic should be divided by four and add two more edge stitches. Odd stitches should be knitted like this: two knit stitches, two purl stitches. In even rows you need to do: purl one and repeat: knit 2 and purl 2. The last stitch of the row is knitted.
  2. For the second knitting method, you also need to take loops, the number of which is divided by 4, and add two edge loops to them. The sequence for all knit rows is: one knit stitch, one purl stitch, 2 knit stitches. The purl rows are knitted: one purl loop and three knit stitches.

In the following video you can see how to knit a Polish elastic band:

How to knit French rib with knitting needles

For French elastic, the number of loops should be divided by 4, then you need to add 2 loops for the edge loops. The elastic band should be knitted in the following alternating stitches:

  • 1r. alternate two purls and two knits behind the back wall.
  • 2 rub. repeat the sequence: one purl, two knits behind the back wall and one purl.
  • subsequent rows must be knitted from the first.

French gum

There is another way you can create this elastic band:

  • the number of cast-on loops should be divided by 3 and add three more loops for symmetry and edge loops.
  • in all odd rows there is a sequence: purl one, then remove one stitch without knitting, then knit the next loop behind the back wall, return the removed loop to the knitting needle and knit behind the back wall with a front loop. The last stitch of the row must be made purl.
  • even rows are done like this: sequence 1 is knit, re-slip the unknitted loop, then purl, return the unknitted loop to the left knitting needle and make it a purl. Finish the front row.

Since there are a lot of models themselves, it is necessary to look at the following nuances before choosing the right elastic band:

  • the main pattern of the fabric and its appearance must correspond to the density and pattern of the selected elastic band
  • Not all types of elastic bands are used in circular knitting. After all, some have a double-sided pattern. This includes English and French 2x2 elastic bands.

In appearance, the fabric, which is knitted with a double elastic band, resembles a pipe. Therefore, this type of elastic is often called tubular or hollow. This name comes from the similarity of the canvas to a tube.

Double rib resembles a single piece of fabric, which is often used for knitting cuffs. But the appearance of the loops is more reminiscent of a stocking stitch pattern than a simple elastic band. Double elastic is often used for knitting shoulder straps and straps. It is difficult to find a more suitable pattern if you need to knit a pocket flap or a belt.

Experienced knitters often have in their arsenal so-called “dolls” for tying cords. Beginners may not have such a device, so in this case a double elastic band will be necessary.

Double or hollow elastic can sometimes be used to reduce loops when moving from one part of the fabric to another. It is often used when transitioning from the main fabric to the sleeve, for example, in the process of knitting a sweater or pullover.

Also, one cannot help but recall the double elastic band in the process of knitting the fabric, which was cast on using the Italian method. Yarn over using the Italian method is often used when knitting necklines and cuffs, especially those that should not stretch or deform too much.

Main features of double rib knitting

To make it clearer for beginners, you need to immediately clarify that a hollow elastic band is a fabric that is knitted with stockinette stitch and connected with a cast-on edge. The wrong side is directed inside the fabric.

If you don’t know how many stitches are required, then it’s better to spend time and knit a control sample based on the front stitch. When you get the exact number of loops, you need to multiply them by two, since the fabric will be double. For example, if a 10 cm long stockinette fabric consists of 16 loops, then a fabric of the same length, but with double elastic, will consist of 32 loops (16*2).

To ensure that the fabric knitted with a double elastic band does not stretch during wear, it must be knitted with knitting needles 1 size smaller than for stockinette stitch.

It is worth remembering that when casting on loops for a double elastic band, you must always ensure that the number of cast-on loops is a multiple of four, and it must also be even. In addition, two edge loops must be added to the counted quantity.

A double elastic band can consist of both front and back loops, so you need to monitor the symmetry of the fabric and its edge. To prevent the fabric from “walking,” each row must be completed with a purl loop. The first stitch of the next row should be left and removed without knitting. In simple terms, to knit one row of double rib, you need two approaches. The first is knitting the front wall of the loops, and the second is the back. All that remains is to choose the method of closing the loops, because the method of closing the loops also depends on the different purposes of the fabric.

For those who find it more convenient to look at diagrams, this one can be considered the most classic:

Learning to knit a classic hollow rib 1x1

The most basic row, which will set the pattern for the entire canvas, can be called the first. To knit 1 row, you need to knit: 1 knit stitch, remove 1 loop according to the purl loop principle so that the thread is in front of the left knitting needle, 1 knit loop, alternating until the end of the cast-on row.

The second row will be knitted similarly to the first, but at the same time, above the front loop, which is located in the 1st row, you need to remove the loop, and at the place where the front loop was knitted, there will be a removal in the second. Repeat alternating rows until the desired length is reached.

To make it clearer, you can repeat knitting and removing loops according to the photo.

The photo shows the basic principle of knitting double elastic. One loop is knitted as a knit stitch, the next one is removed. In this case, the yarn should be in front of the removed loop, the broach should remain inside the fabric. Repeat until the end of the row until you run out of stitches.

To make the fabric more even, it is advisable to use an Italian set of loops. In practice it should look like this. The Italian method of yarn over involves the use of an auxiliary thread. With this method of casting on rows 1 and 2, it is better to knit rows with thin knitting needles. After knitting a couple of rows, the auxiliary thread can be removed.

How to knit double elastic in the round?

First method

The principle of knitting such an elastic band will be a little complicated, since in this option you need to carefully monitor the type of row. The first row of this knitting should be alternated between a knit stitch and a purl loop. Second row: knit 1, slip 2 (thread should be in front of the left needle), knit 1, slip 1 (thread should be in front of the left needle). Repeat alternating from the first row to the end.

Second method

It is designed to alternate even and odd rows. Therefore, the first row is knitted like this:

one front loop, slip one (thread should be in front of the front wall of the loop), alternating until the end of the row.

The second row is a little more difficult to knit. The loop that was removed should be knitted purlwise, the next loop should be removed (the thread should be behind the back wall of the loop), alternating until the end of the row.

In order not to confuse the type of row, even rows can be marked with a different thread.

Third method

In this method, it is necessary to strictly count the number of loops cast on; it must be even. Row 1 must be knitted according to the principle of 1x1 elastic bands - one front loop and one removed according to the principle of a purl loop. Those loops that were knitted need to be distributed onto one knitting needle. Throw the loops that were removed onto the second knitting needle, with the thread in front of the front wall of the loop. Next, it remains to knit the outer side of the double elastic band in a circle. For these loops, take one ball of thread. To knit the inside of the fabric, you need to take a second ball, and knitting should take place in turning rows.

If you do not want to divide the yarn into two balls, then you can knit different sides alternately, but you may not get holes. Sometimes knitted tubes of double elastic are used for drawstrings on children's items, for example, pants, rompers, and overalls.

How to make the transition from a basic canvas to a double elastic band?

Very often the double elastic band is located in the middle or at the end of the main fabric. This could be a belt on a dress or skirt, the neck of a top or sweater. In order for the product to have a neat appearance, its remaining loops are sometimes knitted with a double elastic band. In the presented photo you can see how the loops at the neck of the top are closed with an elastic band.

In the process of transitioning from a simple fabric to a double elastic band, from each loop of the main fabric you need to knit 1 front and 1 purl loop. To make the work neat, the knitting needles should be 1-2 sizes smaller than those used to knit the main fabric.

It happens that the tube elastic does not finish the canvas, but is only its intermediate element. After the hollow elastic band, the main fabric continues. For this process, you again need to change the knitting needles to thicker ones. The number of loops again needs to be reduced by 2 times. To do this, two double elastic loops need to be knitted as one. One of these loops will be from the front wall of the elastic, and the second will be from the back.

The final closure of the double elastic band is easiest done with a regular needle. The process resembles the horizontal connection of two canvases. In practice, this turns out to be quite simple, just connect the front and back walls of each loop.

When the back wall is stitched, the edge of the fabric becomes very elastic. This must be taken into account when knitting cuffs and necklines. To ensure that the edge of the fabric knitted with a double elastic band is as tight as possible, the loops on both sides must be sewn simultaneously, in one go.

Subtleties of Italian stitch knitting

It is worth immediately noting that Italian knitting of loops can be designed both for a tight edge of the fabric and for an elastic one. The operating principle is slightly different, so beginners will have to be patient. The tight edge is often used for cuffs and sleeves, while the elastic edge most often decorates the neck of sweaters, various edgings on hats, etc.

To make it easier for beginners to master the differences between different types of edges, you can take note of simple design schemes for such a canvas. It’s easier and clearer to first master turning rows, and then you can start knitting in the round.

The principle of knitting a turn row with an elastic edge

To get a loose edge of the fabric, you need to remember the following alternation of rows.

The first row involves knitting all the knit stitches behind the back wall of the loop, while the purl stitches must be removed and left unknitted. The entire first row of thread should be placed in front of the fabric.

The second row differs from the first in that all the front stitches are knitted behind the front wall. Purl ones also need to be removed unknitted. The thread also remains in front of the canvas. Repeat alternation.

The principle of knitting a turning row with a hard edge

The method of this knitting is designed so that only in row 1 the knit stitches should be knitted through the back side of the loop, in all other rows the knit stitches should be knitted through the front. In practice it should look like this:

first row - we knit all the front loops behind the back wall, simply remove the purl loops and leave them unknitted;

the second and subsequent rows in the fabric - we knit all the front loops behind the front wall, simply remove the purl loops and leave them unknitted. The thread should be in front of the fabric in each row.

The principle of knitting an elastic edge in circular knitting

This method also implies that in the first and second rows, keep the thread in front of the fabric. First row - knit all the front stitches through the back wall of the loops, simply remove all the purl loops and leave them unknitted.

Second row - you need to knit all the purl stitches, just remove the knit stitches and leave them unknitted. Alternate to the desired canvas height.

The principle of knitting a hard edge for circular knitting needles

This method can be called one of the most difficult, so for beginners it is better to write down the diagram and sequence on a separate piece of paper so as not to confuse the rows.
The first row is to knit the front loops along the back wall, simply remove the purl loops without knitting. In this case, the thread should be in front of the canvas.

Second row - we knit all the purl loops, remove the knit stitches and do not knit them, keep the thread at work.

Third row - knit the front loops behind the front wall, remove the purl loops and do not knit them, keep the thread in front of the fabric.

Fourth row - we knit all the purl loops, remove the knit stitches and do not knit them, keep the thread at work.

Most experienced craftswomen, not to mention just beginners, may be shocked by the so-called term “tubular elastic.” What is it?

In fact, there is nothing supernatural about this name. Its other common names are double elastic or hollow.

Double elastic is used to knit the edges of finished products. These include hats, gloves, vests, sweaters, scarves and much more. It’s simply impossible to list absolutely everything. This elastic band looks like fabric folded in half. In order not to sew or knit a long product by hand to create a cavity, it is necessary to use this method of knitting a hollow elastic band. An ordinary underwear elastic is inserted into this cavity without much effort and tightens the knitting. In addition, instead of inserting an elastic band, it is quite acceptable to knit simultaneously with an elastic thread, which is chosen to match the color of the yarn. I think every person interested in needlework will want to know how to knit a double elastic band correctly and with minimal time.

Necessary materials

The most necessary items for knitting will be the following items:

  • Straight knitting needles;
  • Circular knitting needles;
  • Threads.

How to knit double rib?

Before you start, try to practice, because there is a chance that you may not succeed right away. You also need to remember that to knit such an elastic band, you need to cast on twice as many loops on the knitting needles. Thus, if the main fabric of the product requires 20 loops, then to knit an elastic band you need to cast on 40. After this, you can see that the fabric itself will consist of 20 loops. It would make sense if the number of stitches you have to cast on was even. To make the fabric easier to knit, it is advisable to knit the first two rows if possible.

So, we cast on 40 initial stitches. You need to start knitting the first row like this: remove the edge loop, 1 knit stitch, then remove the next loop on another knitting needle, like a purl, and the working thread remains in front, then again 1 knit stitch, remove 1 loop. According to this pattern, you need to continue knitting until the end of the row.

The important point is that the working thread must be constantly between the front and removed loops. Otherwise, a hollow elastic band will not work. We knit the second row like this: we remove the edge loop, we remove the front loop of the previous row onto a knitting needle (working thread in front), we knit the removed loop of the previous row with a front loop. After you have knitted 11-12 rows in this way, you should have a hollow elastic band.

If the hollow elastic band on the product is knitted after the main fabric of the product, then this will require doubling the number of loops. You can connect them in several ways:

pull a new loop through one knitted loop;

Behind each knitted loop you need to make a yarn over. It will be knitted in the next row with a knit loop.

Thus, the elastic band is knitted to the required width. Subsequently, when moving to the main fabric, it is necessary to knit one row with facial loops, while two facial loops must be knitted together. If the elastic is located at the end of the product and after knitting the main fabric, then the loops that were knitted before should be closed.

If the elastic is on the belt, then when moving to knitting the elastic, the loops should be increased, and when moving to knitting the main fabric, reduced. Then the fabric must be knitted based on the pattern.

This is what a hollow elastic band looks like if you remove the knitting needles when knitting:

Double elastic knitting needles: brief description

Double or tubular elastic on knitting needles is also very easy to make. The first two rows are knitted with a 1x1 elastic band, and in the subsequent rows we knit only the front loops, removing the purl ones without knitting. Its main difference from all other types of elastic bands is the formation of a cavity between the two walls of the elastic band, into which you can insert, if necessary, a denser textile elastic band, tape, lace and other elements.

Double elastic band pattern

1st row: 1 edge loop, * 1 knit stitch, 1 purl loop *, 1 edge loop;

2nd row: 1 edge loop, * 1 knit stitch, 1 purl loop *, 1 edge loop;

3rd row: 1 edge loop,* 1 knit stitch, slip 1 purl loop without knitting*, 1 edge loop;

4th row: repeat from the third row.

The last row is knitted like the first, or you need to knit and purl the stitch together, depending on the product.

Double elastic on circular knitting needles

When knitting double rib on circular knitting needles, it is very important to control where the even and odd rows are. To make this task completely easier, you need to mark the beginning of the row with a bright thread, and then you definitely won’t go astray from the pattern. The pattern for a hollow elastic band on circular knitting needles is slightly different from the pattern for knitting the same elastic band on regular knitting needles.

1st row: knit with a 1x1 elastic band, that is, 1 knit stitch, 1 purl loop;

2nd row: knit 1, and vice versa remove 1 purl loop, while the thread itself will remain in front of the removed loop;

3rd row: knit 1 purl loop (which was removed in that row), and remove 1 knit loop, while the thread should be behind the loop, that is, the thread always remains inside the elastic cavity.

To further transition from double elastic to the main fabric, you will need to reduce the number of loops by half and replace the knitting needles with a larger diameter. In order to reduce the number of loops, it is usually customary to knit a front and back loop together.

In the case when the double elastic band is a continuation of the main fabric, then the number of loops should, on the contrary, be doubled. To do this, basically, take each loop of the main fabric and knit 2 loops from it. At the same time, they switch to knitting needles of a smaller diameter.

The end result of a hollow rib when knitting in the round will depend entirely on what kind of edge you would like to achieve. If a sufficiently hard and rough edge is required, then the hinges are closed in the usual way. That is, 1 loop is closed at the same time from each wall of the hollow elastic band.

In order to obtain an elastic edge, the loops must be connected with a needle, making a horizontal knitted seam. Below you can see a sample knitted on circular knitting needles:

Video selection on the topic

This section presents video materials on knitting double elastic on straight knitting needles and on circular knitting needles. Here you can familiarize yourself with them. We hope that the video selection we offer will be an excellent visual aid for you. Enjoy watching!

Knitting is a fascinating activity that brings joy. After all, how nice it is to wear things that you have knitted yourself, or to give them to your family and friends. In order for knitted items to serve for a long time, it is necessary to understand what type of knitting structure is most suitable for the selected product. Experienced needlewomen know how important it is to correctly design, for example, sleeve cuffs so that they look neat and do not stretch during the first wash. Very often, double elastic is used in finishing, or, as it is also called, hollow. She looks like seamless fabric, folded in half, in the form of a hollow tube. Very effective for knitting collars, cuffs, sweaters, hats and more.

For example, it is great for, especially in combination with. You can use this spectacular knitting in a knitting pattern for a fashionable beanie hat. There is nothing complicated in this pattern, you just need to carefully watch the loops - as in any pattern. To understand double rib knitting, you need to carefully study the diagrams and descriptions - and then everything will work out.

How to knit double rib correctly

For such a pattern, you need to cast on twice as many loops as for a regular one. This results in a stockinette stitch on the outside and a purl stitch on the inside. Only the knitting needles need to be chosen a number smaller than with regular satin stitch. Any item can be knitted in the round.

In order for such a pattern to turn out beautiful and even, it doesn’t hurt to knit a test sample.

To do this, we cast on 40 loops (there must be an even number of them). By the way, in order for the edge of the canvas to be as neat as possible, it is better to use the Italian method.

Italian typesetting edge

For beginners, knitting with a double elastic band is easier to do according to the following pattern:

Rapport 1 knit, 1 purl, and in the second row we knit the knits with knits, and remove the purls, having a thread before work. And thus we knit the desired length of fabric.

If you need to add loops, you can do this in two ways: you can simply yarn over in the right places and knit it in the next row, or you can pull a new one through the knitted loop.

You can close the row in the usual way, but in order to make the edge more elastic, we recommend a knitted seam, which is done using the Italian method.

The pattern for knitting a double elastic band with knitting needles in the round is somewhat different from regular knitting.

In this case Be sure to put a marker at the beginning of the row– mark with a bright thread so as not to go astray from the diagram.

In the first row we knit according to the usual pattern, that is: rapport 1 knit, 1 purl, in the second row we knit the knits with knits, remove the purls, having a thread before work. In the third row we knit the purl one (which was removed in the previous row), and remove the front one, keeping the thread at work. And then we knit, repeating the pattern from the second row.

This hat never goes out of style. It is warm, soft, comfortable. Color, size and length can be chosen at your own discretion. The proposed option for size 58-60 is knitted with knitting needles No. 3.5 and 4 from Super MAGIC Excellence yarn 49% wool, 51% acrylic 100 g / 228 m. These hats are called two-layer hats.

You can knit a similar model using or use it, but it will not be as warm. If you wish, you can use a “braid knitting pattern” in this hat.

We cast on 160 loops, knit 1 row according to the 1x1 pattern (front, back). If you want the edge to be tighter, you can immediately knit with a hollow elastic band.

Then we switch to needles No. 4 and knit 18 cm according to the double elastic pattern with knitting needles, which is suitable for a hat.

In this case, there were 96 rows. We knit the next row with knit stitches on the outside, knitting 2 loops together with double thread.

We knit the remaining 80 loops in stocking stitch in 2 threads with 3.5 knitting needles. In each row you need to make 6 decreases - on the face there are 2 loops together with the front one, on the wrong side - 2 loops together with the purl one. Knit approximately 5 cm. We tighten all the remaining loops and carefully sew the back seam.
