Decorate the tablecloth on the coffee table with ribbon embroidery. Napkin embroidered with ribbons

There are several ways to sew tablecloths, because the corners and side cuts of the fabric can be processed in different ways. In this material, we have described the traditional and basic method, having mastered which you can sew with your own hands not only festive or everyday tablecloths, but also kitchen napkins, towels and runners with neat corners and edges.

To sew a tablecloth with your own hands you will need:

  1. A cut of a suitable fabric needs to be sized (from what material it is better to sew a tablecloth, read the article "", in the same master class, the tablecloth was sewn from flax);
  2. Threads to match the fabric and decorative trim;
  3. Sewing machine;
  4. Sewing supplies: tailor's scissors, ruler, measuring tape, pins, thimble, needle threader, chalk or marker;
  5. Decor if desired (it can be: sewing, border, fringe, lace, braid, etc.);
  6. Iron.

Step 1. Calculate fabric consumption

  1. Measure the length and width of the countertop;
  2. Determine the desired length of the overhang of the fabric, that is, the distance from the edge of the tabletop to the edge of the future tablecloth.
  • The overhang of the fabric can be 20-40 cm or have a floor length. The longer the overhang, the more elegant the tablecloth will turn out, but also the more inconvenient to use, therefore, for the everyday option, an overhang length of 20-30 cm is suitable;
  • When determining the length of the overhang, consider the percentage of shrinkage of the fabric after washing - for cotton linen and burlap, you need to add 10 cm to the desired length of the overhang, for linen - 10-15 cm. You can go the other way - pre-wash and then iron the fabric well.
  1. Now we take paper and a pen and calculate the fabric consumption using the following simple formula:

  • Please note that in this formula, a hem allowance of 5 cm is indicated, and the hem itself will turn out to be only 4 cm wide.

Step 2: Cut out the fabric

Iron the fabric if necessary, then lay it out on your work surface, make marks with a ruler and pencil, and then cut off the excess; patterns are not needed for a simple rectangular or square tablecloth.

  • The best way to mark the cut line is to pull the thread out of the fabric. To do this, you need to make a small incision in the right place, pull and carefully pull out the thread, which will be your guide.

Step 3. We process the corners

Now we need to decorate the corners so that they look beautiful even from the inside out. For this:

  1. We put the fabric on the table “face down”, bend its edges 1 cm inside out, fix the bends with pins (if necessary, we bast) and iron along the entire perimeter of the fabric.

  1. Further, on both sides of the corner, we measure segments 2 times larger than the hem width you planned (in this master class, the hem width is planned to be 4 cm, so a distance of 8 cm is measured from the corner). Then both marks must be connected with a ruler and a pencil.

  1. Fold the fabric in the corner (wrong side out) lengthwise so that the marks match and fix the fold with pins. Then we sew the corner along the markup.

  1. We cut off the excess in the corner, leaving only 5 mm of the allowance from the seam. Also cut the edge of the remaining allowance at the fold as shown in the photo below. This must be done so that the corner of the tablecloth turns out evenly.

  1. We turn out the corner, correct and iron. Further, in the described way, we process the remaining 3 corners of the tablecloth. Here's what you should get.

Step 4: Sew the hem

And finally, we begin to process the sides: we iron the hem of the entire tablecloth, fix it with pins and sew (from the inside out) on a typewriter or by hand with a blind seam at a distance of 1 mm from the fold.

Step 5: Decorate the Tablecloth

If you wish, you can decorate the resulting product with lace, appliqués, fringes, flounces and ruffles, embroider monograms and patterns. Kitchen textiles made from natural materials, give comfort to the home interior. Complementing tablecloths with embroidery, you will become the owner of a unique product, designed to your liking. Every willing craftswoman can try herself in such needlework.

We do embroidery on the tablecloth

Surely in the house every housewife has a plain tablecloth, which you really want to add with an interesting pattern. Ribbon embroidery looks very beautiful on linen tablecloths. If you do not have the right material available, choose the fabric yourself and get to work.
For embroidery you will need:

  • natural material (linen, cotton, coarse calico);
  • lining material;
  • satin ribbons of light and green shades;
  • lace;
  • dry pastel;
  • decorative elements in the form of beads, beads or sequins;
  • sewing threads (white, green and brown);
  • needles;
  • scissors;
  • pencil;
  • sewing machine.

One of the most uncomplicated patterns that you can
is a twig with roses. You can draw a diagram on paper with your own hands, and then transfer it to the material. A schematic pattern is applied with a simple pencil. In the process of embroidery, the pencil outlines will disappear behind the ribbons.
To embroider a branch, a “back of the needle” seam is used with brown threads in several additions.
At the next stage, dry pastel is taken and rubbed onto paper. The resulting crumb is applied with a brush along the contours of the branch. This technique will add a three-dimensional look to the embroidery.
Roses are embroidered next. First, rays are made with a thread, emerging from a common point, which add up to a kind of asterisk. In total, outline five such rays. The length of this element can be arbitrary, depending on what size you decide to embroider a flower.
Having prepared the rays, you can start embroidering roses on the tablecloth. A needle with a ribbon of a suitable shade passes near the middle of the star, after which it is sequentially passed under each of the rays. Repeat these steps until you completely cover all the rays. As a result, you will get a rose. Embroider such roses in random places along the entire length of the branch.

In addition to roses, buds can be embroidered on the tablecloth. The needle with the ribbon passes through the base and sticks into the ribbon with a slight indent from the place where it enters the fabric.
Foliage is embroidered in the same way. Petals of an unopened rose on both sides are covered with foliage.
To give the branch a more natural look, embroider the needles with green threads, and tint the core of the rose with a yellow pastel. As an additional decor, sew sequins or beads among the foliage.
At the final stage of tablecloth embroidery, the ribbons are fixed on the wrong side. After that, the material is ironed and a lining is sewn on in order to hide the wrong side of the embroidery. Sew delicate lace along the edge of the tablecloth, and sew satin ribbon bows in the corners.

Such an embroidered tablecloth will delight you with its grace for more than one year. In addition, as an addition to it, try to embroider the same pattern on napkins and you will get an original set of home kitchen textiles.

One of these important accessories is kitchen textiles made from natural materials - namely, tablecloths made of cotton or linen. They look much more spectacular than usual on the kitchen table.

In addition, tablecloths made from environmentally friendly materials of natural origin are characterized by hypoallergenic properties. All this makes tablecloths made of natural textiles very worthy elements in creating a harmonious and stylish kitchen.

But at the same time, most tablecloths are distinguished by very unsightly colors - they are often plain, white or soft pastel shades. In this case, the products can be decorated or decorated with ribbons.

Quite simple and not particularly difficult even for beginner needlewomen. The main thing in this case is patience, attention, accuracy in work and, of course, the availability of all the materials and tools necessary for work.

  • Multi-colored threads for sewing on ribbons.
  • Needles for sewing.
  • Sharp scissors.
  • Simple graphite pencil.
  • Sewing machine.

Sequence of work

  1. First you will need to choose the image you like with which you plan to decorate the tablecloth with ribbons. First, it is drawn by hand or transferred to paper using carbon paper, and then applied with a simple pencil according to the template on the tablecloth in those places where ribbon embroidery will be done. At the same time, you don’t have to worry that these schematic sketches will be visible later, because after the work is completed, all the contour lines drawn with a graphite pencil will be hidden by the ribbons sewn onto them.
  2. After that, you can proceed to the sequential execution of all elements of the picture. each element has some features, therefore, before embroidering buds or roses from ribbons on a large tablecloth, you must first practice on a small piece of fabric on each such element in order to have a skill.
  3. If you plan to decorate the tablecloth with images of a floral theme, then between the leaves or flower buds from the ribbons you can embroider sprigs with a “stem” seam (needle back), but you will need to use threads in several additions to make the embroidery more embossed and expressive.
  4. As additional decorative elements of the product, you can use sequins, beads or small beads. They are harmoniously added to the composition of embroidery with ribbons.
  5. At the final stage of work, lining fabric will need to be sewn to the back of the tablecloth to hide all the ugly seams on the wrong side of the work.
  6. And at the very end of the process, the edges of the tablecloth can be decorated with a wide satin ribbon or fringe. Thus, the result is a very beautiful and original product, which is sure to become a real decoration of your kitchen or dining room. With proper care, the product can last for many years.

How to embroider a napkin with ribbons with your own hands.

We decided to embroider a branch with small roses. We draw a diagram first on a sheet of paper, then transfer it to the fabric. You can draw directly on the fabric with a simple pencil: it will not be visible under the pattern.

With brown threads in two additions, we embroider a twig exactly according to the pattern drawn with a pencil. Instead of sewing threads, you can take floss or woolen threads.

We crumble dry pastel into dust on a sheet of paper, pick it up on a brush and draw, repeating a branch embroidered with threads. Pastel colors are better to take green and yellow: this will add volume to the embroidery.

The main element of the motif is roses. With a needle and thread we embroider an asterisk with rays coming out of one middle, pulling them tightly. There should be five beams. Their length determines what size the rose will be.

We thread a needle with a ribbon near the center of the asterisk and let the needle under the rays alternately. First, under the first ray, then over the second, then under the third, then over the fourth, under the fifth, over the first.

Thus, we process the rays of all the stars in a circle until the tape completely covers all the rays. As a result, we get a branch with roses.

To revive our branch, we will make unblown buds. To do this, we pass the needle with the tape through the fabric and pierce the tape, slightly stepping back from the place where the tape enters the fabric.

In the same way, using a green ribbon, we embroider the leaves. Petals of an unblown rose on both sides, as it were, are covered with leaves.

To make the branch look even more natural, we embroider “needles” with a green thread, and tint the middle of the rose with yellow pastel. Sequins or beads can be sewn between the leaves.

Now we need to fasten the tapes on the back side. To do this, simply fix the tips with a thread with a needle. We iron the fabric. Then we tack and sew the lining.
