Crocheted linen patterns. Knitting from linen yarn

We knit from linen.

Linen, blue flower,
How much torment you are destined.
They crush you, shake you and wet you,
From a blade of grass creating a canvas.

Everything in you was doomed to die
Only a part should survive
To become a precious fabric,
What is white and thin, and strong.

Shake me, shake me, God!
Knead like green flax.
So that I become my destiny too
Turned into a cloth of grass.

(Alexander Solodovnikov)

Linen yarn is durable and highly hygroscopic, does not shrink when washed. In hot and very hot weather, linen products are preferable to cotton ones. But it’s not so easy to find models designed specifically for linen yarn. Let's fill this gap!
Linen products are very durable - what you knit now, you can wear for many seasons, enjoying the pleasant natural coolness of linen yarn. Linen fiber is difficult to dye and is most often found in natural gray-beige colors.This yarn is best suited for knitting summer clothes.

Linen is considered a very durable yarn. Things knitted from linen yarn absorb moisture very well and dry just as well. Linen yarn does not shrink or stretch when washed, does not deteriorate at high temperatures. True linen is difficult to dye or bleach. Therefore, most often, linen yarn is found in natural, gray-beige tones. Linen products are very comfortable in hot weather. By its composition, linen yarn is dense and inelastic. Cotton is less durable than linen. Because linen yarn is inelastic, so it has its own requirements for knitwear. It is not recommended to knit products with a relief pattern, it is better to choose openwork patterns. From it you can knit comfortable and practical products for spring and summer.

They knit from linen and on machines.

Olga writes:

Well, of course, you can’t knit an elastic band from flax. Braids too ... And the press most likely will not work ...
Linen also does not look good in a slip because of its heterogeneous structure...
Just some guard. What is knitted from this incredibly environmentally friendly yarn?
1. Smooth (if the yarn does not mow)
2. Openwork (only simple and with a small number of holes). It is better to wax the yarn and knit at a high density.
3. Punch. Flax can be easily ennobled with viscose thread.
And if the linen is on a reel, you can make a beautiful melange with softer yarn. Or link with plating.

Reviews of knitters from Osinki:

FlyZZ:

From my experience, linen blended with cotton or viscose is better than 100% linen. The thing will be softer, knitting is more pleasant and faster. But you can and 100%, depends on the model and technology. Flax usually becomes softer and more pleasant in the process of wearing and washing, this is its main feature, good for models for the hot sun - things will be very comfortable to wear. 100% linen is not very "liked" by a knitting machine, due to the inelasticity of the thread. But simple models pass normally. My bitter experience was with linen / cotton yarn, where linen tow was added and knitting a jumper (thin and thin crochet), I could not wear it - it pricks terribly and itches all over! Now, when buying a similar yarn, I apply it to the neck, on the wrist it is not always clear.

romcya:

Knitted from Kamteks linen (100% linen). It looks harsh, but after the first wash it becomes softer than cotton :) I knitted it for the baby and myself, everyone is happy :)

Antonio:

I read in a magazine about linen yarn:
Fill the container with hot water, add detergent. Dip the knitted product for half an hour so that it is completely covered with water, rinse in cold and hot water until the water becomes clear. Rinse for the last time in hot water, wring out, wrap in a plastic bag and put in the freezer overnight or until won't freeze completely. Rinse the product in hot water until the ice crystals dissolve; wring out, story, or spread out horizontally to dry.
They say it will get softer.

Delen:

Linen is the best thread for summer things! And not at all hard, and not worth a stake, and pleasant to the body.

Dagg:

And from 100% linen, you can knit heirlooms, i.e. there is no demolition. I have a few things crocheted in loin technique. Already tired, but like new. We write no-shrinkage, no-stretch marks. The thorns were very quickly eliminated in the process of wearing and washing.

Wet-heat treatment of knitted products and samples

You have knitted the first pattern or a simple piece. The columns and rows of knitting on the canvas may not lie very evenly. Do not rush to get upset.

Steam the knitting correctly, this will give it a finished, well-groomed look. When choosing a pattern or hook size for work, make the final decision by comparing stripped samples. Calculate the details according to the working sample - this is a small square or rectangle knitted with a working thread, correctly selected hook and pattern and carefully steamed. Finished parts of the product must also be steamed before assembly. I do not recommend ironing a crocheted fabric, regardless of pattern or material.

Only products made from wool or cotton-linen can be steamed, products made from mixed and artificial fibers are steamed in a cold way.

How to perform steam treatment?

Only voluminous products - most often these are finishing elements - are treated with steam coming from the spout of a boiling kettle and straightened by hand. In other cases, use an iron and a damp linen cloth. It is linen, because it well protects the workpiece from exposure to high temperatures and, holding a sufficient amount of moisture, gives good steam. At the same time, the iron is heated to the maximum temperature.

With a damp, lightly wrung linen cloth, cover the sample or part, laid with the wrong side up. With a hot iron, run over the part, almost without touching the fabric, completely holding the iron “on weight”. Over each treated area, iron several times, without bringing the fabric to complete drying.

Knitting samples and some details can be processed without fastening the edges. Steam working samples and individual motifs by threading thin knitting needles along the edges. After steaming such a sample a little, lift the fabric and straighten the knitting by pulling on two opposite knitting needles, first in width, then in length. Steam again. After removing the cloth, leave the sample to dry completely.

Steam the details of the products in the same way, but the edges are fixed with pins or by typing straight sections of the details on the knitting needles and only rounded ones are pinned with pins after 10-15 mm. Before that, lay a harsh thread along the contour of the part with a seam “over the edge”. When attaching the part with pins, stick them under the stitches of the thread. Such a precaution is not superfluous - it will protect the edge from deformation and possible rust spots.

You can not fix the part along the edge of the paper pattern. Transfer its outline with a pencil to a white cloth. Match the color of the pencil to the color of the yarn. If you decide to take knitting seriously, allocate a special piece of white fabric for this work, this may be part of an old sheet. When you have finished processing a few parts, boil this fabric with bleach.

Lay the fabric with the contour of the part on the ironing mat, attach the part to it inside out. First, pin the patterns at the main working points, and then attach all the lines one by one, placing the pins at least 1-1.5 cm apart. Pay attention to the details, knitted with patterns with a large number of air loops - they require especially careful wet-heat treatment.

Products knitted from threads such as acrylic, containing synthetic fibers or made with a relief pattern are treated differently. Pin the details along the contour of the pattern, cover with a damp terry towel. When the towel is almost dry, remove it and leave the piece to dry completely.

Recently, a new fashion trend has appeared among needlewomen - knitting from linen yarn. The reasons for this trend are clear: linen yarn is an environmentally friendly yarn that does not cause allergies. Products made from such yarn are worn for a long time and over time they practically do not lose their original appearance, regardless of how many times the item has been washed. If you have never knitted from linen yarn, do not know all its advantages and have not seen a single thing knitted from linen yarn, then we advise you to read this article to the end.

What is linen yarn

Yarn 100 linen

The yarn, the composition of which is 100% linen, is characterized as natural linen yarn. From such yarn you can make the same as in online store, knitted vest, sundresses, jackets and other outerwear, not counting napkins and other textile accessories for interior decoration.

In addition to this traditional yarn, you can also find mixed linen yarn in needlework stores.

Yarn linen and bamboo

Currently, yarn manufacturers have greatly expanded the range of linen yarn. There is yarn, which includes linen and bamboo. Different manufacturers have different percentages of these two components, but if we are talking about linen, and not about bamboo yarn, then flax should be more than 50-60%.

Yarn cotton-linen and linen with viscose

There is linen yarn, which also includes cotton and viscose. In this case, in percentage terms, viscose and cotton will prevail over flax (for example, flax can be 20%, but cotton and viscose 40% each).

Linen yarn colored

Do not think that linen yarn is undyed yarn. Modern production technologies allow not only high-quality dyeing of linen fibers and making plain linen yarn of various colors, but also producing section-dyed or melange linen yarn, thanks to which we have the opportunity to knit not only comfortable, but also fashionable clothes from linen yarn.

What to knit with linen yarn

From linen yarn, which also includes bamboo fibers, with the help of a hook (or even machine knitting), wonderful summer things will come out, including for children. No wonder this yarn among needlewomen is characterized as “summer yarn”.

If you are just learning to knit, then with the help of linen yarn you will get great napkins. Having got the hang of it, soon you will be able to knit even a tablecloth from motifs, well, or like this knitted women's jacket, buy which can be found in the Mokusha online store.

As you can see, anything can be knitted from linen yarn. Not only napkins, tablecloths, curtains, but also tops, sundresses, sweaters, jackets, cardigans and even suits!

For many centuries until today, the popularity of linen yarn has only increased. The very first products made of this material date back to the 8th century. BC e. Raw materials for the manufacture of this type of yarn are obtained from flax stalks. They are soaked and the outer shell is separated to extract the inner fibers, then dried, combed, spun and wound into thread. The result is a shiny and durable yarn. Because the fibers of this plant are heavy in nature, very fine threads are spun from them. Linen yarn is rarely used in its pure form. It is often blended with cotton, viscose, acrylic, or other fibers to add extra softness.

It is interesting. Linen fabric is considered the oldest of those known to mankind. Its age is about 10 thousand years. Many centuries ago, such fabric was used to make clothes so thin that it easily passed through a wedding ring.

Properties of linen yarn

Among the advantages of linen yarn:

  • high strength;
  • non-susceptibility to deformation;
  • fast drying after washing;
  • the presence of bactericidal properties;
  • hypoallergenicity;
  • hygroscopicity;
  • ease of care.

The disadvantages of such yarn include increased stiffness, a tendency to wrinkle and resistance to dyeing. However, in knitwear, they are not too noticeable. The rough texture of linen softens after several washes, and natural shades only emphasize the beauty of the twist of the thread.

Features of the care of linen products

Knitted items from this material practically do not stretch even when washed hot, and are also resistant to shrinkage, deformation and loss of elasticity. This is prevented by both the physical properties of flax and the addition of other fibers that improve the quality of the thread.

However, it is best to wash linen by hand, using soap shavings or hair shampoo. It is impossible to squeeze a clean product by hand or in a drum, it should be laid out on a flat horizontal surface and let the water drain naturally. In this position, the thing is left to dry completely. You can use a towel to absorb excess moisture. Knitwear should be stored only folded, and instead of ironing, clothes can be slightly steamed.

What to knit from linen

Linen yarn is ideal for making summer clothes. It makes excellent tunics, tops and dresses. Crocheted models look spectacular. A thin twisted thread looks organic in products made using the technique of Irish lace. From thicker yarn, you can knit capes and shawls with knitting needles. Even a simple front surface or garter stitch will look beautiful if you use linen yarn with a melange effect.

Advice. It is recommended to wash the product just knitted from linen yarn, this will help it become softer and much more pleasant to wear.

Assortment of linen yarn

Yarn with the addition of flax fibers is found among the products of many well-known manufacturers. In particular, it can be found in the assortment of the Italian brand Lana Grossa. Spectacular LINARTE COLOR in colorful colors can be used to create summer clothes, while LINARTE yarns with the addition of viscose, cotton and polyamide are suitable for knitting scarves, shawls or stoles. The English brand Rowan offers a yarn with 100% linen content, which is suitable for creating a summer knitted wardrobe.

This type of creativity is really similar to knitting a net, because. the canvas consists of square cells: empty and filled. The alternation of these cells forms many simple and complex fillet knitting patterns.

Is filet crochet suitable for beginners?

More likely no than yes.

  1. Firstly, you need to knit the fillet fabric tightly so that the holes in the posts and air loops do not spoil the overall picture of the pattern. So it is worth taking a hook at least half a size smaller than the manufacturer recommends for this type of yarn.
  2. Secondly, there is a secret in knitting double crochets. The hook must be inserted in the middle of the upper part of the double crochet of the previous row, and not under two half loops, as usual.
  3. Third, you can't be wrong. If you are inattentive to the pattern, then you will have to bandage your flaws. And that annoys a lot of people. And you need to constantly count the cells. Those. attentiveness and accuracy are in second place after skill.

Despite the fact that loin knitting patterns are built on only 2 elements, there are a huge number of options for these patterns. If you still decide to try yourself in this type of needlework, then we advise you to start with small napkins or motifs. Fortunately, the Internet is replete with a variety of loin knitting patterns.

For those who decide to immediately take on knitting a big thing: tablecloths or dresses, we will give some tips.

Be sure to knit a sample of at least 20 * 20 cm from the threads of your choice.

Measure the length and width of the sample according to the filet knitting pattern. "Mock" at will over the sample:

  • wash
  • wring out
  • straighten
  • dry
  • steam with an iron

Filet crochet, which threads and tools to choose

Experienced craftswomen recommend knitting tablecloths and napkins made of cotton or linen. Natural yarn lasts longer, although it is more difficult to knit from it, this is a fact. Linen or cotton can be washed in the machine, bleached, it doesn’t matter. But synthetics can be easily burned with an iron, and all the work is gone. The thickness of the hook is better to take about 1 mm. Thicker there is a chance that the drawing will be rough. Although this recommendation applies to small and elegant things (lace, napkins, curtains, towel canvas). Large things can be knitted with thicker tools.

Filet knitting is very addictive, and if you like it, then this is for a long time. We have collected a large selection of things and crochet loin patterns. We hope you enjoy this trend in needlework.
