The same problem with changeable parameters. Autofocus requires only slight movement of some lenses, but to achieve “zoom” you need not just complex multi-lens designs, but significant movement of parts. And again there is not enough space for this.

Absolutely all the shortcomings of mobile cameras that we have today - the inability to work in the dark, the inability to change the depth of field (“bokeh”: some objects look clear, others are blurred), the inability to make an optical (that is, without loss of quality) “zoom” - directly follow from here. And no amount of digital tricks can fully compensate for them. It’s good, of course, when you have an ultra-high-resolution photosensor - you can cut out pieces from the photo, simulating “zoom,” but little light is still collected.

So what is it, a dead end? But then an idea was born: if you can’t make one large camera, why not make several small ones that work in parallel?

The idea is tricky and requires a lot of digital post-processing to implement - but fortunately, we live in the digital age! Therefore, let's put not one, but two co-directional cameras on the smartphone. And we can have not the same ones, but with different focal lengths: the one with a shorter focus will give us wide-angle vision, and the other will become a “telephoto”, with a narrow field of view, but high magnification. Now we take pictures simultaneously and combine two pictures into one. How is this better?

Firstly, we will collect twice as much light in this way. Secondly, we will be able to accurately estimate the distance to objects in the frame (we essentially have a stereo pair, especially if we move the cameras further apart). Thirdly, we will be able to get two versions of the frame with different depths of field without loss of quality, plus countless intermediate digital approximations, that is, we can make an almost real “zoom”. Finally, fourthly, we will get a wider dynamic range: simply, both the darkest and lightest details will be visible in the image.


As you can see, there are too many advantages not to try to implement the idea. And it was realized, of course. Already at the beginning of 2016, at least two “dual-chamber” products appeared on the market: LG G5 and Huawei P9. Their optical designs are different (in P9, for example, one camera is black and white), but the principle is common: in both cases, information from two cameras is combined in one frame to improve its quality. And the result, in general, is consistent with the theory: such devices actually behave better in low-light conditions and provide better detail.

Apple went even further. Thanks to a powerful coprocessor (as if using elements of AI), iPhone 7 Plus takes full advantage of the capabilities of a stereo pair: it estimates distance, recognizes objects, and can control depth of field with almost no loss of quality.
