To begin with, we decided to turn to one of the creators of the Atelier Cologne brand, Christophe Servasel, whose main passion is colognes with citrus notes, and with his help dispel or confirm several perfume myths.

There is an opinion that citrus aromas are invigorating. Is this really true? And if so, is there a scientific explanation for this - or does everything happen at the level of emotional perception?

Citrus notes really have a tonic effect. This property was actively used even before the advent of perfumes. The effect here is rather psychosomatic, that is, emotional arousal leads to an increase in physical tone. And in terms of the degree of impact on our feelings and emotions, there really is little that compares with citrus fruits!

Citrus compositions are considered quite “fleeting”. Is it possible to increase their durability, for example, by using certain components?

Of course, the longevity is influenced by the notes used in the composition. For example, patchouli and moss are excellent fixatives. But this influence should not be exaggerated. What is much more important here is how the scent will interact specifically with your skin type. At the same time, it’s easy to increase the durability of your favorite but “transitory” scent - just use it together with cream, milk or shower gel from the same line.

What “additions” to citrus notes seem most successful to you and, conversely, undesirable? For example, can woody accords weigh down a citrus composition too much, or can berry accords add excessive sweetness?

I believe that citrus notes can be combined with absolutely everything. It's just that not everyone knows how to do it. It is impossible to make citrus fruits heavier, but it is easy to “overshadow” them so that it will be impossible to recognize them.

Do you think it is appropriate to wear citrus scents all year round - both in the summer heat and in the harsh Russian frosts? Is there such a thing as seasonality for you?

Sylvie (Christophe’s wife and co-founder of the brand - HB) and I never betray citrus notes - regardless of the season, time of day and weather outside the window. All Atelier Cologne fragrances start with them, but the final product is completely different: we have cheerful compositions that literally scream about hot summer, such as Cedrat Enivrant and Orange Sanguine, with an emphasis on fruity and floral accords. And there are absolutely autumn ones - and even those that will warm you up on long winter evenings: for example, Bois Blonds and Ambre Nue with traditional warm notes - amber, suede, wood.

You travel a lot. Have you ever noticed which countries have a special love for citrus scents?

In Europe, colognes and citrus compositions are traditionally very popular. But in the USA and Russia we are faced with the fact that they are perceived as purely masculine or exclusively morning scents. But we are trying to prove by our example that this is a fundamentally wrong idea. Citrus perfumes can be long-lasting and deep, and most importantly - universal: for any season, time of day and gender!

A real antidepressant - an explosive cocktail of blood and bitter orange, decorated with notes of jasmine and geranium and flavored with tonka bean and amber. We must pay tribute to its creators - they found a way to combine the citrus notes of a classic cologne with the brightest and richest components, more traditional for eau de parfum, and as a result they received an incredibly light and at the same time persistent composition on the border of two perfume “genres”.

The fact that hardly anyone associates England with orange groves does not in any way limit the creative imagination of British perfumers. Thus, in the collection of the brand Boadicea the Victorious we discovered a fragrance with a non-trivial citrus sound. Perfumer John Stephen, whose creations Elizabeth II herself has a weakness for, took bergamot, lemon and bitter orange as a basis, added a couple of “close relatives” to them - pink grapefruit and lime, mixed with white musk and refreshed with vetiver. The latter component adds a herbaceous, slightly woody sound, which makes this fragrance attractive to both girls and men.

Another variation on a given theme in the English style - and again from a brand whose creations did not go unnoticed by royalty. This fragrance is based on a kind of three-voice, where floral, citrus and woody-musky parts sound harmoniously. Well, the list of “performers” includes jasmine and lily of the valley, lemon, mandarin and bergamot, sandalwood, musk and oak moss. Cologne (and this is the concentration in which the aroma is presented) will appeal to girls who prefer rich citrus compositions to light ones, and to men for whom the phrase “made in Britain” is not just empty words.





Leisurely cycling around the island of Formentera was not in vain for Francis Kurkdjian: the bright colors of the coast and the heady sea wind inspired the perfumer to create this composition. The name of the fragrance was pretentious and Latin (Aqua Vitae is translated from Virgil’s language as “Water of Life”), and the olfactory pyramid was given a characteristic Italian accent (despite the fact that Formentera itself is part of Spain). The central place in it is given to Calabrian lemon and Sicilian mandarin, and they are set off by warm vanilla and woody notes.

Arancia di Capri, Acqua di Parma

There is no surprise that the fragrance, dedicated to the Italian island of Capri, consists of almost 100% citrus components, namely orange, tangerine and lemon. Cardamom adds piquancy to this trio, caramel gives it softness, and musk gives sensuality.

Fleur d'Oranger, Evody




It’s easy to guess what this fragrance is from its name: the key component is orange blossom, the flower of the orange tree. However, this is not a one-man show, but a whole orchestra - the soloist’s part was harmoniously complemented by bergamot, jasmine, musk and white wood. Together they perform a melody that will become an excellent soundtrack for the last days of summer and will remind them of them during the cold season.

Caligna, L'Artisan Parfumeur

If you have long dreamed of visiting Provence, do not rush to book a ticket on the next flight - you can be transported to one of the most picturesque French regions with the help of the new L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrance, called Caligna (“to court”, “to flirt” in the Provençal dialect). The composition really flirts - or rather even seduces us with accords of Grasse sage, pine needles, figs, jasmine confiture and tangerine leaves. The latter, having dissolved in a floral-woody cloud, replaced the cheerful sound familiar to citrus fruits with a subtle and delicate one. As a result, the olfactory fantasy of perfumer Dora Bagriche-Arnault, who imagined a sultry summer day against the backdrop of Provençal landscapes, turned out to be light and relaxed - as befits a “southern” fragrance.

Caudalie founder Matilda Thoma knows firsthand what the vineyards smell like on a sunny summer day. She tried to tell us about this with the help of the Zeste de Vigne fragrance, which she created together with the already mentioned Francis Kurkdjian. Well, let’s write it down: at noon (and it is at this hour that we are invited to go on an imaginary walk, the route of which includes a greenhouse) one can feel the sharpness of lemon, the tenderness of orange, the bitterness of orange and the freshness of tangerine.

This is exactly the case when the name of a fragrance carries comprehensive information about its sound. The composition is really built on a resounding combination of mandarin and basil: chamomile, green tea and amber are intended only to emphasize it - but in no case “overwhelm” it. If your soul requires more variety, you can do your own perfume experiments and complement Mandarine Basilic with one of the other scents from the Aqua Allegoria collection - for example, Herba Fresca.

This composition is suitable for those who like it hot: instead of a bright citrus chord, there are subtle notes of tangerine, rose and jasmine, but they are replaced by Pierre Montale's favorite ingredient - burning oud. Such unexpected contrasting combinations justify themselves 100%: the “mood” of the fragrance changes hourly, from citrus it transforms into floral, and then completely becomes oriental - such healthy eclecticism will diversify even the most monotonous everyday life.

One of the first compositions of the brand, as the name implies, is dedicated to grapefruit: the “main character” is supplemented with jasmine, rosemary, mint and capsicum in the heart, and vetiver in the base. Despite the fact that perfume is good alone, it can – and should! - mix with other Jo Malone creations. The main thing is not to be afraid of experiments: for Grapefruit, the British woman, who always cares about the compatibility of her flavors, has provided a record number of variations. For example, to “sweeten” and soften the smell, complement it with fruity Pomegranate Noir and Nectarine Blossom & Honey. If you want something more extreme, an excellent “companion” for Grapefruit would be Earl Gray & Cucumber, which plays on the aroma of tea with bergamot, vanilla and honey.

Ben Gorham made this composition very warm - but by no means exhaustingly “hot”. The perfumer softened the notes of bergamot with musk, rose and ambrette, thus giving Palermo that mystery that you don’t expect from a citrus scent.

For many, this cologne evokes associations with a freshly ironed and starched shirt - and certainly a white one. This is exactly the effect that its author, François Demachy, sought: the Frenchman wanted to create a perfume classic that was ideal in its simplicity - as universal and timeless as a basic item of men's wardrobe. Like the fashionable “prototype”, Dior Homme Cologne will surely be worn by girls with pleasure: the invigorating notes of grapefruit, complemented by musk and bergamot, are truly impossible to resist.

A fragrance dedicated to sunny Portofino simply must be light and fresh - to match the breeze on the Italian Riviera. Perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux fully managed to convey the carefree atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast: Neroli Portofino invigorates and calms at the same time - it is not without reason that neroli essential oil is believed to perfectly relieve nervous tension. Well, this miracle ingredient is paired with notes of bergamot and mandarin, complemented by a persistent amber base - with such a scent, even in stuffy Moscow, it’s easy to feel like you’re on the seashore!

Green Mandarin will certainly appeal to those who, even at the height of summer, can’t wait for the New Year: a composition with notes of orange, jasmine, eucalyptus and, of course, mandarin will allow you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of your favorite holiday no worse than watching “The Irony of Fate.”

Frisson de Verveine, L'Occitane

Frisson de Verveine eau de toilette, included in the new “Exciting Verbena” line, can be called, without exaggeration, a perfume energy drink. The aroma of perennial, so beloved by the French brand, is combined with refreshing aquatic notes, and therefore the tonic effect that is inherent in all citrus compositions is brought here to the maximum possible limit. Well, it looks like we have found an alternative to morning exercises!
