Do-it-yourself lambrequins with patterns for. Making an openwork lambrequin

Hello dear readers of our site!

Today I will tell and show by personal example how to sew the simplest, simplest lambrequin with my own hands.
It will look like a simple strip of fabric, planted on a curtain tape, and well gathered, even in excess, which, according to my ideas, however, should not spoil the overall look, since we will be sewing from a light fabric that is quite patient with character errors.

You can hang such a lambrequin anywhere, but probably not in the living room or in the office.
In your case, it all depends on the fabric, its color and texture. If the fabric is beautiful, and most importantly, suitable for the room, complementing or emphasizing the interior, or even playing the role of a color spot, the style in this case may not play an important role, and you can sew a lambrequin in the form of a strip on the curtain tape with your own hands.

Since I use a colorful fabric - in this case, the complexity of the cut becomes even more contraindicated.
My motley fabric was a forgotten curtain made of a voile, 3 m wide. I just urgently needed simple temporary curtains for the children's room, which will change its location soon after the repair. In general, you need to sew a set of two new ones with a simple lambrequin from an old curtain.

Well, let's get started.
The window before it looks like this:

Since the window faces north, the sun does not peek in here. And at the same time, it pleases with a magnificent view of a small park. I want to leave the window as open as possible, I imagine how the youngest child, lying in a crib, will look at the stars in the night sky, so I decide to frame it minimally on the sides and top.

For a lambrequin from the ceiling to the top of the window, I need 60 cm of fabric 3 meters wide, how to cut them off from a piece of curtain 2.5 * 3 meters?
The curtain height of 3 m must be left, from ceiling to floor, in order to ennoble the open left corner by the window, not blocked by furniture. Yes, and on the right side you need to close the radiator with a curtain.
Therefore, the only option is to cut off the side.
In theory, this is not possible, because:

  1. The product will not be sewn along the equity line;
  2. The rhythmic pattern on the fabric will be turned in the other direction. Let's see if we can put up with all this:
    1. We are not afraid of the shared line, since we will not use the lambrequin intensively in wear and daily washing. It will simply hang over the window, sometimes being erased as it gets dirty;
    2. As for the pattern, it is also acceptable, because the veil fabric is light, the pattern is not bright, and you can hide it in a rich assembly or in folds, which we will do.

    Therefore, without any hesitation, I cut off the strip I need 60 cm wide on the side of the curtain:

    We sew fabrics of curtains

    First, I proceed to the processing of the curtain panels - the sides, and the top, which will be attached to the ceiling cornice. Since this is a used curtain, it has everything you need on the bottom and top. Already sewn curtain tape with hooks:

    From the bottom, the canvas has a wonderful processing - a sewn-in cord for weighting:

    Thanks to the weighting, the curtain hangs really beautifully, flexible wide waves are formed:

    It remains only to process the side seams. How to do it with your own hands, with such a thin fabric, so that it is neat, and at the same time not completely exhausted?

    I will share my experience of beautiful edge processing. It will turn out such a thin hem, 5 mm wide:

    In fact, everything is very simple and clever. You need to buy a foot for processing the edge of the fabric. Of course, they are not sold in every sewing store, but still I strongly recommend purchasing at least a pair of specific paws that will often be used in everyday life. With such a device, sewing any bedding, curtains, processing any edge on your own is a trifle, and the work looks very worthy.

    Here is this wonderful foot for jewelry cutting of the edge of the fabric:

    Let's put it in place of the standard foot, and process the side seams. From above, the part on which the curtain tape is sewn - just fold it over 1 time, and attach it, as on a regular foot:

    And now the fun begins. We wrap the fabric in the funnel of the foot so that we get an unfinished tube:

    We sew the folded segment, and fold it again. It is convenient to correct the fabric in this way every 10-15 cm. At first, it may not work out very well, it is worth practicing on a piece of fabric. But the result is always pleasing:

    From below, reaching the edge of the curtain, the seam can be fixed directly on the typewriter so that it does not diverge. To do this, you can press the reverse lever and sew a little back, 3-4 cm is enough. Now you can simply cut the threads and process the second canvas in the same way.
    We put up a curtain on the window:

    We evaluate whether a lambrequin is needed here. In my opinion it is necessary. It would be nice to sew a tulle, but I want to leave the window open - so we sew a lambrequin for sure.

    Tailoring of a lambrequin

    I put a piece of fabric on the window to choose the right height. As an artist, I step back and evaluate the painting in perspective. It turns out that 60 cm is a bit too much. 30 cm is enough, which is exactly half as much. It is very comfortable! Then I’ll just cut the strip in half, and sew the two halves, thereby lengthening the lambrequin, which will allow it to gather more strongly, or even make folds!

    Lambrequin with pleats

    I love these even folds on the lambrequins, and maybe this time it's better to make folds? You need to check if there is enough fabric.
    To form beautiful folds, going one after another, you need 3 times more fabric. The width of my lambrequin should be 2.20 m. This means that the canvas should be 2.20 * 3 = 6.60 m long. But I don’t have such a length, there are only 5 meters. Ehh, I'll sew folds next time.
    It would be possible to lay folds with indents, for example, 2 cm, and then the fabric would need to be at the rate of 1 * 2.8 meters, but I think that such indents look ugly on a transparent fabric.

    You still have to make a simple lambrequin with a screed, but how to sew a lambrequin with folds with your own hands - read the article on our website.

    Lambrequin on a curtain tape

    I process the bottom of the lambrequin and the side edges with the same hem foot, and go to the store for a curtain tape.

    In the store, my attention is drawn to the curtain tape for the bow pleat:

    With it, you can make such a complex lambrequin:

    But, since the gathering factor for the bow pleat remains the same - 1:3, we buy a simple ribbon for a smaller gathering factor, with a normal assembly.

    For transparent fabrics, you need to buy a special tape made on a grid or on a transparent substrate. Be prepared for the fact that such a tape slides, moves out. If the design of the cornice will hide the area with the curtain tape, then it is better to take a simple, cloth one - it will be much easier to sew it on.

    How to sew curtain tape, steps:

    1. We bend the top of the blank for the lambrequin to a width equal to the width of the curtain tape, plus 1 cm. This margin is needed to hide the hooks that look ugly if the tape is sewn exactly to the edge. The hooks can be successfully hidden with a wide plastic decor that is glued on the outside of the cornice, but there is no such thing on this window - and it is not necessary, so we will close it with an additional assembly along the edge;

    2. We iron the hem with an iron, or independently hold the desired hem while sewing on the tape, it is also convenient to navigate by the marks on the typewriter, maintaining the desired width;

    3. Apply the tape with the right side out. The front side is determined by the presence of loops in the screed strip - just for them we will attach hooks;

    4. We sew the tape on one side, placing the foot on the edge of the tape, and bending the tape on the sides of the lambrequin by 1 cm;

    5. Sew the tape on the other side of the central band of the tie.

    At this time, we make sure that the tape does not warp, otherwise the folds will go crooked. Usually, mesh tapes on a fishing line like to warp, do not allow this.

    For more clarity, how to sew a curtain tape with your own hands, you can watch the video:

    How to hang a pelmet on a curtain tape

    1. First you need to pull the threads with your own hands to the desired width of the lambrequin. You can do this on one side by pulling out the tie threads;
    2. We tie the threads and cut off the excess, or leave it in reserve just in case. (Suddenly you want to change the curtain tape, and this tape in the meantime will wait for new curtains for permanent residence;
    3. Evenly distribute the drapery on the folds;
    4. We install hooks in increments of 10-12 cm;
    5. We hang a lambrequin by hooks to the eaves.

    So, as you can see - everything is very simple, it is quite possible to sew with your own hands at home. Feel free to get to work, learn the basics of sewing on your own, starting with such simple things.

Of course, the hallmark of every living room are curtains and pelmets. Today we will look at popular patterns for sewing beautiful lambrequins with our own hands!

At the entrance to this room, the eye falls on the window, as it is usually the only bright place in the house.

Today, there is a huge variety of decorative curtains and window decor elements.

Tulips are stunning in their splendor. And the lambrequin is one of the irreplaceable decorations of the window opening.

In the 19th century, they decorated not only living rooms and bedrooms, but also the space above the beds. After all, earlier, lambrequins were very artsy.

Now they have a completely different texture and shape. If you want to change the situation in the apartment or in the house, then lambrequins, by the way, are suitable for this.

They did not come up with any accessories for curtains and tulle: from fringe to ruffles. Window decoration has survived to this day and has become almost traditional. Now you rarely see houses without lambrequins and curtains. They give not only grace, but also solemnity in special cases.

Lambrequin is usually called a decorative element, it is located in the upper part of the curtain throughout its entire length and width of the cornice. Lambrequins can decorate the opening of any room.

The material from which this element of decor is made can be completely diverse. Both light and airy, and very heavy, pleated. For example, using openwork fabrics is a difficult task and it is better not to do this.

Lambrequin should decorate not only the interior, but also hide the cornice and visually increase the height of the window. If the scenery is fixed higher with a lambrequin, it is likely that the window will seem much larger than the original one.

You can implement your ideas on creating a lambrequin with the help of our article without difficulty. Here you will find a detailed master class with a description of how to sew lambrequins according to a pattern. It is possible to download ready-made patterns for free.

Unusual combination of colors and shapes

In ancient times, they were used to cover the cornices, now with the help of decorative fabric they create whole masterpieces.

Simple. The name speaks for itself, it can be sewn without much difficulty. A strip of fabric that can be gathered, draped, and attached to a curtain rod. Or just throw it over the cornice in the shape you like.

Soft. It is made from soft tulle fabrics, uniform folds. They are decorated with various elements, ties, jumpers, jabots, swags, cocktails.

The overall composition includes components such as:

  • tie;
  • perekid;
  • jabot;
  • swags;
  • cocktail.

In their manufacture of such components, it is necessary to make the right pattern, for beginners it is advisable to start with simple designs.

Correct calculation, successful composition, and your windows will become unique.

How to choose a view

Before you get started, there are a few things you need to know:

  • What is the lighting in the room, dark or sunny side. For the sunny side, a dense material is suitable, when airy, transparent materials are used when there is little light.
  • It will go in combination or on its own.
  • Room type.
  • The size of the room and the window, as in spacious rooms and on large windows, can be made large, with numerous draperies. What can not be said about small or low, in a small space.
  • What is the height of the ceilings, the size of the product depends on it, such decor visually makes the ceilings lower.
  • What part of the frame will this part of the curtain cover.
  • Pay attention to the color scheme of the room, and what color the curtains will harmoniously combine with.

Perfect for a spacious living room soft, solemn, with a complex composition.

Both independent and simple ones are suitable for kitchen frames.

In the bedroom, you can use simple types, with a small number of folds.

After analyzing all the details and choosing a style, you can proceed to sewing. Let's try to figure out how to sew it with your own hands.

Detailed manufacturing scheme

We will need:

  • curtain fabric;
  • threads;
  • needles;
  • scissors;
  • paper, pencil, if you need a pattern;
  • table;
  • chalk or bar of soap;
  • centimeter;
  • finishing braid, various decorative ornaments.

Simple sewing

One of the easiest variations, perfect for beginners, and no patterns are needed. Especially if you already have a suitable piece of fabric, you can decorate the frame and the doorway of the room for free.

Step by step algorithm:

  1. It is necessary to take a rectangular-shaped matter, equal to the length of the curtain, for a model with folds, a length of 1.5 times more is required.
  2. The bottom of the fabric is hemmed, the sides are processed.
  3. Attachment loops are sewn to the top.

You can hang it on a curtain.

Calculation of the length, width and height of the product

Another simple sewing that does not require patterns is suitable for the windows of the kitchen, bedroom, and also the children's room.

The model is one-piece, draped by hand on the eaves.

You need to know the length of the cornice and the height of the sag.

Note: the length of the sag should not exceed 2.6 parts of the window so that the room does not darken.

Working process:

  1. Need to decide on the size
  2. Fold in half, determine the middle, and
  3. along the edge of the upper part we measure 0.5 of the length of the eaves, and lower the height.
  4. A line is drawn from the top point to the bottom - the line for sewing braid.
  5. To the width of the cornice, in the upper part of the fabric on both sides, the height of the tail is added.
  6. A perpendicular straight line is drawn down from the upper, extreme point.
  7. Add 2 cm on the sides to rotate.

Along the marked lines curtain fabric cut, the edges are folded. A curtain braid is sewn to the upper part of the edge, along the length of the cornice and two diagonal lines, after which it is pulled together with cords, along the diagonals.

It turns out a curtain with semicircular folds and side tails.

Tailoring of a rigid type of product

Sewing a rigid curtain with your own hands is not particularly difficult if there is a self-adhesive material, a thermo-bando. You need to decide on the bottom. What shape will it be? The complexity of such designs depends on the pattern and shape of the bottom, as well as decoration.

Detailed calculation of fabric for the manufacture of curtains

Step by step workflow:

  1. Without adding an allowance, use a pattern to make a pattern on a thermo-gang, and carefully cut it out.
  2. Redraw the same element on the canvas, with the addition of an allowance.
  3. With the help of an iron, or a steam generator, starting from the center, moving in a circular motion to the edge, the canvas and self-adhesive or special material are glued together. It is worth paying attention to the fact that the fabric sticks evenly, without distortions, and the pattern is not disturbed.
  4. The edges are hemmed or processed with braid. The best option is to process with an oblique inlay.
  5. An adhesive tape is glued on the back side, with an indent of two cm. If everything is done correctly, the curtain is ready.

This type of product can be sewn independently and use for living room, as well as for children's and kitchen windows, as it does not have folds where dust usually accumulates.

The openwork version at home is difficult to do, as it provides for a special laser cut. But if you still want to make such beauty yourself, you need to be patient.

Base material, preferably dense.

  • thermo - bando
  • decorated cords

First you need to find the necessary picture, make a template and transfer it all.

A wonderful manifestation of imagination, handmade, which is sure to please with its result.

However, do not forget that the decor should be in harmony with the entire design of the curtains, do not overdo it with decorations, a pile of various details looks tasteless.

Windows in the house are an important element. Thanks to them, natural sunlight enters the home. But any window can be an interesting interior element, if you arrange it correctly and beautifully. Curtains, blinds, tulle curtains, as well as lambrequins can radically change the appearance of a window opening. Making lambrequins with your own hands is a complex but fascinating process.

What is a lambrequin

The classic version of a lambrequin is a decorative drapery at the top of the opening.

Lambrequin is a decorative element used to decorate windows and complement any curtains or be an independent decoration. It can be used with curtains, curtains, tulle, etc. This detail will give the curtains elegance and originality. And the more complex it looks, the more interesting and unique the curtains themselves look.

On a note! Lambrequins as decorative elements appeared in the Middle Ages. The very first versions were made of wood. Now they are mostly made of cloth. Initially, a wooden structure was used to hide the cornices. Now this element is just a decoration, although in some cases it still helps to hide the distance between the ceiling and the folds of the curtains.

Lambrequins are in demand, and therefore they can simply be bought at the store. But, if you follow the instructions, sewing them yourself can be quite easy.

Today, original elements in the design of curtains can be found not only in the living room.

Kinds

The cost of the chosen model will depend on the complexity of manufacturing and the fabric used. Each type has its own flair.

Soft

This type of window decoration is made of fabric. To create its appearance and shape, that is, to drape it, various ribbons, bows and other devices help. As a rule, light, flowing and delicate fabrics are used for this. In turn, soft lambrequins can have several different decorative elements.

Soft lambrequins are widespread in interiors

jabot

This form of decorative element for decorating a window is also called de jabot or jabot. The side decorative element is a small cut with a beveled bottom edge and a certain drapery. It turns out a kind of cascade of fabric, which is able to perfectly decorate the windows. Often, a jabot or jabot is combined with another decorative element - swags.

On a note! Jabot is a word that came into the Russian language from France.

For soft lambrequins, it is better to use easily draped fabrics.

Tie

A tie in its shape and structure is close to a jabot. It is also a vertical folded element, but draped in a spiral - the folds are laid one on top of the other. Compared to de jabot, it is quite narrow. The element is able to give the curtains and the window as a whole a solemn look.

Delicately laid folds of a tie will decorate the composition of the curtains

A tie can be used between swags

Bell

Another interesting element that effectively complements the lambrequin is a bell. For some options for curtains, it is completely irreplaceable. Its pattern has smooth curves. Often the bell is sewn on the lining. This is a great option to use up the leftover fabrics formed after sewing curtains.

The main function of a lambrequin is to decorate the interior

Chiffon bell looks gentle

coquilla

This is another elegant detail. It resembles a frill, but has symmetrical cascades and bevels on both sides. The chill mold can be both classic and cut along the oblique, its folds are vertical. This detail can often be seen in the design of windows.

Coquille can act as a swag separator

The mold is often placed in the center of the lambrequin

Swag

These are semicircular window decor elements with beautiful drapery. Svagi can be called a classic - they have been known almost since the birth of lambrequins and are very often used today.

Swags can be:

  • symmetrical, which have the same dimensions, height, are located horizontally;
  • asymmetrical;
  • without upper sag - perekida;
  • may have vertical wings - vertical swags.

On a note! Despite the fact that the swag is a classic, it can often be used in the design of rather unusual interiors. It can be found even in the avant-garde.

Svagi look good on a tall narrow window

Rigid

Rigid lambrequin, judging by the name, has a frame. This can be a dublerin base or a plastic construction. It can also be made from very dense fabric. Rigid decorative elements do not have waves, but can be decorated at the bottom with some kind of frame - for example, fringe. The bottom of it can be simple or curly. Despite all the seeming rudeness and simplicity, such an element looks truly luxurious.

Lambrequin should fit not only the curtain, but also the interior of the room

Combined

This variant of a lambrequin can combine soft draperies and rigid structures. For example, it has a dense base, which is decorated with soft fabric elements. As a rule, it is used for interiors in a classic style. There are many options for design and combination of parts.

A tastefully designed window can transform the interior

Openwork (curly)

This is the most difficult version of the lambrequin, and it will not be easy to make it yourself. Such decorative elements have special-shaped patterns cut into the fabric. There are also designs that have a pattern burned out by a laser - they also belong to curly ones. Interestingly, due to this openwork option, you can make a light and pleasant window frame - they do not burden the space, but look luxurious.

Fabrics for making lambrequins

You can make lambrequins from fabrics of various textures. The choice will directly depend on the desired type and shape of the finished product, as well as the style of the interior and the fabric from which the curtains themselves are made. It can be:

  • Taffeta - well cleaned, able to perfectly restrain sunlight. It is easy to combine with a number of other fabrics.
  • Plush and velvet are heavy, rich and noble fabrics. Not suitable for small and modest rooms, they imply chic and luxury. By the way, plush is velvet with a long pile.
  • Satin and silk are capricious, but they look spectacular. It is recommended to use a lining when sewing, as silk, for example, quickly fades in the sun.
  • Natural fabrics such as linen and cotton are quite capricious, but they look good. Can shrink when washed, fade in the sun. It is recommended to use when creating lambrequins for a darkened room.
  • Polyester is the simplest fabric option, as it is easy to care for, unpretentious, and keeps its shape perfectly. Such a fabric dries quickly after washing and does not shrink, does not turn pale.

On a note! Natural fabrics such as linen, cotton, silk are hypoallergenic and completely harmless to health. Those who have problems with the respiratory system or suffer from allergic diseases are advised to opt for these options.

For lambrequins it is better to use curtain fabrics

The fabric for a lambrequin should keep its shape well, not stretch, and easy to wash. And, of course, the choice of material will depend on the purpose of the room. Expensive fabric will not be the best option for creating a lambrequin to decorate a kitchen window. For her, it is better to take a light, inexpensive fabric and make a simple but original decorative element. But in the living room you can use expensive fabrics, and the lambrequins themselves can have many folds.

Making lambrequins with your own hands

Some options can be done independently, while spending a minimum of effort. Others will require long and painstaking work. That is why it is better to immediately decide on the final shape and type of product, and only then start work.

Important! You should not make lush and large lambrequins for a small room.

Consider how to make a decorative element for windows of various types with your own hands.

For sewing a lambrequin, in most cases, a sewing machine is required.

Soft

Soft lambrequins can have a different shape. For some, you will need to make separate decorative elements, while for others it is enough just to purchase the right amount of material and cut it correctly. Consider one of the options for making a soft lambrequin with de jabot and one large sag.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • the cloth;
  • lining fabric (optional)
  • tape for curtains;
  • oblique inlay;
  • scissors, needles, tailor's pins, threads, etc.

It is very important to make the correct calculation of the fabric for the lambrequin

When calculating, it is important to add seam allowances to the height. The fold assembly factor is 2.5 or 3. By this number, you need to multiply the length of the cornice or the required length of any individual element to get the total cost of the fabric. In general, each detail is calculated separately.

Advice! It is best to first depict the final version on paper, then make paper patterns and lay them out the way the lambrequin should be.

  1. A template is created for making de jabot. It is easiest to draw on paper. The base is a triangle.

    In some lambrequins, the one-piece fabric turns into a jabot

  2. Further, a decor element is cut out according to the pattern made, its lower and upper edges are honed with an oblique inlay.

    The jabot is used in simple and complex textile combinations.

  3. Then the dejabot itself is formed. The fabric is laid out on the floor, folds are draped from it. It is important to make sure they are even. For convenience, in the upper part of the future element, the folds are fixed with tailor's pins.

    Facilitates drape details 45 degree cut

  4. The formed folds are sewn along the upper part. A second identical element is made, mirroring the first.
  5. For the convenience of forming the finished product, it is necessary to fix the elements on the curtain. Then make a big sag. Its edges are fixed on previously made and fixed dejabots.

    Some constructions of lambrequins do not require special knowledge and skills.

  6. Excess fabric allowances are trimmed after the product is assembled and fixed. The edges are closed with a piece of fabric. It remains only to stitch the curtain braid and sew the folds.

    Before sewing on a sewing machine, it is better to sweep the prepared parts

How to hang and fasten

A soft lambrequin can be fixed on the curtain with ordinary curtain hooks. The main thing is to sew the tape with loops, then carefully straighten all the folds.

Hard

A rigid lambrequin is a simpler design, because it does not involve the manufacture of complex drapery elements. It is also called bando. Consider how to make this window frame option.

Necessary materials and tools

For the manufacture you need to use:

  • the cloth;
  • a dense base - in this case it is a piece of dublerin;
  • scissors;
  • adhesive tapes 1 cm wide;
  • iron.

Do-it-yourself exclusive models of lambrequins are created

Step-by-step master class on making

  1. First, cut out pieces of fabric and dublerin of the required size. Next, the fabric is laid on top of the dublerin so that it slightly extends beyond the boundaries of the base material.

    Bandeau uses much less fabric than other types of lambrequins.

  2. Gluing the fabric to the dublerin is done by hot steam from the iron. You need to move the iron starting from the edge.
  3. Next, you need to turn the workpiece. The edges are processed with adhesive tape and an iron.

    Adhesive tape is glued along the edge of the dublerin blank

  4. After that, the edges of the fabric should be cut as close as possible to the adhesive tape. The protruding parts of the material are tucked up and, due to the glue, they are glued to the dublerin.

    The protection is removed from the tape and the edge is well impregnated with glue.

  5. For additional processing, it is required to place a different type of adhesive tape along the edge of the product and fix it with an iron.

    For reliability, fix the edges with another adhesive tape

  6. From the remnants of fabric and dublerin, you can make several beautiful decorative three-dimensional elements and fix them on the front side of the lambrequin.

    Doublerin drapes well, so you can make jewelry for a lambrequin from its remains.

How to install and secure

Bando is fixed with Velcro. Previously, the cornice on which the lambrequin will be attached must be degreased. That part of the tape that has hooks is glued to the eaves. The soft part of the tape is glued to the gang. You cannot wash this design, you can only vacuum it.

  • Soft lambrequins, on the contrary, are filled with various decorative elements. Here you can find swags, dejabos, flip-flops, bell ties, etc. The main condition is the choice of fabric: soft, light and flowing texture.
  • Hard lambrequin looks like a window cover. A hard lambrequin is made of dense fabric treated with special substances to maintain durability.

  • No matter how large the distance from the ceiling to the beginning of the window, remember that the lambrequin should cover all this space and even go down a little lower.
  • Richly decorated lambrequins are very beautiful if the curtains hang in a spacious bright room. But for modest spaces, choose modest decorations.
  • When making a lambrequin, it is advised to abandon hard fabrics. Drapery should be light and flowing.
  • When choosing a fabric for lambrequins with a pattern, embroidery or a pattern, try not to overdo it with accents in the design of the window: curtains with such lambrequins should be plain in a calm shade.
  • Remember that the density of fabric for curtains depends on the light in the room. If the windows face the non-sunny side, then use light fabrics of light shades for sewing lambrequins.

If space allows your imagination to roam, then think about how you can arrange swags, pleats, ties and other decorative elements to create a stunning lambrequin!
