Once upon a time, I myself was searching for information on how to protect my hair during heat styling. All I found then was that it is better not to straighten, curl or blow-dry your hair at all; there is no salvation from the terrible fate of damaged hair. After time and having gained my own experience, I realized that the beast is not as terrible as it is painted.
What is thermal protection? First of all, it is a silicone film that prevents moisture from evaporating from the hair when exposed to high temperatures. Thus, the moisture remains in the structure, and the hair does not break and dry out as much. In general, from my bell tower, I can compare thermal protection with thermal paste in a computer processor, which also prevents the latter from overheating, a small lyrical digression. But of course, not all products are equally good, not all are universal. There are quite a lot of thermal protectants in my hair collection, with a wide variety of variations and for different styles.
Thermal protection for hair dryer.
Everything is simplest here. Spray, cream, and almost any silicone leave-in leave-in you love will do. However, there are still some pitfalls.
Types of thermal protection:
- Spray- sprays come with or without fixation. The former often contain alcohol and although they protect, they can dry out thin and fragile hair, especially bleached hair. But there are also sprays with an abundance of silicones, they are usually two-phase, but with proper care they should not dry out. I would recommend this type of thermal protection to girls who have more or less healthy hair, but I don’t trust them.
- Cream- the cream structure is denser than the spray, but the most reliable. Creams are also different: there are heavy and weighing ones, and there are light ones like a fluid. These are just light vibes that are the best option for fragile hair - it won’t dry you out and will protect you as needed when exposed to a hair dryer.
- Oil leave-in washes- this category includes all our favorite leave-in products. As a rule, they do not contain a lot of silicones, but they are perfect for a hair dryer. This is something between a spray and a cream.
What products do I use under my hair dryer?
Keen Hydro 2-phase Spray.

Although I do not use sprays as thermal protection, this does not mean that this method does not have a place. This spray from Keen is two-phase and contains a sufficient amount of silicones. Over time, it does not dry out your hair, but you should not expect the promised moisturizing from it - the effect is purely cosmetic. It doesn't make your hair greasy, the scent is very pleasant and fruity, and the scent doesn't stay on your hair. Softens well and makes combing easier. Such a spray can be an excellent addition to protection from ironing or curling irons, but it is precisely an addition - as the first layer of protection, followed by something else.

These are all the products that I use or have used under the hair dryer. Naturally, they are all applied to damp hair after a moisturizing spray. A couple of minutes after application, you can safely begin drying. I prefer to dry my hair on medium heat, but with high power, because... My hair takes a long time to dry (8-9 hours naturally). I've been doing this every day for a very long time.
Thermal protection for ironing.
As you know, a straightening iron can damage the hair structure much more than a hair dryer. Therefore, in this matter I definitely trust dense and smoothing creams(with the exception of one remedy, but more on that below). The biggest mistake is to use a spray or light fluid as thermal protection under the iron. No matter how expensive your spray is, it won't protect your hair that well. Another category of mass market products, they are also not worth protecting your hair from ironing.
All heat protectants are applied immediately before styling. That is, if you have washed your hair and are going to dry it and then straighten your hair, apply it immediately to damp hair. The product is much easier to distribute this way and it won’t disappear while you dry your hair with a hairdryer. But if you wash your hair at night, it’s better not to apply anything at all (except maybe a moisturizing spray). It is better to apply in the morning, 10 minutes before the morning. This way the fresh layer of product will be thoroughly protected. Also, thermal protection in no way replaces care. She is not a care product at all, she is a barrier made of silicones.

I recently purchased this cream to replace my favorite Kaaral Pink Up (which you can read about ). The cream has a medium thick consistency and smells of lemon. It's easy to apply once you get used to it. At first it may be difficult to find the right amount, but this can be solved with practice. You need to apply this cream by stretching it with your palms along the strands. It is absorbed quite quickly and makes it easier for the ironing plates to glide over the strands. Smoothes out and weighs down considerably. Gives hair shine. And actually protects them. I can safely use the iron every day (if it weren’t for my laziness) and my hair remains in excellent condition the entire time. By the way, the consumption is more than economical - it lasts me more than a year, but once a year I throw it away and take a new one, since the shelf life ends after opening and the cream begins to dry out a little. Along with Pink Up, these creams are my favorites. I always come back to them, no matter what else I try. Of the minuses, I can say that due to the abundance of silicones, the cream is not so easily washed off, that is, it accumulates in the hair. But this is easy to fix if you thoroughly rinse the entire length, which I do periodically. Kerastase cream... Oh, how I once dreamed about it. It has a thick consistency and the aroma of expensive perfume. Mine, as you probably already understood, is from the Disciplines series. As my practice has shown, it needs to be applied a lot, much more than, for example, Kaaral, otherwise it makes the hair dry and unkempt in appearance. However, if you don’t skimp on quantity, it will show itself in all its glory. Not only does your hair straighten more easily, it straightens almost perfectly. I almost never straighten my ends particularly diligently; nevertheless, they are more susceptible to the harmful effects of hot temperatures, so with it they seem to straighten themselves. One light movement of the iron and an even sheet of hair is ready. There is also a minus to this - the volume of the hair is greatly reduced, it does not become greasy, but it takes on the appearance of a single substance so much that it seems to the eye that there is half as much hair. It is simply pointless to take such thermal protection and use it under a hair dryer; it will not show any effect. It also doesn't work well when applied to dry hair.

The oil has a slightly perceptible fragrance, I would call it a salon scent. It is quite liquid and spreads easily. Despite the manufacturer's recommendations, I don't like it at all under a hair dryer. I apply it to dry hair and straighten it after 2 minutes. Then the oil gives protection, shine, smoothness, and friability to the hair. But at the same time there is no weight, no fat content, oil does not take away volume. It does not dry out over time, but rather seems to restore. Just look at the composition, which is replete with oils and extracts, and you can say that this is not just thermal protection or silicone oil, this is real care.

Choosing thermal protection for your iron is actually not difficult, you just need to look at the composition. 5 silicones is good, but more (for example 7-8) is even better. But for myself at the moment I still choose Kaaral.

Now we have reached the most difficult category. Thermal protection for a curling iron is a thing that, on the one hand, should provide excellent protection, since the curling iron heats each section of the hair quite strongly, and on the other hand, should not weigh it down so that the curls do not straighten ahead of time. Thermal protection under the curling iron is applied in the same way as under the iron - immediately before styling. I have allocated only 2 funds for myself at the moment. And to be honest, I didn’t really look for it, since I rarely do curls.
