Essential oils for skin. Main functions of base oils

In aroma cosmetics, it is important to find a good base for essential oils, because essential oils are highly concentrated herbal essences and require dilution. In a mixture with vegetable oils, essential oils are better perceived by the skin.

In proportion to the oil, the carrier only needs a few drops of essential oil, similarly in cooking, only a pinch of herbs or spices is needed to prepare a dish. As carrier oils in aromatherapy, vegetable oils rich in vitamins, proteins and minerals, obtained by cold pressing, are usually used. They literally "carry" essential oils into the body, lubricate the skin, allowing the aromatherapist's hands to easily glide over the massaged body.

The oils obtained in the process of hot extraction, although much cheaper, are completely unsuitable for aromatherapy due to their low quality. The base carrier oil must be unrefined and not treated with any chemicals. The more strongly processed vegetable oils are, the less vitamins remain in them. In oil mills, dyes and other components may be added, which is also undesirable. For aromatherapy purposes, always use oils (we are talking about fixed oils, not essential oils) unrefined, without any additives, preferably virgin oils. It is unlikely to find such oils on the shelves of the nearest supermarket.

Mineral oils (refined, light, petroleum-derived), such as baby oil, should never be used in aromatherapy as a carrier oil. Mineral oils tend to clog pores, while some vegetable oil molecules are absorbed through the skin. Mineral oils do not contain the nutritional components found in vegetable oils: vitamins, minerals, fatty acids - they nourish and improve the skin. Mineral oil is used in the cosmetic industry due to its ability to not deteriorate. But it remains on the skin like an oil film on water and makes skin breathing difficult.

The shelf life of the carrier, base oil depends on the content of fatty acids and vitamin E in it. Vegetable oils with high content saturated fatty acids last longer than those with a high content of unsaturated fatty acids. The vitamin E content also increases the shelf life of the carrier oil. If you have very sensitive skin, you may be allergic to certain types of carrier oils, and you may want to start with allergy testing on your skin.

What is aromatherapy and how to become beautiful, slim and sexually attractive with the help of essential oils. Types of essential oils and their uses.

Already several millennia ago, the ancients knew about the beneficial effects of essential oils on human health and beauty. Even in the Old Testament, incense such as sandalwood, myrrh, frankincense could be found, and the ancient Egyptians widely used essential oils for embalming, medical and cosmetic purposes. Hippocrates, Avicena and Galen described in their writings the entire spectrum of the use of incense and argued that any disease can be overcome with the help of essential oils.

Types of essential oils

By their effect on the body, essential oils are divided into cleansing, stimulating, tonic, relaxing, harmonizing, strengthening, refreshing, stimulating, soothing.

  • Purifying essential oils include: geranium, lavender, lemongrass, sweet orange, tuberose, rosemary, sage, lemon.
  • Exciting oils are: bergamot, ylang-ylang, geranium, jasmine, cardamom, mandarin, bigardia, rose, sandalwood.
  • Tonic essential oils: basil, bay, clove, lemon, lemon balm, nutmeg, mint, cinnamon, palmarosa, rosemary, citronella, thyme, sage, fir, ginger.
  • Relaxing essential oils: valerian, oregano, lavender, frankincense, myrrh, juniper, chamomile, jasmine.
  • Harmonizing essential oils: geranium, jasmine, oregano, marjoram, mimosa, orange, rose, sandalwood, mandarin.
  • Strengthening essential oils: angelica, lavender, lemon balm, basil, cajuput, nutmeg, mint, rosemary, verbena, cedarwood, lemon, vetiver.
  • Refreshing essential oils: fir, immortelle, mint, lavender, mandarin, fir, orange, lemon.
  • Stimulating essential oils: immortelle, coriander, black pepper, lavender, nutmeg, clove, eucalyptus, mint, rosemary, verbena, juniper, hyssop, lemon.
  • Soothing essential oils: dill, geranium, jasmine, chamomile, lemon balm, vanilla, bigardia.

Any essential oil may have several characteristics. For example, using peppermint essential oil for aromatherapy, you will get a stimulating, refreshing, strengthening and tonic effect. When compiling aromatic mixtures, be sure to take into account the effect of each component so as not to use, for example, tonic and soothing oils in one composition.

Aromatherapy rules

Do not apply essential oils to the skin and mucous membranes directly from the bottle. Any oil must be diluted in base oil, salt or honey before use. In its pure form, only lavender essential oil can be applied to the skin and tea tree. All the rest can provoke a severe burn of the skin and mucous membranes.

Do not overdosing. If the instructions say that you need to take 1-2 drops of cinnamon essential oil per 10 ml of base oil, then drip that much. Exceeding the dosage is fraught with allergies or burns.

Before using a new ester, be sure to check if it causes you allergies.

If you are just starting to learn aromatherapy, then reduce the recommended dose of essential oils by half. If after several uses negative reactions, allergies, discomfort does not occur, then you can safely use the full dose.

Focus on own feelings. No matter how useful and miraculous the oil is, if you do not like its aroma, then you will not benefit from aromatherapy.

Methods for using essential oils

Essential oils are used for cold inhalations, in aroma lamps, for baths, massage. They can be taken orally, as well as mixed with various masks and creams.

For cold inhalations, ether can be inhaled either from a bottle, or apply oil to a tissue, or drop it into a special Mahold inhaler. Inhalations are carried out with eyes closed no more than 5 minutes. Try to breathe evenly, slowly and deeply.

Before adding the essential oil to the bath, it is pre-mixed with a base or emulsifier. The base can be any base oil that suits your skin type, such as olive oil, almond oil, or hazelnut oil. As an emulsifier, take sea salt, milk, honey or bath foam. The water in the bath should not be scalding hot, otherwise the esters will quickly evaporate, and you will not benefit from the procedure.

When using an aroma lamp, you must first pour into it hot water, light a special candle and only then add oil. Depending on the type of ether, the number of drops varies from 1 to 3. Aromatization of the room is carried out after closing all windows and doors. The aroma lamp should not be lit for more than 20 minutes.

For massage, the essential oil is pre-diluted in the base oil and only then applied to the skin. The combination of massage and aromatherapy has a beneficial effect on the respiratory system and skin. During fragrant massage blood circulation improves, lymph stagnation is accelerated, the work of all organs improves.

Essential oils can enrich the composition of ready-made creams and face masks. Oils should be added to a cosmetic product immediately before being applied to the skin. Esters will help to transport nutrients faster cosmetic products to skin cells and several times enhance the effect of a cosmetic product.

Summarize

The effect of the use of oils affects not only appearance, health, sexual life, but also helps to solve a number of psychological problems. That is why aromatherapy can be safely called aromamagic.

Base oils (carrier oils, base oils, base oils, transport, carrier oils) are vegetable oils that are used in aromatherapy to dissolve essential oils, as well as for independent use.

Since essential oils cannot be used in their pure form, base oils used to create aromatic oil mixtures for face and body skin care, hair and massage. By dissolving essential oils in themselves, vegetable oils transport them through the skin.

Base oils are not a shadow of essential oils, but a completely independent product that has its own characteristics, properties and purpose. With their help, you can take care of the skin of the face, neck, chest, use it as a day and night cream, as a make-up remover, base for face or hair masks, and strengthen nails.

Base oils owe their value to their composition: the most valuable polyunsaturated fatty acids, triglycerides, waxes, phosphatides, lipochromes, tocopherols and the entire spectrum of vitamins “from A to U”. Thanks to such components, these oils strengthen the biological membranes of skin cells, stimulate metabolism and regeneration, and have an antioxidant effect. Vegetable oils increase the skin's ability to retain moisture. Paradoxically, but base oils dissolve the deposited secrets of the sweat glands, remove dirt, dust, and cosmetics from the skin surface.

Typically, base oils are obtained by cold pressing from nuts, seeds, fruit pits and grains. There is an exception - Mannoy de Tahiti oil - it is obtained by enfleurage of flowers in coconut oil.

Naturally, the quality of base oils must be high and you can buy them only from trusted companies that do not use various chemical or other additives to reduce the cost.

Some vegetable oils that can be used as the base of a mixture can be bought at the grocery store. But you need to carefully look at the label: the oil must be cold pressed (preferably the first - extra virgin) and without additives. Refined and deodorized oils as a result of processing high temperature lose a lot useful substances so it is best to refrain from using them. The main thing is do not use it for aromatherapy purposes mineral oil. It does not contain components useful for the skin and can be a source of allergies.

Store base oils in a cool, dark place. It is advisable not to leave it open for a long time, because under the influence of air the oils oxidize and become unusable.

Base oils are a complex mixture of fatty acids, saponifiable and unsaponifiable fractions.

Fatty acids are divided into saturated and unsaturated. If fatty acids predominate in the composition of the oil, then it room temperature will be solid. The more unsaturated acids in the oil, the softer it is. When unsaturated acids begin to predominate, the oil will be liquid. Particular attention should be paid to the content of oleic acid (it belongs to the so-called monounsaturated fatty acids). With its dominance, the oil is well absorbed into the skin and the penetration of other active components into it (for example, essential oils) is enhanced. special attention deserve unsaturated fatty acids: linoleic, linolenic and gamma-linolenic acid, as well as their derivatives. The fact is that they are not produced in the human body, so they are called essential unsaturated acids. Linoleic and gamma-linolenic acid are called omega-6 acids. Oils with great content These acids are recommended for dry skin with impaired barrier properties. Vegetable oils that contain linolenic acid and its derivatives are recommended for people who suffer from various skin conditions due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Some derivatives of linolenic acid have unwieldy and long names that are difficult to pronounce, and for simplicity they are called omega-3 acids.

The saponifiable fraction is fatty acids that are combined with glycerol. This faction is responsible for appearance and oil properties. If alkali is added to the saponifiable fraction, then soap can be obtained.

The unsaponifiable fraction is responsible for the regenerating properties, which is useful for aging skin. It usually contains carotenoids, vitamin E, phytosterols and other biologically active substances. It happens that in the production of cosmetics only the unsaponifiable fraction of oil is used (the unsaponifiable fraction of olive oil is especially popular). When combined with alkali, this fraction does not form soap.

Using vegetable oil In cosmetics, oil absorbency and spreadability are important characteristics. If the oil is poorly absorbed by the skin, it will create a feeling of oily skin. But, if the oil is absorbed quickly, then it can be comedonogenic. If the oil does not spread well, it will not spread well on the skin. Therefore, mixtures of several oils are usually used, which provide an optimal ratio of these two parameters.

Regular facial care largely involves the use of natural herbal ingredients. These products include base oils, which are also called carrier oils.

These funds can be used in cosmetic procedures both individually and as oil base for essential oils, as they contain low molecular weight unsaturated fatty acids that help essential oils oil extracts penetrate into the cells of the epidermal layer.

Base oils, depending on the consistency, are divided into liquid and solid. Solids include shea butter, cocoa, coconut, mango, macadamia.

Oil carriers should be natural, certified and cold pressed if possible. This ensures that all of their restorative properties are not affected by heat treatment or chemical additions.

Fragrance, quality and viscosity influence the choice of product, for example, a lighter consistency is suitable for the face, while a heavy consistency is suitable for the body.

Base oils contain a large amount of vitamins E, A and F, which nourish and soften the skin. They are non-volatile because their large molecules are not released as easily as in essential extracts.

Most essential oils perform best at very low doses - on the order of 1-3% of the total concentration with a carrier. Working as a chemical link, they enhance cell regeneration and improve metabolic processes in tissues.

Carriers typically provide nutrients in the form of vitamins and essential fats that complement the effects of essential extracts.

What is this base oil for essential oils, what is its application? What are the main functions, manufacturing features, which is more useful and which is less?

Base oils, what are they used for?

The so-called base oil for oils used with therapeutic purpose, serves as their solvent. In addition, it helps in the use of essential oils in the production of aromatic compositions used both in cosmetology and in other branches of human applied activity. It is quite difficult when performing a massage to apply 1-2 drops of essential oil to the entire surface of the body. But if you dissolve them in much more another oil, then completely.

The main, but not the only purpose of using base oils is to form the basis for the dilution of complex organic esters (essential oils), which are strong-smelling substances that endow perfume and cosmetic compositions with unique and inimitable aromas.

Essential oils themselves, although they are liquid and fluid substances, nevertheless, in their pure form, they can damage the skin, since they are considered very concentrated and aggressive. chemical compounds, and therefore in its pure form are not used, neither in cosmetology, nor in perfumery. Before use, it is customary to dilute them using an oil base.

The range of applications for base oils does not end there. Due to their unique properties, they are used as such (in pure and isolated form) in cosmetology as products intended for softening and moisturizing. skin, as well as for the restoration and nutrition of hair.

What can be the base oil for essential oils?

According to the chemical composition, all base oils are divided into two categories. Types of base oils:

The so-called butters;
Actually, fixed oils.

The chemical composition of the former is dominated by saturated fatty acids, which makes them less fluid and quite thick. Such substances are usually cheaper, but at the same time less useful.

The advantages of such oils include a long shelf life and resistance to microorganisms. They retain their properties longer, deteriorate slowly, and have a significant shelf life.

Fatty base oils are very fluid, due to the predominance of unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in the composition. These substances penetrate very well into the upper layers of the skin, which nourishes and saturates the skin with useful substances.

The disadvantages of fatty base oils include only their short shelf life. Due to the peculiarities chemical composition they are very quickly colonized by bacteria, which can lead to acidification of the oil.

Base oil, functions

The base oil in cosmetology is intended for several purposes. First, it softens and moisturizes hair and skin. Application to the skin contributes to the maximum saturation of the upper layers of the epidermis with valuable substances, which normalizes the functional state of the skin, slows down aging, improves appearance, and so on.

Secondly, the application of base oils promotes loosening of the superficial stratum corneum of the skin, which increases its permeability to many beneficial substances contained in cosmetics.

Thirdly, normalization lipid composition skin helps to increase its protective characteristics. At regular use cosmetics reduces the likelihood of developing septic pathology, increases the regenerative capabilities of the skin.

Base oils, composition and beneficial properties

The basis of base oils, as mentioned above, is formed by fatty oils, both saturated and unsaturated. It is very simple to determine the predominance of one or another component: if the substance thickens strongly already at room temperature, therefore, it belongs to butters.

We can talk about the benefits of unsaturated fatty acids for a long time. The most useful representatives of this group of substances are oleic and linoleic acids.

Both oleic and linoleic acids penetrate very well and quickly through the surface layers of the skin, in which relatively high concentrations of these compounds are formed.

Softened skin retains moisture much better, which prevents drying out, normalizes the appearance, slows down the aging process, increases protective properties, and so on.

To maximize moisturizing abilities, it is important to remember that the surrounding climate is not dry, which is especially true in winter period time when heating is on. by the most best solution in this case will be the use of household humidifiers.

The base oils are hypoallergenic. When applied to the skin, there are almost no hypersensitivity reactions, which significantly expands the range of their use and increases the potential audience.

Base oil - application

The use of base oils in cosmetology, according to the degree of severity therapeutic effect, does not concede to expensive creams. Choosing such cosmetical tools, you need to take into account a number of criteria, which I am going to mention.

Oils should be selected according to the degree of fat content of the skin. If a person has oily skin, it is recommended to use the following oils in the base application: from almond or grape seeds, jojoba and some others. They contribute to the suppression of the activity of the sebaceous glands, which will eliminate the negative characteristics of this type of skin.

How often should these oils be applied? For such oils, the use is limited to once a day, preferably at night, as it is quite oily. You can add various essential oils to it if you wish.
