The idea of the holiday arose several years ago among the inhabitants of the city of Murom (Vladimir region), where the relics of the holy spouses Peter and Fevronia, the patrons of Christian marriage, whose memory is celebrated on July 8, are buried.
Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom are revered by the people as patrons of the family hearth, guardians of marital love.

The All-Russian holiday Day of family, love and fidelity appeared thanks to the Murom prince Peter and his wife Fevronia, who lived in the XIII century. Peter and Fevronia became a model of strong family relationships during their lifetime.
According to legend, Prince Peter ascended the throne of Murom in 1203. A few years earlier, Peter had contracted leprosy, from which no one could cure him. In a dream, the prince learned that Fevronia, a peasant woman from the village of Laskova in the Ryazan region, could help him.
Fevronia, in addition to beauty and piety, was famous for her wisdom and ability to heal ailments, it was she who cured the prince, and in gratitude for this, Peter took her as his wife.
However, the boyars did not recognize the princess in Fevronia and demanded that the prince abandon her: “Either let go of the wife, who offends noble ladies with her origin, or leave Murom.” Then Peter and Fevronia left the city and lived the life of ordinary people - without honors and wealth, rejoicing in God's help.
And in Murom, meanwhile, turmoil flared up. The boyars gathered a council at which they decided to call Peter back - to reign in conscience and justice. The prince and princess returned, and Fevronia managed to earn the love of the townspeople.
In their advanced years, Peter and Fevronia took monastic tonsure in different monasteries with the names David and Euphrosyne.
They prayed to God to die on the same day, and bequeathed their bodies to be placed in one coffin. Their prayers were answered. They died on the same day and hour - June 25 (according to the new style - July 8), 1228.
Considering the burial in the same coffin incompatible with the monastic rank, their bodies were laid in different monasteries, but the next day Peter and Fevronia were together again.
The holy spouses were buried in the cathedral church of Murom in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, erected over their relics by vow by Ivan the Terrible in 1553. Now they rest in the Church of the Holy Trinity of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Murom.
Peter and Fevronia are considered patrons of Christian marriage. The day of July 8 is the date of their memory, which is why it was chosen for this holiday. The holiday has been celebrated since 2008.
