What is the best baby soap for newborns? Rating of products that are safe for baby's skin. Which soap is best

The modern market of perfumes and cosmetics is represented by a wide range of soaps. On sale there is a soap with various properties: medicinal, antibacterial, liquid.

What should you pay attention to when choosing soap?

For everyday use, soap is chosen depending on the type of skin.

Normal to oily skin

For these skin types, it is better to choose a soap with an exfoliating effect. When washing with such soap, it will remove dead skin particles from the skin and make it velvety due to those natural particles contained in the soap (crushed peach pits, plums). You can use this soap no more than 2-3 times a week.

Dry and sensitive skin

Soaps for these skin types use artificial granules instead of natural scrubs, which are more gentle on the skin. Owners of dry and sensitive skin can use this soap only once a week.

Soap varieties

Designed to improve skin that is prone to dermatitis. The composition of therapeutic soap includes tar and sulfur and is used only as directed by a dermatologist.

The most hygienic type of soap to use. The slightly acidic liquid soap is gentle on the skin. Only natural ingredients are used as fragrances in liquid soap.

This type of soap can only be used occasionally as a disinfectant, as bacterial soap dries out the skin very much.

This type of soap is considered the most neutral in terms of PH and is recommended for use not only for children, but also for adults for everyday face washing.

Soap is an everyday hygiene product, so it is advisable to use soaps that contain only natural ingredients.

Russia is developing detergents, including soaps, with a minimum content of surface-active substances (surfactants) and phosphates. These substances have a negative impact not only on the environment, but also on human skin. Some experts believe that the safest soap is 72% laundry soap. But people are arranged in such a way that they not only make high demands on the quality of the composition of soap, but also want to use a bar of soap that is beautifully designed with a pleasant smell.

Composition of natural soap

The soap base is represented in soap by animal or vegetable fats. In addition to them, the composition of the soap includes:

  • Glycerol;
  • Pigments on a mineral basis;
  • Natural supplements in the form of medicinal herbs.

In the case when vegetable fats are used in the manufacture of soap, preservatives are introduced into the composition of the soap, which the manufacturer must indicate on the packaging of the soap. If preservatives are represented by essential oils, vitamin E, salicylic acid, then the shelf life of such soap does not exceed 1.5 years from the date of issue.

Fake

There is a boom in private soap factories in Russia. Handicraft soap production can be immediately distinguished. The soap produced in such soap factories differs in shape. It is usually not packaged in a wrapper and cut by weight. It is impossible to control the manufacturing technology at private soap factories, so there is no guarantee that the soap is natural. Artificial dyes and preservatives and fragrances are added to the soap, which makes the soap very attractive, but not safe.

The right choice of natural soap

A little about laundry soap

How to choose the right baby soap

Your baby's skin needs to be taken care of from the moment he is born. For children, it is extremely important to maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the skin. The main assistant in the care of children's skin and its cleansing is children's soap, which has its own characteristics and varieties.

Varieties

The skin of the baby has significant differences from adults. They are much thinner, more sensitive, prone to allergic reactions. The system of sebaceous and sweat glands is not yet perfect in the children's epidermis, which makes it defenseless against harmful environmental factors. That is why baby soap is so different from ordinary soap, just like washing powder, shampoo and other products.

A product intended for children is more neutral, contains less aggressive detergents and a smaller amount of them. It mainly consists of natural ingredients, ideally it is completely organic. The main requirement for children's soap is its absolute safety.

There are three types of soap for babies according to their consistency.

  1. solid agent most familiar to a wide range of customers, especially the older generation. It lathers well and washes away dirt from both skin and children's clothing. It is bar soap that is recommended for use in the presence of stains on the clothes and underwear of the child. It will cope well with the cleaning mission assigned to it, while it does not contain substances that are aggressive for the skin. Nevertheless, such a product can be quite harsh on the delicate and sensitive skin. It can dry out the epidermis excessively, so it should be used no more than once a week for washing the entire body. It can be used daily for washing clothes and washing hands, for example, after going outside.
  2. Liquid soap much more gently and gently affects the dermis. It has a convenient dispenser that allows you to get the right amount of product using only one hand, which is very convenient for a mother coping with her baby alone. Its delicate effect, convenience and pleasant aroma make it possible to use the composition for daily hygiene, especially since washing the baby is required quite often.
  3. Cream soap can be both liquid and lumpy. Usually, in addition to the cleansing function, it has other useful properties, depending on the additives included in the composition. Manufacturers often add ingredients that have the function of moisturizing, killing bacteria, or reducing inflammation. Be sure to include emollients in the composition of such products, for example, glycerin.

Solid, liquid and cream soaps have different properties. It is very convenient to have all these products on hand to quickly deal with any surprise.

Compound

All the ingredients that make up baby soap can be divided into three categories: these are foaming agents and surfactants, caring and additional components: perfume composition, stabilizers, dyes.

As surfactants, toilet soap may contain sodium lauryl and laureth sulfates. For children's skin, these substances are too aggressive and can cause allergic rashes. As a gentle detergent component, manufacturers can use palm or palm kernel, coconut oils or animal fats. If the use of animal products is not expected in your daily life, pay attention to sodium tallowate and avoid it - this is how detergent components derived from animal fat or its combinations are labeled. Other designations, such as palmate or cocoate, mean vegetable raw materials based on cosmetics.

Without fail, children's products contain caring components. To soften the skin during preparation, glycerin and lanolin, boric acid and spermaceti can be used. To give the desired properties, natural oils and plant extracts are added to the composition. Many herbs have a pronounced healing effect:

  • Soap with a string is famous for its excellent sedative effect, it is a remedy for allergies, inflammation and bacteria.
  • Products with plantain extract are known for their wound healing effect, with chamomile - soothe and disinfect, with calendula - moisturize and fight inflammation, with celandine - heal wounds, disinfect.
  • Lavender soap well calms the nervous system, promotes excellent sleep.
  • A product containing olive oil or avocado oil softens, fights peeling and other skin problems.
  • Products with milk gently and gently affect the epidermis and moisturize. Soap with fir and spruce needles has bactericidal and regenerating properties.

Any industrial soap is made using various thickeners, preservatives and stabilizers. These are the necessary components to give the product the proper appearance and pleasant texture. When choosing the most natural soap in the store, you can pay attention to products without additives and fragrances, dyes.

A completely organic remedy can only be found in small shops selling handmade goods, or you can cook it yourself. So you can be sure of the quality of the ingredients.

Benefit and harm

Baby soap has certain positive properties that can be used not only for baby skin care, but also for adults. When creating recipes, the safest components, mild detergents, are usually used. A quality baby wash is made without sulfates and without parabens.

It is because of its composition that it is hypoallergenic, and thanks to useful additives it can have moisturizing, softening, disinfecting and antibacterial effects.

A fairly large number of people prefer to wash their face with baby soap. Many who are desperate to find a suitable cleanser and make-up remover opt for this product, believing that this is the best proven skin cleanser. Ladies who use it say that it helps get rid of acne. However, like regular soap, baby soap often dries out the skin, even with mild surfactants and a neutral pH. Users recommend using in this case not a solid product, but a liquid one, or use products for bathing babies.

Some consider the use of soap, including baby soap, as one of the factors in premature skin aging.

In addition to regular washing, users recommend using this product instead of shampoo, considering that this is the most suitable treatment for oily hair and dandruff. But many believe that it can still dry out and weaken hair. Also, baby soap, due to the use of mild detergent components, is simply not able to clean difficult dirt, such as varnish, residues of styling products, grease, sweat and dust.

Of course, you can use children's products for washing hair, face and body, if they suit your skin type and curls. They are usually hypoallergenic and may have moisturizing and antimicrobial effects. It should be noted that antibacterial agents are not recommended to be used constantly at home. This generates more microbes that have adapted to the difficult conditions of survival. It is best to use antibacterial products in hospitals and people with a reduced immune system, in other cases, ordinary soap will do.

When choosing a soap, pay attention to its composition and the availability of a quality certificate, and also remember that it has a specific purpose, and with a different use case, it may not only not bring the results you expect.

Choice by age

When choosing a soap, you need to focus on several important points. The age of the child is of decisive importance. For newborn crumbs, the product must be absolutely safe. It is desirable if it is a soap without alkali, dyes, flavors and harmful substances. As detergent components, vegetable and animal fats can be used - coconut or palm oil, there are products with fat tail fat of sheep or a combination of animal fats. Check the labeling: it will most likely say "0+" or "from birth". Such a product is usually odorless or has a light, subtle aroma.

It is also better to choose colorless or white cream formulations, as they contain the least amount of dyes.

An older child will like more interesting options. After five years, you can purchase colored or figured soap. Most often, pleasant flavors are added to it, imitating caramel, chocolate, strawberries and similar goodies. The kid will be happy with such a hygiene product, and everyday procedures will turn into a game.

The main thing is to make sure that the child is not allergic to any component of such a product, and also that it would not occur to him to try such a beautiful and fragrant piece.

When choosing a detergent, it is first of all necessary to pay attention to the composition. Neither the brand nor the assurances of the sellers will give you such exhaustive information as the list of ingredients. Avoid the presence of dyes, perfume compositions, synthetic components. It is unlikely that you will be able to find goods on store shelves without artificial ingredients at all, but analyze the composition - the more natural ingredients in the product, the better.

The pH environment should be neutral for a soft and delicate effect on the skin of the crumbs. It is not yet fully formed, thin and defenseless, so aggressive alkali can dry out and damage it.

  • Sanosan is a German company specializing in products for problematic and damaged skin. It does not use mineral oils in its compositions, but parabens can be found in them.

Russian counters abound with a variety of types of baby soap: solid, liquid, antibacterial. How to choose what is actually safe and useful? Roskachestvo experts advise focusing on the age of the child and carefully read the label.

Choose by age

✔︎ Up to a year. Soap is not recommended for bathing babies. Only special foams and gels for this age - with a minimum of detergent components, without fragrances, dyes and other allergens.

✔︎ One to three years. Suitable cream soap with a large number of caring ingredients, oils and herbal extracts. It should have a neutral Ph (from 7 to 10) and contain almost no fragrances and dyes.

✔︎ Ages 3 and up. You can use soap with safe dyes, in bright packaging, in the form of toys - this helps to teach the child about hygiene. But it is better to buy it in pharmacies or company stores.

Checking

✔︎ Smell. It should be neutral, “soapy”, or smell like the fragrance indicated on the label - chamomile, calendula, etc. A rancid smell is unacceptable.

✔︎ Stamp. On a piece of high-quality soap, the manufacturer's seal is clearly readable.

How to wash your hands properly

Rospotrebnadzor experts advise in public places to learn how to wash hands the way professional bacteriologists do, in three stages. First you need to lather your hands and wash off the foam with water. Then lather your hands again and, if the faucet is not touch-sensitive, lather the valves or the mixer handle. Wash off the soap with water. Then lather your hands a third time, rinse off the foam and close the already clean faucet.

Soap does not kill bacteria!

We bathe the baby without soap

You can and should alternate "soapy" baths with healing herbal ones.

1 When choosing herbs for a bath, you should consult a pediatrician. Also, consider the medicinal properties of herbs. For example, plantain perfectly heals minor scratches, chamomile relieves irritation on the skin, aloe has anti-inflammatory properties, lavender will help the baby calm down and fall asleep faster, a string saves with allergies. It is better to use ready-made herbal preparations purchased at a pharmacy.

2 Before bathing a child, test the infusion for allergies. Soak a cotton swab in it and wipe a small area of \u200b\u200bthe baby's skin in the elbow area. If during the day, then this decoction is not suitable for bathing.

3 You need to brew the grass at least an hour before bathing. The decoction must be infused. Be sure to find the recommended proportions on the herb packaging. Usually water infusions are prepared in a ratio of 1:10. For the first bath, it is better to brew one herb, then add a second one after a couple of days, etc. But it is not recommended to use more than four herbs at once.

4 When bathing, be careful not to get water drops in your baby's mouth. You need to start bathing from 5–7 minutes, gradually bringing it up to 15–20 minutes at a water temperature of 35–37 degrees. After bathing, do not rinse the baby with water, but simply blot the skin with a diaper, given that some herbs can leave stubborn stains on the fabric.

5 To wash your hair, use special herbs that strengthen your hair. For example, burdock. Its root is especially useful for hair. Such a decoction makes the hair thick, gives it shine, strengthens curls and curls. It is necessary to brew 20 g of crushed burdock root in a glass of boiling water. Infuse for 30 minutes, cool and strain.

Korney Chukovsky, with the lines “Long live fragrant soap ...”, called on children to cleanliness and hygiene, which was especially relevant at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as in post-war Russia.

Do I need to use soap today, is it safe to wash my face with it every day, and what are the main functions of soap?

An analysis of more than a dozen studies conducted in scientific laboratories around the world showed that daily handwashing with soap reduces the incidence of viruses during epidemics by 21%, infections of gastrointestinal infections by 31%.

This once again proves to us that you need to wash your hands with soap. A piece of solid toilet soap today is a necessary hygiene product that every family has, it is used by adults and children.

Interestingly, the first soap in our country was only a luxury item. In the XIV-XV centuries, soap was given on special occasions: on birthdays and weddings. But what can I say, if 80 years ago (in the childhood of our grandmothers) soap was in short supply. Hair was cleaned with water with bread and ashes, linen was washed with coastal clay or soda.

The very hard soap that is sold in stores today was invented in the 8th century by the famous Arab alchemist Gabir ibn Khaen. It took almost 9 centuries until the Russian Empire first began to produce industrial soap. But despite this, until the middle of the 19th century, only nobles used soap.

At this time, the first washbasin appeared, and in aristocratic circles, ladies gathered for a fashionable action - washing with soap. The 20th century greatly changed the areas of use of soap, since it was at this time that synthetic detergents and various chemical additives to it appeared. It is interesting that it was in Russia in 1912 that the first synthetic surfactants without fats were invented, but they did not find wide distribution. Subsequently, already in 1930, the production of these substances was launched by the Americans, thanks to which today we have washing powders, shampoos, and liquid soaps.

To understand how safe it is to use soap, we will analyze its composition.

Soap composition

Solid soap:

  • a mixture of salts of higher fatty acids (lauric, oleic, stearic, palmitic),
  • glycerol,
  • flavors,
  • dyes.

Solid soap is obtained by the reaction of saponification of oils and fats with sodium hydroxide (alkali). Solid soap is always alkaline because it contains sodium hydroxide residues.

Liquid soap: almost always obtained on the basis of synthetic surfactants (surfactants).

Difference from solid soap: gives good foam due to surfactants, less alkaline pH, the presence of various softening and moisturizing additives.

Basic functions of soap

  • Cleansing dirt and hand hygiene

The soap molecule consists of two parts: hydrophobic (afraid of water) - contains long organic radicals and thus copes with pollution, and the hydrophilic part contains a carboxyl group, which is responsible for the interaction of the molecule with water.

  • Soap antibacterial function

Specialists are developing new components to combat pathogenic bacteria on the surface of the skin. Currently, there are two most common antibacterial components: triclosan and triclocarban, which are registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency as components of hazardous pesticides. The worst thing is that these components are very persistent, and when we wash them down the drain, they end up in rivers and lakes.

A study of the composition of water in the Great Lakes, located in Canada and feeding the Atlantic Ocean (the most famous Lake Michigan), showed that triclosan was found in 90 percent of water samples and in many fish. What we use every day and pour into the sewer, as a result of the cycle, will certainly return to us. Triclosan is even found today in samples of breast milk. In our country, triclosan and triclocarban are permitted soap components.

According to dermatologists, excessive use of antibacterial soap can lead to unpleasant consequences: allergies and disruption of the skin microflora.

The well-known dermatologist Irina Skorogudaeva in many of her interviews has repeatedly emphasized that ordinary solid soap, and even more so antibacterial, destroys beneficial microorganisms on the surface of the skin along with harmful ones. In addition, triclosan soap, with constant use, can be addictive, as it leads to the resistance of microbes and even their mutation. Studies have shown that hospital bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa is generally resistant to its action.

There are several works devoted to the acquisition of microbial resistance to antibiotics under the influence of triclosan. Doctors advise using such soap only in unsanitary conditions. In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a ban on the use of triclosan in soap for general production. You can now buy triclosan soap in America only by prescription in pharmacies.

  • Cosmetic function of soap

In modern conditions, soap products are used as a cosmetic or facial cleanser. Specialists introduce into the composition of the soap components that are gentle on the skin, nourishing, healing, moisturizing and giving it radiance. However, dermatologists advise using only soaps made from natural oils (olive, coconut) or special foams and mousses containing mild surfactants for the face.

Is it safe to use soap?

To answer this question, we turned to specialists, as well as to the scientific literature. It is known that a person needs skin in order to limit the body from an aggressive external environment. As an aggressor, sudden changes in temperature, humidity, various sources of pollution, UV radiation, pathogenic microorganisms, as well as cleansers such as soap can act. The protective function of the skin is performed by the upper lipid layer, located in the stratum corneum. The lipid layer is composed of free fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol, and has an acidic pH of about 4.5-5. Maintaining pH at this level is essential for healthy skin and microflora (LambersH.Int.Cosmet.Science 2006, 28,p.359).

In dermatology, there is even such a thing as the acid mantle of the stratum corneum. The physiological role of such an acid mantle is to protect against the effects of various microorganisms. It is very easy to break such a mechanism. For example, frequent washing of the face with hot water and ordinary solid soap or liquid cleansers containing sodium laureth sulfate or other harsh surfactants.

The lipid layer is extremely easily soluble with solid soap, as well as various hard surfactants.

If the lipid barrier leaves the skin, then water leaves the skin, and at the same time, the acidic environment on the surface is disturbed and the pH rises. Scientists have calculated that normal skin with a slightly acidic environment (pH5-5.5) can be in contact with soap for no more than 10-15 seconds without consequences. It will take about an hour to restore the protective layer of the epidermis after washing with such soap.

There are many reports in scientific articles from Australia, Germany, Japan that the continuous use of soap or alkaline cleanser significantly increases the pH of the skin (Duncan C.N. The effect of anacid icclean server sus soap on the skin pH and micro-flora of adult patients : anon-randomized two group crossover study in anintensive care unit Intensive Crit Care Nurs 2013;29, 291). Korting et al. reported that skin surface pH increased to as high as 8.5 with continuous use of soap on the face and forearm (Korting H.C.Int.J.Cosmet.Science 1991; p.91).

Studies conducted in America have shown that the pH level also affects the protective function of the skin. The skin of hairless mice was exposed to acetone and then the pH was measured. It was found that the protective barrier function of the skin was restored faster in the presence of an acidic solution compared to a neutral one. In an article in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Hatano et al showed that keeping the lipid layer acidic with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) prevented the development of dermatitis in mice. Scientists have found that acidic external agents are able to treat various dermatoses (HatanoY.J.Invest.Dermatol., 2009, 129: 1824-1835).

These acids are now part of many pharmaceutical cosmetics, as well as products used in the treatment of skin diseases.

About handmade soap

When choosing a beautiful handmade soap, you should pay attention to its composition, as well as information about the manufacturer. Some manufacturers use a chemical alkaline base as the basis for handmade soap. At the same time, the composition of such soap will practically not differ from ordinary bar soap. Often, a lot of dyes and flavors are added to hand-made soap, and the word “natural” is also written in order to attract the buyer. The best natural soap is brewed by hand using only natural vegetable oils. For example, coconut, olive, palm. It is worth saying that the cost of such soap in Russia cannot be less than 150-250 rubles.

skin pH in various diseases

The lipid layer, when working properly, is able to withstand various microorganisms, as well as external factors. Normal flora growth is optimal at acidic pH values, while pathogenic bacteria such as S. staphylococcus thrive at a neutral pH level (Körting H.C. ActaDerm. Venereol. 1990). Elevated pH has been observed in skin studies for various diseases. The study involved 100 children with atopic dermatitis. It was recorded that the pH of their skin is significantly higher than that of healthy children. Dermatologists have also found that skin pH is higher in patients with ichthyosis vulgaris (5.3 ± 0.7) than in healthy subjects (4.5). The enzymes responsible for ichthyosis desquamation are dependent on pH, which interferes with the normal desquamation process. Therefore, drugs with lactic acid are used all over the world to treat this disease (ActaDermVenereol 2013, 93, Skin pH: From Basic Science to Basic Skin Care, SabaM. ALIandGil Yosipovitch)

In people suffering from contact dermatitis, as well as athlete's foot, higher pH values were recorded compared to healthy ones.

And finally, a study on teenagers with acne. In vitro acne-causing bacteria at pH 6.5 actively multiplied, and at pH values less than "6" growth was markedly reduced. In a four week study , acne lesions increased in the bar soap group. The pH of the skin of adolescents who used liquid cleansers containing acids decreased.

All these works prove once again that patients suffering from skin diseases should not use hard soaps or other alkaline cleansers. This will only make their illness worse.

Problematic skin is often alkaline, so it needs to be acidified on a regular basis, and not further alkalized with soap. To do this, it is desirable that the facial cleanser contains natural and synthetic acids (lactic, grape, malic, tartaric, citric acids, salicylic acid), as well as prebiotics.

Tips for using soaps and cleansers for the face and body

Solid or liquid soap?

Since ordinary solid soap, as a rule, contains alkali residues in its composition and its pH is always too high, it is best to use such soap only for hands and feet. If possible, purchase a solid soap made from natural oils.
Liquid soap, as well as various shower gels, give good foam due to surfactants. Therefore, their pH is less alkaline. However, the presence of "hard" surfactants (for example, sodium laureth sulfate) makes such an agent difficult to wash off the skin. Some people note that after using shower gels, they have a persistent feeling of "chemistry" on the skin. Therefore, when choosing a liquid soap or gel, you need to pay attention to the composition of the product.

  1. First of all, you need to choose soap depending on which part of the body we want to use it for and for what (cleansing from dirt, bacteria or for cosmetic purposes).
  2. Bar soap is recommended only for washing hands and feet, where the skin is less sensitive. This soap is good to use for disinfection and cleansing of dirt every day. Hands should be washed in warm water with soap.
  3. As a solid soap, it is better to choose baby soap. All its components undergo strict quality control. Often the composition of such soap includes natural plant extracts, which gives it antiseptic properties.
  4. Liquid soap and cream soap, in which the pH is from 5.5 to 6-7, can be used to wash the body, but not daily, but 2-3 times a week in combination with warm, but not hot water.
  5. When choosing liquid soap, as well as facial cleansers, carefully read its composition. It is better to choose products containing mild surfactants: any glucosides, Decylpolyglucose, betaine, polyglycosides, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, sodium cocoylisethinate, Sodiumcoco-sulfate, sulfosuccinate, Sodium sulfosuccinate, Glythereth Cocoate, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Magnesium lauryl sulfate. The less the product foams or lathers, the less surfactant it contains, the better.
  6. Do not buy liquid soap containing dyes and a large amount of fragrance. In general, it is better that liquid soap does not even have a transparent color, but is slightly cloudy. This once again indicates that complexes of correctly selected “soft” surfactants have been added to it.
  7. If your facial skin is problematic, then choose products with an acidic pH (less than 6).
  8. For cleansing delicate or sensitive facial skin, intimate hygiene products are also suitable, which are non-allergenic, but at the same time remove dirt well.
  9. In order to correctly choose a facial cleanser, it is better to contact a dermatologist who will select it for your skin type.
  10. Do not use soap containing triclosan and its analogues, even for hand washing. Only in emergency unsanitary cases.
  11. If you have time, try to cleanse your face and neck using natural ingredients prepared at home.
