How to turn a simple T-shirt into a fashionable one. We sew and knit from old T-shirts and shirts

There is probably no girl or young man who doesn’t have several old or rather tired T-shirts in their wardrobe. Of course, you can give them to your mother so that she can use them as rags while cleaning. However, you may not want to do that once you find out what you can do with old T-shirts.

Fashionable scarf

Want to know what you can make out of old T-shirts without any sewing skills? “Folk” designers suggest trying to make an original scarf that will enliven any boring outfit. To make it you will need... sharp scissors.

Need to:

  • cut off the top of the T-shirt, starting from the line under the sleeves;
  • turn the resulting “ring” over with the processed edge facing up;
  • cut from the bottom into vertical strips of the same width (1.5-2 cm), trying to ensure that the fringe is the same length.

When the scarf is almost ready, you can decorate it. Multi-colored beads are suitable for this. They need to be put on strips of fringe and tied in tight knots at the ends.

Pencil skirt

Wondering what you can do with an old T-shirt? If it is made of a material that holds its shape well, and you know how to sew, you can try turning it into a fashionable skirt with a tight-fitting silhouette.

First of all, you will need a pattern. If you can't find one, then take some kind of pencil skirt that fits well on your figure. Using a chalk, transfer the silhouette of the pattern onto the T-shirt. Cut the front and back pieces with minimal seam allowances. Connect them with pins. Sew using a zigzag machine. In this case, it is better to set a small step for a large stitch.

Using the remaining strips of fabric with a side seam, sew a waistband. If the T-shirt was quite long, then you will end up with a belt with one seam connecting it into a ring. Otherwise, you need to take two side strips, cut out a pair of identical pieces that are ½ waist circumference long, and sew them together. Next, you need to connect the belt with the skirt using the same zigzag. Since the hem of the skirt is the bottom edge of the T-shirt, it does not need any processing. If the belt does not fit tightly, you can thread an elastic band of a suitable color and width into it.

Pillows

Has it ever occurred to you that you can use old T-shirts to make bright pillowcases with original prints for pillows for a sofa or ottoman? Does this idea interest you? Then what are you waiting for? Making such textile decorations for your home does not require much effort. The main thing is that the pillows are smaller in size than the T-shirts themselves. To make your pillowcases easier to wash in the future, you can match the zippers to the color of the fabric. The operating procedure is as follows:

  • measure the pillow in length and width;
  • cut out 2 rectangles or squares from a T-shirt with an allowance of 3 cm + 1 cm for seams;
  • connect the parts on three sides with double seams;
  • sew on the zipper.

What can you make from an old small T-shirt?

Do you know that in the wake of the fight for the environment, the fashion industry relatively recently remembered the so-called string bags? If you are not ready to show off your purchases, then a small T-shirt in bright colors and with an original print can make an original bag. It will help you out in the supermarket and will completely replace plastic bags, with which environmentalists have been fighting an irreconcilable battle for a long time. This practical accessory is also convenient because it can always be folded and hidden in a bag or jacket pocket.

The manufacturing process is quite simple and depends on the chosen model. For example, you can:

  • cut off the top and turn the T-shirt inside out;
  • sew it along the cut;
  • use scraps to make handles;
  • sew them to the top.

By the way, using the same technology, a string bag can be made from a knitted T-shirt. In this case, it will be enough to simply turn the product inside out and stitch it along the bottom edge. And you don't even have to make handles!

What can you make from an old white T-shirt?

Such an ordinary wardrobe item can be turned into a very original summer blouse. To do this you need:

  • cut off the bottom edge of the T-shirt so that it reaches the waist;
  • make a deep neckline on the back;
  • cut long strips from excess parts of the T-shirt and sew straps from them;
  • process the bottom edge of the product;
  • sew one strap horizontally at the back, 2 cm down from the shoulder seams;
  • measure and cut 4 straps of different lengths, each should be 8-10 cm smaller than the previous one;
  • sew them in a semicircle to the “crossbar”, with an indentation of 2 cm on each side.

Blouses with lace

You will probably be surprised when you find out that you can make very beautiful feminine tunics from old T-shirts, having only a few meters of wide lace on hand.

We offer two options:

1. Vertical stripes are cut off on both sides of the T-shirt along the entire length, departing from the side seams at a distance equal to the width of the lace. The result should be something like a poncho. Sew a piece of wide lace braid along the edge of the entire cut on the right side. The same is done on the left. Leaving room for the sleeves, connect the parts with side seams from the wrong side or outside, retreating 3-4 cm from the edge. In the latter case, you can create ruffles on the sides if you slightly stretch the thread and gather the lace.

2. Rip out the shoulder seam of the T-shirt and cut the sleeve along the upper fold. Align the top of the front half in a straight line. Sew one strip of lace to the edge of the sleeves. As a result, they should become wider. Sew lace along the upper edge of the blouse to create a “boat”. If there is a desire, and the T-shirt is long, make a drawstring in the waist area and thread the braid there.

A few more ideas

From strips cut from T-shirts of different colors, you can weave braids that will become the basis for bracelets. From these, using brooches and beads, you can also assemble a neck decoration. Braided T-shirts are also suitable for making a bright belt. You can also make an original headband from it.

Now you know what you can do from old T-shirts (see photo above), and you can turn them into stylish wardrobe items or a fashion accessory. Good luck!

4. Use pins to secure half of the lace inserts, leaving the areas where the sleeves will be untouched.

5. Using a machine, sew where you have marked with pins.

Here is another version of a T-shirt made in the same way:

2. Sleeveless vest made from T-shirts with your own hands
