Cat saves couple from gas leak

In October 2007, at about two in the morning, when Trudy and Greg Guy were sleeping in their room, their cat Schnauzie ran up to them and began to wake up the mistress, touching her nose with her paws. At first, Trudy did not pay attention to such, as it seemed to her, pranks, but the animal's persistent and restless behavior made the woman realize that something serious had happened. Trudy woke up her husband Greg, who, after looking around the house, discovered that a gas pipe had burst in the basement, filling the room with a dangerous, acrid smell. The family called 911 and hurried out of the house. The firefighters who arrived at the scene told the owners that if the cat had not awakened them in time, the house could easily fly into the air. Schnauzie later received the Purple Paw Award from the Great Falls Animal Foundation, Montana.

Golden Retriever saved a boy from a cougar

January 2, 2010 Austin, an 11-year-old boy from British Columbia (Canada), was gathering firewood in the forest with his faithful and devoted friend, a golden retriever named Angel. That evening the dog did not behave as usual; he was excited about something, and, as it turned out later, for good reason. A few meters away from the boy, the dog noticed a cougar preparing to attack. The angel instantly rushed to the predatory animal and took the attack on himself, entering into an unequal battle with him. Luckily, a police constable was nearby, who shot the cougar before it could tear the retriever to shreds. "He was my best friend, and now he's become even more dear to me," Austin said, tossing Angel a large, fatty piece of meat.

The woman began to choke; there was no one around except her dog, a golden retriever named Toby, who jumped up abruptly, knocked his owner down and began to press on her chest with his paws, performing a canine version of the Heimlich maneuver. “The doctor said that if it wasn’t for Toby, I wouldn’t be alive,” said Debbie Parkhurst. Where the dog could have learned the Heimlich technique remains a big mystery, but this is not so important, because by doing this he saved the life of his mistress.

2. A man saved a bear from drowning

In 2008, a baribal came too close to a residential area near Alligator Point, about 65 kilometers south of the capital city of Tallahassee, Florida. Animal control arrived and shot the baribal with a tranquilizer, but instead of falling asleep immediately, the bear ran towards the Gulf of Mexico.

When the animal entered the water, the tranquilizer began to act. A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist named Adam Warwick jumped into the water to save the animal. The bear began to swim and Warwick took off his shoes and took off his shirt to prevent the bear from swimming too far. He succeeded, and then he began to splash water to intimidate him and send him back to the shore, but the animal did not budge. Warwick said: "The scariest part was probably when he made up his mind - he started looking at me like he wanted to climb on top of me so he wouldn't drown, and at some point he got up on his hind legs so I ended up facing face with a bear two meters high. However, instead of lunging forward, he just fell back and went under the water for a few seconds, which is when I rushed towards him.”

Warwick managed to haul the 170 kg animal back to shore, where a backhoe operator was waiting to help load the bear onto a truck for transport to the wild.

3. "Half-dog" Pig became an Internet sensation.

The pig (Pig) was born in the wild, and was found abandoned with three littermates in a wooded area near Atlanta, Georgia.

The pig was smaller than her siblings by 6.8 kilograms and severely deformed. Her spine was about seventeen centimeters shorter than it should have been, and curved, with many fused bones. She jumps like a frog to get to her feet, raises her shoulders when walking and cannot turn her head from side to side. She has to turn her whole body to see what is next to her.

Kim Dillenbeck of Alabama saw Pig for the first time on a Christmas trip to Atlanta and adopted her despite advice from veterinarians to euthanize the dog. They didn't expect Pig to survive due to her deformity, but she defied fate and leads a fairly normal life. She even became an internet sensation with 42,000 followers (and growing) on her Facebook page.

4 Deformed Chihuahua and Lab Rescued Chicken Become Best Friends

A silk hen and a two-legged Chihuahua puppy rescued from certain death make friends at an animal hospital in Georgia.

Penny the hen and Roo the chihuahua were rescued by Alicia Williams from Duluth Animal Hospital where they are petted daily by staff and clients alike.

Penny was rescued first. Williams was an animal science student, and Penny was a nine-week-old lab chicken whose time had come to an end. Typically, animals are euthanized after the end of a scientific experiment, but Williams asked to take Penny home. A few months later, little Ru was found shivering in a ditch in the park. A seven-week-old puppy that was born without fully formed front legs is believed to have been discarded by amateur breeders.

Source 8Donkey and goat reunited after they were rescued from the home of a man who kept a huge number of animals and did not look after them

Mr. G the goat and Jellybean the donkey were rescued from the home of a man who kept a huge number of animals and did not look after them in Southern California after they lived in an abandoned state for ten years. Only two shelters offered to take the animals in - Mr. G found a home at the Animal Place Rescue Ranch in Vacaville, California, while Jellybean was moved elsewhere.

After his arrival, Mr. G became lethargic. He spent his days lying in the corner of the stall, barely raising his head. Volunteers had to physically move the animal so that it did not spend too much time lying down. After it turned out that Mr. G was completely physically healthy, it became obvious that he was depressed. He missed Jellybean. The goat was inconsolable and refused to eat anything. Something had to be done.

An animal shelter volunteer made a 14-hour round trip to bring Jellybean. When they arrived, Mr. G was completely transformed. He ran outside and ran around Jellybean with a newfound sense of purpose. The animal shelter has decided to keep the couple together as permanent residents on the organization's 243-hectare property in Grass Valley.

With over 6 million views and not stopping there, their story has spread all over the internet and YouTube. Just look at this touching reunion of this incredible couple:

Source 9A dog rescued from a Korean meat market finds a new home in Chicago

The dinner table dog was rescued by an animal rights activist who was visiting South Korea at the time to seek a permanent ban on the dog and cat meat industry.

Robin Dorman, spokeswoman for In Defense of Animals, was visiting Moran Market in Seongham when she found a young dog that she thought had escaped her cage from the market . “As we were about to head back to the car, a small apricot and white Jindo suddenly appeared and started running beside us,” Dorman wrote in a blog post about her experience. “Intimidated, trembling with cold and fear, she ran along the parking lot, and then, finally, threw herself under the car ... After some persuasion, the white figure reappeared, licking our fingers, wagging its tail, and was immediately accepted into hugs and loaded into the car."

The dog was named Nan (Snow in Korean) and given the nickname Nannie. She is one of four dogs rescued by Dorman during her trip. Zahava Katz-Perlish and her husband Mark, volunteers for the Chicago Animal Shelter Adopt-a-Pet, offered to take Nanni into their care. Nanni will visit a veterinarian upon his arrival in the US and will be placed with a foster family until volunteers find him a permanent home with loving owners.

10. A homeless woman and a wild cat saved each other

Roza Katovitch and a black and white cat named Miss Tuxedo found each other in the most unexpected place - a cemetery in the town of Colma, California.

In 2000, Katovich lost her boyfriend, Rich, who died due to a heart aneurysm. Her father died three days later. Heartbroken, she fell into a deep depression, fell ill, and eventually lost her job. A few years later, Katovich lost her apartment when her building was sold.

Homeless with worsening depression, she spent most of her days at Rich's grave in Colma. It was there that she met Miss Tuxedo.

The Colma cemetery is home to many feral cats that prey on gophers and other rodents. Katovich knew most of them by sight and a few by name. While feral cats aren't overly friendly to humans, it seemed that Miss Tuxedo needed Katovich as much as Katovich needed her.

"I was arranging the flowers in Rich's vase and she would stick her head under my arms," she said. "It was as if she was saying, 'No, no, love me.' Suddenly I had a purpose. I don't know why, but this cat loves me."

By spending time with and taking care of Miss Tuxedo, Katovich stopped feeling so alone and even began to forget her grief. She soon applied for affordable housing and won an apartment in a residential complex near San Mateo. Who lives with her? Miss Tuxedo.

“I got permission to bring it in,” Katovich said. “My doctor said my life depended on it. I think that's actually the case."

We are constantly confronted with amazing stories about people who survived in situations where it would seem impossible to survive. These incredible cases teach us that self-confidence and a positive attitude can sometimes be enough to emerge unscathed (or recoverable, at least) from the most critical situations.

Model whose body is supported by 11 metal rods
Charming model Katrina Burgess survived a car accident that broke her neck, back and ribs, damaged her pelvis, punctured her lungs and caused a host of other injuries. Katrina's car drove off the highway at over 100 km/h into a roadside ditch.

Her body is held together by 11 metal rods and countless screws, which is sure to give her some trouble getting through metal detectors at airports.

The day after the accident, doctors inserted a rod into the girl's left thigh from her foot to her knee. It is held on by 4 titanium studs. A week later, 6 horizontal rods appeared in Katrina's body, which should support her spine. A week later, a titanium screw attached Katrina's neck to her spine.

Katrina Burgess was able to live without pain medication only 5 months after the accident. Today Katrina Burgess is a famous model.

Climber who cut off his hand
Aaron Lee Ralston, born 1975 a mechanical engineer by profession and a climber by vocation, he was forced to amputate his right arm, which was clamped by a boulder, in order to free himself.

The accident occurred in Utah (USA), in April 2003, while climbing in the Canyonlands National Park. A 300-kilogram boulder fell on the climber's right hand and pinched it. Going to the ascent, Ralston did not tell anyone about his plans and route, so he knew that no one would look for him.

For 4 days Aaron lay by the rock. Then he ran out of water and had to drink his own urine. Aaron carved his name into the canyon wall (with the date of his supposed death) and made a farewell note on the camera phone. Based on the autobiographical book, the Oscar-winning film "127 Hours" was shot.

Then the realization came that there was nothing to lose and the climber decided to fight. Aaron with a sharp movement tried to remove his hand from under the stone. But in doing so, he broke his arm. With a blunt knife, he cut the skin, muscles and tendons, thus separating the arm from his body. After that, Aaron was able to descend from the 20-meter wall and began his journey to salvation. Fortunately, he met tourists, they fed and watered Aaron, and also called rescuers who took the climber to the hospital and found a severed hand. The hand was later cremated.
In the photo: a stone that pressed the hand of climber Aron Lee Ralston

Some time later, Aaron Lee Ralston wrote the book "In a stalemate", in which he described what happened to him. He continues to climb, is married and has a child.

The revolutionary was placed against the wall, a volley of firing platoon was heard. Wenceslao received 9 bullet wounds, including one from a control shot fired at point blank range by an officer in the head.

The soldiers left, rightly deciding that the revolutionary was dead. But Wenceslao woke up, was able to get to his own, and after that lived a long restless life. But a photo of Wenceslao Moguel in 1937 shows the scar left by a control shot on an NBC show called Believe it or Not?

Woman giving birth during brain surgery
Yulia Shumakova, a 24-year-old resident of Yekaterinburg, Russia, was taken to the hospital in critical condition after she suddenly lost consciousness after returning from work. Julia was 32 weeks pregnant. The examination revealed a seal in her brain, which was the cause of the attack. The patient was given a disappointing diagnosis, with such a disease people die in 96% of cases without even reaching the hospital. The doctors decided to perform brain surgery and at the same time perform a caesarean section. There were practically no chances. But, to the surprise of the relatives of the patient and the doctors themselves, both the mother and the child were able to survive.

Music teacher who survived many accidents
Croatian music teacher Frank Selak is possibly the luckiest person in the world. The train Frank was on derailed and fell into the icy water. His bus overturned. The door of the plane on which the teacher was flying was blown off. Two cars burned down while Frank Selak was driving.

In addition to everything, during a trip along a mountain road, Frank lost control and his car fell into an abyss. The driver himself at the same time fell on a branched tree and watched the flight of his car another 100 meters down and its explosion. It would seem quite enough to simply survive all these misfortunes, but Frank Selak also won $ 1 million in the lottery.

Man nearly cut in half by train
This accident happened in June 2006 to Truman Duncan, a rail yard switchman in Cleburne, Texas. He was riding a handcar to the repair dock, but he slipped and fell on the front wheels. Truman struggled to keep himself from falling onto the rails under the wheels of the handcar, but was instead pinned between the wheels of the wagon bogie.

In this position, the trolley dragged him 25 meters, cutting the switchman's body almost in half. He was able to call 911 and waited for help for 45 minutes. Truman underwent 23 surgeries and lost his right and left legs, pelvis, and left kidney.

Woman who survived a plane crash due to lightning
What do you think is more life-threatening: getting struck by lightning, falling out of an airplane, or wading through the rainforest for 9 days with numerous injuries? High school student Juliana Koepke went through all these misfortunes and stayed alive. On December 24, 1971, LANSA flight 508 (Peru) was caught in a thunderstorm and struck by lightning. At that moment, the plane was above the tropical forest at an altitude of 3 kilometers. The plane broke into pieces.

A row of seats, to one of which Juliana was fastened, collapsed into the forest 3 kilometers from the main accident site. The remaining 92 people on that ill-fated flight died. The girl herself claimed that a row of seats in the fall rotated like a helicopter blade, which probably slowed down the speed of the fall, in addition, the seats fell into the dense crowns of trees.

After falling from a height of 3 kilometers, Juliana's collarbone was broken, her arm was badly scratched, her right eye was swollen from the impact, her whole body was covered with bruises and scratches. But, fortunately, there were no injuries that prevented movement. Trust in God, but don't make a mistake yourself! Juliana's father was a biologist, she repeatedly visited the jungle with him and had an idea how to survive in the forest and get out of it. Juliana was able to get food for herself, then she found a stream and went down its course, hoping in this way to get to the river, where you can meet people. After 9 days, she came across fishermen who saved the girl.

The case of Juliana Koepke formed the basis of two films. Julian herself, after her adventure, did not turn away from wildlife and became a zoologist.

Earthquake victim spent 27 days under rubble
Khaleed Hussain, a 20-year-old farm worker, was buried alive under the rubble of his home in the October 8, 2005 earthquake. Wooden and brick fragments clamped him in a very uncomfortable position, only his hands could move a little. Both hands continued to make involuntary digging movements even after his rescue, which makes it possible to understand what horror the person buried alive experienced. Khalid was accidentally discovered only on November 10, that is, almost a month after the earthquake. His right leg was broken in several places.

A child with a rare tumor who happened to be born twice
Keri McCartney was 4 months pregnant when doctors discovered a dangerous tumor the size of a grapefruit on the baby's body that interfered with the baby's blood circulation and weakened his heart. The doctors decided to try to save the child.

Doctors at the Texas Children’s Fetal Center (USA) opened up the mother’s womb and removed the fetus halfway to remove the tumor. The operation was performed very quickly, after which the fetus was placed back. The baby survived and the next 10 weeks of Keri's pregnancy were uneventful.

In due time, Keri McCartney gave birth to a daughter, who became a twice-born child.

Airplane passengers who lived in the winter mountains for 72 days after it crashed
Uruguayan Airlines Flight 571 (also known as the "Miracle in the Andes" and "The Catastrophe in the Andes") crashed in the Andes on October 13, 1972. There were 45 people on board, including rugby players, their families and friends. 10 people died immediately, the rest had to survive for 72 days in the mountains with little or no food and warm clothes.

The surviving people were forced to eat the meat of the dead, it was well preserved in the cold. Only 16 passengers managed to beat death, the rest died from hunger and an avalanche.

After the surviving passengers of Flight 571 heard on the radio that their search had been terminated, two of them, without mountain equipment, clothes and food, went for help and 12 days later came across people. The surviving passengers were rescued on December 23, 1972. A book was written and a movie made about the heroism and will to live of the passengers of Flight 571.

Captain behind the windshield
25 years ago, on June 10, 1990, Tim Lancaster, captain of a BAC 1-11 Series 528FL airliner, survived an extended stay outside his aircraft at an altitude of about 5,000 meters. Wearing a seat belt is important not only for motorists: the commander of the BAC 1-11 aircraft of British Airways, Tim Lancaster, certainly remembered this elementary safety rule forever after June 10, 1990.

While flying the plane at an altitude of 5273 meters, Tim Lancaster relaxed his seat belt. Shortly thereafter, the windshield of the airliner burst. The captain immediately flew out through the opening, and he was pressed with his back to the fuselage of the aircraft from the outside. Lancaster's legs got stuck between the helm and control panel, and the cockpit door torn off by the air current landed on the radio and navigation panel, shattering it. Flight attendant Nigel Ogden, who was in the cockpit, did not lose his head and firmly grabbed the captain's legs. The co-pilot was able to land the plane only after 22 minutes, all this time the captain of the aircraft was outside. The flight attendant holding Lancaster believed that he was dead, but did not let go, as he was afraid that the body would get into the engine and it would burn out, reducing the chances of the liner for a safe landing.

After landing, it turned out that Tim was alive, doctors diagnosed him with bruises, as well as fractures of his right hand, a finger on his left hand and his right wrist. Five months later, Lancaster again sat at the helm. Steward Nigel Ogden escaped with a dislocated shoulder, frostbite on his face and left eye.

Wing mechanic
When on May 27, 1995, during tactical maneuvers, the MiG-17 got stuck in the mud after leaving the runway, ground service mechanic Pyotr Gorbanev and his comrades rushed to the rescue. Together, the plane was pushed onto the GDP. Freed from the mud, the MiG began to quickly pick up speed and a minute later soared into the air, “grabbing” the mechanic, who was bent around the front of the wing by the air flow.

Gaining altitude, the fighter pilot felt that the car was behaving strangely. Looking around, he saw a foreign object on the wing. The flight took place at night, and therefore it was not possible to consider it. It was advised to shake off the “foreign object” from the ground by maneuvering. And at that moment, the silhouette on the wing seemed to the pilot very similar to a person, so he asked for permission to land. The fighter landed at 23:27, having spent about half an hour in the air. All this time, Gorbanev spent in consciousness on the wing of the interceptor - he was firmly held by the oncoming air flow. After landing, it turned out that the mechanic got off with a strong fright and a fracture of two ribs.

Jump from 7 thousand meters without a parachute
In January 1942, navigator Ivan Chisov flew out to bombard German troops in the area of Vyazma station. Their link was attacked by the Messerschmites, who soon knocked out Ivan's bomber. It was necessary to leave the burning plane, but the Germans finished off our pilots in the air, so Ivan decided to go down with a long jump.

However, when the time came to open the parachute, the navigator lost consciousness. As a result, he collapsed from a height of 7000 meters (according to other sources - from 7600) onto the slope of a huge snowdrift, and then slid along the snowy slope of the ravine for a long time. When Chisov was found, he was conscious, but received several serious fractures. After recovery, Ivan became a teacher at the navigation school.

Do not get a single scratch by jumping from a height of 5 thousand meters
The unique case that happened to 21-year-old Sergeant Nicholas Stephen Alcaid on March 24, 1944 is officially documented. During a raid on Germany, his bomber was set on fire by German fighters. It so happened that the flames destroyed Nicholas's parachute as well. Not wanting to die in the fire, the sergeant jumped out of the plane, believing that he would die faster this way.

From a height of 5500 meters, the guy collapsed onto pine branches, and then into soft snow and lost consciousness. When Alcade woke up, he noted with surprise that not a single bone was broken. Looking at the stars above his head, the sergeant took out a cigarette and lit it. Soon the Gestapo discovered him. The Germans were so amazed by what had happened that they even gave him a certificate confirming this miraculous rescue.

Meeting with Paul McCartney after a successful fall from a height of 10 thousand meters
This female flight attendant set the record for surviving a fall from a great height - more than 10,000 meters. The then 22-year-old girl got on the ill-fated flight JAT 367 by mistake - Vesna Nikolic was supposed to fly, but the airline messed up something, and Vesna Vulovich went on the flight. At an altitude of about 10,000 meters, an improvised explosive device allegedly went off in the plane, and the cockpit was torn off from the main body. The wreckage of the aircraft landed on snow-covered pine trees, which likely softened the fall.

The girl was lucky that she was discovered by a local peasant, Bruno Honke, who worked during World War II in a German hospital and knew how to provide medical care. The girl's injuries were serious, but she survived: Vesna spent 27 days in a coma and 16 months in the hospital.

In 1985, her case was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest jump without a parachute. And the corresponding certificate Vulovich was presented by her idol Paul McCartney.

75 rub. for a life
The name of Larisa Savitskaya was included in the Russian edition of the Guinness Book of Records as the only person who survived a fall from a height of 5200 m, and as the person who received the minimum amount of compensation for physical damage - 75 rubles. The plane crash happened in August 1981. A 20-year-old student was returning with her husband to Blagoveshchensk from a honeymoon and accidentally sat in the tail of the plane, although she had tickets to the middle of the cabin. At the time of the An-24 passenger collision with the Tu-16 military bomber, which occurred due to an error by the dispatchers, Larisa was sleeping.

Waking up from a strong blow, she felt a burn, as the temperature dropped sharply to -30 ° C. When the fuselage broke, Savitskaya ended up on the floor in the aisle, but managed to get up, run to the chair and squeeze into it, before “her” fragment glided onto a birch grove. After landing, she was unconscious for several hours. Waking up, she saw the body of her husband and, despite grief, broken ribs, arms, concussion and spinal injuries, began to fight for life.

From the wreckage of the plane, she built herself a semblance of a hut to escape the rains, warmed herself with seat covers and covered herself with mosquito bags. Rescuers found her two days after the disaster.

How the survivor Larisa Savitskaya was given 75 rubles. (According to the standards of the State Insurance in the USSR, 300 rubles were supposed to be compensated for damages for those who died and 75 rubles for those who survived in plane crashes). The Soviet press reported the incident only in 1985 as a catastrophe during an aircraft test. Larisa herself claimed that at the time of the crash, she remembered the Italian film “Miracles Still Happen” about a heroine who survived in the same situation.

76 days on an inflatable raft
US yachtsman Stephen Callahan was going to take part in a single race across the Atlantic Ocean on the Napoleon Solo sailboat, but the unexpected happened - according to the athlete, the ship was rammed by a whale and the ship went to the bottom.

Callahan managed to save an inflatable raft and a bag with a survival kit from a sinking ship, for which he had to dive into a flooded cabin. In this bag was a book about survival in the ocean. A yachtsman has speared fish and eaten it raw, fought the waves, survived a shark attack. He saw nine ships pass by, but none noticed the small raft.

The raft made its way from the Cape Verde Peninsula (Senegal) to the island of Marie-Galante in the Caribbean Sea (Guadeloupe archipelago): when it was washed ashore, local fishermen found an emaciated traveler with salt water ulcers on his body. In total, Callahan spent 76 days at sea and covered 3,300 km. The events described took place in 1982, you can read about them in the memoirs of the yachtsman "In the drift: Seventy-six days in captivity by the sea." Stephen Callahan was a consultant on the filming of Ang Lee's Life of Pi.

Three weeks in the Amazon jungle
Israeli Yossi Ginsberg went with three friends to look for an aboriginal tribe in the jungles of Bolivia. On the way, the company split in two due to a quarrel, Yossi stayed with his partner Kevin, they began to go down the river on a raft and stumbled upon the threshold: Ginsberg's friend immediately swam ashore, and he himself became involved in the flow of the waterfall and miraculously did not die.

Yossi spent the next three weeks surviving alone in the Amazon jungle. He had to eat raw bird eggs and fruits, fight off a jaguar - he managed to be scared away with the help of insect spray, which Yosi guessed to set on fire, and at the end of the trip he almost drowned in a swamp. “The most difficult moment was when I realized that I was all alone,” Ginsberg later recalled. “At some point, I decided that I was ready for any suffering, but I would not stop.”

When the traveler was finally found by a local search party, he was covered in insect bites and sunburn, and a whole colony of termites settled on his body. About this unforgettable journey, which happened in 1981, Ginsberg wrote the book "Alone in the Jungle", the documentary film "I Shouldn't Have Survived" was made by the Discovery Channel, and the feature film "The Jungle" starring Kevin Bacon will soon be made. scheduled for 2016).

41 days in the ocean
The journey of a young couple on the route Tahiti - San Diego was disrupted by a sudden hurricane. 12-meter waves overturned a sailing ship in which 23-year-old American Tami Ashcraft and her British fiancé Richard Sharp sailed. From the impact of the wave, the girl lost consciousness. When Tami woke up a day later, she saw that the boat was broken, and her friend's life belt was torn.

Tami built a temporary mast, bailed out the water from the cabin, and continued her journey, guided by the stars. Her voyage alone lasted 41 days, supplies of water, peanut butter and canned food were barely enough not to die of exhaustion. As a result, the girl swam 2400 km alone and independently entered the Hawaiian harbor of Hilo. About her sad journey, which happened in 1983, Tami Ashcraft told only in 1998 in the book "The sky is purple with sadness."

San Jose mine accident
On August 5, 2010, a rock fall occurred at the San José mine, near Copiapó, Chile. 33 miners were walled up at a depth of about 700 m and about 5 km from the entrance to the mine. As a result of the accident, people had to stay underground for a record 69 days.
In the photo: Chilean miners immured underground look into a camera lowered to them.

Work on clearing the rubble began immediately, and the rescuers tried to go down in the traditional way, through the ventilation shafts - however, it quickly became clear that the ventilation passages were also blocked. After that, heavy equipment was involved in the work, which was supposed to clear the blockage directly at the entrance to the face, where, according to calculations, the surviving miners could be. But the use of heavy equipment complicated the unstable situation in the mine, there was a new collapse, and this idea was abandoned.
Pictured: Relatives of miners trapped in a gold-and-copper mine gather at a screen showing footage from a mine in Copiapo, north of Santiago, Chile.

In addition, it turned out that the mine management did not have an accurate and detailed map of all underground tunnels, so the rescuers soon had to act almost blindly. The essence of the operation was to drill vertical wells almost at random with the double hope that one of these wells would reach the tunnels and that there would still be living people in these tunnels. Wells were drilled for more than two weeks, so that hopes of saving someone were gradually fading. But on August 22, a new vertical well was drilled and a drill was raised, in which there was a note, the meaning of which was that all 33 miners who were in the mine were alive and in a safe haven.

It was decided to use American drilling equipment, developed with the participation of NASA for use in space programs. This equipment was designed to work with especially strong rock and was designed to speed up the pace of the rescue operation. Indeed, the use of expensive equipment (the total cost of the rescue operation exceeded $ 20 million) helped to make an emergency pit by October 9th. By October 12, the rescue operation, the final stage of which consisted in raising the cradle, which accommodated only one miner, through a pit with a diameter of about 90 centimeters, was successfully completed.

It is generally accepted that each individual species of animals lives its own separate life and interacts with humans and other species only in case of emergency. And only people (though not all) try to take care of representatives of the animal world.

Therefore, every story, when an animal that has not undergone special training, saves a representative of another species, amazes and delights people.

Although we - real animal lovers - have long known that many of them will give a big head start to some representatives kindHomosapiens.

The selection below presents 8 touching stories about the miraculous salvation of human life by animals.

Pig saves heart attack victim

This instructive story took place in the USA in 1998. And it is instructive, first of all, for those skeptics who continue to assert that pigs (and not only decorative ones!) Can not replace such pets as dogs for us. Allegedly, they are not so smart or loyal.

Jo-Ann Altsman, a resident of Pennsylvania, believes otherwise. 13 years ago, a woman had a heart attack. Jo-En suddenly felt very ill and, in the next instant, fell to the floor.

The woman was at home alone, apart from pets: dogs and pigs named Lulu. The dog immediately began to bark loudly, apparently calling for someone to help. The pig, without thinking twice, rushed into the street and lay across the roadway (fortunately, it passed next to the house), blocking the movement of cars with its fat body.

The slow-witted motorists could not reach in any way what this four-legged wanted from them; they honked and tried to bypass Lulu. The pig periodically got up and ran into the house, as if to make sure that everything was in order with her mistress. Then the animal returned to the road.

As a result, some passerby drew attention to Lulu's strange throwing and followed her into the house, where he found Jo-En, who by that time was already unconscious. The ambulance, which the man called, took the woman to the hospital, where they managed to save her life by providing the necessary assistance.

The goat saved the farmer from hunger and hypothermia

Noel Osborne, an elderly farmer living as a hermit in one of the Australian states, is faced with an unexpected situation. And faced in the truest sense of the word!

According to the old man, his own cow kicked him so hard that he flew into a huge pile of manure and other waste that the farmer used on his farm. All this rubbish fell right on top of an elderly man, crushing his thigh and completely immobilizing him.

Most likely, the old man would have died there, since there was no one to call for help, and it was not possible to get to other settlements with such an injury.

However, his ... goat unexpectedly came to the aid of the man. Not only did the animal stay with Noel for the entire five days until it was found, supplying it with milk and staying with its owner overnight.

I must say that the weather in those days was rainy, and it was very cold at night, so Noel survived only thanks to the fact that the goat warmed him with her body, laying next to him for the night.

Beluga whale rescued a drowning athlete

Chinese diver Yang Yun is said to have been born wearing a shirt. The woman took part in freediving competitions, which took place in the pool with beluga whales at the famous Harbin Polarland Zoo in China.

At that moment, when the athlete, having "served" a certain time at the depth of the pool, decided to emerge, Yang felt a strong cramp in her legs. There was no longer enough air, there was no opportunity to emerge with numb legs, and Yang Yun decided that the moment had come to say goodbye to life, when suddenly some unknown force began to intensively push the diver to the surface of the pool.

A white whale named Mila sensed something was wrong with the woman's behavior and decided to come to the rescue. She immediately dived under the athlete, carefully clamped her legs in her mouth and pushed the woman to the surface, into the air, which saved that life.

Dog saved 92 sailors from death

This story happened in 1919 off the coast of Nova Scotia, a province in eastern Canada. It is very popular in those parts, an incredible number of books have been written about it, and children study it in schools.

Then, on the rocks near one of the coasts of the province, a storm raging in the Atlantic Ocean threw a ship with 93 sailors on board. In fact, they found themselves among the raging elements, and they had no choice but to humbly wait for their fate, and it was inevitable - the ship could jump off the reef at any moment and go to the bottom.

The sailors had the only chance - to deliver to the shore (which was relatively close) the end of a long ship's rope, with which the schooner could be quickly pulled to land until it went to the bottom.

One of the sailors tried to swim to the shore, but the waves threw him onto the rocks and he died. The last hope for the unfortunate was a Newfoundland dog named Tang, who, despite the terrible waves, was able to swim to the shore with a rope clamped in his mouth.

On the shore, many people watched the battle with the elements, who were incredibly surprised to see that a rope was stretching from the mouth of a dog emerging from the water into the sea. The schooner was quickly pulled ashore, and all the remaining 92 sailors were rescued.

Horse saves woman from mad cow

The following story took place near one of the Scottish farms. Farmer Fiona Boyd was just leading a calf that had strayed from the herd back into the field, when suddenly his mother ran up to them and unexpectedly attacked the woman.

The cow knocked Fiona to the ground and started running around her, trying to attack again and again. It seemed that another moment and the mad animal would trample the woman with its hooves.

Fiona was in a panic, but by some miracle she managed to dodge the blows of the animal's hooves, rolling over the grass from place to place. Fortunately for the woman, her 15-year-old mare named Kerry was grazing near the scene of the incident.

The horse, seeing that its owner was in danger of being trampled, immediately rushed towards her. The cow was not going to give up the intention of trampling Fiona to death, but the horse beat the enraged animal with its hooves until it retreated.

A male gorilla rescued a child who had fallen into an animal enclosure

Everyone knows that appearances are deceiving. This rule works great for animals like gorillas. Contrary to popular belief, these animals are quite peaceful, which cannot be said by looking at their formidable appearance.

An amazing story associated with a gorilla named Jumbo happened at the Jersey Island Zoo in the UK.

A boy named Levan fell into a closed enclosure with gorillas. At the same time, the child received a serious skull injury and several fractures of the limbs. A large male from a group of gorillas immediately rushed to the aid of the victim.

Jumbo came close to the child and began to throw aside the sharp stones, near which the boy was lying, so that he would not get hurt. As soon as Levan came to his senses, he got scared and started crying.

Jumbo immediately jumped up and began to lead a group of gorillas that had gathered nearby, away from the child. Thus, the rescuers were able to freely enter the enclosure and take the boy away.

Elephant saves girl from tsunami

Elephants are known to be very intelligent animals, so they have an honorable role in saving human lives. One of the most significant cases of human rescue by this giant animal occurred in Thailand during the 2004 tsunami.

Eight-year-old girl Amber Manson, who at that moment was on the beach, was rescued by a 4-year-old elephant.

As soon as a huge wave hit the shore, the elephant grabbed the girl with his trunk, put her on his back, and ran towards the nearest hill.

When the water closed around them, and the waves began to roll on the hill itself, the animal carefully covered the girl with its body from each next blow of the elements. If Amber had stayed on the beach, by herself or with her parents, her inevitable death would have awaited her.

Dolphin saves surfer from shark

Surfer David Rastovich owes his life, like many other divers, swimmers and surfers, to the smartest animals on the planet - dolphins.

Once David was swimming on his board in the ocean, waiting for a suitable wave, when suddenly he saw a dolphin right next to him. The animal feverishly twisted circles around the athlete.

The next second, David saw a shark heading straight for him. The attack was inevitable when suddenly the dolphin sharply hit the shark in the side with its nose, and it immediately retreated, succumbing to the harsh pressure of the unexpected defender.

I must say that this was the first time in the life of an athlete when he saw a shark so close in front of him. Undoubtedly, if not for the intervention of the dolphin, this story could have ended very badly for David.

There is hardly a person in Runet who has not heard about this wonderful story. In the suburbs of Chelyabinsk, in early December, the temperature dropped to -35 ºC. Many cats at this time of the year hide under heated cars, hiding from the frost. Was no exception and a seven-month-old kitten, hiding under the car. The car drove off, but the cat could not move - his paws were frozen into the ice.

In less than a few hours, the cat would have frozen to death, but, fortunately, people passing by came to his aid. It took several buckets of warm water to melt the ice that bound the paws and tail of the cat.

Cat Sema became a real celebrity after his miraculous rescue - he even got into the program "Let them talk." After the incident, the cat had to amputate the tail, but the paws remained intact. The animal found an owner in Moscow and now lives in a warm apartment.

Bald penguin and wetsuit

A bald female penguin named "Wonder Twin" from the SeaWorld park in Orlando (Florida, USA) survived a serious illness, as a result of which she lost all her feathers.

Penguins cannot live without feathers - their heat exchange is disturbed, they lose their ability to swim and quickly die from illness or become easy prey for predators. But the staff of the center did not leave the girl in trouble and sewed a special wetsuit for her. In it, she can lead a normal life: swim and sleep.

The suit does not restrict movement at all, so, most likely, the little penguin no longer even notices it.

Fat squirrel stuck in sewer manhole

In Munich, a special operation was recently held to rescue ... squirrels. It is not known how she managed to get stuck in the manhole cover.

At first, the rescuers tried to pull the animal out by generously lubricating it with olive oil. But the plan failed - the squirrel turned out to be too well-fed. Finally the team decided to lift the lid, and — good luck! - the animal slipped out from the other side.

The rescued animal turned out to be a male. He was named Olivio after the oil that played a significant role in his salvation. Now Olivio is in an animal shelter. According to the German Association for the Protection of Squirrels, he already feels well, eats nuts and sleeps a lot.

Gypsum for a hamster's foot

At the veterinary center in Petrozavodsk, the doctors performed a real miracle: they did not shy away from difficulties and took on a difficult case. The rodent arrived at the clinic in a deplorable state - the baby was limping and clearly did not feel very well. Doctor Maria Firsova put a splint on him.

On their page, the doctors wrote that after the operation, the hamster “was clearly at a loss”, but was silently indignant: he simply “began to silently walk around the box.”

Tram cat

Another stray cat was lucky not to freeze thanks to human kindness. The cat also decided to bask under the vehicle, only this time there was a train instead of a car. It was in Canada, and the thermometer dropped to 40 degrees.

Brad Slator, the conductor, found the furry tramp there while he was doing a routine inspection of the locomotive. “I just wanted to make sure everything was in order,” says Brad on Facebook, “when I suddenly heard such a plaintive cat meow that no one else heard. I shone my flashlight and saw this baby, which was slowly freezing under the ice and snow under the wheels.

The cat is rescued and now lives with Brad, becoming his good friend.

The beak for a parrot was printed on a 3D printer

A team of veterinarians from Brazil helped Gigi's parrot with a real beak. Macaw parrot rescued from poachers: his beak was severely deformed, he was unable to eat solid food and needed immediate treatment.

Doctors operated on the bird by 3D printing most of its beak. Technology does not stand still!
