Do-it-yourself didactic felt toys. DIY felt toys with patterns for beginners

How to sew felt with your own hands? This material has won the hearts of needlewomen all over the world, and products made from it can bring warmth and comfort to every home!

We will tell you about the varieties of this material, how to sew felt with your own hands and how to care for finished felt works.

Types of felt

What is felt, and what kind of felt is available in stores? Felt is obtained after the fibers are compressed into a dense mass under the influence of hot steam. Then it is cut into sheets of the required size or rolled into rolls. Felt is made in a similar way, but the thinnest fibers or fluff are used for felt.

What made felt so popular? First of all, ease of processing: felt is very easy to sew or glue, and its edges do not fray. This material looks the same on the back and front sides, and is also available in a wide range of colors. Felt is made not only from natural wool. It can be made from synthetic, man-made or mixed fibers.

  • Wool felt soft and easy to change shape, it is perfect for jewelry, interior decoration and various accessories. But after washing, wool can shrink and its edges become shaggy over time; in addition, the color palette of felt made from natural wool is limited.
  • Viscose felt It's also quite soft, it's slightly silky and smooth. It is well suited for toys and decorations because it has good strength and holds its shape. However, it can shrink if not properly cared for.
  • Mixed felt contains up to 60% wool, and the remaining fibers can be acrylic or viscose. It is also soft and therefore does not hold its shape well. It has a smooth, beautiful surface and is a good choice for sewing soft toys and small crafts.
  • Acrylic felt slightly shiny and slippery, it is sensitive to high temperatures and can become shaggy. But acrylic felt is easy to clean, does not fade or shrink, and holds its shape well. You can use it to sew toys, accessories, and also use it for appliqués.
  • Felt made from polyester fibers It has the greatest wear resistance and strength, it does not fade, and also holds its shape perfectly. Use this felt for things that need to withstand constant stress (wallets, board games, puppet theater, etc.)

In the store you can buy felt of various thicknesses, starting from 1 mm. Thin felt is convenient for cutting out small parts for appliqués and sewing small toys (for example, Christmas tree decorations). Thick felt (4-5 mm) holds its shape well, it is perfect as a base for sheets of an educational book, decorative panel or bag.

Most often, felt is used for sewing toys and accessories. Soft children's toys, New Year's pendants, educational books, interior decorations will definitely please children! Women will appreciate felt jewelry, which can be made in different styles. Bags and cases for modern technology, covers for books and notepads will be an excellent gift for anyone who values individuality and handmade work.

Full-length clothing is rarely made from felt, except that vests or children's sundresses can be made from soft felt. Most often, sewn applique made of felt is used in clothing.

Sewing from felt

How to sew felt with your own hands? This is one of the easiest materials to sew. You can even sew felt with a simple basting stitch, and even glue some parts!

Use regular polyester threads for sewing, and for embroidery, take high-quality floss in two or more folds. For hand stitches you will need a thin needle with a sharp tip. To use a sewing machine, take a needle for thick fabrics.

An overlock stitch “over the edge” (“loop stitch”) not only connects the parts, but also decorates the felt product. Make sure that the distance between stitches is the same, especially if you are working with contrasting threads.

The edges of the felt can be trimmed with curly scissors, and holes of different sizes can be made using punches, which are used to install eyelets.

If you need to glue a felt piece, apply it very carefully. Do not allow the glue to completely saturate the felt, otherwise stains may appear on the front surface. If the felt product will not be washed, you can use double-sided tape to glue small fragments.

To fill soft toys or other felt products, it is best to use holofiber, padding polyester, padding polyester or polyethylene granules.

Care

Felt items can be cleaned with a soft brush, and, for example, pillowcases or large panels can be vacuumed.

Local dirt (eg on edges) can be cleaned with a damp sponge and a small amount of carpet detergent.

If you want to wash a felt product, use warm (no higher than 40 degrees) water, a delicate liquid detergent and hand wash. The product must not be squeezed or twisted. Let the water drain, pat dry with a towel and place on a flat surface.

Here is a list of basic materials that will be useful in your work:

  • The main thing is, of course, felt. Felt needs to be thin, 1 - 1.2 mm. Korean felt made from eco-polyester has proven itself well, but you can use any other one. Just pay attention to the density of the material. If the felt is loose, it will be difficult to sew small toys from it. If you plan to sew three-dimensional figures, like me, then it is advisable to have both soft and hard felt. The toys themselves can be sewn from any of them, but it is more convenient to make small parts from hard felt. If you are going to design the alphabet in the form of an alphabet book, then the toys need to be made flat from hard felt.
  • Filler for toys. As a filler, you can use synthetic fiber, holofiber, or synthetic winterizer. I usually use synthetic fluff; it is lightweight, does not cake, and toys stuffed with it do not lose their shape. Cereals can be used as a filler. For the development of a child's tactile perception. Just before use, they need to be pierced in the oven to prevent the introduction of bugs.
  • Beads for eyes, beads and other decorative elements
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun or textile glue. These two types of glue are non-toxic and do not have a strong unpleasant odor. As a last resort, you can use moment crystal glue, although its use is not advisable when making children's toys.
  • It is also advisable to have a disappearing fabric marker in order to transfer patterns to the fabric and make the necessary notes. In extreme cases, you can use a helium pen. It is clearly visible on both light and dark fabrics, and it is much easier to wash off felt than a regular ballpoint pen.
  • Threads. To sew toys from felt, you can use floss threads; their advantage is a rich range of colors, but ordinary cotton sewing threads are also suitable. The main thing is that they match the fabric, in which case the seams will be less noticeable. I use both types of thread. I didn't notice much of a difference. As an option, you can make a contrasting edge, but just keep in mind that the seams then must be even and neat.
  • Velcro, magnets.
  • Bells, rattles (if you plan to sew them into the letters).

Rules for working with felt

Felt is a compressed material. It is usually produced in sheet or roll form. In appearance and to the touch it is somewhat reminiscent of felt, only not so rough, because the raw material for its production is taken from undercoat or delicate fluff. Felt can also be made from synthetic and semi-synthetic materials. It is best to make New Year's tree decorations from felt. The material has different sheet thicknesses, so you can choose the one you need for a particular product. The edges do not require processing, and the huge color spectrum allows you to create the most beautiful toys.

  1. For work, felt sheets with a thickness of about 1-1.5 mm are used. Only with such thickness will the toy be elegant.
  2. For this, give preference to felt with the addition of viscose or acrylic.
  3. The needle must be sharp. This will make it easier to pierce the flaps.
  4. Small parts can be glued together using PVA. But at the same time, control the amount of glue squeezed out so that it does not leak through the fabric.
  5. You can also use a heat gun.
  6. If you plan to make three-dimensional figures, do not forget about the filler - padding polyester or holofiber.
  7. To transfer the design to the fabric, you can use chalk, a self-disappearing marker or a gel pen.

It is not recommended to use cotton wool or batting as a filler, because such material, protruding through the seams, makes the toy untidy.

Knowing all the nuances of working with the material, you can start working. Let's look at how to sew Christmas tree decorations from felt with your own hands using frequently used patterns.

Props for creativity

To make New Year's decorations you will need:

  • felt scraps;
  • scissors;
  • floss threads with which you will connect elements or decorate them with stitches;
  • PVA glue.
  • heat gun;
  • filler;
  • various decor, such as braid, lace, beads, beads, rhinestones, sequins, buttons and other small items;
  • You can use wooden die-cuts on which the cut out figures will be glued.

Christmas toys

As a rule, felt Christmas tree decorations are made of two types: simple, flat and voluminous. In the first option, you should simply cut out felt figures along the contour of the pattern and decorate them. In the second case, the base is cut out in two copies, and then the pieces are decorated and stitched together.
The figurine is stuffed with filler such as padding polyester or holofiber. Both variations of the sewing method are interesting and unique.

You can choose any figure you like as a pattern.

For example, from such simple patterns of felt Christmas tree decorations you can get something like this. Very simple, elegant and does not take much time.

You can make a classic version - felt Christmas balls. It’s even easier to make them; you don’t even have to look for patterns. All that is required is imagination.

In the three-dimensional version, the figures turn out to be more interesting.

New Year's stars and snowflakes

What is a Christmas tree without snowflakes or beautiful stars. There are several options for making these Christmas tree decorations from felt with your own hands.

A plump figure will be obtained by sewing together two parts and filling the space between them with padding polyester. The decor is very varied. You can even add beads along the edge.

The resulting stars can simply be glued onto a cardboard or wooden base.

Snowflakes are more difficult to make. The process of cutting them is quite labor-intensive. But if you try, the result will impress you.

By connecting stars, snowflakes or just circles, you can get an interesting version of a garland to decorate a Christmas tree or room.

Another option for making Christmas tree decorations from felt is creating multi-layered figures. All you need is to make felt cutouts of different sizes, and then combine them into one pile, turning them a little relative to each other.

  3. Now fill the boot with cotton through the hole left. You can use holofiber or padding polyester.
  4. A white “edge” of a Christmas stocking is cut out of a white piece of felt. Holly leaves are glued onto one piece using a moment.
  5. All that remains is to place a white ribbon folded in a loop between the fragments, fix it with glue and trim the “edge” with green threads, as if with a machine seam.

TOP 5 Christmas tree toys made of felt

Felt is such a versatile material for creativity that you can create anything from it, and toys made from it are very popular. It is very soft and pleasant to the touch. Its edges do not need to be processed additionally; they hold their shape and do not crumble. It can be sewn on like fabric or glued on like paper.

Another advantage of felt is its rich range of colors. It can be plain or have a light pattern. It is also sold in different thicknesses to create different products - from small parts to large ones. Plain felt does not have a front or back side. Among the many advantages of this material, there is only one disadvantage - it is expensive. But this value is relative.

This article discusses felt toys, diagrams are attached. It will be useful for both beginning needlewomen and more experienced ones.

Choosing felt for toys

Felt is a non-woven item obtained by industrial felting of wool. There are several types of this material in their composition:

  • Pure wool felt. The wool mainly used is from sheep, as well as from rabbits and hares. This is quite expensive material. However, it is the most elastic, opaque, holds the seam well and does not fluff. Also, when creating educational toys from felt with your own hands, the safety indicator is very important. So, toys made of pure wool felt do not ignite easily and do not cause allergies. But there is also a minus here. Toys made from this type of felt must be washed very carefully so that the toy does not become deformed after washing. Pure wool material may shrink.
  • Wool-blend felt. The composition of this material, in addition to wool, also contains an admixture, mainly viscose or acrylic. This type of felt is slightly more affordable than pure wool felt. Also has more variety in color. Felt made from half-wool is softer and not as “prickly” as felt from pure wool. However, this type of material can fade and crumble.
  • Acrylic felt. This is a completely artificial material created from plastic using modern technologies. This also includes eco felt, which is made by recycling plastic bottles. It holds its shape well, does not shrink or become deformed. But the disadvantages of this felt in relation to making toys from it is its easy flammability. It may cause allergic reactions.

Felt also varies in thickness: thinner ones are suitable for small parts of the product, thick ones are ideal for large elements of toys, as a base.

Instructions for making a felt toy with your own hands

Preparing tools

  • First you need to prepare the tools:
  • Felt
  • Scissors (regular and curly)
  • Marker (disappearing or washable)
  • Needle
  • Threads (for stitching and embroidering patterns)
  • Glue
  • Filler (sintepon, holofiber, sponge)
  • Decorative elements

Constructing a pattern

This master class of DIY felt toys for beginners is basic. Any mother who has never done needlework before can handle it. The basic processes of creating a toy will be shown using the example of a simple product in the shape of a panda. For such a toy you will need a sheet of black felt and a couple of sheets of white. When the tools and materials are ready, a pattern is created. Future parts of the toy are cut out on cardboard. Now, using a marker, the details are transferred to the felt.

All elements of the toy are cut out.

Sewing toys

It's time to assemble the toy. Assembly starts from the head. First, the eyes are glued to the face. Using a thread and a needle, the eyebrows and mouth of the future panda are embroidered. Now both parts of the head are taken - the face and the back of the head, and sewn together, while filling the head with padding polyester and sewing the ears.

The remaining parts of the toy are assembled in the same way, according to the detailed diagram. Simple DIY felt toys with patterns are presented below.

Felt is a type of felt, but this material is much higher quality. It is made from the undercoat of various animals, from rabbits to goats.

The scope of its use is extremely wide. For example, once upon a time, nomads who lived in Eurasia made felt coverings for their yurts, carpets, pillows, clothing items, and even equipment for livestock. Due to its durability, it was actively used in military affairs.

It served warriors as chain mail and defended the walls of the city during siege with bows. It was an indispensable material in medicine, blacksmithing and many other areas.

Today they like to use it to create decorative elements, clothing and children's toys.

Its main advantage is that it combines the properties of fabric, paper and wood. It acquired this property thanks to the unique technology of felting wool fibers.

The material can be thick and thin, soft and dense, natural and synthetic. Felt is a dense and lightweight material, it is easy to cut and glue. That is why craftswomen love it, and the variety of colors allows you to create the most intricate toys.

You should choose one type of felt or another only based on the purpose of its use.

Since we are talking about toys made of felt, then it would not be amiss to discuss the varieties of this material that exist today, which will allow needlewomen to make the right choice.

There are several main types of felt:

  • Pure wool
  • Wool blend
  • Acrylic
  • Polyester
  • Viscose

Pure wool felt speaks for itself.

It is 100%, at least 90%, made of natural wool, so it is absolutely safe, environmentally friendly, antibacterial, but it shrinks when washing and steaming, becomes shaggy, is too soft, so it doesn’t hold its shape well, which is extremely strange, because it can be extremely thick.

It is difficult to find this type of felt, as it is quite expensive and is not particularly in demand in stores. It is usually used to make jewelry, accessories and decorative interior details.

Wool blend felt has an even texture, flexible, soft, which is determined by the presence of viscose in its structure. It has a large color palette and reduced cost.

As in the first case, it does not hold its shape well and wrinkles easily. Therefore, it is more often used for the manufacture of small decorative elements.

Acrylic felt obtained from plastic processing. It is 100% synthetic, so you shouldn't expect much from it.

The advantages include a wide color palette, low cost, it does not fade, and does not deform when washed. However, acrylic felt has the shine, squeakiness, and bending properties characteristic of synthetics, which is why it is used extremely rarely for making toys.

Polyester It is highly durable, wear-resistant, holds its shape well, does not lose color or wrinkle, and this felt is soft. Toys made from such felt retain their original appearance for a long time. Even washing is not scary for him. You can find felt in different thicknesses and all kinds of colors.

And the last type is viscose felt, which is known as an accessible, cheap, soft, flexible, smooth, pleasant to the touch, antistatic material.

Viscose is known to have good hygroscopic properties, which is undoubtedly a plus.

Each of these types of felt can be purchased in specialized stores or online. Based on your requirements and wishes, you can choose the most suitable type of material or even combine them.

Educational toys made of felt

Now let's talk directly about felt toys. Parents know that they need to start working on their child’s development as early as possible. And today there are many different toys that help perfectly with this, but they cost a lot.

Why not make such toys yourself? Educational toys made of felt have an unusual texture; they can come in a variety of colors and shapes. It all depends on your imagination.

With the help of such toys you can start learning the letters of the alphabet, numbers, animals or vegetables.

Felt toy “Harvest”

With its help, a child can easily and cheerfully learn a variety of vegetables, fruits, and berries.

The game may be accompanied by parents' explanations of where certain vegetables grow, when they are collected, and how they should be eaten.

To create such a harvest you will need:

  • Multi-colored sheets of felt;
  • Scissors;
  • Needle;
  • Floss threads of different colors;
  • Filler;
  • Velcro.

You can make the pattern of vegetables, fruits and berries yourself, depending on your preferences. Apply the pattern to felt of the appropriate color and cut it out.

Next, you need to attach the two parts together and sew them together, filling them with filler in advance. On the reverse side you can sew Velcro, with the help of which the crop will be “placed” in a basket, also made of felt.

One such game will help a child learn to distinguish colors, remember tastes, and distinguish vegetables from fruits.

Making a touch domino

For this you will need:

  • Various materials for cards;
  • Felt;
  • Scissors;
  • Thread;
  • Needle.

From felt we cut out 2 identical rectangles measuring 6x11 cm. One rectangle will serve as the base, the second - the top.

The upper rectangle should have two holes with a diameter of 4 cm. We cut out 5x5 cm squares from different fabrics. It is important that the number of such cards be in pairs.

You need to lay out two types of fabric on the main rectangle and cover it with a rectangle with holes on top. All that remains is to sew each domino along the perimeter and along the contour of the circles.

This domino develops tactile perception in a child, improves the concept of color, increases attentiveness and promotes thinking. The rules of the game are the same as in classic dominoes, only here you need to match not the number of dots, but circles of identical fabrics.

This can be quite difficult at first if you choose similar shades of colors.

Festive felt toys

What's the best thing about the holidays besides close communication?

Of course present!

And gifts become unforgettable if they are made with your own hands.

For any holiday, you can create amazing holiday toys from felt, which will be the best gift, decoration, or just a pleasant pastime for the whole family.

Felt Christmas wreath

A wreath is considered a classic element of the Christmas holidays, but you can make it yourself and not only from spruce branches, but also from felt.

To make such a wreath you will need:

  • Felt of different colors;
  • Sequins;
  • Scissors;
  • Glue;
  • Cotton swabs;
  • Cardboard: thick and thin;
  • Pen;
  • Needle and thread.

First you need to create decorations for the wreath. To do this, draw a snowflake, felt boots, a mitten and a Christmas tree on thin cardboard.

Elements can be removed and added as desired. We cut them out, apply the patterns to the felt and also cut along the contour. Each element can be additionally decorated with sequins; to do this, just mark the places where you would like to attach the sequins, apply glue using a cotton swab and glue the sequins.

When the work on the decorations is completed, we begin making the base of the wreath. To do this, take thick cardboard and cut out a circle, and in it there is another circle of smaller diameter.

Depending on the size of the wreath, the diameter can be increased or decreased. The cardboard base can be covered with felt or wrapped in fabric at your discretion. Next, we attach the decorations to the wreath and glue them to the base with glue, or you can sew them on with a needle and thread, which will take longer, but is more reliable. And the wreath is ready.

Easter felt garland

A garland will be a decoration for any holiday. As an example, we invite you to pay attention to the Easter garland, which looks very unusual and attractive.

To make such a garland, you need to take pastel-colored felt, from which you need to cut out details for flowers, mugs and eggs.

The flower will consist of three layers of the same felt, only of different diameters. The smallest one is placed on top of the widest flower, and the smallest one is placed on top, and they are all sewn together in the center.

The eggs consist of two layers; if desired, you can use felt of one color on one side and a contrasting one on the other.

The two layers are sewn together around the perimeter. They can be decorated with beads, braid or embroidery. Then the simplest thing remains: all the elements are strung on a thread, and a garland is obtained.

You can make felt garlands for any holiday. For Christmas you can decorate it with snowflakes and Christmas trees, for a birthday with balloons or write the name of the birthday person.

You just need to use your imagination and the result will definitely surprise everyone.

Felt flowers

Although real flowers have a pleasant aroma, they quickly fade. Felt flowers will become a modern and unforgettable element of the interior.

Depending on your skills, you can make violets, roses, chrysanthemums, peonies and many other varieties.

Making these flowers can be a fun time for mother and daughter, and you can use them not only to decorate your home, but also to create a brooch, a designer headband, a hair tie, and to decorate your own clothes. It's simple and fun.

Making a felt hydrangea

To make hydrangea we will need:

  • Felt;
  • Scissors;
  • Glue gun.

From felt of the color you have chosen, cut out 13 circles: 1 circle with a diameter of 3 cm, the rest - 2 cm. Carefully apply glue to the center of the circles and squeeze it simultaneously on both sides with your fingers.

This way we form three-sided petals. A large circle will act as a base, so using a pen you can initially mark four positions where the petals will be located, then apply glue to the marks and attach the 4 previously made petals.

We place four more between them, and so on until we use all the petals.

Almost any flowers can be made this way.

Children's toys made of felt

And, of course, children's toys made of felt cannot be ignored. They can be simple, such as flat pigs, dogs and elephants, the making of which required only a little felt, thread and a couple of patterns.

It is much more difficult to make three-dimensional toys. This requires a lot of experience and patience. For example, all kinds of owls are very popular today. We suggest you make one or two.

Felt owl

We will need:

  • multi-colored felt;
  • colored fabric;
  • scissors;
  • floss threads;
  • glue gun;
  • fabric marker;
  • beads for eyes;
  • filler.

We draw the outlines of the owl on thick paper. We cut out the pattern, apply it to the felt and cut it out too. For an owl you will need two layers: front and back, as well as paws. We cut them out of felt of a different color.

The fabric will act as clothing.

Before assembly, you need to decorate all the parts and apply makeup to the owl. Using a brush, carefully apply blush and glue on the eyes.

Using a hot gun, glue the fabric to the felt. If desired, you can decorate everything with braid or beads.

If you have time, you can sew on the eyes by hand, or use a glue gun.

We also sew the wings together and stuff them with stuffing. We connect the entire owl, sewing it along the edges with thread. It is necessary to leave a little space so that the filler can be easily placed inside. Then this seam is closed. And the owl is ready.

This toy will appeal not only to children, but also to any adult.

The variety of felt allows you to create unique masterpieces in a ridiculous amount of time. With a little effort, you will end up with a children's toy, decoration, interior element or holiday gift in your hands.

You can involve the whole family in this activity, and the children will be only too happy to help you, because it is so exciting to create something new from a set of different elements. A piece of fabric, felt, buttons, beads will soon turn into a cute bunny, or maybe an owl or a raccoon? It's up to you to decide.
