If we want to have things made of this material in our wardrobe and wear them for a long time, we need to be able to wash them so as not to stretch the products, and also know how to restore the shape of damaged clothes.

Why do woolen items shrink?

There are a few known reasons this trouble:

  1. Delicate fabrics, which include wool, primarily require special temperature conditions during washing. Optimal temperature water - 30 °C. The hotter the water, the more likely that the product will fit.
  2. The second reason is the wrong detergent. Wool is never washed with ordinary powder: the alkali contained in it destroys the fibers, they become coarser and shrink, as a result the product is deformed.
  3. Machine washable without using a special program, it spoils woolen products. In addition to the fact that the jacket or hat will decrease in size, the fibers of the fabric may become matted, causing the item to look like felt.

Fabrics that shrink the most when washed are made from natural materials- wool, cotton and their mixtures

It is believed that the first woolen items appeared around 1500 BC: it was then, according to archaeologists, that people domesticated sheep and goats and began to use not only skins, as was the case before, but the sheared wool of a living animal.

Sheep wool is most often used to produce wool fabric.

Universal ways to save shrunken woolen items

This is a rhetorical question, since there are too many “variables” in this problem that influence the answer. Sometimes stretching a product is very easy, sometimes it is impossible. It depends:

  • on the degree of shrinkage;
  • on the composition of the fabric (pure wool or mixed wool);
  • from the methods of “resuscitation” used.

How to return an item to its original size if it shrinks

If the item has not shrunk much, then you can stretch it in the following way:

  • soak the product in cool water for 15 minutes;
  • remove and squeeze slightly without twisting;
  • Lay a large towel on the table and lay out a sweater on it.

By correctly laying out the item to dry, you will eliminate the need to iron it in the future.

Natural wool is very hygroscopic (absorbs moisture well), so be prepared for the drying process to last for a day.

During this entire time, change the wet towel for a dry one and periodically stretch the affected product with your hands in the directions you need.

The hygroscopicity of wool fabric is simply incredible: it can absorb up to 33% of its own weight in water and still remain dry to the touch.

Because wool dries slowly, it can be tempting to speed up the process. Under no circumstances use a heater, hair dryer, placement on a radiator or other express methods. All this will only do harm.

When shaping the sweater, make sure that after stretching it does not become deformed in width

For sweaters and other items made of mixed fabric, a method such as steaming is suitable.

  1. Spread on ironing board clean sheet and spread the product on its surface.
  2. Steam it with an iron through damp gauze, stretching it with your free hand to shape the sleeves and length the bottom.

If a jumper or blouse is dear to you, then take note of another method that can be called extreme. It consists of putting a wet thing on yourself and walking around in it until it dries. In the process of such “natural” drying, you should try to pull the sleeves and the lower edge of the product in order to stretch them along the length. The good thing about this method is that the impressions from the drying process are guaranteed to lead to a solid understanding of the rules for washing woolen items: you won’t want to repeat them.

A wool jacket that has shrunk - we will stretch it on the carpet

To reliably and safely stretch the jacket without losing its shape, we will use the “grandmother’s” method. It will require a solution of the following ingredients:

  • 5 liters of cold water;
  • 5 tablespoons of ammonia;
  • 1 tablespoon of turpentine;
  • 1 tablespoon cologne.

Operating procedure:

  1. Soak the affected product for an hour and a half in the solution.
  2. Rinse in clean water the same temperature and squeeze a little.
  3. Baste the jacket to a piece of thick fabric. To do this, spread a cloth on the table - a tablecloth, folded sheets in 4 layers, terry towel. Lay the jacket on top of the fabric, stretch it with your hands and begin sewing it along the contour to the fabric below. Make stitches in 2 cm increments. While sewing, constantly adjust the position of the jacket.
  4. Stretch the fabric to which the jacket is sewn onto the frame (as indicated in the original recipe). In modern realities, you can do it simpler: lay out the fabric with the jacket on a cleaned rug and attach it to it with pins, pulling it tightly. To do this, you will need a helper to hold the fabric taut while you pin it to the carpet.
  5. Dry your jacket this way.

Precautionary measures:

  • this method is absolutely not suitable if there are small children or playful animals in the house;
  • count and write down the number of pins used: you should collect the same number later.

Proper care of deformable items

Deformed (shrunken and stretched) items require even more careful handling than ordinary woolen items.

Woolen items require special care. Wash it incorrectly can cause your favorite sweater to shrink. Therefore, it is important to strictly follow the care instructions indicated on the product tag. If a woolen sweater has already shrunk after washing, then do not despair and throw the item away. It can be stretched at home. For this purpose, it is necessary to choose methods that will help return the sweater to its original size and will not harm the material.

After the next wash, you may suddenly find that your wool sweater has shrunk by several sizes. It is impossible to wear it in this condition. There may be several reasons for shrinkage:

  1. Wash in hot water. Wool should not be washed or rinsed at water temperatures above 30 degrees.
  2. Wrong mode. When washing an item in a machine, you need to select a special mode for wool, or, if it is not available, choose a delicate mode.
  3. Washing powder. You should choose special detergents suitable for wool. They are often available in liquid form. This applies to both hand and machine washing.
  4. Mechanical impact. Woolen items should not be strongly rubbed, twisted or wrung out using an automatic machine.
  5. Unnatural wool. Low quality material can also cause the product to shrink.
  6. Temperature change. In the washing machine, hot water is constantly replaced by new cold water from the water supply. As a result, the wool threads shrink.

Effective ways

Regardless of the reasons for the shrinkage, you can try to return the wool item to its previous size.

First you need to assess the scale of the problem. Sometimes they only sit down individual elements sweaters: sleeves, collar, etc. In this case, you can simply put the item on yourself and wear it for several hours.

If the sweater after washing only fits on the child, you will have to resort to other methods.

Re-wash

Wedge is knocked out with wedge. You can use this proverb to stretch a shrunken jacket. After washing, you will need to soak the product again in cold water for 10-20 minutes without adding washing powder and other detergents. After the allotted time has passed, the item should be wrapped in a towel and lightly squeezed. Then you need to dry the product in one of the following ways:

  1. Place the sweater on a table or other flat surface. Leave for 30 minutes. Afterwards, you need to carefully stretch the item in all directions every 15 minutes until the jacket is completely dry. Particular care should be taken when stretching the cuffs and collar as they may become permanently deformed.
  2. The wet product can be placed on a dry towel and stretched until same size. Then you should pin the item to the towel with pins. It is important that there are as many fasteners as possible. Otherwise, after drying, waves will appear on the sweater.
  3. If the jacket has shrunk vertically, that is, it has decreased in length and has not changed much in width, you can dry it by hanging it on a hanger. Before doing this, the hanger must be wrapped in a towel or other thick fabric so that the product does not become deformed. As a result, the item will stretch under its own weight.
  4. You can put it on yourself and walk around in it until it dries completely. The disadvantage is discomfort from wearing wet things. Therefore, if there is a mannequin in the house suitable size, a damp jacket can be put on it. The same method can be used to stretch a shrunken wool hat. For this purpose, it is convenient to put it on a three-liter jar.

The main thing when drying a shrunken sweater is to constantly monitor the process. It is necessary to regularly check whether it is correct so that it does not become deformed. If necessary, the jacket should be pulled out manually, giving the desired shape.

  • wet the shrunken sweater with water;
  • place the product on a dry towel and squeeze a little;
  • lay the item on a flat surface and cover with a thick cotton cloth;
  • iron the top with an iron and treat with steam, turning on the steam mode;
  • During and after steaming, you need to stretch the jacket with your hands.

The procedure should be repeated until the wool is completely dry. Then you should leave the item for a while, as the fabric will be very hot.

Block it

This the method will work for stretching woolen items knitted by yourself.

Algorithm of actions:

  • rip the product apart at the seams;
  • moisten each resulting element;
  • baste the wet parts to previously prepared dense objects of the appropriate size, for example, pieces of cardboard;
  • leave until completely dry;
  • sew back at the seams.

It is worth altering woolen clothes only if you have confidence in your cutting and sewing skills. You also need to make sure that you can rip and sew the item without harming the material.

Available means

If the above methods do not help, then you can use auxiliary means.

This is not difficult to do, since almost everything necessary substances are always at hand.

  • rinse the shrunken sweater in water, the temperature of which should not exceed 30 degrees;

  • mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar and 200 ml of water;
  • Spray the resulting solution onto the item using a spray bottle, after hanging it on a hanger;
  • treat the surface with an iron, turning on the steam mode.

Do not touch the wool with the iron.

Hydrogen peroxide

If your jacket is stretched, you can use hydrogen peroxide.

Procedure:

  • dilute 2 tablespoons of peroxide in 10 liters of cold water;
  • soak the item in the prepared solution;
  • leave for 3 hours;
  • place the product on a towel and gently squeeze out excess moisture;
  • hang the sweater on hangers.

While waiting for the item to dry, you need to stretch it manually every 15 minutes.

Turpentine and ammonia

The following method will help you quickly fix a shrunken sweater:

  • mix 2 tablespoons of turpentine, 6 tablespoons of ammonia, 2 tablespoons of vodka or cologne and 5 liters of water;
  • soak the product in the resulting mixture;
  • leave for 40-60 minutes;
