Do-it-yourself blanket for discharge: all the quick and correct options for creating it. DIY blanket for discharge: how to sew a comfortable envelope for newborns (85 photos)

I propose to sew a baby blanket for a newborn and two small pillows for it. For this product I take the main fabric - polycotton. For thickness, I use and recommend holofiber, but you can also use padding polyester. My blanket will not be very thick and warm - one layer of holofiber. In general, the thickness can be made according to your taste and desire. This can be done by a seamstress who already has some experience, a little patience and 2 - 2.5 hours of time. In the description of sewing, I will use my photographs of the sewing process. I already have a sewing article on my website with a simpler stitch and a detailed description of the sewing technology. I advise you to familiarize yourself with it. Those interested can watch my video tutorial on sewing a blanket:

Consumables:

Polycotton - for a blanket and 2 pillows - 3 m (for a blanket without pillows - 2 m) with a fabric width of 1.5 m.

Hollow fiber or padding polyester, 1 cm thick (100) - 1 m x 1.5 m.

Lace – 10-12 m, 2-3 cm wide.

Sewing threads No. 40-60, sewing machine needle No. 90-100, tailor's pins.

I recommend making an unusual blanket stitch in the form of quilted flowers and leaves. This blanket will be for a newborn girl, so I selected the color of the fabric and the shape of the stitching patterns accordingly.

I recommend making patterns for stitching the same way as on plastic film. The drawing must be drawn with a thin marker. The dimensions of the patterns should not be too small; we must not forget that we will need to stitch along their contour. I came up with patterns: a flower 35-40 cm in diameter with several large petals, and a leaf 30 cm long and approx. wide. 15 cm. I made the patterns for myself on cardboard, because I often get asked to sew a blanket for a child, but you can also leave the plastic ones.

CUTTING AND HINTING

The size of the baby blanket that I will sew with my own hands will be 1m x 1.5m. This size fits well into a crib.

Cut 2m from a total piece of fabric. Cut it in half and you get 2 pieces of 1m x 1.5m. Place one piece on a large table. Apply the patterns and trace with chalk on the front side of the future blanket. The drawing can be done to your taste. Mine turned out to be asymmetrical. I recommend not making the distance between the parts too large and not too small, approximately 20 or 25 cm. You can use a circle that was cut out from the middle of the flower.

SEWING

Sew lace along the entire perimeter of the chalked part of the blanket, along the edge. For beauty, I occasionally make small folds by eye.

Place the prepared holofiber on the table. On it, place both pieces of the main fabric with the right side inward, where there is already a chalk mark for the design. Pin the blanket together with needles, most of the needles along the edges.

Using a sewing machine, we sew a line along the lace stitching line. Leave an inversion hole on one edge, approximately 20-25cm.

Then remove the needles and turn out the resulting blanket.

Place it on a large table, chalked side up, and pin the entire blanket very well (pin through all layers). Here it is advisable to use as many pins as possible.

BLANKET STITCH

In order to quilt a blanket on a machine, you need to loosen the presser foot so that the blanket passes through more easily. The stitch size can be set to the coarsest pitch. I use contrasting green thread. We lay a machine stitch along the chalk lines. When stitching, it is very important that all layers of the blanket move evenly, without distortion. To do this, you need to help move it with your hands. I would like to note that a machine needle will never break if you sew along a perpendicularly inserted pin.

Sew up the inside hole and remove all the pins. A hand-sewn baby blanket for a newborn is ready. Be bolder, more confident and you will succeed!

CUSHIONS

From the remaining fabric, sew pillows measuring 50x50cm. To do this, you need to cut out four pieces of the required size. You can put crushed pieces of holofiber or padding polyester inside the pillows. You can see more in my article.

While you're expecting a baby, you can try your hand at handicrafts and prepare some of the dowry yourself. How to make an envelope for a newborn with your own hands? It's actually not that difficult! After carefully studying the tips in the article, you can get to work with confidence. Everything will definitely work out!

What should a baby envelope be like?

When starting work, you need to think about what kind of envelope the baby needs. If discharge from the maternity hospital and the first months of life occur in the summer months, then you can make a light summer envelope-bag, knitted from thin yarn or sewn from fleece without lining. In the case when it is already noticeably cold outside, you will need a warmer and more substantial item, insulated with synthetic padding or knitted from thick yarn with an additional lining.

You also need to remember that an envelope for a newborn is outerwear, so it should not be narrow or tight. This should be taken into account when making a pattern for a future product.

Much attention should be paid to materials. For your baby, it is best to choose high-quality soft yarn with a minimal acrylic content. If the product is made of fabric, then the outer fabric can be any, but the inner lining should be made of natural cotton or soft and delicate fleece, pleasant to the baby’s skin.

Do not overuse the decor. This is exactly the case when less is better. An abundance of beads, rhinestones, sparkles and other things may look beautiful, but are not very practical in terms of use. As decorations, you can use smooth appliqués, embroidery, ribbons or laces to tighten the hood.

What not to do

If the birth of the baby occurs in winter, then it is better to purchase a factory-made winter envelope. Of course, you can try to sew it yourself, but it is unlikely that you will be able to find good quality synthetic fillers, and working with natural fur is a rather labor-intensive process.

But for the winter, you can knit several sleeping bags for your baby, which will be actively used as additional insulation during walks or if it’s cold at home.

This model is perfect for discharge and for walking with a child.

How to sew an envelope for a newborn with your own hands

If sewing a winter envelope is a labor-intensive task, then the demi-season option is quite within the power of any needlewoman.

Using this pattern you will get an envelope of standard size 68-74

By spending time in the evenings, you can make this wonderful children's envelope.

The pattern is in the photo on the right.

To sew a demi-season envelope for a newborn with your own hands, you will need:

  • The fabric for the outer layer is 0.5 m. It is better to use something like a “raincoat”, since the wind will not blow through it and it will not get wet if raindrops accidentally get into the stroller.
  • Fabric for the inner layer – 0.5 m. Fleece or velosoft are ideal. These materials are soft and pleasant to the touch.
  • Insulation (sintepon) – 0.5 m.
  • Zipper 50-60 cm long – 2 pcs.
  • Velcro tape – 10 cm.
  • Lace – 50 cm.
  • Plastic lanyard fastener – 1 pc.

Progress

The pattern is laid out on the main fabric, padding polyester and lining. You should end up with three identical parts.

To simplify the work, you need to sew the padding polyester and the main fabric together, so that later it will be easier to sew a zipper between the base and the lining.

The resulting parts need to be put together, as in the photo. Sintepon in the middle

Sew the padding polyester and the main fabric together

First, it is better to baste the zipper, at the same time bending the edge, and only then sew it on a typewriter

In the end it should look like this

After the zippers are sewn in, you can try unzipping and fastening them. If everything is done correctly, it will turn out like this:

Next we sew the hood. It is sewn from the top edge of the product. To do this, you need to bend the edges in the shape of a triangle and stitch. The top corner can be cut and stitched by folding the edges inward. This is done to make the hood look neater.

This is what the hood looks like on both sides

This is what the almost finished envelope looks like

Now, to improve the product a little, you can sew Velcro on the sides.

One part of the Velcro is sewn in the upper corner, and the second is exactly under the first, but 10-15 cm lower

Now you can bend the edge of the envelope, and it will not get in the way. And if the baby has fallen asleep or there is a strong wind outside, the edge can be bent

A drawstring with a lock can be inserted into the hood. This is done so that it is more securely fixed on the baby’s head.

Using the lock, you can tighten and loosen the cord to change the size of the hood

As a result of your efforts, you will get such a beautiful and fashionable autumn-spring envelope, no worse than the one you bought:

At a modest cost and a minimum of effort, you can sew such a great thing for your baby

Knitted baby envelope

To work you will need:

  • Yarn (50% wool, 50% acrylic) for main knitting – 350 g.
  • Yarn for lining (50% wool, 50% acrylic) – 100 g.
  • Needles No. 3 for main knitting.
  • Knitting needles No. 2.5 for knitting lining.
  • Knitting needles on a fishing line for knitting stripes.
  • Hook No. 2.5.
  • Sewing needle.
  • Buttons – 10 pcs.

If mommy knows how to knit, then you can work hard and make such a fashionable and beautiful envelope for your baby, which is suitable for warm autumn-spring or cool summer

Dimensions and notes

A pattern is not needed to make this model. Everything is extremely simple. To create a product of standard size 68-74, you need to knit a fabric measuring 40 cm X 125 cm. Of this, 25 cm will be for the hood, and the remaining 100 cm will be folded in half, forming an envelope.

It should be borne in mind that if a different pattern is used, then the dimensions and yarn consumption may vary slightly.

Knitting pattern:

The edge loops are not indicated on the diagram

To make it more convenient to knit the strap for the fastener, the edge of the main fabric should be decorated with a “pigtail”.

Progress

First you need to knit the bar (4-5 cm). Then the main part of the fabric is knitted with the selected pattern - 120 cm.

Next you need to sew the hood. To do this, it is better not to close the loops at the end of knitting the main fabric, and then sew the hood with a needle using the “loop to loop” method. You definitely need to make sure that the pattern at the seam junction looks beautiful.

It should look like this

Now you need to knit the strap for the fastener. To do this you need knitting needles connected with fishing line. It is better to choose a fishing line as long as possible. The most difficult thing is calculating the number of loops so that the edge is smooth - not pulled together or wavy. To knit this pattern, you need to cast on 31 loops per 10 cm of edge length. The loops must be distributed as evenly as possible.

Having knitted the bar to the middle (2 cm), you need to mark the loops for the fastener.

We tie the bar to the end (4 cm wide). We knit the loops with auxiliary colored threads.

Threads need to be prepared for each loop. A loop knitted with an auxiliary thread looks like this

Now you need to pull out the colored thread and cast on the loops on the knitting needles.

It should look like this

The ends of the threads that remain free must be tied and hidden

If desired, you can make a tassel on the hood. To do this, crochet a cord 10 cm long. The brush has the following dimensions: 2.5 cm - the round part and 6 cm - the fluffy part. The knitted tassel is sewn to the hood.

Now you need to knit the lining. It can be sewn from fleece, flannel or cotton. This option considers a knitted lining. The lining is also knitted in one piece. We calculate the length based on the fact that the lining goes to the hood and mattress. The part of the envelope covering the legs remains without it. You can knit a longer lining and sew it along the entire inner surface of the product.
This is what the inside of the hood looks like

A beautiful knitted envelope is ready!

How to crochet a blanket for discharge

Instead of an envelope, you can try knitting a blanket. For discharge in the summer, it will be simply ideal - light, openwork, beautiful.

Such an accessory will look great in photographs, and it can be used in the future as a baby blanket or bedspread.

For a blanket measuring 80 x 102.5 cm you will need:

  • Hook No. 2.5.
  • Soft white cotton yarn – 250 g.
  • Similar colored yarn (orange, gray, lilac, yellow) - 100 g each.
  • Pink yarn – 50 g.

Progress

First you need to separately knit 130 white-colored squares:

  • Yellow/white – 27 pcs.
  • Lilac/white – 27 pcs.
  • Pink/white – 23 pcs.
  • Gray/white – 26 pcs.
  • Orange/white – 27 pcs.

The size of each square is 7.5 x 7.5 cm.

Detailed description of knitting squares

Then you should use white yarn to tie the entire blanket along the contour. The tying is also done using single crochet stitches. The width of the edging should be 2.5 cm.

Today it is not at all difficult to find ideas for inspiration. There are tons of them on the Internet. You should definitely try to sew or knit something similar for your baby. Handmade things are not just fashionable. They will bring a lot of fun during the making process.

With the appearance of the coveted two lines on the test, the young mother immediately begins to think about a dowry for her baby, as well as about everything that he will need in the first days of his life. In addition to a beautiful outfit, you will also need an envelope for discharge, even in the summer.

The stores have a very large selection of envelopes, but their prices are not the lowest, and often very high. Any product for a baby can be sewn by the mother herself, spending a minimum of money on it, and she can invest all her love for the newborn. But not all mothers know how to sew an envelope for discharge with their own hands, which is what this article will be about and two master classes will be shown.

Before you start buying fabric and sewing, you need to decide what kind of envelope you need. There are several types of them, and each mother chooses for herself which one is more convenient for her.

Types of envelopes

Blanket envelope

A blanket envelope is a rectangle made of several layers of fabric and insulation depending on the season: winter, summer or autumn - spring. It looks like a classic one, but turns into an envelope using a special technique for swaddling the baby and an elastic bow or an ordinary satin ribbon for fixation. Enough easy to make, even a novice seamstress can cope with this task. The choice of material for such a blanket is mainly 100% cotton, especially on the side that will be adjacent to the child’s body. Plush and are also used.

The blanket can be both insulated and not, depends on the weather at the time of discharge. The insulation should be chosen hypoallergenic. The thickness of the insulation also depends on the time of year: for winter they choose the thickest one, for spring and autumn they choose thinner ones. In the summer, you can get by with two layers of fabric without insulation; such a baby blanket will later serve as an excellent blanket for a newborn.

Envelope with zipper

An envelope with a zipper will be a little more complicated, but it will be no less attractive and convenient. It can be just like a blanket with and without insulation, but in most cases these are still products are used in winter and autumn-spring periods. That is why the outer material is raincoat fabric or even fur. With their help, the newborn is not afraid of wind, rain or snow. A The presence of a zipper allows you to easily remove the child from it or just unfasten it and it will be freer for him.

These envelopes vaguely resemble children's winter overalls, only in a simplified version. By adding ties or elastic to the hood, you can achieve a more closed option for your child's head.

Such products are decorated in completely different ways., it all depends on the imagination of the expectant mother. Depending on the gender of the child, you can add appropriate decorations: either a bow, ruffles or lace, ribbons, rivets, rhinestones, embroidery, thermal transfers and much more. Below are master classes on how to sew an envelope for a newborn with your own hands, as well as patterns for a blanket envelope and a pattern for an envelope for a newborn with a hood.

DIY envelope-blanket master class

  • fabric on the outside 100x100 cm;
  • fabric on the inside 100x100 cm;
  • insulation (optional) 100x100 cm;
  • threads, needles, scissors, sewing machine and any decorations you wish (lace, elastic, rhinestones, sequins, etc.)

Before starting work, all fabric needs to be wet-heat treated (except for insulation), since the fabric shrinks. Iron the edges of the insulation 2 cm with an iron through wet gauze, this will make it easier to connect it to the fabric.

There is no special pattern for this blanket, as the details are simple. We cut out squares of 100x100 cm from the fabric, rounding the edges using improvised means, for example, a mug or plate. We pin the insulation to the top fabric with pins or sew it off with thread. Place the outer and inner fabrics face to face and secure the edges with pins. If lace is added, it must be pinned between the fabrics with the raised edge inward.

We sew it on a machine, retreating 1.5–1.7 cm from the edge, not forgetting to leave 10–15 cm open in order to turn the envelope inside out. We cut the rounding points with scissors at a frequency of 0.5 cm, this will give a beautiful rounding of the corners without creases. Turn the blanket inside out and sew up the remaining hole by hand using blind stitches. From the front side, stitch the blanket along the edge at a distance of 2 cm.

At the end, you will receive a ready-made baby blanket for discharge with your own hands with dimensions of 95x95 cm. You can also sew an elastic band to the blanket for fixation or use a regular satin ribbon. Decorate one edge with a patch or rhinestones of your choice. Sewing such an envelope blanket is a pleasure due to the ease of production.

DIY zip envelope master class

To make this product you will need the following materials:

  • raincoat fabric 50 cm (width 150 cm);
  • fabric on the inside (plush, cotton, velsoft) 50 cm (width 150 cm);
  • insulation 50 cm (with a width of 150 cm);
  • zipper 2 pcs. 50 cm long;
  • adhesive tape or buttons 2 pcs.;
  • pattern;
  • threads, needles, scissors, sewing machine and any decorations you wish (buttons, lace, elastic, rhinestones, sequins, etc.)

From all layers we cut out the same parts according to the pattern: a rectangle measuring 50x120 cm, after 60 cm we remove 5 cm from the sides, so that the second half of the rectangle is 40 cm wide. Iron the edges of the insulation 2 cm with an iron through wet gauze, this will make it easier connect it to the fabric. The thickness of the insulation depends on the time of year; for the winter period it is worth choosing the thickest one.

Attach the raincoat fabric and insulation and sew it on a machine; this will make it easier to sew on the zippers. Place zippers between the outer and inner layers of the envelope, folding the edges of the fabric inward. Place the zippers so that their end is at the narrowing point of the fabric. Sew the remaining fabric along the sides, folding the edges of the fabric inward without going too far from the edge. Sew the top edge of the rectangle, fold it into an envelope and, if desired, you can sew buttons or a small zipper, or simply sew the edges of the fabric, first the top, then the bottom.

The winter zippered envelope is almost ready and only the decorative part remains. By bending the bottom edge of the envelope, you can secure it with Velcro or snaps, and also place any decorative element on it, for example, a butterfly bow for a boy or a flower for a girl. You can also embroider the child's name on the lapel or on any other part of the envelope, sew on any patch or rhinestones.

Transfer the thermal transfer, in this case it is better to do this before starting work, calculating the exact location on the fabric. Another useful detail is the drawstring on the hood; it will allow you to tightly cover the newborn’s head and face from the wind. Sewing such a product is much more difficult than the previous one, but no less exciting, especially when changing the pattern of the product.

By carefully following these simple steps of the master class when sewing envelopes, and applying a little imagination, in the end you will receive a comfortable, beautiful envelope for your statement with your own hands and spend a minimum of money. Patterns can be changed at your discretion, depending on the size of the baby or the manufacture of decorative parts.

Even during pregnancy, every mother begins to prepare all the necessary things for the baby. Some people can’t stop shopping, while others are ready to spend all their free time creating things with their own hands. The first thing your baby will wear in the photographs is the discharge envelope. The easiest way is, of course, to buy, but it would be better to create a blanket for discharge quickly and easily with your own hands.

This way you will get a unique and inimitable item that will meet any requirements. Even craftsmen engaged in sewing and selling cannot repeat the same thing completely identical; each of them turns out to be unique in its own way.

By looking through many photos of finished products from other needlewomen, you can find a suitable option for yourself. Only after deciding on the materials and type of blanket can you go shopping and prepare for the start of the process.

How to sew a fabric blanket for discharge from the maternity hospital with your own hands

You can make a blanket for discharge with your own hands in various versions depending on your tastes and preferences. For example, there are these:

The simplest square shaped blanket.

The easiest blanket to sew and practical to use. After discharge, it is usually used to cover the baby, or put him in a stroller and crib.

Depending on the choice of materials, it can be used both in summer and winter. Most attention should be paid to the materials used, which should only be natural.

The entire master class in sewing such a blanket consists only of choosing a size and sewing a few machine lines. Usually the material taken is 1 m in length and width, but of course others are used in practice, it’s just that this one is considered the most universal. It is best to complement such a blanket with a beautiful bow, which will hold the shape of the envelope when checking out and prevent it from opening.

And of course, for complete delight, you should decorate it as you wish, with any accessories, such as a bow made of satin ribbons or add lace during the sewing process. For more experienced craftswomen, you can even sew it with an animal mold or with any other manifestation of your imagination.

Transformable blanket.

A very practical blanket to use and easy to use. While the baby is small it is very convenient to use it as an envelope for walking or sleeping, as soon as it grows up it can already be laid out in the shape of a blanket. It does not require special skills, only minor sewing skills.

You won’t need a lot of materials either, just: fabric for the outside (for example, cotton), for the lining (fleece), elastic and two zippers (for a winter envelope you will also need insulation). This simple pattern below will help you make a transformable blanket.

In patchwork style.

Or in another way this method is called patchwork. He is very interesting with his process and creative approach. A good option to show your imagination and create a truly unique thing. On the one hand, a simple plain fabric is usually used, on the other hand, patchwork stitching is used, a good option for use in the summer. In cool weather, insulation is added between the layers.

Another option using knitting skills.

If you are not a fan of sitting at the machine and cannot make even 4 even seams. But the yarn in your hands turns into works of art, then a knitted blanket will also be an excellent option. No matter what you are good at, knitting or crocheting, you can create a very beautiful blanket for discharge quickly and easily with your own hands with any tool in your hands. But not only these tools can be used; as an option, you can also make a blanket from pompoms.

Their sizes are usually universal, and are 1x1m; no one, of course, forbids knitting more or less, they just give the size that is often used by all needlewomen.

The choice of yarn depends on the temperature conditions of its use, for example, cotton is used in the summer, and acrylic in cool weather. You should not use itchy yarn, which will cause discomfort to your baby, even if you want the end result to be a very warm blanket.

Crochet:

From pompoms.

Usually a satin ribbon is inserted into the finished product along the edges for a more festive look, and a beautiful bow is tied on top. Sometimes craftswomen combine the use of two tools in their blanket; for example, the blanket itself is knitted with knitting needles, and the edging is crocheted.

With such a wide variety of options, each needlewoman will choose her own way to create a blanket for discharge with her own hands. And on the day of discharge from the hospital, each child will be photographed in his own unique envelope, created by his mother with all the love and care for him.

Video on the topic of the article

Video materials will help you see how to make any blanket with your own hands using a clear example.

The birth of a baby is always accompanied by joyful indignation and a lot of worries. That is why it is so important to prepare in advance for discharge and make an original and practical blanket for swaddling a newborn. There are many options for decorating this accessory, but the basis of the product is one.

  • envelope blanket;
  • transformable blanket.

One of the most important stages of sewing a blanket for a baby is the choice of consumables. You can sew an envelope for a newborn from any fabric, the main thing is that it is pleasant to the touch, retains heat well, and contains hypoallergenic fibers. It is worth choosing fabric taking into account the time of year. For summer models, thick fabric (embroidered or embossed cambric, stitching for decoration) folded in several layers is sufficient; for winter models, you will need velor, satin, velsoft, fleece and multi-layer insulation (sintepon 8–10 cm).

We bring to your attention some of the simplest options.

Instructions for sewing a transformable winter blanket

  • cut out a square from fabrics of external and internal decoration;
  • cut a piece of padding polyester 120/120cm or 130/130cm;

  • to finish the inner corner of the blanket, cut out a triangle from cambric (with equal sides of 40 cm);
  • cut lace or ribbons to decorate one of the corners of the main fabric. Decorative elements should be several times longer than the measurements to form beautiful folds.
  1. Draw lines on the main fabric along which design elements, zippers and fasteners will be sewn.
  2. Add padding polyester to the interior fabric. Secure the edges of the canvas with a secure seam.
  3. Make a double-sided pocket from the outer fabric, gather the top of the element with an elastic band. Pocket: fold the fabric with the right side inward, sew around the perimeter, leaving a small area open. Turn the finished product inside out and manually finish the open edge with an invisible stitch.

  1. Sew a double-sided fold-over pocket to the front of the blanket to secure the baby in the envelope.

  1. Sew a detachable zipper onto the sides of the blanket.

  1. Sew a permanent or hidden zipper to the top seam of the blanket exactly in the middle. It should not reach 15 cm to the edges and form a hood.

  1. From the wrong side, fasten all parts of the blanket (flaps of internal and external finishing, insulation), leaving a few centimeters of the seam open. Turn the product inside out and sew up the open area with invisible stitches.

  1. Carefully iron the seams and cut off excess threads.
