In early July, immediately after the holiday Ivan Kupala one more date is celebrated, connected with both popular Christian and new - secular traditions. It is celebrated in Orthodoxy Day of Peter and Fevronia, which since 2008 has become an official holiday, called Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.

When is the Day of Peter and Fevronia and the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity

Since the Day of Peter and Fevronia according to the Orthodox calendar is celebrated on June 25 and according to the so-called "new style" falls on July 8, respectively, both holidays are celebrated July 8.

Memorial Day of Saints Peter and Fevronia

In the Russian Orthodox Church Peter and Fevronia- Orthodox patrons of the family and marriage, canonized in 1547. Historians associate the story of Peter and Fevronia with real people: the Prince of Murom Davyd Yurievich and his wife the princess Euphrosyne. Davyd Yuryevich ruled in Murom from 1205 to 1228, later the couple, who had three children, took the tonsure under the names of Peter and Fevronia.

Shortly after their canonization, the famous "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom", which is their life, appeared. The story told in this story is not easy. A few years before his reign, Peter fought with a fiery serpent, killed him, but got dirty with snake blood and fell ill with leprosy, from which he could not be cured. In a dream, he had a revelation that salvation would come from a simple girl - a peasant woman Fevronia. She agreed to help, but demanded that the prince marry her. Peter promised, but the cunning Fevronia, fearing deceit, did not cure the prince a little, leaving one ulcer on his body. Therefore, when Peter did break his promise, because he did not want to marry a commoner, the disease returned to him. Then Fevronia reminded the prince of this word, healed him, and the young people finally got married.

When Peter inherited the reign after his brother, the boyars demanded that the new ruler not dishonor the city with his commoner wife. Peter was given an ultimatum: either give up his wife, or get out of Murom with her. Peter did not want to part with Fevronia, and together they sailed away from the city in a boat. After their departure, turmoil began in Murom, and the prince was persuaded to return, agreeing to recognize his wife as well. Later, the townspeople reconciled with Fevronia and even fell in love with her for her mind and meek disposition.

In their declining years, the prince and his faithful wife took monastic vows and ended up in different monasteries - Peter in the men's, and Feronia - in the women's. Separated spouses prayed to die on the same day, and bequeathed to bury them in the same coffin. The prayer was heard - Peter and Fevronia died on the same day and hour. But their testament was not executed, as indecent for monastics. Peter and Fevronia were each buried in their own monastery, but the next day they mysteriously ended up in the same coffin.

According to scientists, the "Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom" combines two folk poetic plots: the legend of the fiery serpent and the legend of the wise maiden.

Day of Peter and Fevronia in folk tradition

  • According to the folk calendar, the first mowing can be carried out on the Day of Peter and Fevronia.
  • In addition, this is the day of witches, werewolves, sorcerers and all the undead, such as brownies and mermaids, since this holiday is also the day of the full maturity of field and forest grasses.
  • In the Slavic tradition, it was believed that on this day the last mermaids leave the banks deep into the reservoirs, where they sleep until spring, so from now on you can swim without fear until Ilyin's day on August 2.
  • Forty more hot days are expected from Peter and Fevronia.
  • It was customary for Peter and Fevronia to pray for family happiness, especially since this holiday came immediately after Ivan Kupala when, during the Kupala games, boys and girls found their betrothed and future family unions were established.
  • In the old days, weddings were played from this day (now this time falls on when weddings are not held). According to popular beliefs, it is on the Day of Peter and Fevronia that the happiest marriages are concluded, and in general this day is good for love.

Day of Family, Love and Fidelity

Since 2008, July 8 has been celebrated in the Russian Federation Day of Family, Love and Fidelity. It so happened that the folk-Orthodox holiday became official and was even recognized by all confessions.

According to one version, this day was chosen as a family holiday, as opposed to those not welcomed by the Russian Orthodox Church. Valentine's Day and .

Back in May 2001, the mayor of Murom Valentin Kachevan ordered to coincide with the day of the city to the day of memory of Murom saints Peter and Fevronia. And in 2002, an Arkhangelsk journalist Andrey Kutsaev proposed to come up with a Russian analogue of Valentine's Day.

In April 2007, in his annual address to the Federal Assembly, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin announced the decision to declare 2008 the Year of the Family. On March 26, 2008, the Federation Council unanimously approved the establishment of a new state holiday on the Day of the Holy Princes Peter and Fevronia - the All-Russian Day of Conjugal Love and Family Happiness. Later, the holiday had a symbol - a camomile. Since then, on July 8, various festive events have been held to coincide with Family Day, and the best Russian families are awarded with a specially established medal "For Love and Loyalty".
