Useful - harmful cosmetics. Dangerous Cosmetics Ingredients to Avoid

Ever since cosmetics came into existence, it has been criticized. In 17th-century England, a marriage could be annulled if a man proved in court that he had "been deceived" by his wife's makeup and perfume. And later, Queen Victoria declared cosmetics vulgar and indecent and allowed only girls of the most ancient profession to use them.

Today, the main claim to cosmetics is somewhat different. The first is the concealment of potentially toxic ingredients. Considering how many cosmetic "chemicals" we put on our skin every day, including shampoos, shower gels, makeup, various creams, masks and serums, maybe it's really worth reading the labels more vigilantly?

Lists of harmful ingredients

The Internet space is simply flooded with information about the "harmfulness" of certain substances, there are entire organizations advocating for "safe cosmetics." Harmfulness databases exist and are actively promoted cosmetic components It is from these that most consumers learned that "parabens cause cancer." However, such sites mostly only scare people by spreading unprofessional information.

In every country there are special bodies that check cosmetic products for the content of really dangerous substances. Cosmetics that are harmful to humans simply will not end up on store shelves.

Do you trust research?

For example, caffeic acid has been identified as a human carcinogen based on several small studies showing that eating it (!) in in large numbers causes papillomas in mice. Further experiments in the same rodents for 3 years did not cause the emergence of new papillomas. However, the reputation of a “dangerous element” for caffeic acid has already been fixed.

Another complication is that research is being carried out on individual compounds, while hundreds of such substances are plying in human body, connecting with agonists / antagonists. What happens during their interactions, whether a synergistic effect is manifested or, conversely, they “extinguish” each other is not always known.

Developers consider potential harm

Without exception, brands understand that the consumer needs an effective and safe product. It makes no sense to lose millions in courts with buyers. Therefore, when developing cosmetics, all the nuances are taken into account. For example, certain dyes are allowed at 6% concentration in hair dyes, but are prohibited in mascara, eyebrow and eyelash dyes. AT general case- the substance will be introduced into the cosmetic formula, but in such dosages as to exclude harmful effects.

Another example is that all preservatives cause skin irritation if the allowable concentration is significantly exceeded. But for cosmetics a mixture of preservatives is used, which reduces the overall dosage, but increases the effectiveness.

When developing, the reactivity of the ingredients must also be taken into account. After all, an ordinary cream is just a “soup” of chemical substances. It is important that they all react with each other "correctly", without highlighting harmful substances. An ingredient that has reacted “correctly” changes its shape and is not dangerous in the final product. An example is ammonium hydroxide (regulates pH) - reacting with acidic components, it is neutralized to a safe salt.

Another example: SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) - an aggressive surfactant - and its derivative SLES (sodium laureth sulfate). When these two surfactants are combined with betaines side effects are almost completely eliminated, and the effectiveness and environmental friendliness of the formula increases many times even in comparison with soft surfactants, while the price does not increase.

Scary stories about skin penetration

There are very popular rumors that cosmetics will poison you - they say that a woman eats kilograms of lipstick with mercury in a year, all this accumulates in the body. Whatever you put on your skin is absorbed.

But if you are at least a little familiar with the structure of the skin, you know that its main function is protective. Leather is not a “sponge” that absorbs chemicals, it is a “stone wall” that does not let in almost anything. Millions have been spent on skin penetration studies. And now it is known for sure that only caffeine, nicotine and nitroglycerin pass into the skin. And most of the components do not penetrate into the living layers of the skin, do not enter the bloodstream, but only linger in the layers of the stratum corneum and subsequently the most naturally removed by exfoliation.

The cosmetic industry is a constantly evolving mechanism that keeps pace with the development of science and must take into account great amount research. If there is a real risk, the industry solves the problem. However, under pressure from a concerned public, even a hypothetical risk turns into a cause for panic. As you know, fear + ignorance = hatred, and some very skillfully use this formula for their own PR. I hope I managed to convince you that fears about toxic cosmetics are completely unfounded.

Hello everyone!

What are the most harmful substances in cosmetics and what high-quality cosmetics should not contain in their composition.

Perhaps this knowledge will allow you to choose a worthy product for caring for your appearance, which means providing your body not only with beauty and health.

From this article you will learn:

According to the research of Stacy Malkin, the initiator of the movement for safe cosmetics(Campaign for Safe Cosmetics) and author of Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry. Beautiful face: the unsightly underside of the beauty industry), the 15 most dangerous substances have been identified.

15 most harmful ingredients in cosmetics

So, the most dangerous and harmful substances in cosmetics:

  1. Silicone (Silicone) - bypass any cosmetics that contain more than 50% of this component in its composition
    This is especially true for hair products. Choose the one where Silicone free is indicated.
  2. Tallow or animal fat (Animal fat) - promotes the development of bacteria on the skin.
  3. Mineral oil - mineral oil is a product of oil refining. Forms a film on the face and does not allow him to breathe. Dangerous!!! Often included in foundation. Look for the Oil Free label. What oils clog pores
  4. Paraben (parabens) - preservatives (most often indicated as butyl, ethyl, methyl paraben). Cause allergies, dermatitis, breast cancer. When choosing, look for the inscription Haraben free.
  5. Glueen (gluten) - cereal protein, can be dangerous for certain categories of people.
  6. Bentonite (bentonite) - highly toxic bleaching clay.
  7. Glycols (glycol) are toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic.
  8. Talc (talc) is toxic. This is especially true for powder. When choosing, look for the inscription Talc free
  9. Phthalates (Phthalates, BBP, DBP, DEHP, DEP, DIDP) Cause genetic disorders, especially dangerous during pregnancy.
  10. Glycerin (not vegetable). Sucks moisture out of the skin and makes the skin even drier than it was.
  11. Laureth or lauryl sulfate sodium (Sodium Laureth Sulphate). Included in many shampoos. Causes hair loss, dandruff, scalp irritation
  12. Artificial dyes. Labeled as Fd&C or D&C followed by color and number. For example, Fd&cred #6. Dangerous and toxic
  13. Triclosan (Triklozan) destroys endocrine system. Forms toxic products when combined with tap water
  14. Metal salts (mercury, lead, titanium) Mercury, Lead Acetate, plumbous acetate.

Dangerous abbreviations on a cosmetics label

Remember these icons:

  • "PEG"
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • Imidsazolidinyl urea
  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone
  • Methylisothiazolinone
  • Triclosan
  • Triclocarban
  • Triethanolamine (or "TEA")

And it's far from complete list harmful components. The list can be continued for a long time.

Of course, it is worth considering the opinion of manufacturers who endlessly repeat that without some components, cosmetics would simply be impossible to manufacture, that they are harmful only in certain proportions, and they are safe as part of cosmetics.

Even if this is true, and the amount of harmful components in creams is within the normal range, what about the fact that environmentalists are talking about so much?!

About the ability to accumulate harmful components in the body. It turns out, sooner or later, this poison will shoot if it is very for a long time continue to store it in your body.

And also, please, when buying any means of caring for your appearance and household chemicals, pay attention to these icons and give preference to products with them.

This means this manufacturer DOES NOT TEST COSMETICS ON ANIMALS!!!

Cosmetics are our essential daily arsenal. However, they are not always so harmless, as this advertisement draws us. There are components that can cause significant harm to our skin, provoke a deterioration in its condition and premature aging. This means that when buying, you need to carefully study the packaging, and if at least one of the elements listed below is included in the product, look for a safer replacement.

2:825 2:835

1. Methyl-, propyl-, butyl- and ethyl-parabens

Quite often they are used in daily care as preservative stabilizers that inhibit the growth of microorganisms. They are absorbed by the skin and have a slight estrogenic effect, which is unsafe for women for whom this substance is contraindicated - in the presence of certain diseases and during pregnancy.

2:1553 2:9

2. Diethanolamine (dea, dea), triethanolamine (tea, tea)

5. Vaseline (petrolatum)

2:57

Vaseline - derived from mineral oil, which is used as an emollient and is widely used due to its low cost. It disrupts the processes of moisturizing and becomes the cause of those processes that it supposedly should eliminate - dry skin, cracks, etc.

2:564 2:574

6. Stearalkonium chloride

It was originally developed for fabric softeners, and only then found use in creams and hair products, since it is much cheaper than plant extracts. It is toxic and may cause allergic reactions.

2:1090 2:1100

7. Diazolidinyl-urea, imidazo-lidinyl-urea (diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea)

They are used as preservatives. Able to release formaldehyde, which has a toxic effect. May cause contact dermatitis.

> Dangerous cosmetics

The development of the cosmetics industry, associated with intensive synthesis and the introduction of cosmetic intermediates that replace natural raw materials, dictates the need for their careful toxicological control in order to ensure the release of high-quality products that are harmless to the consumer. Defenders environment warn of danger cosmetic products mass consumption.

Cosmetic products - creams, toothpastes, lotions, elixirs, products decorative cosmetics(lipsticks, powders, eye shadows, mascaras, etc.) - are a complex, multicomponent system, which includes fatty, structure-forming, surfactants, emulsifiers, fillers, dyes, special additives (antimicrobial , photoprotective, antioxidant, etc.), biologically active substances, fragrances. The latter, in turn, are a mixture of various synthetic fragrances.

Today in Russia there is a document providing for a program toxicological studies different ingredients of cosmetics for the purpose of their hygienic regulation in finished perfumery and cosmetic products, taking into account the purpose, form and conditions of use. The results of the assessment of the toxicity of certain ingredients, as well as their effects on the body as a whole, you can find on the website http://www.bestpravo.ru/rossijskoje/hm-instrukcii/t1a.htm.

Of course, it is very good that the Russian consumer is protected! But around the world, studies are underway regarding the safety of certain components of cosmetics. Thus, studies conducted in the United States and Canada have revealed many hormonal disorders in the human body caused by general water pollution. What was the surprise of sanitary doctors when it turned out that the cause of the diseases was the flushing of waste from cosmetic factories into rivers and reservoirs. At the same time, many “experts” argue that the “chemistry” contained in cosmetics is not capable of causing serious disturbances in the body after a single use.

Ecological working group EWG (American non-profit organization Investigating Toxic Chemicals) has been tested for five years cosmetic products. As a result, an electronic database of ingredients was compiled, which included 14,100 branded products. This database is cross-referenced to the database of toxic components.

As a result, it was found that:

    More than a third of all cosmetics contain at least one ingredient that can cause cancer;

    - 57 percent of all products contain a "penetration enhancer" that helps chemicals penetrate the skin and blood vessels faster and deeper;
  • - 79 percent of all cosmetics contain impurities known as carcinogens.

All these impurities are not prohibited by law and can be used in cosmetics without any restrictions. The EWG also found that manufacturers on their labels show only 11 percent of the actual amount of ingredients in cosmetics.

The results of a study conducted by the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) conducted by the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) show that almost every third cosmetic product contains substances whose action is similar to that of hormones. “Pregnant women and young children are primarily at risk,” says BUND expert Cara Häuser. However, these substances are not prohibited. Negative impact manifested in a decrease in fertility, in early puberty; Also, according to some researchers, the development of oncological diseases is possible.

The result was obtained after testing the ingredients of almost 60 thousand products: shower gels, hair care products, creams and makeup products, information about which was collected by users of the codecheck.info portal (Switzerland). Research data is alarming: 30 percent of the foods tested contain substances that act like hormones on the body. Experts, including those from the Ministry of the Environment, have long believed that such substances can cause various widespread diseases.

“Substances that act like hormones on the body are associated, among others, with the occurrence of infertility or reduced fertility, impaired learning and memory, obesity, senile diabetes, diseases of cardio-vascular system, precocious puberty, various oncological diseases(breast, testicular, prostate cancer),” the study notes. In humans, this relationship has not yet received scientific confirmation, but animal studies have proven that substances commonly found in everyday life that act like hormones can lead to the above diseases.

The problem lies not in the presence of small doses of the mentioned substances in the products, but in the interaction of various substances from different products and the environment. For example, male rat pups, whose ancestors were exposed to several hormone-like substances during pregnancy, which are considered safe in themselves, show deformations of the genital organs.

In cosmetics, two groups of substances are considered the most potentially dangerous: preservatives (parabens) and ultraviolet filters. The latter, logically, are found in sunscreens, but are increasingly found in face creams, body lotions, and lipstick. Parabens - esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid - are widely used as preservatives in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and Food Industry due to its antiseptic and fungicidal properties.

TOXICOLOGIST CALLS

Don't jump to conclusions Thomas Platzeck, a toxicologist at the Berlin Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR)) urges against sweeping "discrimination" against certain substances. According to him, the safety of methyl and ethyl parabens has been proven. “These substances are also found in foods,” says Platzeck. However, other products are debatable. "At the level of the European Union, there are discussions about the possibility of reducing the maximum permissible concentrations of propyl and butyl parabens by half," the scientist adds.

Denmark prohibits the use of these preservatives in products for children under three years of age. The mechanism of metabolism in the child's body, as shown by previous studies, is not developed enough to process such ingredients. When BUND experts discovered propyl and butyl parabens in some traditional cosmetic products, the organization demanded a nationwide ban. At the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Denmark stressed that “self-acting nationwide” is ineffective because products are imported. Decision-making at the EU level is needed.

The Kosmetik-Check study is completely unsuitable as a source of information for consumers, the Industrial Association of Personal Care and Detergent Manufacturers (Industrieverband Körperpflegeund Waschmittel) said. Substances are completely legal and come into contact with the body in minimal quantities.

  • LIST OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES, prepared by BUND based on the results of the study, after testing, BUND specialists indicated substances that they consider to be especially dangerous:

  • - methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben, which are primarily used as preservatives;
  • - ethylhexylmethoxycinnamate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, 3-benzylidene camphor, which are found in ultraviolet filters;
  • - bezophenone-1 and -2 (absorbers of ultraviolet rays);
  • - resorcinol (a means for dyeing hair);
  • - cyclotetrasiloxane (conditioner for skin and hair);
  • - hydroxycinnamic acid (hair care product);
  • - dihydroxybiphenyl (hair protection product).

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF?

The consumer can minimize the intake of harmful substances by consciously choosing products. The test showed that biocosmetic products contain few or no hazardous substances. Manufacturers use natural substances as preservatives, for example vegetable oils. When it comes to sun protection products, there are still concerns about chemical filters penetrating the skin. They are found in most conventional preparations. However, mineral ultraviolet filters (eg titanium oxide or zinc oxide) can be used as an alternative. They reflect Sun rays like tiny mirrors. BUND developed free app(App) for iPhone, with which you can check the content of cosmetic products. The App is called ToxFox. For verification, you need to take a picture of the barcode of the product with a smartphone camera. There is also a service on the Internet at: www.bund.net/toxfox. Here you need to enter the product number.

So, it is absolutely clear that the ingredient composition of many cosmetics includes fragrances, preservatives and other harmful components, which often cause allergies and other skin diseases. Swiss independent experts team up to create Stiftung zur Förderung der Hautgesundheit (Foundation in support of healthy skin) in order to inform consumers about the risks and benefits of funds produced by a particular manufacturer (the official website of the fund - www.cosmeticanalysis.com).

The result of impartial testing is the international quality certificate "Ingredients Verified", which has a high authority.

Among the 10 leading brands with an international quality certificate”, - the Swiss anti-aging line Binella of Switzerland, which confirmed highest quality and a wide range of their products.
