Taking measurements

To choose the right size, you need to accurately measure your body parameters.

Height . The child should stand straight next to the wall, without shoes. A measuring tape runs along the wall from the top of the head to the floor.
Chest circumference. The centimeter runs under the arms, along the protrusion of the chest and shoulder blades.
Waist circumference. The tape should not be too tight when wrapping around.
Hip girth . The centimeter passes through the buttocks.

It’s more difficult with children: they grow rapidly, and parents are forced to calculate children’s sizes annually, and at first, monthly. Manufacturers of rompers, bodysuits and baby shirts indicate sizes by age or height on the labels of clothing for children. To purchase a comfortable item for a preschooler or teenager, you need to calculate its exact metric data by taking measurements using a tailor's centimeter.

Variety of size grids

To find out at what height children's size is 36 and at what height it is 40, there is no need to consult the tables. The designations on the labels coincide with the metric values and alternate in 6 units: 26, 32, 38, 44 or 30, 36, 42, 48 cm.

If the baby's height turns out to be between sizes, focus on a larger number. Designations on clothing tags, based on other metrics, correspond to numbers from 18 to 42.

Example: a baby with a maximum height of 58 cm will need a blouse of size 30, and a size 30 with a maximum height of 60 cm.

If the company is conscientious, the sizes of children's T-shirts and jeans stated by it correspond to reality. But GOST documentation is purely advisory in nature.

The metrics in them differ from the generally accepted ones, so when shopping in branded stores, it is worth looking for the Size Chart or Sizing Guide section on the manufacturer’s website. Another difficulty is that not all children develop according to the standard: the first seven-year-old may be thin, the second – broad-shouldered, the third – even a “hero”. Before determining the size of children's clothing, you should find out the child's parameters and compare them with the values entered in the Size Chart or in standardized tables of children's clothing sizes.

How to take measurements

During the measurement process, the young fashionista must be in underwear, otherwise the results will be incorrect. To find the size according to the child’s height, you need to take one measurement - the distance from the top of the head to the heels. Up to two years of age, height is measured lying down, then standing. This is due to the fact that little fidgets cannot keep their backs in a straight position.

But it is still advisable to take the remaining measurements, because determining the size of clothes based on the child’s height is not always correct. Such things are designed for average children, and each baby is individual: one is taller and thinner, the other is shorter and heavier.

Principle of taking measurements:

OG. Stretch the tape in a circle so that it touches the most convex point of the chest and runs along the armpits.
FROM. Place the ribbon around your waist so that it goes through the narrow part of the waist. Round the value slightly so that the pullover does not squeeze your protruding tummy.
ABOUT. Wrap the tape around your thighs so that it touches the fullest part of your buttocks.
Step seam. Measure from the groin to the ankle if you plan to buy pants, or to an imaginary edge if you need shorts.
The length of the sleeve. Measure from your forearm to your wrist. This indicator is only necessary for selecting sweaters, cardigans, and full-sleeve shirts.

When updating your wardrobe, not all metrics need to be used. When updating the top, the main attention is paid to the OG and sleeve length, the bottom - to the crotch seam and OB.

It is not recommended to rely solely on growth indicators. For example, having found out what size you are with a height of 152 cm, you cannot immediately go for leggings, since this figure is listed in two columns: under the numbers 38 and 40. You should measure your hip circumference. If it is 80 cm, you need to look for leggings marked 38. And if it is 85 cm - 40.

Correspondence of sizes of the Russian Federation vs foreign countries

Unlike the USSR-their labels, the Chinese are age-oriented. USA size ranges include both numeric and alphabetic symbols. The first ones correspond to age, the second ones are abbreviations for the words: children's size L – large, S – small, M – medium.

The letter T can be marked on the labels of children's clothing. The number before the T indicates the age: 2T - 2 years old, 3T - 3 years old. But you can safely choose skirts and trousers of size 74, because it will be much easier to shorten them in length than to sew them in at the side seams. If there is any doubt between two expected sizes, the choice should be made in favor of the larger one. After all, the baby will definitely grow up, and the thing will be able to serve him much longer.

Today we will not talk about GOSTs. The sizes of children's clothing, of course, are regulated in certain documentation, but for us the parameters used directly by manufacturers are relevant. We will talk about Russia, Europe, the USA and China. We will provide the main size charts indicating their features (if available) by country.

Clothes for children in Russia, basic information

Below is a table of children's sizes, applicable for most domestic manufacturers. As you can see, it includes parameters that are not included in the mesh for adult items: age, weight, sleeve and crotch length. In addition, the numbers in the first column are duplicated for adjacent ages. Such differences are easily explained by the different heights and growth rates of children.

You probably already noticed that there are no points for teenagers 15-18 years old. The reason is simple: at this age, children are increasingly closer in their parameters to adults, different markings are used for them, and a division by gender is introduced. Accordingly, there is no table of clothing sizes for children from 0 to 16 years old (Russia). That's why:

From 0 to 13-14 years old, watch the grid, given above. Includes average data, there is no division into boys and girls.
For 14-18 years old – the option below. Designated as "Teenage". The sizes of children's clothing in the table are divided not by age, but by height, chest and hip volume, divided into girls and boys. We also turn here if your child is ahead of his peers in height/volume.

Of course, in addition to designations with numbers, there are also letter markings: s, m, l, xl, xxl, etc. They are typical for foreign manufacturers; below we will give more detailed information about their compliance with Russian standards

We measure the child

Children's sizes are taken in the same way as adults:

Height We ask the child to take off his shoes and lean his back against the wall. We make a mark at the highest point of the head. We measure the distance from the floor to the mark.
Chest, waist and hips. We use a measuring tape to wrap around our model along lines 2, 3 and 4, marked in the figure below.
The length of the sleeve. From the top of the shoulder to the first knuckle of the thumb. The arm should be slightly bent at the elbow, as in the figure.
Inseam length. This is the distance from the ankle to the middle seam of the trousers.

The sizes of children's clothing are recorded in centimeters; we have given the correspondence tables for them above.

Important! When taking measurements around the circumference of the waist, hips and chest, do not tighten the measuring tape too tightly or allow it to sag. We only achieve a tight fit and horizontal position relative to the floor.

What to pay special attention to

The more accurately you get into the size of clothes for children, the better the item will fit. However, we should not forget that the baby grows quickly, but unevenly: in the first 12 months of life he will gain about 30 cm and 5-6 kg; after 10 years, it can sharply stretch upward or, conversely, slightly lag behind peers in height; after 13, a boy or girl can easily “go” into adult dimensions. Some tips for choosing:

For non-walking children (up to 12 months), you can take things with a good supply, because they grow quickly, and rolled up trouser legs and sleeves are not so critical.
The size of outerwear for children can also be chosen with a margin - usually this is the actual age + year.
After 5 years, a child attaches more and more importance to how he looks, so you should be more careful when buying T-shirts, trousers, dresses: choose an item exactly according to your measurements or with a minimum margin.
For babies under one year old, you can determine what size is needed only by the length of the body; usually things have a sufficient margin in width; from 12 months to three years – height + breast volume; from three years – we take into account all parameters.

By and large, both children's clothing sizing charts (Russia) are universal. They have fairly large forks with parameters for different heights and configurations. But nevertheless, not all teenagers fit into them: usually it is low weight with high stature or high weight with short stature. In this case, you will have to spend time searching for “your” brand. For example, jeans for tall (180-185 cm) and thin teenagers can be found at Gap, JCrew and Edwin, T-shirts at Old Navy, We Fashion, etc. If you want ones that appear in the world, see another section.

Correspondence of parameters in Russia, USA, England and Europe

Foreign brands occupy a significant place in the Russian textile market. Therefore, we cannot ignore the sizes of European, English and American children's clothing. Their markings differ from Russian ones and have their own characteristics. So, in Europe, the scale for girls is divided by height, for boys it is a sequence of numbers from 0 to 12; in America, the jackal contains both numbers and letters.

Note: almost all numbers in England and America are duplicated by age. For example, for both 6 and 5 year olds you take English No. 4, but look at the label for the required height and chest circumference. This is convenient, since a five-year period may well be equal to a six-year period or vice versa. For Europe, such repetitions are not typical. Newborn babies

As we mentioned above, babies grow very quickly. Moreover, the most intensive growth is in the first six months, then it gradually slows down. Therefore, the grid looks like this: before six months, the step is 2 months, after - 3 months. There are 8 age levels in total, and no distinction is made between girls and boys. As you can see, this also has its own characteristics: in Europe, marking is done by height; in England, one number is used for all 12 months (+ body length and chest girth are indicated on labels); in America, the period is indicated by months - from 0 to 3, then from 3 to 6 and from 6 to 9, and from 12 - letters. We are gradually moving away from the stereotype that Chinese = bad, low-quality. Of course, there are certain nuances with products from this country, but there is nevertheless a demand for it. We buy things both offline and online. The markings on them are clear: the month (digit + M) or year (digit + T) of life is indicated. Children's sizes on aliexpress, table from 3 to 15 years:

Choice of hats

The sizes of children's hats are determined by age and head circumference in centimeters. However, the grids may differ: some have a step of 1 cm, as in the table below, others have 2 (40, 42, 44, etc.) or even 4 cm (40, 44, 48, etc.). This depends, first of all, on the type of headgear: for elastic products, knitted or knitted, the step is larger, for non-stretchy products, the step is smaller. Age is not always indicated.

We mentioned above that children, especially newborns, grow very quickly, and it is better to take extra clothes for them. But this advice does not apply to hats: they should be selected as accurately as possible. A hat that is too large will cause inconvenience, and in the case of very small children, if it moves onto the face (during sleep), it can interfere with normal breathing. The size of children's socks usually comes in fairly large increments, which is explained by the high elasticity of modern products: they easily stretch by 3-4 cm. This can be clearly seen from the following table. But this is not a rule: some manufacturers have a more detailed grid, in increments of 1 cm and 1 month, separate for babies up to 12 months. and from 1 year to 12 years.

Sock selection

When choosing socks, it is not necessary to make a purchase exactly to the centimeter, but it is better that the length of the foot does not go along the upper limit. For example, with a foot 12 cm long, we take a product with numbers 12-14, and not 10-12. How, a detailed table is in a separate article on this topic.

Tights for children

The sizes of children's tights are determined by the child's age, height, hip circumference and foot length. Moreover, in the tables the size is indicated with an error of 6 cm.(68-74, 74-80, 86-92, etc.), and the length of the foot is 2 cm (10-12, 12-14, 14-16, etc.). As you can see, the table shows similar parameters for the same ages. This makes it possible to choose tights for children of different sizes.

The peculiarity of knitted and knitted fabrics applies here: the stronger the transverse stretch, the shorter they are made. For example, for a “client” with a hip circumference of 52 cm and a height of 80 cm, you need to take tights with a size of 86-92, not 74-80: the extra length in this case will go into the width, the product will fit well on the figure.
