Now let's move on to construction materials, without which the lounger will not turn into a spacious bag. These components are also easy to find in any store offering accessories for homemade sewing products.

Handle tapes. Depending on your personal preference, you can change them to laces, slings, or strips of fabric. It is worth choosing tight, non-stretchy handles so that they do not cause discomfort while wearing.
Foam rubber. It will add softness to our blanket, which is very important if you are relaxing on a rocky beach. Foam rubber 1 centimeter thick would be ideal.
Lightning. In this case, you will need a detachable one to easily detach and fasten the walls, turning the beach and picnic blanket into a bag for personal belongings.
Pins and needles for sewing.
Good tailor's scissors. If there are none, then you can use ordinary stationery, in whose abilities you are confident.

Before creativity begins

It's time to cut out the blanks that we will use later. To do this, cut out a pair of identical rectangles with a width of about 70 centimeters from fabrics of two colors. The length is the factory length, which is the length of the fabric roll: usually about 150 centimeters.

We will also cut out several rectangles for pockets from the outer and inner fabrics, the sizes of which you can adjust yourself. We cut the slings for the handles to about 60 centimeters each. In addition, we trim the zippers, the length of which should not exceed 1/4 of the length of the entire rug.

Don’t forget about the foam rubber, which we also prepare for the stitching process. We will need about four rectangles, the total length of which will easily fit into our beach blanket.

Under the noise of a sewing machine

Now we begin the long-awaited period of sewing all the pieces together. In order not to confuse you, we will describe all the necessary actions step by step, thereby facilitating the process of visual perception of information:

First, let's place all the accessories on the outside of the bag: to do this, spread the fabric along its entire length on a smooth surface, removing any unwanted folds and folds that have formed. Now you can attach the handles by taking them along their full length. We place them exactly in the center, leaving a distance between the lines of about 25-30 centimeters. We pin everything with pins, check the symmetry with a ruler and stitch it manually or using a sewing machine. We do the same on the reverse side.
Sew a pocket of the same color onto the outside. To do this, take a rectangle blank, the width of which should not exceed 1/4 of our bedspread, grind the edges, bending them 1 centimeter and, having attached them to the base in advance, sew the pocket.
It's time to place the zippers that we have already prepared in advance: we will divide them into two parts and place them on the outside of the bag. They should lie so that the side from which we will insert the lock faces the center of the product. Be sure to baste the zippers with sewing pins and check the functionality of the device. If everything is done correctly, the lock will easily turn our bag into a large lounger. Don’t forget to sew the locks using a sewing machine, carefully securing the ends.

Second side

It's time to sew the second part to our bed. To do this, prepare the fabric by laying it out on a flat surface in advance, and sew on two pockets for personal items, folding the edges.

Now we combine the two parts: this is very easy to do, since all the preparatory stages are already ready. We place these two parts with the wrong side facing us so that the right sides of both fabrics meet inside the product. Carefully machine stitch around the entire perimeter of the blanket, leaving one of the short sides untouched.

After this, we turn the resulting “bag” inside out, thereby preparing it for filling. We take one of the four pieces of foam rubber, insert it into the finished product to the very end and stitch the fabric next to it to fix the filler. Also, the place of stitching can be determined based on the zipper: it ends in the same place.

When all the filling has already been fixed with seams, bending the edges of the fabric, we sew the last open hole, carefully adjusting the handles of our finished rug.

Strength test

Now that the beach blanket and the bag are ready at the same time, we can check the performance of our creation. To be honest, once assembled, it’s hard to believe that a couple of moments ago a wonderful beach accessory was lying under us, boldly replacing expensive store-bought sunbeds.

In addition, when our locks are fastened, we have a real large and roomy handbag in front of us, which can easily fit a bottle of water, a couple of tubes of cream, a magazine or book, a wallet with cash, a phone, keys and a lot of other things that you definitely can’t take with you in a regular rug.

The beach blanket, a photo of which you can find in our article, is an excellent alternative to any purchased rug. And such products certainly won’t cost you as much as a homemade option.

If you are not confident in creating the pattern correctly, you can use a ready-made one: this will reduce the time for sewing and increase the accuracy of the cutting details.

To make a bag look like it came from a boutique, every step must be executed flawlessly. When working, it is necessary to use sewing pins, matching the seams, eliminating fabric overflow. You should not expect that all defects can be straightened out with an iron: this is not the case.

All excess needs to be trimmed off.

If the fabric is new, before starting work it is better to iron it (iron the material with steam) to prevent shrinkage in the future. Otherwise, after washing, the finished product may become deformed, which will affect the appearance.

To prevent the product from becoming deformed after washing, when cutting it is important to observe the longitudinal and transverse sides: new fabric almost always shrinks in length. It is not difficult to correctly determine the direction: the textiles stretch somewhat in width.

You should not create a frame from cardboard: the beach bag may get wet, which will lead to the paper becoming soggy. It is better to reinforce the bottom with a double layer of fabric.

Patterns

In cases where an interesting style is conceived, it is better to use a ready-made pattern. This will make it easier to calculate material consumption and make the work more accurate. Any pattern depends on the design idea.

Depending on the chosen option, it differs in shape (in the form of a rectangle, semicircle, trapezoid, square, with a ring, in boho style, in the form of a T-shirt, a sack bag).

Master class

Sewing a beach bag yourself is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. To make the accessory, you will need a top material measuring 1.10 m long and 1.35 m wide and the same amount of finishing (made of natural fabric). Textiles that are too thin and soft do not hold their shape; it is better to use coarse material. The glue will take at least 4 meters, since almost all the parts will have to be glued. Threads are needed in tone (for sewing) and contrast (for stitching).

For this sewing, you do not need a pattern: you can fold the fabric in half widthwise and trim the edges to symmetry: when folded, you get a square with a side of 55 cm. Mark 5 cm from the length and cut off the resulting strip. Then each part is cut along the fold: you get two parts 0.5 m (height) x 0.55 m (width of the future bag) and 5 cm x 55 cm.

The trim is cut out according to the same principle, but in addition to two large and two small parts, two more blanks measuring 25 x 55 cm are cut out (this will be the decor of the sides).

The adhesive is cut separately for each part with the exception of decorative parts, otherwise the thickness of the textile will be uneven. It should yield 4 pieces 50 x 55 cm and four 5 x 55 cm.

After all the blanks are cut out, interlining (adhesive) is glued to them from the wrong side. If there is excess, the adhesive is trimmed.

A decorative insert of finishing measuring 25 x 55 cm is applied to the base part at a distance of 22 cm from the bottom with the wrong side and adjusted at a distance of 1 cm from the edge. Then the trim is folded over the face, ironed and a finishing stitch is applied with contrasting threads. If the design includes double finishing lines, it is advisable to follow this technique throughout the entire finish.

The work must be done carefully so that the overall appearance is not damaged. Having sewn on the finishing parts, they are checked for symmetry, after which they are folded with the right sides inward, pinned on the sides and bottom, and stitched on a sewing machine. The seam width is 0.8 - 1 cm. You can use the presser foot as a guide. For greater reliability, the seam is made double.

I have this bag:
you will need:
fabric for the rug itself: 1.6 m of brightly colored calico, 1.4 m wide;
thin padding polyester 1.6 m wide 1.4;
2 detachable zippers to match the fabric, 40 cm long;
1.4 m of strap for handles.
Cutting (finished 0.7 x 1.6 m):
rug - 1 piece with fold (0.7 x 1.6 m)
synthetic padding - 1 piece (0.7 x 1.6 m)

Fold the synthetic padding together with the top piece and baste along the edge.

Make handles and sew them according to the marks.

Fold the rug along the fold with its face inward and stitch along the perimeter, leaving 20 cm unstitched.

Turn the rug inside out, sweep the edges and lay a finishing stitch around the perimeter at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from the edge. At a distance of 15 cm from the edge along and every 40 cm across, lay relief stitches.

Fold the zipper and the bottom side of the rug face inwards and stitch from mark A to mark B.
I was thinking that I could double the width. Then, when folding lengthwise, first bend the rug. The bedspread will be narrower 1.40 cm wide, not 70 cm.
