Church holidays in May. Name days in May, Orthodox holidays in May

Most citizens of our country consider themselves Orthodox Christians. They adhere to all traditions and celebrate all holidays.

In May, believers celebrate the two most important holidays, this is the Ascension of the Lord - May 17, and the Trinity - May 27. In addition, two days are memorial days, these are May 9 and May 26.

Ascension is a famous Orthodox holiday. It is always celebrated on Thursday as it falls on the 40th day from Holy Sunday. This year the holiday falls on May 17th.

When this day is mentioned, some moments that are associated with this celebration are immediately remembered:
- funeral loaves;
- solemn worship in temples;
- "Heavenly ladders";
- commemoration of the dead;
- funeral pancakes, etc.

This day belongs to the twelfth holidays and is celebrated not only in Russia, but also in Europe. The holiday commemorates the ascension of the Son of God into heaven.

Ascension Day is celebrated for 10 days. Wednesday is a pre-holiday day, in all churches the rite of giving of the Bright Resurrection takes place. The service runs all night. In churches, priests glorify the Ascension of the Savior to heaven. On Friday, the ceremony of giving the Ascension is performed.

From the feast of Easter until the Ascension, the priests wore white robes. On this day, it is customary to commemorate the dead.

This holiday also belongs to the twelfth. It does not have a specific date, it is celebrated on the fiftieth day from Bright Sunday. This year the holiday falls on 05/27/18, Sunday. This holiday is special in its own way, because on this day it is customary to decorate homes with branches, flowers, grass.

The Orthodox holiday is celebrated for three days. All dwellings are decorated with greenery and herbs. In churches, the clergy wear green clothes, which is the personification of life-giving, the Ros-Registr website reports. The service in the temple begins on Saturday and lasts all night. A solemn liturgy sounds at the Trinity itself. The third day is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. During the service, water is blessed.

Believers keep grass and branches for a whole year, they are a talisman of their home. On the feast of the Trinity, Christians should not only visit the temple, but also visit their loved ones and relatives at the cemetery. On the eve of the holiday, it is customary to carry out general cleaning in their homes.

An obligatory dish on the holiday is a loaf, which brings prosperity and well-being to the house. After returning from the church and the cemetery, it is time for festivities. First, all relatives gather at the same table to congratulate each other on the holiday, as well as to taste the festive dishes of the hostess.

After the meal is over, people go out into the street, dance and sing ritual songs. On this day, healers collect herbs. Even in the days of the Trinity, it is customary to guess.

On a holiday, it is forbidden to work and do household chores:
- sewing, washing and haircut;
- to swear and quarrel;
- swim in natural waters.

Lenten day

Every believing Orthodox person is obliged to know the dates of the biggest holidays. But, in addition to the big ones, there are also small ones that are often forgotten, and so those holidays that have a rolling date. Therefore, it is not so easy to calculate some of them.

In this case, the church calendar of holidays will always come to the rescue. It is he who will tell you what day this or that holiday falls on, as well as tell you how to celebrate this holiday correctly, and what is better not to do at this time. Such a calendar for May this year was presented by the clergy.

Church holidays in May 2018 calendar: Ascension of the Lord

This month, the Orthodox expect three big holidays. This is the Ascension of the Lord, the Day of the Holy Trinity and the Day of the Holy Spirit.

Ascension of the Lord

This holiday is widely known to all Orthodox Christians in Russia. It is always celebrated on Thursday, so it comes on the fortieth day from Bright Sunday. In 2018, the holiday falls on May 17, 2018.

In different places this celebration has different names:

  • Saved;
  • Spasov day;
  • Ascension day;
  • Ascension.
  • In the church calendar, it is listed as - the Ascension of the Lord.

Very often, farewell to spring is associated with him.
When this day is mentioned, some moments associated with this celebration are immediately remembered:

  • memorial loaves;
  • solemn worship in temples;
  • "Heavenly ladders";
  • commemoration of the dead;
  • memorial pancakes, etc.

This day belongs to the twelfth holidays and is celebrated not only in Russia, but also in Europe. This holiday reminds us of how, about two thousand years ago, the Son of God ascended to heaven. The New Testament describes this point in detail. As you know, the resurrected Jesus appeared before the eyes of his disciples more than once. When the fortieth day arrived, he asked them to gather in the ancient city of Jerusalem. In the presence of his apostles, he again ascended into heaven. True, after that, two angels descended from heaven, who were dressed in all white. They told the students that their teacher would definitely return. In fact, the Gospels of Mark and Luke tell of Jesus telling his disciples about his Ascension beforehand.

Until the end of the fourth century, the Trinity and the Ascension were one celebration. Then these holidays were divided.

How the Ascension is celebrated

The holiday is celebrated for 10 days. Wednesday is called the day of forefeast. In all churches, the rite of giving of the Holy Resurrection is performed. The service goes on all night. The clergy read the stichera of the Color Triodion. In the morning paroemias from the Gospel of Mark are heard. The following days are called the after-feast. In churches, priests glorify the Ascension of the Savior to heaven. On Friday, the ceremony of giving the Ascension is performed. From Easter until Ascension, the clergy are dressed in white robes.

Among other actions on this day, it is customary to remember the dead. In Russia, there used to be a tradition - housewives made “heavenly ladders” from dough so that deceased relatives could more easily get to paradise. It was customary to bring them to the graves of ancestors. Sometimes they were taken directly to the field. It was believed that this contributed to a good harvest. Ladders helped the grain to rise faster to the sky.

Also in Russia there was a tradition to bake "Christ's Bastards" - these are pancakes made in a special way. Ancient traditions said that Jesus in the interval between Easter and Ascension bypasses all believers. These culinary products were baked to him “on the path”.

Ascension is not allowed to work. Usually believers go to visit or invite the closest people to their home.

Even on this day, there was a tradition to help the poor. It was believed that the Savior himself could walk under the guise of such people.

It was also forbidden to spit and litter, so as not to accidentally harm Jesus, who at that time, under the guise of a beggar, walks among living people.

Day of the Holy Trinity

Also applies to the Twelfth Feasts. It has a rolling date and is celebrated on the fiftieth day from Bright Sunday. In 2018, the holiday falls on 05/27/18, Sunday.

For this celebration, special features are inherent:

  • decorating dwellings with flowers, tree branches and field herbs;
  • special worship;
  • consecration of water;
  • baking special flour products, etc.

The name of the holiday comes from an event that happened more than two thousand years ago. It was then that the Holy Spirit appeared before the eyes of the Virgin Mary and the apostles, who proclaimed that Jesus is the Son of God. The Trinity is evidence that the Holy Spirit, God the Son, and God the Father are one.

It was established in honor of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and the Virgin Mary on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The holiday symbolizes the unity of the Holy Spirit, God the Father and God the Son.

As ancient manuscripts testify, on the fiftieth day after Bright Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended on the mother of Jesus and his disciples. This happened in Jerusalem in the Upper Room of Zion. At first, all those present heard an extraordinary noise, then a blessed fire appeared. After these events, the followers of Jesus began to be able to speak different languages. By the command of God, this was done so that the apostles could carry the Christian teaching to different peoples living on Earth.

How is Trinity celebrated in Russia

This holiday is celebrated for three days. Temples, dwellings of believers are decorated with green branches of trees, meadow grasses and flowers. Priests wear green clothes, which personifies life-giving.

Church services begin on Saturday and continue throughout the night. A solemn liturgy sounds at the Trinity itself. The third day is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. During the service, water is blessed.

Parishioners, consecrated branches, flowers and herbs are dried and used as a talisman throughout the year.

On the days of the Trinity, in addition to temples, Christians must visit the graves of their ancestors in order to treat the spirits.

Before the holiday, a general cleaning is done. Housewives decorate their homes with various greenery and prepare festive dishes. Among them, there must be a loaf, which should bring prosperity and prosperity to the house.

After the church and the cemetery, it's time for festivities. First, family, relatives and friends gather at a round table to congratulate each other on the Trinity and taste the festive dishes of the hostess. After the meal, people go out into the street, into nature, where they dance and sing ritual songs. In some places it is customary to kindle a fire at the same time.

On this day, healers collect herbs. It is believed that these days they have special healing properties.

Even in the days of the Trinity, it is customary to guess. Young girls perform all sorts of rituals and guess at their future life and groom. In doing so, they use the collected herbs and tree branches.
