History of the Dior brand. Christian Dior: the history of the brand from the beginning to the present day

When the couturier was still in adolescence, the gypsy woman predicted the future for him. She said that at one point he would be left without money, but women would bring him success and help him become a rich man. Christian was then only 14 years old and he just laughed when he heard this story.

The teenager was suspicious of all sorts of predictions and had no idea what it was like to be left without funds, because his father was a famous businessman. Parents sent Christian to a diplomatic career, but did not pay attention to his desire to become an artist. And so, the teenager was sent to the School of Political Science in Paris.

But political career he did not work out, and the desire to devote himself to art was stronger. Christian and his friend decided to sell antiques and open an art gallery. Dior got into the Parisian bohemia and did not think that this could come to an end. But in one moment everything changed. In 1931, Christian was left without a mother. The father was deceived by a partner and he went bankrupt. The art gallery was closed, and Dior could only survive with the help of friends.

The catastrophic lack of money made Dior remember about his children's hobby namely drawing. For the Le Figaro newspaper, he drew a series of sketches for hats and dresses. Christian received the first fee and realized that this was a hobby and would bring him money. So he began cooperation with several magazines, was engaged in the creation of clothes for different couturiers.

The history of the brand began after the end of the war. A textile tycoon proposed to Dior that he be artistic director of his fashion house, to get him back on his feet after World War II. Christian agreed, but he always knew the value of his talent, so he made a condition that the fashion house should be called "The House of Christian Dior". The condition was accepted, and Dior set to work.

In 1947 in Paris, where in the winter after the war there were constant problems with coal, gasoline, electricity and clean water, Christian Dior showed his first collection, which he named " new look". The girls on the catwalk appeared as the most beautiful exotic flowers, came out in the most chic dresses. The spectators watched this holiday in post-war Paris with fascination and admiration. Christian Dior made them understand again that women are gentle and beautiful.

The first show was an incredible success. The couturier said that he wanted to show the similarity of women with flowers. In that post-war period, this turned out to be just what was so lacking. female half. So Dior began to be perceived as an idol who returned femininity and tenderness. So the gypsy's prediction came true - it was women who brought success. Dior remembered these words, realized that the prophecies were coming true. Now the fashion designer has become so superstitious that he has his own personal fortune teller - Madame Delahaye. Without her prompting, Dior did not make a single decision.

In a few years, the Christian Dior Fashion House has become a huge network of enterprises, with 2000 people working there. Dior did not recognize any work other than handmade. Absolutely all clothing had to be accompanied by painstaking work. The fashion designer did not want the Fashion House to become an enterprise that produces an unlimited number of works of art, because otherwise they would not be able to be called that way. Couturier treated dresses like living beings.

Over time, Christian Dior became famous for his extravagance and decided to open a perfume company. After all, perfume is a continuation of the outfit and completely completes the image, Dior was sure of this. This is how the first perfumes under the brand name Dior appeared - Diorissimo, Diorama, J "adore, Miss Dior. They are still incredibly popular and are considered classics.

In 1956, Diorissimo perfume was released, in which the main focus is the mascot of the House of Dior - lily of the valley. These were the first perfumes to feature this scent.

Dior did not stop there and decided to open another branch of the House of Dior, which would produce cosmetics. After all, the couturier understood that cosmetics would find their application in a woman's toilet.

In 1955, Dior released lipstick, in 1961 - nail polish, and in 1969 the production of cosmetics in series began. The brand has always tried to find the right combination colors for the entire series. Dior never repeated itself when creating new colors, each time new colors were chosen, but they all harmoniously combined with each other.

The fashion designer worked from morning to night, and this could not but affect his health. For the first time, he did not listen to his fortune teller and went to Italy for treatment. On October 24, 1957, Christian Dior died of a heart attack in Italy.

After his death, Yves Saint Laurent became the main fashion designer of the house. By that time, he was still a young fashion designer who had worked for the company for four years. In 1960, he was called up for military service, and was replaced by Mark Boan, who was replaced in 1989 by Gianfranco Ferre. And in 1996, John Galliano became the chief fashion designer at the House of Christian Dior.

Currently, the Dior brand is distributed in 43 countries, and stores of this brand can be found even in Japan, Australia, Brazil, China and other countries of the world.

Whatever the era, the great House of Dior proudly carries out its mission, making women not only beautiful, but also happy, creating new images, more and more dazzling and luxurious.

Every time we say the name Christian Dior, we mean the style, sophistication and luxury of everything that this legendary brand with more than half a century of history produces - clothes, perfumes, cosmetics.

Even as a child, a gypsy woman predicted his fate to the future great couturier. She said that in the future he would be left without a livelihood, but women would bring him good luck, it was thanks to them that he would succeed and become wealthy man. Then 14-year-old Christian just laughed at these words.

The skeptical teenager did not particularly believe in predictions, besides, his father was a wealthy entrepreneur, and Christian could not imagine what it would be like to be completely without money. The boy's parents hoped that he would pursue a diplomatic career, ignoring his desire to become an artist. Christian had to go to the Paris School of Political Science.

But the political sciences failed to discourage him from the desire to engage in art. Dior and a friend open an art gallery and sell antiques. Christian rotated in the Parisian bohemia, and it seemed that his carefree existence would never end. But everything changed overnight. In 1931, Christian lost his mother. The father was deceived by a partner and went bankrupt as a result. Picture gallery also closed, Christian survived only through the help of true friends.

Lack of money forced Christian Dior to return to his childhood hobby - drawing. He sketched several sketches of dresses and hats that the Le Figaro newspaper bought. After receiving the first fee, it occurred to Dior that his childhood passion could really bring in money. He begins to collaborate with various magazines, creating clothing models for famous couturiers.

But true success awaited him after the end of the war. The textile tycoon offered Dior a position as artistic director of his couture house to raise him from the ruins he had fallen into during World War II. Christian agreed, but put forward a bold condition, which, however, was accepted - the fashion house received the name "House of Christian Dior". Dior from the very beginning knew the value of himself and his talent.

In the cold post-war winter of 1947, in Paris, where there was not enough elementary coal and gasoline, there were persistent problems with clean water and electricity, Christian Dior's "New Look" collection premiered. Wonderful exotic flowers bloomed on the podium, fashion models came out one after another in chic dresses. The spectators sat motionless, admiring this celebration of life in post-war gray Paris. Christian Dior again reminded them that they are beautiful, gentle, feminine.

The success of the show was incredible. Dior said that he painted women who looked like flowers. That was exactly what was missing beautiful half humanity at that time. Dior became an idol who returned beauty and femininity. So the prophecy of the gypsy came true - women contributed to the success of Christian Dior. The fashion designer remembered her words, and became very superstitious, realizing that the prophecies come true. Now he did not take a single step without the advice of his personal soothsayer, Madame Delahaye.

A few years later, the Christian Dior Fashion House grew into a network of enterprises employing more than 2,000 people. Dior recognized only manual work, so in his workshops, each item of clothing was created by the careful work of the Fashion House employees. Dior did not want to turn his enterprise into another production that stamped works of art in mass quantities, because such an approach deprived the latter of the actual opportunity to be called works of art. The great couturier treated dresses like living beings.

Having earned the fame of an extravagant couturier, Christian Dior opens a perfumery company. He was firmly convinced that the perfume is a continuation of the dress, an indispensable attribute of the finished toilet. The very first perfumes from Dior - Miss Dior, Diorama, Diorissimo, J "adore - have become enduring classics and are still popular to this day.

AT perfume composition perfume Diorissimo, released in 1956, the main note belongs to the lily of the valley, the talisman of the House of Dior. These perfumes were the first to contain notes of this flower.

The next step was the opening of a branch of the House of Dior, engaged in the production of cosmetics, which was also intended to become part of the complete image of a stylish woman.

Since 1955, Dior has been producing lipstick, since 1961 it has been producing nail polish, and since 1969, Christian Dior has been producing cosmetics in series. The Dior brand has always set itself the goal of finding harmonious combination colors for all products included in one series. And here Dior could not retreat from its artistic taste. When creating new colors, Dior never repeats itself. A new color scheme is chosen each time, but within it, all colors blend perfectly and support each other.

The couturier worked tirelessly, and this affected his health. When he was going to undergo a course of treatment in Italy, he consulted with a personal soothsayer, but even after receiving a warning, for the first time he did not heed her advice. On October 24, 1957, Christian Dior died of a heart attack while in Italy.

After Dior's death, Yves Saint Laurent, a young designer who had joined the firm four years earlier, became the house's lead fashion designer. In 1960, Yves Saint Laurent was called up for military service, which forced him to leave his post. He was replaced by Marc Boan, followed in 1989 by Gianfranco Ferre. In October 1996, John Galliano took the place of the chief fashion designer of the House of Christian Dior.

To date, stores brand Dior can be found in 43 countries of the world, including Japan, China, Australia, Brazil and other countries.

For more than seventy years, the French Fashion House Christian Dior has been spoken of as one of the main symbols of fashion and the cradle of the most famous couturiers of the 20th century. And in our time, no one has any doubts that Dior is one of the most reputable brands in the world market. But at the same time, few people know what exactly this brand began with ...

And it all started almost immediately after the end of World War II - in the fall of 1946, when the 40-year-old C. Dior, quite wise in life, created a gallery in which paintings were exhibited famous masters brushes such as Dali and Picasso. The future trendsetter announced his exhibition on October 8, 1946, but he did not stop there. Immediately after the presentation of his first brainchild, Dior begins to develop clothes and exclusive hats for orders from various fashion houses already well-known at that time. Soon he released his own collection "Corolla Line". She made a splash in the fashion world and was called "new look". Slim waist, corsets, skirts, ankle length and unusual cut sleeves of dresses and blouses, more reminiscent of kimonos.

However, not everything went so smoothly at first. Along with laudatory reviews, Dior received a lot of negative reviews, many critics began to attack him, who believed that he made the lady ugly. He said that he created his models in order to make women even more beautiful. Women wanted to be graceful, they wanted to wear beautiful clothes. And Dior helped them just here - sophisticated models turned a broad-shouldered female soldier into an elegant lady. And, despite the many spiteful critics, every show of Christian Dior's models was taken "for an encore!" He was awarded the Oscar of High Fashion.

The master of haute couture had a strict rule: “I don’t mind if you are scolded, but on the front pages of newspapers. But I will be sad if my name and my work are mentioned words of praise but on the last pages. it popular expression became the motto for many followers of Christian Dior!

Fashionistas expected each show of Dior with special trepidation. Dior named each dress beautifully, as if writing a play with interesting characters. Each collection was associated with theatre, literature, flowers, museums and, of course, with beloved Paris, a city that has always been considered the trendsetter of all world fashion.

For a long time, Christian Dior had small house fashion for VIPs, but the master wanted something more. Without thinking twice, Dior opened a fur department and a company to create exclusive perfumes and toilet water"Perfume Dior". He wanted all his outfits to be accompanied by a stunning fragrance with a whole train of desires. Parisian fashionistas received Miss Dior, Diorama and Diorissimo perfumes as gifts. Dior became the founder of fashion design licenses upper class. Thanks to the master, the concept of “haute couture” appeared (“ haute couture"). The public, in gratitude, presented Dior with the Order of the Legion of Honor.

Since then, every banker wanted to be honored to finance any new venture of the rising star of the world fashion. Aristocrats literally stood in line for Dior's blessing. Once even British Queen invited a celebrity to show unique models latest collection(The screening took place at the French Embassy in London). Later, the couturier showed new collection aristocratic families of England. The guests of the show were Princess Margaret, the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.

Christian Dior was superstitious and before the start of almost every show, he laid out tarot cards. In addition, at each show there were a lot of lilies of the valley - the fashion designer's favorite colors.

The master created each model, using not a sober calculation, as many businessmen do when creating their new projects, but an illusory representation, the perception of the audience. He, like Pygmalion, created unique image Galateas, cutting off all unnecessary, making beautiful image women.

Under Dior, several industries were created: he invented shoes, gloves, hats, belts, jewelry. Dior's most famous motif is the lily of the valley, which he literally elevated to the rank of worship. His firms operated in many countries.

The master was the creator of a "new image" and a new type of business, combining various industries to create a single image of Dior. Hats and caps different styles and sizes - Dior's favorite accessory. Another of the most noticeable elements of almost all outfits, Christian Dior considered bows.

The master was very worried about the future of the House of Dior. He believed that his Haute Couture House was a laboratory of ideas and a forge of new talents. High fashion must be ahead of its time, defining the future of fashion. But, he wanted the models created in his Fashion House to be worn not only by VIPs. All women should wear them, he believed, in order to always look beautiful, fragrant with amazing aromas. He dreamed of women feeling fashion, being able to understand fashion and wearing fashionable outfits.

Couturier did not live to old age and died at the age of 52 in 1957, having become famous all over the world in a little more than a decade! Today, in the city of Granville, there is a museum that contains everything related to the life and work of Christian Dior.

After the death of the Master, the House of Dior was headed by a young fashion designer, Dior's closest assistant, Yves Saint Laurent. Later, the place of the main fashion designer was taken by Mark Boan. After the house of Dior was acquired by Barnard Arnault, he appointed Jean Franco Ferre to the position of chief fashion designer. Since 2012, Raf Simons has become the main fashion designer, but only four years have passed, and an experienced fashion professional, Maria Grazia Chiuri, took his place. This woman became the creative director of the Dior brand, but none of the couturiers changed the concept of Christian Dior. In the models of the House of Dior, there are still flowers, a lot of flowers. Especially the lilies of the valley.

Christian Dior is perhaps the most famous brand in the world today. fashion houses, Dior stores and boutiques are available in Australia, China, America and Brazil. It is worth paying the first attention to the diversity of the assortment. This includes clothes, shoes, cosmetics, and accessories.
Couturiers of the House of Dior have preserved the brand, using all the symbols of Christian - flowers, flower classics, nature. The collections are saturated with neon colors, geometric patterns. Bouffant skirts, jackets and simple blouses- this is also present in the models.

The key idea of Dior, who idolized women, is the belief that their clothes should be stylish and fashionable. It is on this that the concept of the Dior brand is based - both then and now. Dior women amaze with their elegance, sensuality and sexuality. A woman must always be beautiful!

As soon as any fashionista hears the name "Christian Dior", she can immediately understand that we are talking about the most refined, expensive and high-quality products that you can imagine. Yes, that's exactly what it is: Christian Dior and his offspring - the Dior fashion house - this is precisely the synonym for luxury and nobility.

In fairness, it should be noted that the roots of this brand do not go back to hoary antiquity, because the first collection of the Dior fashion house was released only in 1947. However, since that time, the development of the fashion brand has been going by leaps and bounds, almost never stopping for a second.

Christian Dior - the father of new fashion

No one in the family of the future guru of the fashion industry could have imagined that Christian would become the founder of a new trend in the fashion world. Another fate was being prepared for him - entering the school of political science did not at all contribute to the development of artistic inclinations. The world of haute couture would lose a lot if young Dior did become a diplomat, as his family wanted.

However, everything did not go as planned by the relatives of the future fashion designer. In 1930, the Dior family suffered two misfortunes at once - first Christian's mother died, and then his father lost all his fortune and fell ill with tuberculosis. As a result, it was on the shoulders of the young Dior that the care of the maintenance of the family fell.

It was here that the passion for art came to the rescue, the first signs of which were already noticeable in the boy’s childhood. Christian took up the sale of his own sketches and drawings. And so, in 1938, there was a fateful turn in the life of Dior: his work attracted the attention of the famous designer of those years, Robert Piguet. Three years later, Christian Dior began working for Fashion house Lucien Lelong, a year later, opened his own perfume laboratory, and in 1946 the Fashion House was born, which received the name of its founder.

1947 is considered to be a landmark year in the history of the Christian Dior brand. It was at this time that Christian's first line of clothing was shown, turning the world of post-war fashion upside down. Dior's New Look collection was a bombshell. The attention of everyone - from leading fashion designers to ordinary women - was riveted to the Dior show.

Although the collection and the very direction of New Look were accepted by society with enthusiasm, there was a place for criticism. So, Chanel, Balenciaga and some other gurus of the fashion world believed that “ new look» promotes excessive pomposity. Crinolines, narrow bodices, a huge amount of fabric for tailoring dresses and suits, hats, more reminiscent of works of art - all this seemed out of place in countries that were just rising to their feet after the bloodshed and horrors of war. However, it turned out that Christian Dior was absolutely right: it was precisely such outfits, emphasizing the femininity, grace and fragility of lovely ladies, that became an incentive that helped women remember their natural essence.

After the appearance of New Look, the career of Dior and his Fashion House rapidly went up. In the early fifties, the fashion designer presented new clothing lines Longue, Vertical, Oval, Oblique. This was followed by the manufacture of shoes, jewelry and underwear, and Christian Dior branches appeared in London, Caracas, Mexico City, as well as in Chile, Australia, and Cuba.

In 1957, the Fashion House suffered a loss - its founder died.

Christian Dior after 1957

During Dior's lifetime, he was assisted by none other than the young Yves Saint Laurent, at that time an unknown graduate of the Chambre Syndicale school. Dior noticed the talent young man and brought him closer to himself, and after the death of the founder of the brand, it was Saint Laurent who became the head of the House. In 1960 he goes to serve military service, and his place is taken by Mark Boan, who led the brand until 1989.

It was he who chose for Christian Dior new scenario development, offering to abandon the luxury that the founder of the company assumed, however, wide circles quickly began to lose interest in the updated fashion brand. This was the reason that Boana was removed from his post, handing her over to Gianfranco Ferre, who managed to return the Christian Dior brand to its former recognition.

In 1996, John Galliano, a young provocateur, was appointed to the post of chief fashion designer of the fashion brand, who brought a fair amount of avant-garde and theatricality to the refined femininity of Christian Dior products. And Galliano would have been at the helm of the brand for a long time and successfully, if not for his anti-Semitic statements, which caused the promising Briton to be removed from office.

Since the end of 2011, Belgian designer Raf Simons has been the creative director of the Christian Dior fashion brand, with an original minimalist approach to high fashion.

Christian Dior: fashion for all time

So, the history of the Christian Dior brand is full of iconic haute couture events, the path that Christian Dior entered, and on which eminent gurus of the fashion industry continue to successfully walk.
